in flames. a product already 'flagged' for safety concerns ahead of the holiday...nearly burns up inside a bay area house. laura/vo and a young woman chases down a car thief. the brave nearly burns up inside of a bay area house. a young woman faces down thieves. plus, officer os respond to a domestic call in gilroy only to find a man and woman in the heated dispute in a parking lot. what happened next forced officers to respond violently. "today in the bay" starts right now. one kay in the books, it's tuesday morning. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. good morning, kari hall. >> it is cold again this morning. some freezing temperatures in the valleys.

we are looking at now 37 degrees in the north bay. and 44 degrees in san francisco and the south bay. here's where we're headed today into the upper 50s, once again. pretty much like yesterday with some breezy winds and sunshine and feeling a little bit cooler than what we should be feeling for this time of year. so, i'll give you an idea of what to expect with more rain headed in for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> kari, little bit lighter for december typically than we do the rest of the year. a lot of folks are shifting their morning schedules. right now a backup for the cash lanes but they're looking to clear. might have opened all the cash lanes, hour emoryville camera. the camera trembles a bit. no wind advisories there any of the bridges, just a note to watch this. and the maps. the speed sensors no delay across the bay and that's a good start. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. a hoverboard ignites setting

an east bay home on fire. the family tells us they bought their hoverboard as a gift for their teenage daughter but when she went to plug it in to charge it the device exploded sending flames up the wall of the house. the young girl was able to move it to the front door before the hoverboard could do any major damage. one of a string of fires connected to hoverboards. amazon removed them from their site and airlines are not allowing them on planes. a neighborhood left stunned and frightened this morning as police searched for a car thief who shot a teenage girl in the neck. 911 calls from the area near coleman avenue about 7:00 last night. police say a 17-year-old girl left her car running while she talked to friends in san jose. until she realized her car was being stolen. the victim and her friends then tried to chase down the car thief with another car when she found herself confronting the

suspect at an intersection. that's when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot her. a short time later they found the stolen toyota a half mile away and neighbors are shocked. >> it's crazy. yeah, really crazy. and to happen here in this neighborhood because it's really quiet and i usually walk my dog at this hour, too. now i'm like going to stay inside. >> the 17-year-old girl was grazed in the deck and is expected to be okay. authorities this morning have not yet identified the man shot and killed last night by a police officer in gilroy responding to a domestic disturbance. all of this unfolding at about 7:00 at an apartment complex near gilroy high school. a violent fight involving a couple when the officers arrived they found a man and woman in a heated dispute. investigators say what happened next is still not entirely clear, but one of the officers felts that either his own life or the woman's life was in

danger and that officer fired. >> he was presented with something that he felt was life-threatening and had to make a decision there. somebody in our community is dead as a result of their actions. >> the woman is okay. the unidentified officer who fired his gun is now on paid leave. the first fatal gilroy police shooting in five years. at 4:34. a couple of the officers who shot and killed a stabbing suspect in san francisco already face excessive force allegations from previous incidents. five officers opened fire two weeks ago after he refused to drop his knife. the xanler reports two of those officers are already under scrutiny. one case involved the 2009 shooting of two men in the back when one of the officers worked in antioch. another is a police beating in the bay view back in 2013. that's become the subject of a federal civil rights case. some activists have been calling for the police chief resignation

since woods' death. a widely publicized murder case drawing attention to sanctuary cities heading to court in san francisco later today. mexican national juan francisco lopez is facing murder charges for the charges of kate steinle. she was sightseeing with her family when she was shot and killed. he confessed to the shooting, he says that weapon fired accidentally. his attorney says he found the gun on the pier and somehow it went off when he picked it up. lopez sanchez is due in court today for a hearing on his attorney's motion to get the murder charnels against him dropped. it is a cold start to our now tuesday morning. want to check in with kari. pretty fridgid out there. >> morning for the coat and gloves and all of that, especially if you have to be outside for a period of time. in san jose 44 degrees and we do have some spots that are

freezing. and a look at all the mic microclimates and where we're headed today. into the mid-50s, once again. pretty much like yesterday. no major changes here. still be breezy with gusts up to 25 miles per hour and mostly sunny skies and we'll see this into the next couple of days, but there will be a huge change in time for the weekend. so, i'll fill you in on what to expect coming up. let's see what's happening with the commute now with mike. >> not much of a commute. right now looking great for dublin. as we look at your map, we do not see the slowing coming out of the altamont pass. down just below 60 miles per hour. we're expecting a lighter flow, even though it's tuesday. lighter for a tuesday means that you'll still have your jams northbound through the south bay, but that's later on. right now at speed along the peninsula and the south bay and no delays for the north bay. we'll show you that fin a secon. overly cautious or singling out a large ammunition purchase

sporting goods store. a story you'll only see on nbc bay area. she asked about buying eight boxes of ammunition at a dick's sporting goods in fremont. two days later police showed up at her home saying the store clerk had alerted them. she is a firearms instructor who's preparing to join the lapd. >> i'm not muslim, but even if i was, i don't think that is grounds for them to call the police on me instantly. >> the officers have apologized to sanga. a store manager for dick's referred our questions to its corporate office and we have not heard back yet. now to an investigative unit exclusive. drinking, smoking, even brawling. 20,000 feet into the sky. unruly passengers can cause headaches for both travelers and airlines. investigative unit combed through years of flight records and showed a dramatic increase in complaints. disrupting a commercial flight is a serious crime.

breezy after that storm system rolled through over the weekend and you're still left with the wind coming in from the northwest. some dry and cool conditions. and as you step out, it's only 35 degrees in concord and napa. it's 44 degrees in san jose, as well as san francisco. and we will see those temperatures dipping a couple more degrees. winds coming in from the north. it's still breezy at about 10 to 15 miles per hour and then at times the gusts a little bit higher and it's bringing in some very dry air today. looking at mostly clear skies. a lot of sunshine. breezy and cool. so, as we take it hour by hour in san jose. at 7:00 as the sun rises, 41 it degrees. into the lunchtime hour, upper 40s to lower 50s and we'll hit the mid-50s today and then it starts to come right back down. as we go into the next couple of days. dry, clear cool morning and dry afternoons and some fairly cool

temperatures, but look at what happens early saturday morning. late friday night early saturday the system starts to drop in from the north bay and progress to the south. and then into sunday, we'll have another one moving in that will linger into the monday morning commute. and at this point, it looks like some of the rainfall totals may, once again, top over an inch of rain all across the bay area. so, another good soaker headed our way. if you're heading to christmas in the park this weekend, just keep in mind you may be able to get it in during the rain breaks. friday it looks wet late night into early saturday. temperatures will be cool with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike. >> kari, as we get towards the end of the school year and the year in general, a lighter commute that packs in across town traffic midday as you're talking about a lot of folks trying to get that done during the week. getting this done now, the bridge crew moving the center divider. that stays on your typical

look for consumer data and inflation and the fed begins its two day policy meeting where they are widely expected to raise interest rates. airlines getting us to our destinations on time. 87% of flights arrived on time in october. the third best month ever. delta and alaskan air had their best ratings. however, customer complaints are still rising up 32%. speaking of travel, a lot of us going over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house. up more than 1% from last year. improving job market, rising incomes and lower gas prices. hard to believe christmas is just ten days away. >> we're debating. if you're in the car with us, what are you going to put on the

i'm looking at some words on kari's big screen right now. frost, chilly and clear. nothing says the holidays like some chilly weather, kari. >> let's bring in the christmas season with some cold weather. isn't that the way it is supposed to be? not this cold. we had am frost out there, especially in the north bay and in the valley and we are going to see it warming up into the upper 50s heading into the afternoon. a lot of sunshine. you can tell by that camera there. still shaking around.

breezy starting out the day and we'll still have some breezes heading into the aernoon. into the weekend, though, some changes not as dry as we go into the next few days. i'll detail that coming up. let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> kari, i wanted to show everybody a completely clear toll plaza, but that's only ten seconds worth of complete clearing when the earlier backup starts to form, once again. it is tuesday, we're getting ready for that 5:00 shift and seeing a smooth drive right now, though. we'll look at your maps where we don't see any backups on the approach or upper east shore freeway. even the south bay and peninsula very sparsely populated. i want to show you right here the green zone through fremont. even though we had the trouble for the emoryville camera. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. today crews will continue to pick up the mess left behind from this weekend's storm in pacifica. strong waves caused a dozen slipping containers to slip from a cargo ship friday and they're

still trying to clean up that debris. ten of the containers are still missing and floating off the coast this morning. >> can't pick this stuff up by hand. i tried. there's too much of it. >> we'll actually use leaf blowers and blow it into piles and we're blowing it into big, plastic bags. >> the national park service closed down baker beach to facilitate that cleanup. still no word on when it will reopen. 4:56 right now. happening later today san francisco supervisors planning on rolling up their sleeves and getting down to the details this in bringing together the future home of the golden state warriors. last week supervisors unanimously approved the plan and now it's time to hammer out specifics that includes a transportation plan. at issue is what on tap for discussion later today. the arena is on track to open in time for the start of the 2018 season. it is 4:56 right now. memorial signs for fallen south bay police officer will move one step closer to reality today.

san jose city council members are expected to sign off on a new free way sign honoring michael johnson. johnson died after responding to a call last march involving a suicidal gunman. state lawmakers in september approved designated part of highway 87 for johnson. the signs are expected to be in place by this spring. >> very nice there. 4:57. coming up next, buyer beware. this christmas after hearing stories about the dangers of a popular gift this season. one bay area family finds out first hand the product can be highly flammable. plus, a woman trying to take back her car from a thief unknowingly risks her life. the close call that has police searching for a suspect this morning.
