and even though chp says not a concern, you still watch the conditions and we have seen gusts move our camera around. a little slowing through hayward and 680 south through pleasanton. a little lighter in volume and the bay bridge metering lights are on and new crash around 880. and a typical spot where we start the slowing anyway. south bay not a big deal. san jose 101 and live camera shows you lighter traffic than a few moments ago. back to you. cleanup after the storm. this was the scene across much of the bay area yesterday as heavy rains with strong winds brought down trees causing plenty of damage in several neighborhoods. take a look at that. that washed ashore and broke apart everywhere. the reason it is still out there the national park service says because downed trees and branches kept crews very busy yesterday, which is why the cleanup of the container debris did not finish by dark last night. the work continues at some point today to get rid of the rest of the mess and some packing material that was inside the container that came off of a tanker friday night. 11 other containers fell off that ship and no reports say they washed up anywhere else. thankfully no hazardous material involved. removing two dozen trees that were down, including one at greenwich street over a parked car over on laum bard and also part of a tree snapped and on franklin huge limb fell taking down overhead lines. public works, i should say, says it prepared for the weather pruning trees and clearing catch basins ahead of time. >> anybody is out there already. >> you're hearing from one of member many city workers

dedzicated yesterday to draining pockets of localized flooding like one near the 280 exit ramp and a woman who said she came upon this pool of water and couldn't pass. she went out there with the boots on and tried to clean it. hiring a contractor to lead that cleanup. but we're unsure when. th live here in san francisco, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." from san francisco to the peninsula highway 84 near woodside is back open after crews worked to clear mud and rock from the roadway there. in nearby menlo park this tree just snapped and crashed down on to three parked cars. it happened on bay shore boulevard. you can see the back windshield of car there just shatd ertered. inside a child's car seat but no one was hurt. that's the good news there.

in san hobig branch came down on sixth street hitting two parked cars and branch also took out a power line causing a small outage that has since been repaired. take a look at this, the massive tree falling on a home and a car in san pablo. look at the size of that. no one hurt here, as well. but definitely some nerve wrecking moments and very close call for some of the homeowners there. sam? >> the wet weather had more in store tragically. numerous crashes across the bay area, at least one of which turned out to be deadly. a single car accident claimed the lives of two parents and seriously injured one of their children. the car might have hydroplaned and then rolled over on eastbound interstate 580 right near west grant line road yesterday morning. the children, only 5 and 6 were both taken to the hospital one having suffered head trauma. thankfully both are expected to be okay. 6:03 right now. whipping winds putting bay area pilots on edge.

miles per hour. imagine that. many airports not surprisingly are closed. laura,ening later today, a special ceremony marking three years since the deadliest mass shooting at a grade school in u.s. history. in 2012, 20 children and 6 adults died at the hands of a gunman at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. today is the first anniversary of that tragedy where school is in session. the first and second anniversaries fell on the weekend. school leaders are going to mention the massacre on the campus intercom and parents have received talking points to help discuss the weighty issue with their kids. to commemorate the lives lost an interfaith memorial service at a church intown this evening. while people in newtown will pause to mark the somber anniversary, a bay area lawmaker will spend the morning pushing for tighter gun control. wants to ban people on government watch lists from being able to purchase guns. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us now and not the only

lawmaker pushing for this type of legislation. >> in fact we talked about this. you mentioned newtown, connecticut. president obama also asking congress to prevent people on the's terror watch list from buying a gun. this time, though, the ideas being proposed by that california congressman who, himself, is a gun owner. mike thompson proposed legislation that would ban anyone on the federal terror watch list from buying a gun and that is what he did on monday circulating a petition to force an issue on, a voten that very issue. today the congressman will host a forum on gun violence in sacramento. assembled a panel that includes law enforcement and gun owners and mental health experts and survivors of gun violence, as well. prevents the centers for disease to research gun violence as they do with traffic deaths. the panel gets under way at 9:30

this morning. of course, we're following that for you. now, as the north coast lawmaker seeks federal action here at home. a gun buy back event in san francisco and more than 150 guns were turned in within the first half of that event. and people also gathered to march in san francisco dressed in orange trying to draw attention to their cause. congresswoman jackie spear and other lawmakers were also there. they did the same thing in walnut creek nearly 150 people marched under the slogan, we don't need a moment of silence, we need action. now, each of these events was planned to coincide with that somber anniversary that we talked about. the sandy hook shooting in which 20 school children were shot at school along with six of their teachers and staff. now, you mentioned connecticut and that state did move closer to banning people on the no fly list last week and the governor of that state said he would sign that bill as soon as it hits his desk. sam and laura. >> very heavy hearts on that anniversary, thank you very much, kris 6:07 right now.

get started for your workweek here. whatever you have in store. a lot of kids last week before they go on break, kari. >> bundle the kids up before they head out the door. now, i'm watching the rain for you across the northwestern parts of california and it has been kind of fizzling out before making it here. but grab the umbrella in the north bay just in case because you may still have a spot shower popping up there. a cold start to the morning in napa. it's 30 degrees below freezing and you may have to scrape some frost off of the windshield in some smautpots, as well. looking at highs today in the mid-50s all across the bay area from the coast of the inland l areas to and we'll see more of that weather heading into the week. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes and let's see what is happening with the commute now with mike. >> looking that bay bridge. that is what is happening at the bay bridge toll plaza and we have things starting to slow for all lanes but the fastrak lanes

you can see that visible advantage you have there. a big advantage if you car pool. three or more folks across the bridge, consider it, if you can. looking at your maps, no major issues. east shore freeway we had a crash that's off the shoulder. all lanes are cleared there and a little distraction and not a lot of slowing. a crash 101 at lucas valley road has cleared to the shoulder and over here behind the shield, south 101 getting off towards the off ramp and the freeway itself moves well towards the golden gate bridge. as we move your map a little slowing southward. the tri-valley has your build and so does 880 through hayward. typical patterns we see. the south bay a small build for 101 and nothing big and the peninsula looks great. live look here for fremont. a live camera southbound just before you get to the tesla plant and traffic is building a bit into the south bay, but no real issues and you're at speed. back to you. >> all right, mike, commuters can take comfort in this.

travelers heading out for the holidays, as well, can inlowest prices at the pump since the recession. a gallon of regular gas is at 2.02. that's down 58 cents a gallon from this time last year according to aaa. drivers in half the states are already paying less than $2 a gallon. our average remains at $2.65 a gallon and more in san francisco where the gallon of gas is averaging $2.74. and in san jose a whole penny less at $2.61 a gallon. lower prices at the pump are expected to last some time because of a high crude oil supply. >> 202 sounds nice, just not for us. coming up next, let the force awaken. the weight wait almo the wait almost over. take you live to los angeles, light sabers and all where the movie debuts in just an hour.

well, the kids are going to be asking for it, but it's getting harder and harder to get one of these. hoverboards for christmas. >> the kids, the mama wants one, too. scott mcgrew, amazon stopped selling them. >> there's so many concerns, laura, about the safety. and it's not about falling off them, it's about them catching fire. amazon has become the latest to say no to these hoverboards. it wants manufacturers to provide the online retailer with documentation proving these toys went through the proper testing, including underwriters laboratory. the hoverboards are catching fire. and the ones that do catch fire seem to have problems with their lithium battery. we're guessing they're cheaper to knock puff this guy was lucky because his hoverboard caught fire in a park. if this happened at your house. you can't put out a lithium with

water. ask for a co2 fire extinguisher, as well. just when you thought the concern over drones couldn't get worse. the maker of drones, the leading maker is offering forward looking infrared heat cameras. perfect for finding people lost in the woods or agriculture and some people will feel the drones are even more invasive. nasa is looking for new astronauts. it opened up the astronaut applications this morning and this is serious. the person who applies today could be the first person on mars. this is astronaut ed lu playing chopsticks on the international space station. i asked him is being an astronaut as fun as it sounds. >> you know, you know this when you go in there. it's the greatest job you're ever going to have in your life. okay. and appreciate while you're there the finest group of individuals you'll ever work with in your life and that's

moderate winds this morning, kari. >> still been windy after that storm system rolled through yesterday. and, you know, just driving around after all of that heavy rain. tree limbs down and all kinds of a mess going on across the bay area. so, now as we clean up, dry out, it's still breezy and it is chilly out there. let's take a look back at how much rain we had yesterday. some of the rainfall totals across parts of the bay area, santa rosa, 0.8 inches of rain and napa 0.3. napa 0.75 and oakland 0.5 and we had many spots measuring about 0.5 of rain approaching an inch in some spots and you're probably looking at this like, i had a little bit more than this in my rain gauge. there were many spots ahead over an inch of rain and now, once again, we are feeling some cool air and now that the storm system has moved off to the east and that cold air is rolling down from the north. napa is only 30 degrees now. and still breezy. here's a look at the wind forecast and what we can expect

throughout the rest of the day. wind speeds from the northwest at about 20, 25 miles per hour and then at times gusting up to about 30 miles an hour. even higher along the coast. and half moon bay we're looking at 36, 37 miles an hour. that may still be enough to knock over some tree limbs. and going hour by hour in oakland. we start out with some clear skies. in the mid-40s and then rising into the mid-50s. briefly hitting 57 degrees and that's what we can expect over the next couple of days. nice, quiet and mostly clear but chilly mornings. some patchy frost we'll have to deal with, especially in the north bay. and then more clouds moving in on wednesday with highs in the mid-50s. so, you may be wondering, when will it rain again? we will have a mostly dry week and then heading into saturday. yes, in time for the weekend. that's when we will see some more rain moving in. possibly next maeonday, too. still looking good and more rain on that forecast. >> kari, we have a typical

commute happening and that's great. your pattern here building for 580 in through dublin. and as we look at drier roads, we'll look at the map, as well. the speed sensors do show a bit of a build and a crash right 580 and trz there's the volume coming out of the altamont and no problem and 680 kind of condensing towards pleasanton. as we look towards the rest of your commute towards the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on. upper east shore and also coming out of walnut creek and pleasant hill and southbound 242 and 680 show a little build. nothing dramatic there or for the north bay. a smooth drive over towards the city via the bay bridge which builds the volume and golden gate bridge also moves smoothly and the south bay northbound 101 shows slowing for san jose and start to see that build for 85 just north of 17. indicates more traffic coming in towards cupertino. live look shows you an easy drive northbound past university

happening now. the force aligns in hollywood. three days before the new "star wars" movie. >> the stars are aligning, as well. we are talking about what might be hollywood's hottest ticket ever. tonight's premiere of "the force awakens" in southern california. rick is live in where fans have waited a very long time for this release. we saw plenty of light sabers before you before, rick. are they still there? >> there's still a lot of stuff here and you joined us just in time because crews are about to do some more construction work to get everything set up for the premiere. we convinced them to let us stay here. you can see this is where the world premiere will happen. this is where the stars will be making their way through for the premiere tonight right here on hollywood boulevard. a huge closure out here a half mile stretch of hollywood boulevard is also closed and that's a big deal when you consider the academy awards only closes down one street here in hollywood. this is, again, expected to be

one of the biggest premieres in hollywood history. there is also a group of people camping out here. several dozen people camping in front of the tcl chinese theater. they will not be able to see the movie at the three theaters screening it tonight, but that group will get to watch the stars show up here. they got tickets to sit in the bleachers out here on hollywood boulevard. as for tonight's event, it is huge. security is tight. 70 additional officers out here, as well, as well as a lot of security officers and some screening like metal detectors and things like that. a big event out here. a lot of excitement for this premie premiere. of course, a lot of people are waiting for it. one woman who is camping here. she is going to be flying back to london to watch the premiere there. so, you know, of course, these fans are die hard. they have been waiting a long time for this and soon enough we will all get to watch "the force awakens." >> some of us may have to wait a

couple weeks for the line down there. >> could be. finally people camping out for something other than iphones. thank you very much. rick from hollywood. 6:25. back in the bay area, happening today. opponents lay out their reasons why money for a new jail in san francisco would be better spent else where. san francisco is supposed to receive $80 million in state funding to help cover costs for a new $240 million jail facility. but critics, including some supervisors believe the city should turn down that funding and, instead, spend the money on mental health services and affordable housing. the supersors plan to explain their reasoning today. new details now on a crash that lit up social media. have you seen this? you can certainly see why. a massive metal beam crashed right through the windshield of a bmw driving on interstate 280 on friday. we now know the truck driver who lost the beam off a flatbed has been cited for it. last week the san jose fire

highs today reaching 56. so, it will be cooler than average and breezy, but sunny. and a few spot showers may hit the north bay. i'll detail that and to expect the rest of the week coming up. but let's take it to the east bay with mike. >> we'll start with oakland camera struggling a bit from the wind. rooftop camera getting caught with a few gusts and not a big concern for some drivers. watch the high rises across san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge. east shore freeway westbound. your commute direction coming underneath university avenue overcrossing. somewhere in this area we are supposed to have crash. that was reported to chp but i see any lanes blocked. the map will show you the speed sensors slow through berkeley and west 80 around san pablo. another crash moving to the shoulder and that's a little build for the upper east shore. all your usual cuspects showing typical pattern and not so bad for this monday morning start. look at that. heading down towards sunol and

the napa concussionmgressman wh to ban people on watch list from buying guns. not the only mawmaker pushing for this kind of legislation. >> you mention newtown, connecticut, and the governor of connecticut is pushing for very similar ledge there and it's close. also president obama asked congress to prevent people on the nation's terror watchlist from buying a gun. this time, though, the idea is being proposed by a congressman who himself is a gun owner. mike thompson of st. huhelena proposed the legislation that would close the loophole that would allow someone on the fbi terrorist watch list to walk into a gun store and pass a wack background check and leave with weapons. he circulated a petition to leave a vote on the issue and no go members signed on. today the congressman will host and law enforcement, gun owners, gun dealers, mental health experts and also survivors of gun violence. thompson is also pushing to end

banning people frbuying guns. we're hearing more about the terror attack in san bernardino. the "new york times" is reporting one of the shooters malik passed three background checksber being admit under to the u.s. on a fiancee visa. but it appears her social media accounts were left completely ignored. whether authorities missed some glaring red flags. on social media malik posted her desire to be a part of violent jihad which was only recently discovered by authorities. in the meantime a search of a lake where she and her husband may have dumped potential evidence and the fbi is not revealing if they recovered anything of value. since attack in san bernardino, muslim communities say they have found themselves the constant target of hate. the latest incident happened yesterday morning in hawthorn in southern california. right now an investigation is under way after two mosques were

vandalized. police say that vandals spray painted graffiti at both mosques and left the device that looked an awful lot like a hand grenade in the driveway. this morning a potential answer to who set fire to another mosque in san bernardino county. 23-year-old carl dial is accused of a hate crime. the mosque believes ignorance was the cause for what he finds to be an act of terrorism. >> and simply we have found that ignorance is usually the greatest culprit whens like this happen. whether it's on our side or anyone else's side. lack of knowledge is usually the problem. >> the suspect's family says he was consumed by what he was seeing on social media. he remains behind bars on $150,000 baond. police shot and wounded a man who tried to run him over with his car in the peninsula. happened late sunday night in the peninsula. officers s s say they were

attempting a traffic stop when the suspect drove his car straight at them. police say he came to a stop about a block away. the suspect was taken into custody with nonlife threatening injuries. a teenager escaped an attempted kidnapping just north of berkeley. police say it happened late saturday saturday night near the intersection of sonoma avenue and nielson street in the city of albany. officers say a man tried to force a teenage girl into a parked truck as she walked by. police say the girl was able to get away from the suspect who then took off in a pretty well maintained white pickup truck with a passenger inside. several neighbors made calls to the police deafter hearing noise from that struggle. the calm and the cleanup after the storm. this was the scene across much of the bay area yesterday as heavy rains paired with very strong winds brought down trees and caused plenty of damage in several neighborhoods. chuang joins us with more on the cleanup efforts not only in land but also in the ocean rbs as well, steph. >> that's right, sam. the coast guard warning people out in the water to watch out because containers fell off the ship. 11 or so unaccounted for. but national park service says this scene downed trees and branches kept crews so busy yesterday that cleanup of the container debris could not be done by dark yesterday. so, the cleanup continues at baker beach at some point today to collect the rest of that broken up container and some packing material that was inside it. the container came off a tanker friday night. no hazardous material, though, involved. now, across the city, plenty of localized flooding like this one near the 280 exit ramp as crews out to drain and cleanup and some taking matters in their own hands and one woman was on her way to church when she stopped at a large pool of water.

to be in their house and what seems to be evident problems with the flow of water off the property. >> volunteers and city staff help load up sandbags for palo alto residents yesterday. each person was allowed about bags. but it pays to prepare. >> you're building up a little bit of a fortress outside your home but with good reason. we've seen some rain here and see some more at some point, but not today, kari. >> good to have the advisors to come out because most people don't know the correct way to use sandbags. as we dry out, get ready for whatever may be ahead. still tracking some light, spotty showers. i'll give you a heads up as we start to see that moving into the north bay. still a slight chance of some rain there. otherwise, it's clear and it is chilly as you step out. it's only 35 degrees in livermore. san jose 39 and napa is below freezing this morning. you may find yourself scraping off some frost from the windshield. into the day, our temperatures will be cooler than average. reaching into the mid to upper

we mostly saw about 0.5. you may be thinking, wait a minute, i had more on my rain gauge. many spots measuring over an inch of rain. the storm system moved off to the east and still some lingering shower skz that may make it into the north bay today. you keep the umbrella close by just in case and it is chilly. let's drop in the north bay where the temperatures are the coolest. napa 32 degrees and in luma it's 38 degrees and 39 now in santa rosa and also breezy, too. with some patchy frost developing in some spots. it will stay breezy as we go through the day. winds sustained at about 25 to 30 miles an hour. little bit higher along the coast and look at what happens at half moon bay. 36 miles an hour winds throughout the evening. and going hour by hour in san francisco. a lot of sunshine. we're starting out in the upper 40s. and then reaching the mid 50s by 3:00. and that is where it will stay. heading into tonight, a few more

chuang live in baker beach where rough winds causeded some shipping containers. >> kept crews so busy yesterday that cleanup of that container debris could not be done by dark yesterday. we actually have new video from drew loflin. you can see green plastic crates from one container thrown across baker beach. the cleanup continues today and the packing material that was left inside. the container came off friday night but safely no hazardous materials involved. crews cut and removed about two dozen downed trees yesterday including one at greenwich street and on frank huge limbs fell taking down overhead lines. the shipping company is in charge of the cleanup and, again, it is supposed to continue at some point today. whether the beach is closed is dependent on how much debris is
