"early today" starts now. president obama addressed the nation last night in his third prime time address. speaking from the oval office, the president said that although the threat of terror is real, we should rely on our american values to overcome it. >> the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. we will destroy isil and any other organization that tries to harm us. our success won't depend on tough talk or abandoning our values or giving into fear. that's what groups like isil are hoping for. instead, we will prevail by being strong and smart. resilient and relentless, and by drawing upon every aspect of american power. >> the president didn't offer new strategies but talked about what is being done to combat the

ongoing isis threat. >> we're working with friends and allies to stop isil's operations. to disrupt plots, cut off their financing and prevent them from recruiting more fighters. since the attacks in paris, we've surged intelligence sharing with our european il allies. we're working with turkey to see off the border. we're countering the ideology that isil conveys online. tracey potts joins us. >> nothing new in this speech, but the president did try to reassure americans after what happened in california last week, which he clearly labeled an act of terror. >> the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. >> reporter: president obama admits the isis threat isstrate arming iraqis and syrian rebels, special ops forces, cutting off

from capitol hill. paul ryan called the speech disappointing and halfhearted. new york mayor de blasio is backing what the president says, what he wants to do, especially when it comes to congress dealing with gun control. >> tracie potts, thank you for that. the reaction to the president's address has been swift. president republican front runner criticize d the address, writing on twitter, is that all? paul ryan tweeted, the address was disappointing. on the democratic side, bernie sanders issued a statement saying, the president is right and we should not undermine our constitutional rights as we fight to destroy isis. part of president obama's address last night was to try to calm the fears of americans in the wake of the paris attacks and last week's san bernardino shooting.

nbc's chris jansing has more. >> this was a president who wanted to calm the fears of the american people, acknowledging the fears in the wake of what happened in paris and, of course, here in san bernardino. he started by talking about the 14 lives that were lost here in a very personal way, but also moved on to what the administration is doing to counter the threat posed by isis. even as it's not clear what role isis may have played in inspiring these attacks. he talked about more air strikes in syria and iraq, increased cooperation and things like intelligence sharing with our partners. he promised the americans would be strong, smart, resilient and relentless. hunt down everywhere. disrupt plots where were they're found. a lot in reaction to what has been a set of unrelenting set of attacks by republicans, especially on the 2016 campaign trail. he chose a setting that showed the moment.

in the oval office, his third time giving a speech there. two people were killed in a plane crash in san bernardino on sunday. this shows the plane on fire. the plane was taxiing down the runway was flames came out of the engine. it then caught fire and exploded. firefighters extinguished the pla plane. it's being investigated. lor rheetta lynch is expecto announce that there will be an investigation into the chicago police department. this is after the illinois attorney general called for a civil rights investigation following release of the video of the shooting death of laquan mcdonald. some called it a coverup. officer jason van dyke has been charged with first degree
