as we take a look at what is happening in the sierra, one last batch of snow moving through there, and we may have sleet or graupel or a wintry mix in some of the higher elevations. now joining us is bob, who is in the santa cruz mountains, and keeping an eye on what could be falling from the sky. >> merry christmas to you. we are here off of highway 17, an elevation of roughly 2,000 feet, and those light rainbands are heading into our area, and as those come in there's the possibility because we are so high up, and i don't know if you can see my breath, because the temperature is so low, we could see a light dusting of snow. not something that is going to cause problems driving for

people driving to and from the summit, but a nice picture for christmas morning. here's a picture of where we had snow in the bay area, and you are looking at the top of mt. hammel, the home of the lake observatory. further north in petaluma, pea-sized hail during the rain showers up there, and then outside of sacramento, you are looking in el dorado county, a tornado, and this was around 4:00 yesterday afternoon, and it did cause damage, tore off roofs, uprooted trees and knocked down fences. fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries. and keri has been mentioning, there's a freeze warning expected to go into affect later today here in the bay area, and mostly the valley areas, not san francisco, but some of the valley areas a. freeze warning

ignited when she was cooking christmas eve dinner. when crews got to the duplex, flames and smoke were pouring out of the window. a woman grabbed a pan and oil caught fire burning her face. she was taken to the hospital, and nobody else was hurt. the man accused of threatening to kill muslims in richmond is out to bail this morning and his release is sparking concerns among many in that city. william selly allegedly shouted death threats at muslims praying at the islamic center earlier this month and then police found allegedly a pipe bomb at his home. muslims and nonmuslims gathered yesterday to stand in solidarity. >> we have children, and we have families and we come here and

this is a safe place and we have been in the community for a long time, and this is concerning. >> we came from the world, this is international -- this belong to everyone who lives here. >> the suspect pleaded not guilty, and he is due back in court. and the police are running extra patrols near the islamic center and in his neighborhood. pg & e crews were able to restore power about 8:30 after a garbage truck pulled down power lines. the truck's bin is stuck in the air. this happened about 3:00 yesterday afternoon around story road and feller avenue in san jose. it left about 800 homes in the dark. it mainly affected homes in the allen rock neighborhood. >> i thought this telephone pole was going to fall down.

gathered to call on the mayor... to fire the li in san francisco, protesters gathered to call on the mayor to fire the police chief. dozens of people filled city hall in san francisco yesterday. they want mayor lee to take action over the handling of the mario woods killing. so far no response from mayor lee. woods was shot 14 times by police officers earlier this month. woods was a stabbing suspect. police say they only opened fire after he moved towards an officer with a knife in his

hands. the chief said the officers were threatened and woods' family disagrees and filed a lawsuit and there are at least three active investigations into the shooting. if you receive a drone this morning, remember you have to register it with the faa and pay attention to where you can and cannot fly it. park rangers with the park district say their open spaces are a no-fly zone. and park officialed say drones are a danger to planes and disrupt wildlife. they are already banned in many park districts and if you are caught operating your drone, you could be on the hook for $300. >> whatever you have to your christmas wish list beware many of the hottest gifts could be susceptible to hackers. cyber criminals could be following santa down the chimney

this season. the most hackable gifts were the trackers. many wearables use bluetooth to sync with apps. >> they can be aware of everything else on that device. >> smartphones and tablets are also susceptible. >> often times cyber criminals can impersonate a bluetooth device or a connection to gain access to all the information you might have. >> be sure to turn off bluetooth when you are not using it, and protect your home network. drones and camera-enabled devices are another device for hackers. >> make sure you keep all the information that came with the product. >> it can be easy to overlook kids' toys when it comes to cyber security but many modern

if you have to head out to work this morning, i see a lot of you out there on the roads, and we are seeing very chilly temperatures. mostly clear skies now, a full moon on the christmas morning and it will be the last time you see a full moon on christmas morning in quite a while. one last round of light rain just to the north of us, and the snow is also winding up in the sierras. if you are planning to go there later today or weekend, we will see the weather systems quieting down and cold air settling in. we have been tracking the rain moving in from the north end and that could bring a slight chance of a wintry mix especially for the north bay and some of the spots where temperatures are coldest and we may have flakes flying in the hilltops and most of us won't see that, and it won't be anything that should affect your travel as you go out and about, and it's 32 degrees in the east bay now, so some of us are below freezing and with

some puddles and wet spots still left on the roads, that may make things slippery. downtown san jose, now at 32 degrees. it's 33 degrees in willow glen. san francisco, 46. very cold air and a breezy wind still this morning coming in from the north west, about 15 to 20 miles per hour, and a little stronger along the coast and in through the day, winds calm down and by tonight a mostly calm wind and clear skies and that will allow temperatures to fall quickly into the freezing territory as we go into tonight. the future cast shows we will see rain especially along the coast. inland areas and in parts of the east bay, we will see much of the rain and moves into san jose with a quick round of light showers shortly before the morning commute if you have to work today, and then as we go into this afternoon, it clears out as we dry out. once again, the temperatures will be falling and will stay with us into the weekend. today's high expected in the

lower 50s. pacifica, 52 degrees. oakland, 56. livermore, a high of 50 degrees today. this weekend we'll see more of the same with low 50s all across the bay area, and after christmas sales, you need to bundle up, but we will have mostly sunny skies head into tomorrow. sunday, we will have a chance of rain for the north bay in san francisco, mainly in the afternoon to evening hours and then the rest of the bay area could see rain once again as we start out the new workweek, people heading back to work or traveling back home after visiting family. we will have some freezing temperatures, and i will detail that coming up a little later. if you are looking for some post christmas entertainment, there are a slew of new films coming out this weekend. >> so many good options, and it's hard to whittle it down. there's a little something for everyone. >> i'm taking this woman. i want $10,000.

enjoy that. 6:22 right now. a present unrelated to christmas but lighting up the day for some folks, and turns out they were over charged for years on property taxes. one woman uncovered this mistake and got back thousands of dollars. >> talk about a gift that will keep on giving for sometime. a huge check written to a south bay woman because of a mistake made by the county tax assessors office. this is what it looks like when the tax man pays you. >> $27,836.14. >> thank you. >> you bet. >> santa came to the front door for this family. >> god is good. >> erin and several of her gilroy neighbors recently found out they were over charged on their property taxes and erin was over charged for 13 years, some of them tough years.

we will have a chance of winding down before noon. here's why we are watching out for the possibility of rain and maybe a little bit of snow in the hilltops. we have one last wave of rain moving in from the north and as you head over towards the sierra, the snow still coming down there, but will be winding down in the santa cruz mountains, dry and mostly clear skies and we will have a chance, once again the hilltops will be cold enough to see snowflakes as we go through the morning. a look at what is happening there now, probably bought back some of the cold air from the north pole. >> reporter: we're not at the zero degree mark like earlier this week, and we are getting close to the freezing mark. we are certainly in the 30s, not at 32 yet but if the temperatures to drop here on the summit along i-17 at around

2,000 feet, we could see a light dusting of know as the rainbands start to move in from the north and south into the area. again, it's a possibility of it being a nice sign for this christmas. there was snow in the bay area, and there still is snow in the bay area, and you are looking at video from yesterday, and atop mt. hamilton getting a nice dusting up there, and not unusual if the conditions are right. up further north in pet petaluma, pea-sized hail. and then el dorado county, around 4:00 yesterday afternoon, people saw this twister from the el dorado hills to folsom lake, and did leave behind damage, knocked off roofs and uprooted

no word yet when the road will re-open. we have new details in the death of a fairfield toddler. the boy's father spoke exclusively with nbc bay area. he says his son suffered a fractured skull after being shaken and dropped at the hands at the babysitter. thompson died last week while in bailey's care on the travis air force base. the family believed the babysitter was innocent until police say she confessed to them. >> she had had a hard day, and she just grabbed him and just started shaking him uncontrollably and said that he slipped out of her hands and fell to the floor. i know no punishment is going to be -- will bring my son back, but she doesn't deserve to be able to come back and do this to anybody else's kid.

>> earlier this week, the babysitter told our sister station kcra in sacramento in a jailhouse interview that she is innocent and said she never touched the toddler. panic in north carolina when gunfire rings out inside a charlotte mall and we brought this as breaking news during the 11:00 newscast yesterday. what happened was gunfire rang out and people started running for cover. one woman we spoke with briefly lost both of her daughters and listen to her sound bite, she was terrified. >> suddenly shots were fired and people went running and they ran through the store, and they actually rushed right through the twins and grabbed the twins and were gone. >> luckily police were able to find that woman's children. they were safe, and besides that suspect who was killed, police say nobody else was injured in that shooting. >> 6:34 on your christmas

morning. all new this morning, a livermore woman suffered burns to her face while flames ignited when she was cooking her christmas eve dinner. firefighters say two people were making dinner when they noticed oil in a pan was smoking. when the woman grabbed the pan the oil overflowed and caught fire burning her on her face. she was taken to the hospital and nobody else was injured. >> a follow-up in the east bay also now, going to take a few more months to fix the damage caused by a sinkhole in union city. the work starts next week, and part of the road collapsed in october creating this sinkhole. crews will soon work on a lar largelarge

excavation site. a lot of peoples' hopes for christmas eve sunk when a power outage shut down christmas eve celebrations because they had no power. it happened about 3:00 in the afternoon, and more than 800 homes left in the dark. >> the power lines were flashing, and i thought this telephone pole was going to fall down, and it started to flash over here in front of my house here, and, yeah, it was pretty scary. >> this mainly affected people that live in the allen rock neighborhood of san jose. now to the south and midwest where this morning people are picking up the pieces of what is left after severe storms and more than 20 tornados swept through states from michigans to the gulf coast. 14 people were killed. in arkansas, this 18-year-old died after a tree fell into a

house. she was shielding her baby sister who survived. powerful winds flipped this big rig, and some people lost everything. >> every house just about around us is gone. this is -- it's still standing, but it's not going to make it. >> one of the tornados believed to be a ef-3 travelled more than 100 miles as this severe weather moves on, the concern now flash flooding across parts of the southeast and mid-atlantic. fedex is blaming bad weather and last-minute orders from procrastinators, because some packages didn't make it to their destinations in time for christmas and as a result fedex will make delivers today. if you don't want to wait for your package to arrive, fedex will have express officers open where customers can go pick up shipments themselves. >> if you didn't make the last-minute rush for christmas gifts last night you will have

to make the presents yourself, because most stores are officially closed for the holiday. one of the last chains to stay open for christmas eve was target. but the cold and the rain kept a lot of folks away, and that meant procrastinators that did make it out got a nice christmas surprise. >> i did not expect to see not a lot of clouds and found parking easily, and given that, i might shop more easily on christmas eve. >> day after christmas sales start tomorrow and that's when you get the best deals. some stores are opening as early as 6:00 in the morning. >> did you find the store was empty when you went in ten minutes before closing? >> you can put much thought into

that. >> we will start to see the rain moving in as we go into the morning now. temperatures are cold enough for there to be light snowflakes flying in the hill tops and don't expect it to reach the valley floor, but look at some of the freezing temperatures, 32 degrees in doubling, and in the castro valley, 34 degrees. in the peninsula, upper 30s. very cold as you head out there, and maybe just want to stay in and unwrap the presents and watch tv all day. we will have sunshine this afternoon, and it will feel better reaching into the mid-50s, but as we head into tonight, a freeze warning will be issued for most of the bay area, and this does not include san francisco and mostly the areas shaded in purple where we will have lows dipping into the upper 20s and lower 30s. i will detail that and we will take a look ahead at the weekend and what to expect with the next round of rain moving in and that's coming up in less than ten minutes. hopefully most of your friends and family settled right

quiet now, of course, and as many people head out today or if you are staying at home, a cool start and then feeling better today. we have one last round of rain that will be moving in as we go into the next couple of hours, starting out in the north bay and then moving to the south. with this batch of rain and very chilly temperatures, there will be the chance we could have snowflakes flying in the hilltops, and then on the valley floors, we are looking at some slight spotty showers. look at the temperatures below freezing in the north bay. it's 29 degrees, and hills burg, 30 degrees, and with freezing temperatures and a lot of water still left on the ground from the rain we had earlier, there could be slick spots, especially on the bridges and overpasses, so keep that in mind if you are driving. winds are light and a nice breeze starting off the day and that will continue to move in from the north about 15 to 20 miles per hour, and tonight as

the winds calm down, we have clear skies and freezing conditions as our temperatures drop quickly after sunset. we do still have that chance of rain in the future cast. here we are at 7:45 in the morning, and mainly hugging the coast and moving further south, and this is when we could see a quick burst of wintry mix in the santa cruz mountains. we see that happening further to the south with snow in the san lou shaw mountains. we will get sunshine head into the afternoon. let's take it hour by hour in san francisco. upper 40s to start and temperatures will be slow to rise because it will be a cool day, and mostly sunny skies behind that storm system that moved in yesterday. a look at the holiday weekend as you get out and about, maybe catching some of the after christmas sales. it will be in the low 50s. 55 degrees on sunday, but we will have a chance of rain during the afternoon in the north bay as well as san francisco, the rest of the bay

will re-open. there could be ice out there on the roads this morning because temperatures in some areas are dipping below freezing. >> or very close. and we could also see rain and maybe even snow on christmas, and there's a phrase for that, i think, and our very own bob redell is on snow patrol in the mountains. a chance we could see flakes there? >> reporter: merry christmas to you, and we have been out here waiting and the possibility is here, because up on highway 17 of the santa cruz mountains around 2,000 feet, and we are getting close to freezing and with the light rains expected to come in, you could see a light dusting of snow. we do have snow in the bay area, just not here. you have to go a couple thousand feet higher, and there is the elevation of around 4,200 feet at the lake observatorobservato.

not unusual when the conditions are right, that's usually when you will find it here in the bay area. in petaluma yesterday we saw pea-sized hail coming down when the temperatures dropped during the rain, and here was something else, very unusual to see in california, and we're talking about a twister or tornado. this was in the central valley in the el dorado county area, and people saw this around 4:00 yesterday afternoon, from el dorado hills to folsom lake, and it caused damage, and fortunately nobody was hurt. again, a very unusual tornado to strike in northern california. reporting live here on the summit and highway 17, bob redell, "today in the bay." merry christmas right back at you, bob. happening for the first time in nearly 40 years, there's a full moon on christmas day. that's a live look in san francisco. a beautiful look, clear skies.
