especially yesterday with those storms rolling through and now as we dry out this morning, it is in the lower 40s and patchy frost in some areas with some chilly air rolling in. it will be breezy and a slight chance of a shower and in the south bay, 66 degrees and much cooler after getting over an inch of rain over most of the bay area. we'll talk more about that and what to expect for that workweek. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's see what's happening now with mike. >> we do have winds gusting at times as you travel over spots like the bay bridge. you'll get caught with a gust or two. bay bridge toll plaza. the cash lanes back up, as well. nothing unusual except we'll suspect there is not a cash lane on either side. as we'll look at your map, the bay bridge and san mateo bridge and the richmond san rafael bridge, as well. gusts that catch you at the high rise. back to you. >> mike, thank you.

after a sweeping bay area wide storm communities now in full cleanup mode from the south bay out of san francisco, strong winds whipped through the region knocking over trees and muddying up roadways. a family is still re, as you ca see, the car is smashed in. seems like that popping up in several bay area cities. leaving cleanup crews with a heavy work load this morning. more on the damage that has been left behind. >> cut down a tall tree that fell at greenwich street. limbs stretched over a park car. part of the tree snapped. janet lane just drove in from sacramento and said the weather was wild there, too. >> there were car alarms going off from just the wind, the sound of the wind. we're setting off car alarms and trash bins were blown over in

the streets and it was extremely windy. things were everywhere. >> reporter: heavy rains and strong winds. on franklin, huge limbs fell taking down overhead lines. san francisco public works say they repaired for it trimming trees and clearing catch basins. >> had about two dozen trees down in san francisco. couple of them hit cars. that was the extent of the damage we've seen. no injuries, thankfully. all over the city. north beach to richmond and diamond heights it was across the board. >> reporter: the rain came fast leaving standing water. joann brown said she was on her way to church when she decided to try to clear a corner herself. >> i couldn't even get across the street. i just stopped. >> there's a lot of water. >> reporter: at an exit ramp near 280 workers tried to drained pockets of localized flood. they have been responding to various locations for hours.

>> all day long. all day long. everybody is out. anybody is out there already. well, people on the peninsula are getting plenty of help preparing for el nino. city officials in palo alto making sure neighbors get the assistance they need to protect their homes from the coming storms. sandbag installation advisors come to your home are available today through january 10th. >> these volunteers are able to come out and advise the homeowner on where the low lying areas appear to be in their house. what seems to be evident. problems with the flow of water off the property. >> volunteers and city staff helped load up free sandbags yesterday. each person was allowed about 15 bags. we want to see your weather pictures and video. we've created a gallery on our website. nbcbayarea.com. a link on the front page. you can scroll through and see what we already received and then share yours with us by posting them to our twitter and facebook pages.

happening later today, a special ceremony marking three years since the deadliest mass shooting at a grade school in our country's history. in 2012, 20 children and six adults died at the hands of a gunman at sandyhook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. today is the first anniversary of that tragedy where school is actually in session. the first and second anniversaries fell over the weekend. school leaders are going to mention the massacre on the campus intercom and parents actually received talking points to help discuss the weighty issue with their kids. an interfaith memorial service at a church in newtown later this evening. 4:35. the recent mass shootings in san bernardino and colorado springs has a congressman calling for change to prevent gun violence. this morning representative mike thompson is pushing legislation at the state capital to deny anyone who is on the federal government terrorist watch list from purchasing firearms.

they're concern the watchlist is overly broad. more than 2,000 suspected terrorists of legally purchased firearms in the u.s. since 2004. the biggest change that we're looking at in the bay area right now is with the forecast after getting a pelting of rain, if i might say so, good morning. >> good morning. such a heavy rain and it fell hard and fast and now we're just still tracking some spotty light showers farther to the north that may move into the north bay as we go into the afternoon. that mainly a north bay issue. as we look else where, we do see some chilly temperatures. look at napa now at 30 degrees and dropping below freezing there and we do have some 40s else where. looking at highs today that will be in the mid-50s all across the board with breezy winds and mostly clear skies to start and then we'll see some clouds moving in as we go into the afternoon to evening hours. we'll talk more about the rest of the week coming up, but let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> kari, we'll take you to

a very good monday morning to you. hope you're coming off a great weekend. what are we in store for weather wise? >> it will be a nice workweek compared to the weekend where we had all kinds of stuff going on. if you're out there and you saw the rain falling and it was just coming down in sheets and then we had the sun shining on the other side. so, we just had a mix of it all this weekend. now, you can tell by this camera that the way it shakes, there is still some gusty winds out there and you have to deal with that throughout the day. but we are going to have a chance to settle down from a wild weekend. looking at this rainfall year the totals we had so far today. over 5 1/2 inches for the year now for santa rosa and san francisco over 3 inches. in oakland 2 inches of rain. we had quite a bit for the south bay. actually, getting close to the percentage of average. we are really making some improvements here, but still some work to do in the north bay

and san francisco, oakland and farther to the north. now, looking at the system that brought us the wild weather yesterday. it has since moved to the east, but still some lingering showers right behind that and that may move into the north bay. after a chilly start, mostly clear skies and we're taking a look at the south bay. in morgan hill, 40 degrees now and 37 degrees downtown and saratoga now at 38 degrees. once again with the chilly temperatures we do have some breezy wind coming in from the northwest and it stays at about 25 to 30 miles an hour through at least most of the morning and then into parts of the afternoon. we'll have wind speeds at about 20 to maybe 25 miles an hour. so, still breezy, nonetheless. going hour by hour in san francisco. a lot of sunshine. highs today it will be topping out in the mid-50s and cool again tonight. so, when will we see rain again? as we take a look at the futurecast another round of rain moving in between late friday night and early saturday. so, we do have a little bit of a

break here. how is it looking on the roads now, mike? >> karia little bit of a break there because the roadways are dried out and a nice, easy drive starting our monday off and warning folks about the slippery conditions. today much better. as we at your map just a tiny build out of the altamont pass and no problem over here towards dublin or the rest of the tri-valley. we zoom out and smooth drive as far as our speed sensors are concerned and wind gust catch you across the bridges and check the bay bridge toll plaza where you have all that backup and a minor delay ten minutes reported by the b.a.r.t. system in downtown oakland. track maintenance and that should clear up and we'll track it. back to you. a red flag for folks who use twitter. the company is warning some of its users of a possible state-sponsored hack. >> for the rest of the news we turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> sam and laura, good monday

overnight track maintenance. roadways through the same area. note as we look at the north bay and then the south bay and east west bridges are likely to get caught with gusts of wind. back to you. a union city school is getting a new name and it's making history. this friday alvuroddo middle school will be officially renamed. the name change will make the school the first in the country to be named in honor of filipino americans. they were filipino american leaders who helped organize farm unions in the 1960s. 30% of students living around the school are philippifilipino americans. as we are reporting, today is no doubt an emotional one in newtown, connecticut. >> not far from that school, another school is trying to honor those with 26 days of kindness. notre dame high school now marks the tragedy at sandy hook with acts of kindness, big and small,

to honor the 26 people killed in that massacre. from donating to the homeless to sending heartfelt letters to first responders. >> bad to happen trying to counteract that bad with some good. >> school leaders say that now that kindness is part of the curr curriculum. they're hoping 26 days can morof into a year-round idea. >> very nice idea there. slammed with storm activity for most of the weekend, now it's time to clean up what's left behind. there's been progress in many bay area communities, but a well-known san francisco beach still a wash and debris. tightening our nation's gun laws. a conversation consuming our nation's capital. but today it takes center stage in sacramento.
