on the roadways. our satellite radar shows the brunt of the storm is still north of the bay area. "today in the bay" team is here to help you get where you need to go and, of course, safely this morning. let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. picked up quite a bit in just the last couple of hours. >> especially for the north bay. that's where we expected the highest impact from this system. it's just now starting to move into the south bay. so, the impact is not as great. but that will slow things down. many people head out the door to go to work or school this morning. and we are picking up on this rain that looks pretty moderate and there may be some bouts of heavy downpours just briefly along with those gusty winds. we had some of the higher wind gusts over 40 miles per hour. right now, temperatures are in the low 50s for the north bay and low 60s for the peninsula and highs today will be right around 60 degrees with times of rain and even some sunshine breaking out for most of the
6:01 am
afternoon. i'll detail what to expect with this round of rain and as the next round of storms move in, that's coming up in a few minutes but now let's check in with mike. looks pretty crowded there at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> it is, kari, because the metering lights are on. a lighter volthat might help with the morning because the conditions are prit bad. camera shakes because of the wind and also the wet roadways just past oakland north and southbound with these headlights with the volume building. as we look at the maps, noer issues. new crash coming in out of lafayette and a car went off the roadway into the bushes and with these conditions and the green all over, that means wet, slick roads. many reports like that. fortunately, no major injuries reported and a slight build for the tri-valley and hayward and union city, a crash reported 680 right around the 84 interchange and, that one is off the roadway, as well. just warning folks to lower those speeds. if you travel through the south bay, the silicon valley moves well and through palo alto lower
6:02 am
the speeds because it is safer in the morning commute and wet conditions meaning tougher to stop. lower the speeds and increase thence between you and the car in front of you so you have more chance to react. >> thank you, mike. let's bring in "today in the bay" stephanie chuang. steph, seeing strong winds where you are and concerns about flooding. >> absolutely, sam. now, i can tell you right now about a sfedy drizzle here in southern marin and we heard kari saying some places see 40-mile-per-hour winds and near lucky drive where there are signs of flooding and warning signs. you can see cars going through now. they're experiencing brake lights and kind of tapping their brakes because it's pretty wet. the warning is to slow down, of course. the north bay getting hit first. pools of water and it's a popular roadway, of course. that's when you can run into problems and a large puddle

6:05 am
is watch your tailgating. watch the distance between you and the driver in front of you. when you, of course, have the wet, much harder to slow down. i realize common sense, but i think it's worth mentioning because as the morning commute goes on, the chp is expected to get busier in terms of having to deal with accidents with people who perhaps weren't driving as safely as they should be. reporting live, bob redell "today in the bay." >> especially as people rush out the door. you're right. we'll track this storm throughout thescast and kari hall another update with a look at this radar right here in two minutes. for your microclimate forecast at your fingertips, download our nbc bay area amp and click on the weather tab. new this morning, dogs rescued. two of them from a house fire in vula. you can see the dogs actually being resuscitated there. that fire broke out last night on a street called raw hide court. the flames go up behind you there. crews were able to keep them contained to the attic and back bedroom of the house. no one was injured and no word
