all day yesterday like where is that rain and then i looked at the radar and it stopped halfway across the peninsula and across parts of the east bay. not a drop of rain all day yesterday and just started up overnight. now, we are seeing spotty, light rain that continues and we'll see it all throughout the day. some rain off and on and it looks like we'll get few breaks as we go into the afternoon. we're now seeing that rain falling across san francisco and over towards oakland and up towards concord and fairfield. a wet commute as you head out this morning and more of the same, once again, expected as we go through the day with highs reaching into the mid to upper 50s. we'll see more of this weather as we head into the holiday. i'll detail that coming up, but let's see how that impacts your commute now with mike. >> good morning, kari. light traffic flow. obviously, still early in the morning and wet roadways, as well. that's what we're seeing over by the calleem and light, indeed for the coliseum area. right around market street,

reports of a solo car facing the wrong way. that is usually single car spun out in the wet roadways. a second one just reported seconds ago. doesn't sound like that is affecting the roadways and the rest of your bay moves smoothly on the peninsula and on the east bay. we'll talk about the north bay coming up, back to you. what started out as a trip to begin the holiday soon turned tragic for a south bay family. this morning we're learning more about the gilroy family when their plane crashed. took off from reidville airport saturday afternoon when their trip took a turn for the worse. their plane disappeared from the radar. >> chuck coppola is tracking the latest on the investigation and, chuck, we're also hearing from the family. >> that's right. good morning, kira and sam. enough time for the pilot to send three may day concerns.

the pilot was thomas jason price of gilroy and he was flying his family to a holiday party near las vegas. it included his wife and 14-year-old daughter and son, john. they recovered five bodies from the wreckage about ten mooi miles south of bakersfield. >> the debris field that was approximately one quarter mile of length just north to south and we do our best assessing the investigation and assist in finding what the cause was so that tragedy doesn't occur, again. >> there was rain in the area when the faa says the plane lost radar contact at about 4:00 p.m. investigators from the national transportation safety board are on the scene. the aircraft, a single engine piper was built in 1978 and certified for flight through april of 2017. >> chuck, thanks.

a horrifying scene last night in las vegas after authorities say a driver intentionally crashed her car into a crowd of people killing one and injuring dozens. a woman veered on to the sidewalk sending people flying. she then backed on to the street and drove back on to the sidewalk, again, before taking off. police caught up to her a few blocks later. witnesses could not believe what they were seeing. >> suddenly saw people fly in the air. but because the car hit them and it was like a bowling ball, it didn't spin. >> again, one person died and 37 more were hurt. six of them critically. the story gets worse. the driver had a 3-year-old in the car with her. that child was not hurt. while it was intentional, so far they're not calling it an act of terrorism. 4:34. a mysterious death over the weekend inside a cal fraternity

house. somebody called early saturday morning to report a 22-year-old young man unresponsive inside of the house on channing way and berkeley. friday was the last day of the school semester. police don't know if fraternity members were having a party but they say lots of students already left campus for winter break. the man who was found dead is not suspicious. well, it's 4:35 right now. a little rainy on my drive in this morning. let's check in with kari hall to see what you can expect as you head out this morning. >> a day for windshield wipers and hood and boots and long sleeves and all of that to get ready for that cool and wet weather we'll see all day today. scattered light showers still rolling across and a closer look at the south bay. still some mist coming down and some heavier rain from the parts of the north bay over towards san francisco and also parts of

the east bay. and as we go into the afternoon, we will still see this rain and maybe a dose of the heavier stuff later on this morning as that moves from north to south we will have gusty winds and additional rainfall possible all throughout the day. a look at all the microclimates and highs today reaching into the upper 50s. no big difference from the coast to the inland areas. highs in the tri-valley today reaching 59 degrees. i'll detail what to expect the rest of the week and what also looks pretty wet. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. how is it looking out there now, mike? >> earlier this morning light traffic flow and as you follow kari's reports already, we have that wet activity. all weekend and since sunday and that's what's going on in the north bay through san rafael. 101 reports flooding on the roadway and we'll watch for that and we have that spotted right here just south of that 580 interchange and in patches in the east bay and north bay. keep that in mind as you hit the

in nashua, new hampshire becse all public schools are closed in nasua, new hampshire, because of a threat. a threat aimed at two high schools. aimed at both students and staff at the schools. so as a precaution, all the public schools are closed in nashua. one of the largest districts in new hampshire. figure out the credibility of the threat. last week you'll remember threats at both new york and los angeles both turned out to be hoaxes. happening today the friend and former neighbor of one of the san bernardino shooters set to face a judge, this time for a bail and detention hearing. enrique marquez crimes of terrorism and federal weapons charges. purchased two assault rifles.

the pair killed 14 peopled, wounded another 20 in last month's attack. it's a fake. that's what investigators are now saying about a suspicious object that forced an emergency landing in kenya over the weekend. it happened mid-air aboard an air france jet traveling from the island to paris. while a passenger told the crew, he found a possible bomb in the bathroom and the pilots made an emergency landing in kenya, nearly 500 people were evacuated from the plane on emergency slides. one passenger said many of them didn't know the real reason for the evacuation until it was all over. >> we didn't know what was happening, actually. and so, we said we had to land because we had a technical problem. it actually was not a technical problem. >> authorities say the fake bomb was made out of cardboard and a timer. six passengers were being questioned by sennian authorities and we learned one has been detained because of

>> yeah. >> same story. new week, same story. lots of rain to start off your monday. >> did you watch the oakland game and then did you turn over to the raiders' game? in oakland it was just like -- and then you turn over to the niners game and it's just like -- >> totally different. >> not a drop. it's just crazy because we had so much rain for areas north of the south bay. but then we were still looking to the sky for some rain all day yesterday. well, now, it's finally here. this is what we can expect all throughout the day. a live look now as you get out on the roads. you can see that at least there. it's not too bad, but some slippery spots that you have to encounter as you go out for holiday travel or just going to work and you need the umbrellas, too. let's get a look at these temperatures. in the lower 50s and our temperatures won't rise much throughout the day. also see rain off and on and this is what the futurecast shows during the height of the morning commute. at 8:30, we've got some

widespread rain coming down. it gets heavier through the day with some downpours that may really drench us and that could also raise the concern of flooding, especially for the north bay where we've had so much rain over the past 24 hours. into tonight, still some scattered showers and into the morning, so, yes, this thing looks to stay around at least for tonight and into early tomorrow. we catch a break tomorrow afternoon. before the next round of rain moves in. and look at the futurecast and how much it is looking at for us. take a look at san jose over an inch and a half. san francisco over 0.75 and 4 inches of rain. but into the next few days. this is how it looks into christmas. some downpours through tonight and then, once again, we'll see the system moving off to the east by tomorrow afternoon and then on wednesday we see another one moving in that looks to linger into christmas eve and then maybe christmas day we'll have a break from the rain, but it will also be very chilly. and into the sierra, we're

looking at up to 28 inches of snow in twin bridges and at least a foot of snow in homewood. so a lot of snow for the sierra and a lot of rain for the bay area. and the rain will be, once again, off and on between now and at least thursday. and wrapping up by early friday. let's see how the commute is moving now with mike. >> kari, we often expect. we expect the last two weeks of the year to be very light as far as traffic goes. this will complicate things. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. water kicking up behind the cars and possibility from spinouts and we know that as we look at the map because two spinouts reported in the area and two crashes reported in the area and a car a single car involved and facing the wrong way. over here 580 at 24 and i don't want to get on anybody's insurance report. single car crashes. over here getting out of san francisco, crash eastbound 80 at seventh that is clearing off of the roadway. any problems that chp reports.

in america. this morning we're seeing the ripple effects after martin shkreli was arrested for security fraud. two labs announcing they will suspend a drug trial sponsored by his company. morgan has more on the collateral damage. >> reporter: released thursday on $5 million bond, the pharmaceutical executive dubbed by some as the most hated man in america isn't staying quiet. >> i'm not one for a lack of comment. >> reporter: martin shkeli live streaming for hours at a time after pleading not guilty to securities fraud. just yesterday tweeting, i am confident i will prevail. the allegations against me are baseless and without merit. while shkreli remains comfort inside his apartment, the conflict over his alleged scheme keeps growing. two labs funded by his company for a leukemia drug. in a statement moffett cancer center saying it's stopping this

clinical trial indefinitely. sending the investigation of the outcome of shkreli. returning a $15,000 check he personally sent them in january saying the more we learned where this money may have come from, the more important it is to give it back. he made headlines for hiking up a cancer drug 5,000%. >> doctors and patient dprups saying they can't access this drug. are you going to change the price? >> no. >> reporter: now accused of orchestrating a ponzi scheme. if convicted, he faces 20 years. today a repfor shkreli says his twitter account was hagged. anyone want free money? willing to donate hundreds of thousands to charities before i go to prison. shkreli resigned from his company and is expected back in court in january. at 4:51 now. now to what could be considered the biggest slip up of the

entire year. comedian steve harvey miscrowned miss universe. >> colombia. >> the host made that major mistake when he misread the card. it clearly started that miss philippines won and to make matters worse, harvey sent out a tweet apologizing to each contestant but he misspelled both. as you can imagine, social media quickly l lly on this one. get more viewers and get more attention on this event. if that's the case -- >> mission accomplished. >> at one person's terrible heartbreak. that's just not right.

welcome back, 4:55 right now. we are seeing a little rain in parts of the bay area this morning. but will it affect your drive to work? your last-minute christmas shopping? meteorologist kari hall is here to tell us. >> all of that because you need the umbrella in the back seat and also the rain gear on. something warm, too. it's pretty chilly. as we go into the day. more of this rain off and on. we can see the splotches of light green all across the radar and there will be times that it does take a break. as we go into the day, looking at highs into upper 50s

all across the board here and low temperatures dropping into the mid up toer 50s. let's see what's happening now on the roads with mike. >> kari, that rain happening since yesterday. you will be talking about that. affect your car's grip on the roadway. ease up on the brakes and that is a tough situation. one clear close by. this is on our maps and talking about 580 over towards highway 24 and the connector is just closed to 24. i say possibly because chp says they're going to do it if they couldn't clear the vehicles and i do see that slowing showing up there. the rest of your bay moves smoothly, but look at that glow. moisture and drizzle around the san mateo bridge. someone is out there and no doubt fueling up their tanks. gas prices around the country are itching lower. getting to that $2 per gallon mark. over the last two weeks the cost of the national gallon of gas is down about a nickel. that's the national story as you see on your screen there.

very different in the bay area for local drivers. aaa reporting that the per gallon average is slightly lower over the last month but still slightly up over the past week. the net effect here, the lowest averages in oakland, $2.55 or about 50 cents more than the national average. with san francisco running about 10 cents per gallon higher. the desperate search for dozens of people after a landslide in china. up to 20 feet of mood covered 20 buildings. at least 91 people are reported missing. heavy rains in the region saturated the soil making it increasingly unstable and ultimately causing it to collapse. coming up next, questions, kira, still surrounding a deadly plane crash after a south bay family's single engine plane goes off the radar. what we do know this morning is the name of that family and
