as this story develops rapidly both here at home and abroad. from the nation's capital to san bernardino to pakistan and london. we are covering this story and new terror attacks overnight from all over the world this morning. let's begin with nbc's ron allen at the white house. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we expect the president to try to reassure the nation that keeping the country safe is his highest priority and we're expecting him to explain exactly what happened in san bernardino and to prevent it from happening again. president obama meeting in the white house situation room on saturday with top advisers to discuss the san bernardino attack. the president in his weekly address all, but saying the massacre was terrorism. >> it is entirely possible that these two were radicalized to commit the act of terror. it was possibly to say a workplace shooting and calling for stricter gun laws and last month telling the nation

>> right now, we know of no specific and credible intelligence indicating a plot on the homeland. >> today, according to the white house, the president will update the country with the latest on the investigation and argue that isis, quote, will be destroyed. republicans warning the commander in chief is not up to the challenge of defeating the so-called islamic state. ben carson slipping in the polls says he'll stop immigration programs. like the one malik used. >> that vetting resulted in missing someone who could carry out such a horrendous crime. that should be the end of the argument right there. >> while other contenders vow to take the fight directly to isis. >> we won't cower in the face of evil. >> his military strategy is straightforward. >> we need to do saturation

carpet bombing directed at isis. >> we expect the president to say that his strategy will be successful in time. but mostly, we expect the president to talk abandoned what happened in san bernardino and the threat america now faces. now to california where the fbi raided a house belonging to suspect syed farook's childhood friend. miguel almaguer is covering that part of the story in san bernardino. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. with so many indicators pointing to this as a clear act of terror, many are wondering, were warning signs missed. this weekend an overnight raid. the fbi storming the home of syed farook's childhood friend. agents ripping open a garage door, but able saturday to

interview the man that bought and sold these rifles to the gunman more than three years ago. it is another lead into what may have been the deadliest terror attack in the u.s. since 9/11. >> this is a very complex investigation. >> reporter: investigators are still poring through taf sheen malik and syed farook's lives. just before the massacre, she pledged allegiance to isis. >> women are no longer wall flowers. they're not only playing a key role in support, they're playing a key role in limited instances in operations. >> reporter: together, malik and farook amassed an arsenal. they had more ammunition than

some gun stores stock. they unleashed round after round from high powered rifles. >> you've gotten rounds at a time. you load it up, shoot it. you can go through ten rounds in a matter of seconds. >> reporter: witnesses say the shootout with police that left farook and malik dead was over in seconds. >> the bullets echoed through your body. you felt the bullets shake your body. pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: but the bloodshed they left behind inside this office complex will be felt for a lifetime. so many questions remain. those who knew farook say he never appear radicalized but they say they know very lgt about his wife. many questions remain about tashfeen malik. a family member tells the los angeles times malik began

posting extremist messages on facebook after arriving in the united states. nbc news also obtained a photo of her pakistan id card. bill kneelly is in pakistan's capital city isla ma bad and joins us now. >> reporter: good morning. tashfeen malik is as much a mystery here as she is in the united states. she wasn't on a single government watchlist, she'd done nothing wrong either here or in saudi arabia where she grew up. one of her friends said that when he was at university, she destroyed most of her photographs that showed her without a vail. that friend also said that she changed at university. she became deeply comfort,

deeply religious changing her dress and her habits. but, you know, that doesn't explain how she went from pharmacy student to terrorist. she was in her deeply conservative way like millions of pakistani women. nothing explains how she went from a soft spoken suburban mom to a black clad terrorist who opened fire on police and murdered people. was she cradicalized here? we don't know. she pledged allegiance to the isis leader baghdadi. her background can explain who she was but not why she did what she did. she was from here, but as a terrorist, she really came from absolutely nowhere. harry, back to you.

>> thanks. evan coleman is an nbc terrorism analyst. good morning. >> good morning. >> appreciate you coming in again this morning. yesterday, an isis radio station claimed some credit for the attack of these two calling them soldiers of the caliphate. you see this as an isis or isil operation, but does that even matter? >> we've seen a marketedly different reaction than after the paris attacks or the downing russian airliner. it's one of their media units, but they didn't claim credit. if we had called these people something else, they would have said jehovah's witnesses did it. they're getting information from our reports and rebroadcasting it. they have issued no claim of responsibility, they have not

said thrained these people. the fact that they built explosive devices that didn't work, they went after a target that makes almost no sense. none of this fits the isis model. and the question is, were these people inspired by isis, inspired by another group, was it simply radical jihad? we don't really know. there's a lot about these folks we don't know. this does stand in contrast to home grown attacks we've seen previously. >> so many fingers are pointing to her as this possible black widow. does that have any credence with you? >> it's certainly possible. another thing is we don't really know even if she was the one that was radicalized, we don't know when that took place. according to relatives, she began posting extremist posts on facebook, we don't know why.

there's a report that she pledged allegiance to al baghdadi. if she wanted to be known as an isis member, why would she post it under an account without her own name. these are questions we have to answer before we start labeling this isis. >> how do you combat something like this? sleeper cells, lone wolves, whatever you want to call it. >> the white house has put so much emphasis on the countering extremism campaign. we have to go back to the drawing board here and think about what we're doing to dissuade people from doing this. not just here in the u.s., but broader across the world. let's turn to chuck todd. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's set the stage for tonight's prime time address in

the oval office. why does the president feel like he needs to do this right now in this way? >> i think that san bernardino coming so soon after paris has the country is jittery. you see it, the issue of security and terrorism has risen on the list of issues most important to americans right now. and frankly there has been a vacuum of sorts, the president has been hesitant about being too outspoken on this issue. i think they realize they need to reassure the public. if they're not out there talking about, don't target good muslim measures and things like this. if the president's not the one out there saying it, someone else is going to fill the vacuum. they now realize the president needs to sort of use the pulpit here to calm the public down. >> beyond that, do they have a

specific strategy to deal with these lone wolves? >> you know, they don't yet. that's a line of questioning i'm going to have later this morning with the attorney general. she's on the show. that's one of the questions. they don't seem to. you saw the head of the homeland security department basically said we need a whole new strategy. they haven't been able to crack this code. you heard evan say this fight to try to fight the ideology on educational grounds has the worked, what more can be done, what more can change. do they need to start monitoring more people? does the fbi have the resources for that? there's this matter of the u.s. constitution. what point do you go too far in violating the rights of american citizens. >> finally, i want to talk to you about tone in this country. we've heard what the candidates have had to say on the campaign trail. but they're not alone. we heard the president of

liberty university urging people on campus to arm themselves. take a listen. >> i've always thought if more good people had conceal carry permits, we could end those muslims before they walk in and kill us. >> he did say he was referring to the san bernardino killers when he was referencing the muslims. is this the rhetoric the president has been really trying to avoid? >> he has and don't forget the president before him has. if the rhetoric becomes sort of us versus muslims, that that's what isil wants to put out there. that's what isis wants to do. they want to be able to say, see, that's what's happening there. that is why the president has to come out and talk to the american public right now. because there is a lot of fear and anxiety. guess what. people are concerned about their security. they're thinking about taking their security procedures into

assailant armed with a knife arrested by two police officers. video of the dramatic moment captured on social media. witnesses heard shouts of "this is for syria" as commuters were attacked. >> i hear him say "this is for syria". >> reporter: there was panic. more jihadist aggression. >> it was really scary. >> reporter: one man suffered serious knife wounds while one other received minor injuries. britain has been on a high state of alert meaning a terrorist attack is highly likely. this morning, downing street says it is monitoring the investigation as police try to establish the true motivation for this terrifying attack. the most severely injured victim is not in a life-threatening condition.

panic and fear can be spread with the current anxious atmosphere across europe. >> thank you. just weeks after the terror attack in paris, the band eagles of death metal with play in that city for the first time since the massacre. now the group is taking the stage with u2, that vowed nothing would stop it from reschedu rescheduling. eagles of death metal has already said it wants to be the first band to play at the bataclan. a deadly shooting was caught on camera in miami. we warn you, it is graphic video. police surrounded a suspect after an attempted bank robbery. the fatal shots were fired. a scare in the air for actor morgan freeman. the 78-year-old actor's plane

had to make a crash landing in mi mississippi. and here at home, major news out of hollywood. the big moment coming a little bit early for kim kardashian and kanye west. the super star couple announced the birth of a baby boy in posts on twitter and facebook. even though he was three weeks early, one of kim's selfie showed just how eager she was for this big birthday to arrive. another little boy is getting excited about the christmas holiday to come. britain's prince william describes an extremely bouncy prince george. love that video. the prince's comments were to a young journalist he met four years ago when she was homeless. prince william promised to give her a big interview if she achieved her dream. incredible. finally, election day for playoffs when top teams will be

paired off for semi-finals and bold games. action on the field can still be wild even as the season winds down, that's for sure. the baylor bears and the texas longhorns got into a bench-clearing brawl in their match. texas won 23-17. so emotions roughening high. >> goodness. instenoses. >> indeed. >> feeling bad for my friends in iowa. >> they lost. how about a look at the weather? >> yes. we are focused on el nino this year. we have this stormy pattern coming in off the pacific. especially in the pacific northwest, washington, oregon and northern california, that's where we're seeing most of our nasty weather. every day or two we're seeing another storm making its way onshore. we are looking at really heavy rain, also mountain snow, very gusty winds and rough surf. we could see gusts from 60 to 70

miles per hour. that could lead to coastal flooding. we're also looking at the potential of flash flooding when you factor in the idea of 5 to 9 inches of rain. the snow is going to be in the highest elevations. this cold front will produce a little bit of light rain through iowa today and lots of clouds hey, we've got some rain this morning. anthony slaughter here tracking showers across parts of the north bay. that's where it will stay today. but the storm door does stay open over the next couple of days. we're talking about another chance of rain not only for wednesday and thursday but next weekend as well. great news as we get into this rain season. you'll notice as we step outside this morning, cloudy skies in place. a little light shower activity across the north bay. and san francisco and points north, that's where you'll see the rain today. otherwise mostly cloudy skies expected with temperatures right near 60 for today. and that's your latest

from the peninsula, san francisco and points north. that's where you could see a passing brief shower. most likely in the morning. then this afternoon we all clear out. mostly cloudy even this afternoon. the storm door does stay open over the next couple of days. not only a chance of rain for wednesday and thursday but next weekend. we'll talk more about that at 7:00. >> anthony, thanks. this morning the search is on for the person who opened fire on a busy east bay freeway. the shooting happened in concord just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon near the grant avenue exit. traffic came to a standstill, lanes of the freeway shut down for hours. our nbc bay area chopper caught video of the backup. it stretched for miles. police say they started getting 911 calls that a driver in a silver suv was firing shots into a gold-colored suv shortly afterwards, a man -- a wounded man showed up at the hospital. he underwent surgery, and he is expected to survive. >> we can't say that there was multiple shots fired. he had at least at minimum two

upper body gunshot wounds, and there was also bullet holes that were found on the side of his vehicle. >> southbound lanes were closed for about two hours. police are not sure if it was a road rage incident or if the shooter knew the victim. and we now know the name of the oakland teen killed in a tree-climbing accident. jack lewis was a 16-year-old student at oakland technical high school. he was crushed and killed by a large tree branch friday night. it happened just outside of fairyland. police say he was climbing on that branch when it snapped. yesterday his friends and family went to pay their respects. >> he was a really light-hearted guy, outgoing. he was down for anything. like i don't know, he was, like, the home boy. like you could talk to him about anything. >> oakland mayor says the tragic loss is heartbreaking for the city. well, coming up at 7:00 on

>> they're unregulated products. any time you're moving your body at a speed 5 miles per hour, 10 miles per hour, you're introducing potential for injury. >> reporter: the consumer product safety commission says it has reports of more than 20 falls, serious enough to require a trip to the emergency room. and it's investigating at least five reports of hover board fires like this case in gulf shores, alabama, caught on video by timothy cade. >> my only safety concerns at the time was me hurting myself, like falling off. i never thought they would explode or anything like that. >> reporter: a hover board fire caused major damage to a family home. no one was hurt. in harris county, texas, another fire caught on video. in louisiana, jessica's son got a hover board for his 12th

talented they are. >> he probably is the face of rodeo these days because he is a winner. >> i think trevor is an icon for the sport of rodeo. >> opening night of the national finals arrives, trevor prepares backstage. >> it's a really delicate situation right before i go in the arena because i have to bring myself up to be able to compete at that level so when i'm back there and i'm amped up. i've got to be able to be hitting on all eight cylinders. >> despite his all-around work in rodeo, trevor is known for his success in the tie down event. >> it's just me, my horse and a calf. when i get there i can block the calf off, flanking and putting the string on his front foot and tie him up and all of that needs to happen in seven or eight seconds. >> how about 6.8 seconds, to be exact. a new record. the fastest round-one time in finalist history? he's the champ.
