now to a developing story. four people are confirmed dead after a medical helicopter crashed in the central valley. "today in the bay" bob redell following the latest from our newsroom. bob, we see the medical helicopters going to dangerous scenes, but this was not one of those transports. >> it wasn't. but it was foggy at the time. this medical helicopter, kris, was transporting a critically ill patient from a hospital in fresno to a hospital in bakersfield. normally a ten-minute trip. but it crashed around 7:00 last night in dense fog into a field of orchards near the town of mcfarland. you're looking at a file image of that exact arircraft. not clear what role, if any, that might have played in this crash. all four people onboard were killed. the pilot, a nurse, a paramedic and a patient. rescuers began searching for a missing chopper after there was no contact for about 30 minutes. relying on the last-known gps signal it took searchers another
6:35 am
90 minutes to find the crash site because of bad weather. >> we ran into fog and heavy rain trying to get in by foot. and it took us quite some time to get there. >> the ntsb is investigating the cause of the crash. incidentally, the company that runs the medical chopper service was holding its annual christmas party when employees received this news. sam? >> heartbreaking for them, no question about that. thank you, bob. 6:35 right now. when it comes to support or perhaps disgust depending upon your rur spective, for donald trump's latest idea to ban lms depends on who you ask. that according to a new nbc "wall street journal" poll. his proposed ban is wrong. but it's a different story if you go through the party's responses. here's the republicans. 42% of the people polled support trump's proposed ban. like trump's style according to
6:36 am
that poll. not including some of his competitors in the race for president. >> the front running candidate for president he's not a serious man. i believe the republican nominee is going to be someone that can win the general election and i don't believe donald can. >> the new numbers show trump still has more than double the support among gop voters compare would his closest rival, which right now is texas senator ted cruz. some of the recent muslim backlash is more than just rhetoric in the south bay authorities in the process of testing the white powder found in a letter that forced yesterday's evacuation of santa clara's muslim cair center. hazmat teams evacuated the office after workers discovered a letter containing white powder and a threatening message. cair's original executive director said only used the name infidel. acts like these only fan the flames of hate. >> i am angry that a civil rights organization would be
6:37 am
targeted by individuals seeking to silence it. seeking to suppress the right of american lms and further in this country. >> the fbi is expected to investigate the scare along with a similar one yesterday at cair's headquarters in washington, d.c. preliminary tests of the substps in the d.c. letter show nothing toxic. in san buernardino now dive teams will head to look for evidence. miguel has been in southern california since the shooting. a live report coming up at 6:45. the white house says president obama could soon take action of his own to keep people on the government's no-fly list from buying guns. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. the governor of connecticut is doing something similar. how do you think this is all going to play out? >> well, kris, the governor of connecticut said if washington can't get it done, excuse me.
6:38 am
they will. and, so, what they're planning to do is enact that same gun control measure in connecticut. and they're ready to sign it, but still have to get federal approval on that. what the white house says is that the president wants to expand background checks by essentially changing some rules. there's a loophole that allows high-volume dealers, requires them to do more back dprnd checks. if they qualify more people as high-volume dealers, they get more background checks. senior adviser valerie jared says they're going to look at something to expand those. no specific details yet. another example of the president going around congress to try to get something done. that is sure to set up a big fight only with congress, but with the nra and, kris, watch out, that one could land in court. >> sorry to make you suffer
6:39 am
through cough. but we know folks want to know what is happening with that today. gun enthusiasts say banning is unconstitutional. they say such a ban would violate the principle of being innocent until proven guilty. nevertheless, gun control advocates say if you are such a danger that you're not allowed on a plane, you certainly should not be able to buy a gun. california lawmakers like dianne feinstein, senators champion of gun legislation, so many people in washington still fear the gun lobby. >> right now congress hasn't shown an ability and willingness to act on this. if that's the case, i think governors have to do everything they can to protect the people they represent. >> now, governor brown here in california has not said anything yet publicly about what's happening in connecticut. but he has vetoed gun control legislation as recently as two year ago. >> all right, kris, thank you. for a lot of people, the weather probably woke you up this morning.
6:40 am
could have been thunder, lightning, hail, maybe just the rain, pitter-pattering on the top of your house. your roof. as we take a live look outside now. that is downtown san jose as the sun kind of showing up a little bit in the horizon there. kari hall has been tracking rolling waves of rain coming through the bay area. >> now moving through san francisco. just cleared the south bay and you can see the sun trying to come up there over the mountain. well, as we take a closer look at the next wave of rain moving into san francisco, south san francisco and parts of the east bay approaching oakland right now, expect it to rain for a few minutes before that moves on. and we will also see the sun peeking out before some heavier downpours move in right in time for lunch in the north bay. and then moving into parts of the peninsula and the south bay by early afternoon. that may create a wet condition, slick roads, once again, for the evening commute. and then we dry things out later on tonight as that system continues to move off to the east.
6:41 am
there will be another wave of rain heading through this weekend. i'll detail that and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. let's check in now with mike keeping us updated on several slow downs. >> yeah, kari, we'll start with that berkeley area. even though the crash near the maze did clear and we have recovery from powell down to the berkeley curve. this is west 80 free coming underneath university avenue and approaching that area. still very and folks filling in all lanes and start to break up a bit more as you approach. the map will show you the same thing for the speed sensors. very slow through the one corridor i showed you with the live camera and not so bad once you get past there, but the bay bridge metering lights are on and we're warning about wet conditions. those slick on and off ramps watch those speeds, folks. so far a lot of kkters here in the east bay and no major issues for the castro valley wide coming off of hayward. slowing for west 92 across the san mateo bridge. as the build heads over to the peninsula now and not really any problem for the tri-valley

this morning divers will head back into a small san bernardino lake to look for any evidence they may have left behind. miguel joining us live there this morning with more on what investigators think could be lying in that water. and, miguel, how does it link to the rest of the investigation? >> hey, sam, good morning. we don't know details. the fbi not providing us with a lot of information. when the sun finally comes up here and shoots into the air, we know fbi dive teams as well as sheriff dive teams will be back in the water. they believe the suspect and the shooters were in this area and may have left evidence inside this lake. they wouldn't say if it happened before the shooting or after the shooting. a five-hour time break from the shooting to the time they were killed in the shootout. so, investigators obviously being very methodical looking in every place they can for
