"today in the bay" starts right now. good thursday morning, thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. powerful mix of rain and we're monitoring the dop doppler radar. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge on your right. expect slippery conditions for that morning commute. we do have team coverage on what is to come from road conditions to how long this will last. first, let's go to

meteorologist kari hall for a timeline of the powerful storm. this morning's rain, really just the beginning. >> this will be all that people will be talking about today. the heavy downpours off and on and will be some breaks and we'll see this move in especially for the south bay and parts of the peninsula and the east bay for the first time and this will continue as we go into the afternoon, as well as tomorrow and another break before the next round of rain moves in. as we take a look at the radar now, we're seeing some dark greens in there indicating some moderate rain. today we're only looking at highs in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees and some thunderstorms in the mix, too. so, i'll give you a better idea of the timing and what else to expect as all of this passes the bay area. that's coming up in just a few minutes, but let's check in now with mike to see how it's impacting the roads. >> we have, obviously, the wet roadways slippery conditions and increase that stopping distance so leave more space between you

and the car in front of you. toll plaza heading westbound, you see the light traffic and also the water on the lens. here on the map, actively going on above the roadways and leaving what we have on our road weather index. green roadways, not just wet, but damp. san mateo bridge and the south bay now getting that rain and we'll track and scattered incidents reported around the bay and nothing major except for the north bay. we just heard about a tree down. we'll check on those details. the green on the radaron the north day right now. live look at san rafael where flooding concerns are mounting as this storm could pack quite a punch. >> you've got your umbrella out. >> i do have my umprella out and i'm holding it this way laura and sam because the wind is part of this weather conversation this morning. anyone sitting outside. the concern, of course, is for those who are driving.

there's no traffic right now. this is 101 northbound near lucky drive. there is a flooded sign there, if there is a vehicle that passes, you'll see just how there's concern. there's a large pool of water there and you can tell who's going too fast because the brake lights come on and a huge wall of water. actually, here comes a car, but this is, of course, what people are worried about. cars that don't slow down maybe and there you see just how much water actually drives up and splashes up and can really obstruct your view when you're driving. so, again, this is 101 northbound near lucky drive. earlier this morning we saw plenty of pools of water in shopping centers, as well as on highways or on roads. wind, again, a part of this conversation this morning. and, also, another problem area here in marin was down by mill valley near paradise where there was a problem area reported last night. there is still a pool of water

there. still, again, you need to heed the warnings. you saw just a minute ago a great wall of water that splashed up here. this is what chp is warning against. december 2014 had declared a state of emergency. we have some of the lessons learned from that time and the problems that may arise, again, this year. that's coming up enthe next half hour. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stay on top of our storm with this nbc bay area map. it's free for iphones and android devices. happening today, the man accused of committing newark's first homicide of the year expected to be in court this afternoon. kim faces a murder charge for allegedly strangling and killing his wife. police arrested kim yesterday after they found his wife dead in their home on monday. officers say that kim was there when they arrived that scene. they also say there was blood

and broken items scattered everywhere indicating a sign of a struggle. a bay area women may be looking at hate crime charges. >> this lady was talking about my god. she was saying he is this -- >> do not touch me! >> the confrontation is going viral. it shows a state employee named denise harassing a muslim man at the regional park last sunday when a park officer arrived she continued her verbal assault. >> your mind has been taken over. brain washed and you have nothing but hate. >> he hit him with an umbrella and threw coffee on him. >> people who think her way the isis of americans. like it's a tiny minority group. they don't represent america. >> alameda county prosecutors are now trying to decide what,

if any, charges will be a filed including misdemeanor battery. 4:36 right now. back to our top story. >> we're tracking that powerful weather system making its way through the bay area this morning. if you are headed out the door, make sure to leave early. let's get to meteorologist kari hall. >> you can see the rainfall totals so far and this will really bring in quite a bit of rain and we're still tracking lots of it. and there's more where that came from. look at parts of northern california up around eureka and reading and some heavy downpours there and that will be working its way to the south as we go into the morning. now, of course, the north bay where we expect the storm to hit the hardest as we go through the day has been dealing with quite a bit of rain and till continue to see some more of those scattered showers throughout the day. so, we pretty much have good coverage of rain as we start out the morning. but some breaks.

heading into the mid-morning hours, we'll see this kind of tapering off and then some more showers and storms heading intatonight. so, once we see the break and the sun coming out, don't expect it to be completely done. i'll give you a better idea of the timing and what to expect not only for this evening, but heading into tomorrow and another round this weekend. that's all coming up in the full microclimate forecast. let's check in now with mike to see if we have any problems yet. >> we do, kari. wait, there's more coming. keep that in mind. over here. palo alto. this is right by university on highway 101. the map will show you the entire region showing the green highlighting from palo alto north to fremont north over on the east bay. wet roadways we just saw and getting damp throughout the south bay, as well. everybody will have a split commute this morning. the north bay eastbound 80 across the carquinez bridge and some slowing headed towards vallejo.

a funeral will be held for evet. she was a county environmental health specialist. she was just 1 of the 14 people killed during that holiday gathering. as the community tries to move forward, federal agents are making major strides with their investigation. >> a man now under scrutiny. a former neighbor and friend of farook. martinez and farook planned to carry out an attack three years ago. marquez is being questioned after they questioned two of the rifles in the attack belonged to him. him and his wife may have been radicalized before they met. >> as early as the end of 2013 they were talking about jihad and ma and martyrdom. >> the couple also left behind evidence they were contemplating other targets in southern california. coming up next, before you get behind a wheel of a car, do

and it looks like we will have several waves of this as we go into the next 48 hours. so, as we take a live look now at the bay bridge, you can see that that camera is shaking around. i just saw a wind report of 36 miles per hour at the golden gate bridge. so, most likely at the bay bridge it's about the same. the rainfall so far is two inches of rain and st. helena and in guerneville and the possibility of a tree falling and knocking out some power lines. so, we may see some more damage like that, especially in the north bay. and then as ugo faryou go furth the south, and this is the storm just getting started. we are seeing the larger scale of this system as it continues to move across the pacific northwest. as it moves into the bay area, we will, once again, see several rounds of this rain moving

through kind of like folks in a pin wheel rolling across the region as we see this system continuing to slowly move off to the east. now, there will be some breaks, though, even some sunshine. allowing our temperatures to warm up today. here we are at 10:00, 11:00, by 5:00 we still have a break and then the next round of rain starts to move in to the north bay with some heavy downpours and the possibility of stronger storms in the mix that will continue into tonight, as well as early tomorrow. a lot of snow still continuing in the sierra as we go through early tomorrow morning. the futurecast, as far as how much rain we could see here, the possibility of over an inch of additional rain and then as we go into tonight, as well as tomorrow, another inch for the south bay. in the sierra, we're looking at one to two feet of snow at crest level and some of those ridge gusts may top 125 miles an hour. and look at what the computer models are throwing down for that snow.

up to 32 inches of snow at kirkwood. yes, we do need it, but it ais going to be treacherous trying to get through those areas. we'll talk more about that and into the weekend in a few minutes. how is it looking out there now, mike. >> very wet roadways. north bay, san rafael and the glowing conditions and mist kicking up on the roadway. take it easy there because stopping may be a factor for many vehicles out there at highway speeds. as we look at the map and we'll show you what kari is dealing with. this is the radar and all this activity going on around the north bay and we're looking at green patches here, some puddling, ponding and fog and we also have the green all over the roadways where you'll find that. the highlighting is where you'll find the slicker conditions and the tree down and that's at first street where that tree is down and get some wires. we'll track that and the rain

safety pick plus for having superior front crash prevention systems along with automatic braking. fremont police have a big problem on their hands. they are saying that scammers are actually calling people at their house trying to collect federal taxes. scammers have called residents most recently in that area claiming to be some kind of agent working for the internal revenue service. but fremont police are putting out the warning to people to watch out for scammers asking for any personal information. >> yes, and to call the irs that the irs number. we'll have that up for you on our website if you have any questions at are. right now at 4:50. a new mexico family says they have had enough. this after repeated bullying forced a high school girl to be pulled from class this week. her name is isis. isis logan is a junior in albuquerque, new mexico. she has been theering tat of bullying and that also included

take a break and then the sun coming out. highs today low 60s and upper 50s for san francisco. and 60 degrees in santa rosa. 62 in concord and pleasanton looking at 60 degrees today. once again, a lot of rain pouring at times but then the next round moves in later on tonight by 7:00 or 8:00 and that could be a little bit stronger dumping some additional rain. we take a break for a while and then another round of rain moving in saturday night into early sunday. let's check in now with mike to see how it's impacting the morning commute. >> kari, so far just a warning for most folks around the bay. as we look at fremont. the lights moving into this area as kari said marching down towards san jose and the flag flapping as the wind is pushing it down, as well. we'll look at the map and you see the effects of the rain highlighted in green. wet roadways damp in many parts and much of south san jose not getting hit. the bay bridge toll plaza, of course, slick conditions and

minor backup traditional at this time. a warng in the south bay after a close encounter with a mountain lion. park officials say a mountain lion went after a 50-pound leash dog quick silver county park. the dog and the owner got away safely. rangers have now posted signs around the area informing trail users of the incident urging them to be cautious. >> when there's a lot of people out, i think that i feel pretty safe. >> talk really loud. so, just trying to stay safe and keep a home for the mountain lions, too. >> officials say it's safest to use the trails after sunrise and before sunset. if you encounter a mountain lion make yourself look as large as you can and make a lot of noise. $600,000 facelift for downtown san jose. is it an upgrade or distraction? you be the judge. as part of the illuminating downtown project two underpasses
