good morning. this is a special kigs of "early toda today". -- edition. late breaking developments in the investigation and details about the victims involved in wednesday's shooting. authorities have released the names, including the father of six and a cousin of a new york giants player. more in a moment. president obama took timeout last night to commemorate those killed and the loved ones. saying their loss is american's loss. thousands attended a candle light vigil. many of whom knew victims and

victims families. also a prayer vigil urging the families not to link islam or the islamic community with these attacks. and we are learning more about the shooters. farook appears to have been radicalized and had been in contact with people with extremist views. and the four guns were purchased legally. although attempts were made to alter the weapons. jay, now that we're 24 hours after, they have really had the opportunity to take forensic evidence from the crime scene and really churn it through. >> and there are links with this couple and different people who have been on the federal watch list for quite some time. they have been able to recover two cell phones. a hard drive from one of the computers. slightly damaged, they believe. because they wanted to kind of hide that digital footprint if

you will. which leads authorities to believe maybe there was some instruction given to them before this attack. >> so the question is might have there been more attacks being planned? and motive. >> mote sieve the difficult one. but it is going to take some time. you have to think about with the amount of am moe. and we're talking about thousands of rounds of ammunition. with the explosives that maybe there was more in the plans for this couple. that is something authorities are looking into as well. again they are warning everyone, don't expect a decision real quick here. we've got a lot to work through here. we've got to make connections both here at home and overseas. so it is going to take some time. >> has there been a key piece of information that's come up about the suspects here? >> i think what is still baffling and a key to this investigation is that they really appear to lead double lives. so often it is a leak from a flend or something that that

and answers. >> san bernardino police lieutenant mike madden was the first officer on the scene. a 24 year vet whoern normally has a desk job. and he was on his way to lunch when the call went out. and last night he spoke about the horrific scene he encount encountered. >> it was something although we train for it, it is something you are never actually prepared for. my goal was to assemble an entry team and enter into the building to engage the active shooter. this mind set and this type of training became indrinted in us after the columbine incident and that was the goal. as we made i our way around to the east side it was immediately evident that the reports we were getting were 100% true. there were victims who were clearly obviously deceased outside of the conference room. and i relayed that information

totally other responding everies. and again requested assistance. it was unspeakable the carnage we were seeing. and the pure panic on the face of those individuals that were still in need and needing to be safe. and when we entered there was fresh gun powder. and the smell of gun powder in the air leading me to believe that there was in fact -- there were in fact shooters still. it was extremely loud. the firearms were going off. there were -- there were people who were obviously injured and obviously in great amounts of pain. and that was evident. in the moans and the whales that we were hearing in the room. it was very loud in the room. and we also had fire sprinklers going off inside the room. so that was adding for chaos. i noticed upon entry that there is a christmas tree in there.

all of the tables were detecorad for a christmas party. and it just seems so senseless. here are people going into their holiday festivities and now we were dealing with death. there were many officer whose did extraordinary jobs yesterday for our department and also for all of the agencies who responded so quickly. it was just -- it was truly overwhelming to see all of the agencies that got here and got here in a hurry to provide us assistance. nobody hesitated. people knew what their job was. and their job was to try to bring some calm to chaos. >> investigators are also digging into the syed farook's past. there are growing indications that farook appears to have been radicalized. communicating with jihad sympathizers here and at home and overseas. pete williams has details.

>> investigators are analyzing a trove of evidence found in the house. including cell phones and computers. officials say they found indications he was communicating by phone and social media with people in the u.s. and overseas during the past year who showed an interest in radical jihad. another important discovery, an explosive device left behind at the shooting scene. three pipe bombs tied together with a remote controlled detonator. inside the suv was the remote control itself. that same design was used by the tsarnaev brothers to set off the boston marathon bombing. investigators are now looking at whether that same design was available somewhere else from a non terrorist source. u.s. officials are also looking at farook's overseas travel. twice to saudi arabia where he said he met his wife and to

pakistan where she comes from. on the other hand were victims farook knew and worked with investigators also say the attacks were planned well in advance. police and federal agents found a dozen pipe bombs and 4500 rounds of ammunition. the and suv getaway was a rental picked up by farook three or four days ago. >> this took days, weeks, if not months to plan out. there is nothing impulsive about this shooting at all. >> with all that fire power did they have other attacks in mind? >> we don't know at this point the extent of their plans. we do not know their motivations. >> that was nbc east pete williams reporting for us. >> now for the reaction from washington. i'll send it over to alex witt at nbc world headquarters in new york. >> thank you for that. political reaction to the

shooting in california was certainly a big part of a busy thursday. senate republicans overwhelmingly rejected new gun control legislation. twice yesterday democrats tried to attach new provisions on to a budget bill, including the ability to bar suspected terrorists from buying guns. the bill itself was a major one, gutting obamacare and defunding planned parenthood for a year it. now heads back to the house where it is expected to clear. the white house is already said president obama will veto that bill. the other big move by the senate. they passed a $305 billion five year transportation infrastructure bill. it is the largest of its kind in a decade. and not a moment too soon. current funding in the federal highway trust fund expires today. but there is a big omission. the act which provides medical coverage for 9/11 first responders is reportedly not included. we take you to incredible

welcome back. i'm richard lui in san bernardino, california. patrick berkari is one of the lucky survivors. he remembers seeing syed farook at the christmas party he was attending with coworkers. and a trip to the bathroom may have saved his life, the horror unfolding. >> somebody asked where is syed. i didn't realize he wasn't there. i left to use the restroom. we just secured the restroom so nobody could enter. >> how? >> i laid on the floor and i put my feet against the door. and i had the other gentlemen beside me do the same.

>> did the gunman come into the restroom. >> he wasn't going to be able to get in. i guess if he did it would be over our dead bodies. when the s.w.a.t. team came in, i told them i was a medic and one of my good friends there was shot, i tried to render her aid. she got shot multiple times and we so you would see the bullets lodged urn her skin on her wrist and that wasn't where the entries were. >> where do you go from here? >> just take each day as best as can be. >> yesterday, where the shooter syed farook was a member. i asked them about farook's time at the center. >> with he would come through this door and then walk this way. >> this way. okay. and he stands here. >> this was his spot. >> and then he start doing the service. the optional service that may be
