and 58 degrees in san francisco and east bay peninsula and 60 in the tri-valley. getting a little bit better, but there is some more rain in the forecast and i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. let's see what's happening in the north bay now with mike. >> start with a nice, easy drive but we have two north bay crashes to talk about. now, we'll look at your map. southbound 101. just before you get to our camera shot at lucas valley road. we have a crash reportedly blocking part of one lane and try to get both vehicles over to the shoelder and one speeding earlier we heard. farther north ina rosa and southbound 101 right around we do have a big rig involved in a crash there. no major slowing. as we zoom out the bay bridge metering lights are on and little slowing past the san mateo bridge for the nimitz and live shot westbound. more cars but no drama. back to you. >> thank you very much. little bit of drama in vallejo this morning.

the house fire that knocked out power in vallejo. started at 1:00 this morning. firefighters say they arrived to find a fire in the garage and flames shooting from the roof. power is now out for many homes on the block. the cause is now investigation. a developing story now. a gruesome discovery in a well-known san francisco neighborhood. human remains found in a planter box right outside homes near alamo square. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us now. a neighbor actually noticed the bones at first sticking out of the dirt, but didn't know what they were right away. >> tending to a little garden there. if investigators know whether those bones are those of a woman or a man or an adult or a child, they're not saying it yet. we can tell you the process to identify bones could take weeks sometimes months. in fact, confirming that the bones are human has taken quite some time in and of itself. the bones were discovered a few

days before thanksgiving and a neighbor shared this video of detectives sifting through the planter in the surrounding area where those remains were found. that planter was on the sidewalk between the apartment building and the street, but investigators also sifted through this planter, which is attached to the building because that's where the marin county sheriff cadaver dogs made a hit. >> especially when they come to human remains. the big question is, when did itb. how long were these bones in there? trying to find, you know, witnesses, or people in the neighborhood who may have seen something. >> it's just weird to have a part of someone's human jaw in the planter next door. >> the homicide unit is now handling this investigation. but, again, the bones were discovered in a garden planter between the apartment buildings near alamo square. if you can help to solve that mystery, give san francisco police a call. sam and laura. >> very strange case there, thank you very much. this is a tragic case to

tell you about we've been following. new details in an abuse case. investigators have not ruled out the possibility. two siblings found dead in a redding storage locker were actually killed in salinas where police searched a home. so far they're only saying 6-year-old and the 3-year-old sister died outside shasta county. they're expected to update the case this afternoon. redding officer os found another sibling, a 9-year-old sister suffering from severe abuse. until recently, the children were living with their aunt in that salinas home. and her 17-year-old companion are now in custody. new this morning, the search still on for a shooter who injured a man in an act of road rage. police say someone shot up a car driven down stony point road right near an onramp to highway last night. one of the bullets hit the driver in the left side, but he's expected to be okay. both he and his passenger report

some kind of verbal exchange with the driver of another car right before that shooting. been who may have seen anything is asked to please call santa rosa police. a very public funeral service expected today for the stabbing suspect killed by san francisco police earlier this month. the shooting of mario woods more than a dozen times by officers is now the focus of a federal civil rights lawsuit. activists in the city's bay view didistrict where woods lived claimed the 26-year-old was used at target practice. they say he refused to drop his knife and failed to respond to pepper spray and bean bag rounds. the funeral this morning is expected to a large crowd. the union representing san francisco police officers is throwing its weight behind tasers. union leadership say they're an important weapon. >> they're working with the mayor's office. the office of the chief of police. ands of the police commission who adopt a pilot program that

will allow tasers. >> i think that it's too simplistic to say that everything that's happening with the san francisco police department will be resolved by having tasers. >> his opposition to tasers. critics say they can cause death and/or sometimes overuse. no school today for some kids, not the reason that you might suspect. cold weather starting to impact area students. no heat means no school. that is the harsh reality in east palo alto. classes canceled for the rest of the week. the school was forced to turn off the gas heater earlier this month because of a leak. well, it's safe now, but crews are still to need to fix that problem in the next few weeks. teachers are doing their best to keep classrooms warm, but all of those space heaters have overwhelmed the school's aging electrical system. >> it worked out perfectly fine last week. we were warm and cozy. but with inclement weather outside, we weren't able to get

galore! firefighters in southern new video tashow you this morning makes the lizards galore. firefighters in southern california rescued hundreds of them. that was a bowe constrictor. a heater kept some of the pets warm, sparking the fire at a store near the border with los angeles. there are 300 reptiles in all. i would have hated that call. lizards, snakes, turtles, the works. there are also tarantulas and 300 animals in all they're saying. now being taken to the county animal shelter for their protection. >> the works.

how would you like to come face-to-face with an aguana when you wake up this morning. angry flight attendants promising to stage protests around the world, that includes right here in the bay area. the union representing 24,000 united airlines flight attendants calling for a new contract. the union cites united's merger with continental five years ago and still the lack of a joint contract. flight attendants will picket at 14 international airports and that includes sfo. 6:15. a contract isn't the only thing that united lacked. >> scott mcgrew, it doesn't have a ceo. >> that's right. one ceo resigned and another one had a heart attack six weeks into the job. united is waiting for him to get better, but investors are worried that that airline. the runner of yahoo! marissa mayer looking over a multi-page to the board. the criticism was written by

shareholder eric jackson and the ebs pensive free food in the cafeterias. mayer brought that idea over from google. the total cost of the free food works out in $1.8 million a year. based on roughly 260 work days. that's $412,000 a. also criticizes many of yahoo!'s new products like yahoo live text which has texting and video, but video of people you can't hear. you remember this? it was released in july. nobody remembers this. whatsapp is incredibly popular. we gasped at the time and that turned out to be super cheap. about half billion people use whatsapp. millions of brazilians moved instantly over to another app called telegram. they're not using yahoo! text either. martin shkreli arrested.

it dates back to old accusations. he is, well, thinking when he was a hedge fund manager he was buying up drug companies in a previous case. the feds say he bought a drug company and then according to those accusation s siphoned off to pay for debt at his hedge fund. you probably got his attention, he got your attention when he bought the drug company touring pharmaceuticals. raised the price of one of the pills by hundreds of dollars. daraprim used by cancer patients and pregnant women. it could be deadly to unborn. that's why pregnant women shouldn't come contact with the cat's litter box. we'll follow this arrest and bring you the latest. he recently bought a bay area company, as well. we're on top of this, as is cnbc. >> very interesting. thanks a lot. this is funny to see. the president is running wild.

mid-50s there and then as we head over towards sierra, squall valley, alpine meadows. we will have some chilly air lingering with more clouds. but then the snow gets cranking as we head into saturday. the base is now at 44 inches and looking good if you will be heading there into the weekend. but the travel delays will be possible, especially once that snow starts to come down. we're looking at an additional 12 inches of snow at kirkwood then some lesser amounts as you head down the sierra. and our clouds are starting to increase well with this next storm system. that will be approaching heading into tomorrow. now, we might start out with light, scattered showers for the north bay today. the rest of us partly cloudy. then the rain moves in from north to south. starting in the north bay tomorrow evening and then look at the time frame. 5:00 or 8:00 on friday and we have those showers and possibly some gusty winds rolling through. moving into the south bay, by early saturday morning and then let's take a break for saturday

afternoon before the next round moves in. it will be active and the possibility of anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 of rain with several systems rolling on through between now and next tuesday. and, today, a great day to head out to san francisco. the ice rink, i'll be there at union square for the mid-day show at 11:00. 51 degrees and highs today in the mid-50s. great weather, not only there, but as we go into the weekend, it will be off and on with those showers. you may be able to fit in some of those activities in between the rain, but, put those showers in your weekend plans. let's see what's happening with the morning commute now with mike. >> ari, get you out there on the ice skating rink with one of those go pros. i bragged about this camera. a little build. gradual on this thursday. we'll look to the maps and you don't see much problem and not a lot of slowing. we have a bit of debris reported in a couple of spots and not really affecting the flow of

francisco-- is moving on. ==vo== city leaders say nike ser. 6:24. an event that draws thousands of runners to san francisco is moving on. city lead say nike will not host next year's woman's half marathon. somebody told the recreational parks department it's looking for a new location. the very popular event. in fact, so many people wanted to register last year, there had to be a lottery. long-time participants say the decision is disappointing. >> i feel really bad because this is something i enjoy doing and it really gave me an opportunity to run. >> so, nike is running off with thousands of dollars in fees. it usually pays the city to put on the event. many hotels and restaurants say they'll also lose out on business no word yet where that half marathon will take place next year. well, out of compton and the next step for one hip-hop group.

90-year-old adopted mother. police looking for alicia osibin. she became a suspect two weeks ago when her mother's body was found hidden in the house that they shared. police are trying to uncover any kind of motive. people in this quiet and close-knit neighborhood are stunned. >> no reason to suspect anything. we had heard that lisa went to arizona to take a job there. we knew her mother was elderly. we assumed that her mother went with her. >> police say osibin is 5'8" and heavyset. she could be armed and dangerous. 6:33. the next step in a criminal of discovering a bay boy. a preliminary hearing is scheduled for william shultz. in april the teenager stabbed jordan algrim to death. he later confessed during a jailhouse interview.

in september the judge ruled him competent to stand trial. all new this morning a search following a robbery at a mill valley bank. one suspect made off with the bank bag after hitting the victim in the head. this was outside the u.s. bank near caminoa alto. the suspect took off in a white toyo toyo toyota corolla. these people recently robbed a ulta supply store in couupertin. if you know who they are, give the sheriff department a call. >> that's correct. fans are expected to start lining up outside the imax here but you guys want a sneak peek of the film? there it is. unfortunately, i cannot tell you what the story is. nine miles of 70 millimeter imax film. this is the only imax on the west coast showing it in the 70 millimeter. i've seen three positive reviews online and one negative and the theater manager we heard from she watched it by herself with some colleagues here in the theater. she's a die-hard fan and was gushing about the film. so, be really curious to see what other fans are thinking and, of course, they're not going to be able to see it here until 7:00. today being a preview day. now, this is the scene moments a ago. 1:00 this morning they had a sold-out thon show. one of the fewest locations in

the country doing it. but they're showing all the six previous films. i should have asked if they're showing them in chronological order and episodes one through six or in the release order. a great opportunity for a lot of young people who were too young in '77 and early '80s to see the original films on the big screen. >> it's cool. you know, it's really unique. cool being around people who know what the movie is about and what the culture is about and laughing at all the funny parts. they get just the uniqueness of the movies. >> it's prettytric. everyone is a die-hard fan. everyone is excited for the new one. >> now, today, thursday is the preview day. the film technic doesn't open until tomorrow. the thought is that today's film

bay. southbound 101 as the sun comes in and both indicated on our live camera. the map will show you not a lot more slowing than we typically see at that shot. a nice, smooth flow towards capital expressway and 85 shows the build with 280 and that's what we typically see this time in december, especially the week before christmas. a lighter flow and expect it to lighten up more tomorrow. over here we're looking at pleasanton as well as hayward. again, a typical pattern through the area and the bay bridge metering lights are on and quick look at oakland shows you the volume. no concern for the nimitz freeway. south towards the san mateo bridge is getting to be a popular place. major developments out of san bernardino this morning as prosecutors prepare to charge a friend of one of the mass shooters. we are one day after that big fed rate hike. what does wall street think of it? we'll take a look coming up in "business and tech." just into our newsroom:

in san bernardino and talk with some of the victims' families affected by the shooting. the fbi is still investigating and they're alsoing at the larger picture of how is isis getting things done so to speak. the fbi director james come speaking to a police group conference in new york says that they're essentially crowd sourcing terror on social media. if you are familiar with that concept, that they're inspiring other people to do these smaller acts as opposed to what we typically had been working towards and preparing for. larger groups like al qaeda did larger attacks like 9/11. that's not really their focus any more. they're talk about how they're shifting theirics to deal with how terrorists are now trying to attack america. and the president will get a first-hand look at that when he heads over to the counterterrorism center today. >> good to know. very much, tracie potts.

the feds. the worst may ahead for hedge fund manager martin shkreli. he has been arrested in his manhattan home by the fbi on accusations he funneled money. you know shkreli who bought pharmaceuticals and raised the price of a pill by hundreds of dollars. well, normally, the law says you can't fire somebody for being too old but target is saying good-bye to its chief play officer telling him it is time for some younger blood. 1 13-year-old alex thorn has been the official play tester for three years. cnbc says he tests between 30 and 50 toys a month but he is being shown the door. he still does some voices on nickelodeon's "paw patrol." he's not out on the streets. he has a job. but, 13, you have to move on. >> you can't relate to the 3 and

south bay 38 degrees. i know, it's. let's drop in on the north bay. not as cold as yesterday morning. we had widespread freezing temperatures and just slightly above. we're making some improvements there. as we go hour by hour in livermore we start out at 36 degrees by sunrise and then some clouds to mix in with that sun at 3:00. we're at 58 degrees. reaching the upper 50s before dropping down into the lower 40s tonight. early in the morning, mostly clear skies and 43 degrees. but our clouds will be increasing today ahead of this storm system that will be bringing us some rain heading into the weekend. high pressure that kept it dry and cool all now sliding off to the east. and we're watching for the possibility of some spotty light showers in the north bay today. so, keep the umbrella handy there. it doesn't look like it moves anywhere south of san francisco. and then early in the morning tomorrow, the line of rain starts to move in from north to south. now, look at the timeline. by friday afternoon, it looks like we could start to see some heavy rain moving into the north

bay. and then in san francisco right around dinnertime and heading out for some evening activities and then the south bay we'll see that late friday night still lingering into saturday morning. but, once again, much-needed good soaker and we'll start to see several systems moving in between tomorrow and on tuesday. and off and on rain will have the potential to bring us anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 for most of the bay area. today, a great day to head out to the ice rink. why? because the weather will be nice and i'll be there. i'll be doing the mid-day show at 11:00 it will be 51 degrees in san francisco and the sun peeking every now and then and highs reaching into the mid-50s. a look at the weekend forecast whether you're going ice skating, holiday shopping or putting up some decorations, it will be rainy off and on. so, you may be able to get in some of those activities and between the showers, especially saturday morning into saturday afternoon. and then we'll have another round of rain moving in by

sunday afternoon with highs reaching into the mid to upper 50s. umbrellas needed this weekend, but not so much this morning, mike. how is it looking for the commute? >> good. i'm glad you'll have your ice skates on. over here we're looking over towards the bay bridge. that is good. a smooth, easy drive. look at that across the span. now, folks held up at the toll plaza as we look at your map. not a surprise, not that bad either. east shore freeway moves well from pablo down to the berkeley curve. as i move out of your way. bering and bay point and little slowing towards concord. that's an easy drive right now. slower start for petaluma down south towards the scene of a big rig. one lane blocked and that is why more slowing south of that city. the rest of our north bay moves very well. the south bay, not bad but we still continue to have that build through san jose building for 280 now the most recent slowing and palo alto. for 101 the northbound side with these headlights a lot more cars show up over the last five

find a fire in the garage and flames shooting out of the roof of that house. it eventually caused a nearby transformer to blow. the power is now out for many of the homes on that block. the cause of the fire still under investigation. developing right now. a gruesome discovery in the heart of san francisco. human remains were found inside a planter box in front of homes near alamo square. >> kris sanchez joining us now. kris, it could take weeks and even months, possibly, to identify whose remains they are. >> a bone that was buried in a street side planter and while police say the investigation one like this one time is of the essence. they are not saying yet how long that bone might have been there. those bones were discovered a few days before thanksgiving and identifying them could take weeks, perhaps months. a neighbor shared thisio of detectives sifting through the planter in the surrounding area where those remains were found. the planter was on the sidewalk between an apartment building and the street, but investigators also sifted through planter attached to the

they say he refused to drop his and failed to respond to pepper spray and bean bag rounds. woods-funeral at 11:00 this morning is expected to draw a large crowd. in east pal alto this morning. classes canceled for the rest of the week at costano elementary school. the reason the school was forced to turn off the gas heater earlier this week because of a leak. crews will need the next few weeks to fix it. classes are expected to resume following the winter break. horse now of a different kind. happening right now, the force in full effect.
