conditional studio. >> look at these temperatures. 20s, 27 in woodside this morning, stanford, 35. san jose downtown 31. back up to 33. cupertino, 30. tri valley, danville, 28. same for dublin. closer to the water, walnut cre creek, 40s. santa rosa, 28. you get the picture. it's cold. later on this afternoon we'll see temperatures rise back in the mid to upper 50s. some of us may hit 60. a little bit of a heat wave as you mentioned. we have christmas in the park to start off this weekend. enjoy some of the hot chocolate and festive activities there. it will be very comfortable as you would say, the calendar matches the seasons, the temperatures. >> at long last. anthony, thanks. about 35 homes are still without water this morning after a water main break in the east bay. it happened last night in

lafayette. it sent thousands of gallons of water rushing down a hill. neighbors hustled to stay dry. crews managed to shut off the valve. >> it was scary. >> we will repair the main and backfill it so there's not a ton of water damage. >> freezing temperatures may be to blame for this break. those 35 homes won't have water until noon today. the 16 inch pipe that ruptured was built nearly 70 years ago. meanwhile, shelters in the south bay are opening up one week early in hopes of getting thousands of folks out of the freezing cold. 13 daytime warming centers will be open starting monday at public libraries as well as community and senior centers. this is all across santa clara county. our app is what you need to track the temperatures. it's free for android and iphone users. click on weather for that latest forecast where you are. now, to a developing story,

the deadly rampage in colorado. the gunman who opens fire inside a planned parenthood clinic is in custody. several people were hurt and taken to the hospital yesterday. when the shooting began, police and negotiators swarmed the streets of colorado springs, south of denver. they say he was armed with an ak-47. an officer was killed in the line of duty. the university of colorado officer was among the first on the scene. he and other first responders are being praised for their actions that saved other lives from being lost. >> it was amazing how first responders came together and worked efficiently. >> the standoff lasted five hours after several rounds of gunfire, the shooter surrendered. no word on his motive.

there have been more mass shootings in the u.s. compared with this same time last year. there have been 338, that does include yesterday's shooting in colorado. and exactly one year ago, there had been 336 mass shootings. a flight from san francisco to new york landed safely, despite being hit by a laser. the virgin america flight crew was preparing to land at jfk last night when a green laser beam hit the plane. the aircraft was flying at 6,000 feet, just four miles from the runway. the plane did manage to land safely. we should mention pointing a laser at a plane is a federal crime. it can temporarily blind the pilot. of course, making it dangerous for everyone on board. a bizarre discovery in san francisco has police on alert this morning. 27 baseball bats modified with spikes started popping up across the city on thursday.

they've been found chained to telephone poles. the latest one was found near fisherman's wharf. police officers have collected the bats and are checking them for fingerprints. >> i've been in law enforcement for 20 years and never seen anything like this. it's also san francisco, so nothing really tends to surprise me anymore. but the presence of these bats could be dangerous. >> police tell us the bats are being considered deadly weapons. and there could be felony charges for the person responsible. they're asking anyone who sees it not to touch the bat and call police. san francisco police will be busy keeping shoppers safe this holiday season. people in union square can expect to see a heavy presence throughout the holiday season. dozens of officers joined the crowd last night for the tree lighting ceremony. the police are focused on public

temperatures. the fight continues for people in the bay area who don't want a sexually violent predator living near them. 51-year-old frazier smith was released last week after years in prison. in 2006 he was convicted of sexually assaulting four teen girls. he tried to stay in vallejo but motels refused to rent to him. this week he moved into a motel room in dixon under the name of the person monitoring him. he was evicted after the owners found out his real identity. the mayor is vowing to get smith as far away as possible. >> it's a family oriented community. there is no place for an individual such as himself to be here in dixon. and we will do everything within our legal authority to make sure that he doesn't stay at dixon. >> smith is being monitored around the clock by workers and a gps ankle bracelet. a warning this holiday shopping season about the billion dollar a year

welcome back, it's 7:14 on your saturday morning. look at that, the sun is shining on the golden gate bridge. one car -- well a few more than that. nice morning to get out and enjoy chilly temperatures across the bay area today. one fast food chain is offering valet service to get inside. and customers at one special taco bell in walnut creek are taking advantage of the new service. are you doing here? >> reporter: he's used to parking cars at fancy restaurant. >> they want their meal and get out. >> reporter: during the massive $18 million renovation project, customers can get their car parked, even for tacko bell they're all running for the border? >> i guess so. >> i think it's ironic that they would have to have valet for tacko bell. >> reporter: it's also very for customers visiting other merchants in the center. >> parking is limited. >> reporter: the restaurant's owner says it's kept business steady. >> we haven't noticed any impact on our business to the negative at all. >> reporter: with construction becoming a common sight around the city, parking can be scarts. four other projects are underway, including the orchards project, two new buildings, and the broadway plaza renovation downtown, which also offers free

brentwood still cold and livermore at 30. santa rosa, 28. and petaluma 37. yeah, it's cold wherever you go this morning across the bay area. step out and show you the big picture. it's because of a huge storm system that moved across the middle part of the country. there's the cold front making its way across the tennessee valley. you've got cold arctic air behind it. ahead of it warm, 61 in atlanta, georgia. boston, massachusetts, 50. warmer than it is here across sunny california. hard to believe, right? that's the power of mother nature. let's talk about airport delays. we don't have any huge delays right now. if you're having family coming in from perhaps the tennessee valley down towards the lower mississippi valley, they've got an ice storm headed their way. they may see delays form as we head through the rest of the day. back here at home, later we'll see temperatures warm into the 50s. it will feel like a holiday

season. 55 at the south bay. 57 for san francisco. close to 60 in the north bay. the freeze warning is in place until 9:00 for the darker shades of blue and purple. around the inner bay we have a frost advisory. temperatures not as cold but definitely chilly. let's take you through your microclimate forecast for your saturday. 55 for san jose. 56 for san mateo. san francisco, mid 50s embark daro. across parts of the north bay a few will hit 60. the east bay, 60. hayward, 55 for today and the try valley looking at temperatures in the mid 50s. as we head towards monday there will be another storm system that will move this way. unfortunately for us it doesn't have a lot of moisture. it will weaken and offer the chance of maybe a few sprinkles at the coastline and north bay. wednesday, another system scoots to our north. that's going to bring in a few

many of us shared thanksgiving wishes at the dinner table this week. one east bay man recently went across the country to give his thanks. he thanked people he had never met for something they did long before he was even born. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has this morning's bay area proud. thanksgiving day, 1944 is a big day in this family's history. it's a day richard zimm is thankful for 71 years later. >> you notice over in this corner here -- >> at the infantry museum in fort benning you'll find a collection of world war ii era building. richard came from walnut creek to soak up the history. it's not really buildings he

came to see. it's men. >> these are the people who saved my father's life. >> herb zim was a member of a u division. >> when i would ask him for detail he would say i don't want to talk about it. i can't talk about it. >> in fact, about all richard could get out of his father before his death was that during the battle for the french city of metz he was trapped behind enemy lines for eight days before being rescued on thanksgiving day, 1944. it was all richard knew, until about a year ago when he began searching for more information about the battle. it was the start of a journey that eventually took him to eastern france. and with the help of a local woman, he searched for the very location of the most pivotal moment of his father's life. >> as we were close to saying

we're not going to find it, i looked over and i saw this ruins, concrete ruin off in the distance. i -- tears coming down my face. it was the most spiritual moment of my life. >> still, knowing the place and knowing the story, are not the same. which is why richard has come to georgia for the 66th reunion of the 95th infantry. the iron men of metz. 15,000 served. only 14 are here. >> most of them as we know are gone. whoever is here, i personally want to thank. they saved my father's life. >> and richard made a point to talk with each of them. until one night at dinner. he found just what he was looking for. two who had indeed served with his father. >> we were cut off.

centers. our app is what you need to track the temperatures, it's free, just click on weather on the drop down menu for the latest forecasts. now to a developing story. the deadly rampage in colorado. we're getting our first look at the suspected shooter this morning. authorities just released this mugshot of 57-year-old robert lewis dear of north carolina. he's accused -- suspected of opening fire inside a planned parenthood clinic and killing an officer and two other people. several other people also were hurt and taken to the hospital yesterday. when the shooting began, police and negotiators swarmed the streets of colorado springs, that's south of denver. they say the goodman was armed with an ak-47. the officer was killed in the line of duty, he's a university of colorado at colorado springs police officer. he was among the first on the scene. he and other first responders are being praised for their actions that saved other lives

two. it was visual as hell. i felt this crap coming on my face. i kind of turned when the other one came the other way. i could see him aiming and i was trying to move. it was horrible. >> reporter: he, like all of us, can't comprehend why anyone would do this. >> i'm tired. and i'm angry. you know, i just don't know what possessed somebody to be that bad to other people that he didn't even know. >> reporter: he says everything happened fast. >> i felt stuff hit me. i felt a pain here. a pain here. i ended up in the parking lot bleeding everywhere. i got out of the car, yelled for help. told them to call 911. >> reporter: that's when they said it went into lockdown. >> don't let anybody out, it's horrible. it may come this direction i don't know. she said get in, she was

hollering at people to get in and don't go out to the parking lot. and there was a bunch of people in there after that. everybody was looking at me and freaking out. horrible thing to remember. i don't know what i looked like. but i'm sure it wasn't pleasant. >> reporter: now treated and released, he's more concerned with the other victims. >> that's what's bothering me the most. is what the other people went through. just i can't imagine. >> that was annie snead reporting. he says his friends who were in planned parenthood are kokay. the manhunt continues for europe's most wanted while a service of remembrance was held in paris to honor those killed in the terror attacks. police are searching near brussels for two men suspected of being linked. it's been two weeks since islamic extremists killed 130 people using guns and

explosives. we're learning more about the man who breached security surrounding the white house by jumping over the spiked fence. as nbc white house correspondent kristin wellker tells us eyewitnesses could hardly believe their eyes as it was happening. >> reporter: the secret service is digging deeper as to why a 23-year-old connecticut man jumped over the eight foot high spiked white house fence on thanksgiving day, while the first family celebrated inside. seconds after his jump, the secret service had him in crazy. >> it's crazy for us to think it would happen when we were here. >> reporter: witnesses are recounting the stunning moments. capitol hill intern vunanessa pa was giving her friend a tour. >> he got an american flag and wrapped it around himself. he heard him take a deep breath and say let's do this.

within ten seconds he was over the fence. >> reporter: pena immediately started taking photos. >> i took out my phone to video. and i -- you can tell from the video that i took i was shaking a little bit. just kind of surprising, you know, when all the chaos is happening around the world. >> reporter: he was charged with illegal entry. documents say he told an officer i love my country. this latest incident comes after a series of embarrassing security breaches at the white house, including last september when a man with a knife jumped the fence and made it inside the executive mansion. that prompted the secret service to install new spikes at the top of the fence and a lower bicycle rack. >> they need to put in a fence inside of that one. they need a better defense at the white house given the world's situation. new this morning, another mass celebration with pope

francis, this time in uganda, the second stop on his three nation african tour. the pope is honoring christian martyrs who were killed in the late 1,800's. they chose to be burned alive rather than renounce their faith. he's praising them as role models. two million people attended the mass. it marked the 50th anniversary of the martyrs' canization. a large chunk of metal debris with an american flag has surfaced in england. the debris was found in the sea off the southern tip of england. many are speculating the object belongs to the space x rocket which blew up shortly after launching from cape canaveral, florida, back in june. could the seas have moved that section all the way to great britain. a flight from san francisco

napa. temperatures not as cold, but 28 in santa rosa. as we step out, i want to show you how cold it is. not only for us, but for seattle, they're below freezing. even fargo, 17 degrees, billings, montana, 3. all of that cold canadian air has been pulled in behind a cold front. you can see the contour line ahead of it. 61 in atlanta, georgia. there is the rain ahead of the storm system. behind it you've got a mix of ice and even snow across parts of the rockies. we don't have any airport delays this morning. that's good news if you are doing some traveling, maybe got family coming back in town. maybe you're trying to get back from where you're headed. over towards the eastern seaboard, you'll run into rain. but it doesn't look like it's causing any delays right now. today's forecast, gets temperatures back into the 50s for many of us. i think a few up us my hit 60 this afternoon. many of us will be back into the 50s. the freeze warning we have right

now extends until 9:00 this morning for inland valleys. around the inner bay, that denotes temperatures not as cold, but still chilly back from about 33 to 36 degrees. you're microclimate forecast for your saturday, san jose, 55. san mateo, 56. embarcadero, 56. sausalito, 55. conco concord, 54. the tri valley will be deal ing with temperatures today in the mid 50s. as we move to the next couple of days we have a cold front that will move through on monday. it's not going to provide any rainfall. we may get a few sprinkles at the coastline and maybe even sprinkles across parts of the north bay. that's about it. tuesday, recharged, warm up a little bit. another storm system passes by wednesday. this could give another chance of rain for the north bay. for everybody. thursday is the day i think we'll see showers across the entire bay area. and even some sierra snow expected as well. maybe .25 at the valley floor

peninsula this morning. there's an accident with minor injuries on 280 northbound at the bunker hill offramp in redroot city. the chp tells us ice on the bridge could be to blame. caltrans is on the way to put sand down on the bridge. last word is 280 is closed northbound in that area in redwood city. it should reopen as soon as they can put sand on the bridge to improve traction. this accident was reported just before 6:00 a.m. all right. what do you do if you're lost near a highway? apparently you should take a nap on the shoulder. that's what a pick in sonoma did. someone called police yesterday morning after spotting this pig in santa rosa on highway 12. when officers arrived the hog was snoozing in the sun along the highway. they woke him up, snapped this photo hoping someone will recognize him and call sonoma county animal services to be reunited. we hope -- >> that's the pig my neighbor has you can tell by the mole.
