didn't know i'd have to deice my windshield and couldn't find my ice scraper. >> that's right. you may be getting some of those after christmas sales and if you dress in layers, you need the hat and gloves and scarf and don't forget to warm up the car, kira. take care of people, pets, plants and exposed pipes. they may be susceptible to freezing as we dip down to 31 degrees in the tri-valley. in the north bay, it's 33 degrees. highs in the low mid-50s. a lot of sunshine and breezy wind. i'll show you what else to expect as another round of rain moves in tomorrow. that's coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> looks good. we'll stay tuned. kari, thanks. a person is dead after charging at police with a knife.

palo alto p.d. got a call about someone wanting to hurt someone else. when they arrived at the home, they say that the person charged at them with a knife. shots were then fired. the person was taken to the hospital and later died. no officers were hurt. this happened around 9:30 on webster street and forest avenue near downtown palo alto near university avenue. now to another officer-involved shooting in the east bay where police discovered a dead body. b.a.r.t. police in hayward say a u-haul driver was acting suspicious yesterday morning. when they tried to question him, he pulled a gun out and shot at them and tried to run away. the other officer fired back. >> i've seen one here and in the shoulder and one right here. >> and he was still trying to get up? >> he was just trying to get up. >> we have video. i watched the video multiple

times. and it was unfortunate but it happened and i'm confident in how my officers performed. >> well, after that shooting, police found a man's dead body in that u-haul. the suspect who shot at officers is being identified as 27-year-old charles getty. he's recovering in the hospital this morning. the officer who was shot by him was released from the hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. happening now, a brush fire has forced the closure of parts of highway 101 and the pacific coast highway in southern california. the 1,000 acre fire is being fanned by gusty winds that ignited last night in ventura county near solimar beach. the chp shut down that stretch of 101 as 100 firefighters battled the blaze. more news will be available at a 10:00 a.m. news conference.

an uber passenger is dead after their car was hit by a wrong-way driver. police say a toyota was on the wrong side of highway 1 near pacifica when it crashed into the uber. the wrong-way driver died and the uber passenger, identified as jason gillbride of pacifica was killed. uber issued a statement. "we are deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy. this christmas day, our thoughts and prayers are with the families." investigators say a grinch broke into a car in a garage in hillsborough and stole various items, including keys to the homeowner's business up in san francisco. this happened yesterday morning while the victims were asleep. at 3:00 a.m., the thief went to

the san francisco business. you can see there on the surveillance video. it's an optometrist office. the security guard asked him what he was doing. he claimed he was the nephew of the optometrist. >> he feels violated that somebody was in his house and went through his things. >> police are collecting evidence and have posted the thief's picture on facebook and twitter. if you have any information, you're asked to contact them. . a christmas day tornado hit around 5:00 yesterday meaning and at least three homes were completely destroyed. one person was hurt. it's a devastating weekend where storms and more than 20 tornadoes ripped through the region killing 14 people. and the tornado that touched down east of sacramento on thursday is still the talk of the town.

it hit parts of el dorado near folsom lake. it even uprooted some trees even. >> there were roof shingles 2 or 300 feet in the air spinning around and when i saw it up in the air, i couldn't believe how big of debris was in the air that high up. >> the tornado traveled about eight miles. no one was hurt. a second tornado touched down causing minor damage. one san francisco neighborhood spent eight hours without water on christmas day. that's because a 100-year-old water main pipe broke yesterday morning around 11:00. it flooded several garages in the area of green and steiner streets. crews spent all day repairing the pipe and water was restored around 7:00 last night. the marin county-born journalist was allowed to spend time with his family for christmas day.

39-year-old jason rezaian was convicted of espionage last year. he's serving an unspecified prison sentence. his wife and his mother were allowed to visit him. rezaian is a correspondent for "the washington post." he was working for the paper in tehran at the time of his arrest. the paper continues to fight for his release. at 7:07, we have much more coming up. the warriors took care of the cavaliers on christmas day. the game is a lot more than just a win for a group of bay area kids. plus -- >> the tree went up in like less than a minute. a family loses everything after their christmas tree catches fire and they narrowly make it out alive.

it's a very cold morning. freeze warning throughout the bay. we hope you bundle up and stay warm. antioch family lost their belongs after their christmas tree went up in flames. the family talks about what is next. >> this is where it started. this is the limp. >> reporter: just three days before christmas, she heard crackling. the family's christmas tree somehow caught fire. >> the tree went up in like less than a minute. >> reporter: the living room engulfed, samantha's husband had to jump out of a back window and three of their kids ran outside. >> and i remember counting, one, two, three and i'm like, where is logan? >> 4-year-old logan was asleep on the couch, just feet from the flaming fir tree.

>> it would be a completely different story. >> samantha rescued their 10 week old foster puppy, cringle. >> it was just too much. so i wanted to help her get some normalcy. >> reporter: the structure still stands but firefighters say things inside are a total loss because of asbestos. even so, samantha is more thankful than ever. >> everybody is okay. we're all together. we're all together in a small hotel room but we're all together. >> reporter: reporting from antioch, nbc by area news. >> firefighters say they will resume their investigation on monday. samantha o'brien says there were l.e.d. lights on the christmas tree and she doesn't know how the fire started. we have much more ahead.

where fans who skipped christmas dinner to watch a rematch of last year's nba fi welcome back. we're looking at oracle arena. fans had a chance to watch the nba finals last night and they were not disappointed. lebron james and his cleveland cavaliers were beaten again. it was a holiday treat for all warrior fans but especially for one group of kids. "today in the bay" shows us why it was much bigger than just going to a basketball game.

>> reporter: they are the bay area gift that keeps on giving. it's like fans wearing their favorite holiday sweaters and even celebrities like drake decided to watch the golden state warriors take on lebron an the cavs. >> i came to the finals and i couldn't take him. it's as close as i will get from last year. >> reporter: and for a group of kids sitting in the front row, the game meant a lot more. >> they are no longer homeless thanks to a community service out of san francisco, which provides housing to thousands of families every year. for all of them, it's their first time watching a warriors game in person. >> they knew it was coming but didn't really know what to expect because most of them haven't had this experience before. >> reporter: not only did they get a chance to watch their favorite players -- they also

received gifts from them before the game. >> awesome. the coolest thing. it's not even funny. this is just awesome. >> reporter: a group of kids that have already overcome the odds. they have a simple christmas day message. >> keep on doing what you're doing. i want you guys to just keep with it. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. and did you get to see it? a rare christmas full moon. it's called the full cold moon because it occurs at the beginning of winter. nasa says there won't be another o 40 years. in the northern parts of sierra nevada, they now have two feet of fresh snow, thanks to recent storms. all of the snow over the past few days created whiteout conditions on i-80, briefly

closing all lanes. but the storm made dreams of a white christmas a reality. >> this is the first time in california. it's really amazing. it's really beautiful. >> the latest storm also is helping skiers at tahoe resort which have been getting steady snowfall for the past week. it's a great time to escape the bay area and go to tahoe and enjoy all of that fresh powder. but i still can't get over it's warmer on the east coast. >> yes, it is. even this morning in austin, it's 75 degrees right now. >> wow. >> and in new york city, it's about 12 degrees warmer than here than in san jose. >> wow. >> and in sierra, that's where you need to go because none of the ski resorts are seeing any. we have about 90 inches on the ground in parts of the sierra. it slowly warms up as we go through the day. here's a look at the noontime

temperatures across the bay area. san francisco is at 50 degrees. tri-valley, 40 degrees. 49 in the peninsula and the south bay. as you go through the afternoon hours, high temperatures in the low 50s in the south bay. peninsula, 54 degrees and the east bay warming up to 57 degrees. it will feel much nicer than where we are starting right now. let's drop in on the north bay. in petaluma, it's 29 degrees and in santa rosa it's 31. in san rafael, 30 degrees. so freezing temperatures in many of the low-lying areas. and today, once again, highs in the low to mid-50s. mostly sunny skies and a light wind and then we're back down to freezing later on tonight in santa rosa. a low of 31 degrees. and also in parts of the tri-valley, livermore, dipping down to 30 degrees tonight. as we go into the next couple of days, our next storm system approaches and moves in, bringing scattered showers starting tomorrow afternoon for the north bay.

and then that starts to move from north to south by 6:30 tomorrow evening. you could have some showers coming down and i know a lot of people are hitting the roads and as we go away from this christmas holiday into next week, we head back to work and we have wet weather, at least very early in the morning. the rain futurecast shows we have the possibility of about a tenth of an inch in some spots but this rain is much lighter than the storm systems we've had previously and then high pressure moves in and will block more weather systems from moving our way. drier weather as the temperatures warm up heading into next week. so this holiday weekend, we will today have highs in the low to mid-50s and then into tomorrow, low 50s in some spots, like the north bay in san francisco where the rain moves in earlier. and then we all start out the morning with some showers on monday with those highs reaching into the lower 50s. rain likely late saturday into early monday. in the meantime, we'll have dry

to spread a special joy. >> reporter: christmas just keeps getting busier and busier for alex cox and allen smith. they've delivered thousands of gifts to the kids of oakland with the hope of motorcycle clubs and church choirs. still, at the heart of something that they do is simple. love of their home town. >> merry christmas to you. merry christmas. >> reporter: like most kids their age, these kids at primary academy are happy to believe santa and his elf have traveled all the way from the north pole to hand out much appreciated presents. >> call me on the cell phone. >> this is puck kell head sandwich. and he is really just from down the block, though it did take

them a long time to get here. >> 29 years. >> wow. >> reporter: alex cox on the right is knucklehead. allen smith is chad. their friendship began in high school in oakland in the 1980s playing baseball together. >> we were the two least athletic guys on the team. and we pretty much sat at the end of the bench. >> reporter: the two have remained close serving as best men at each other's weddings east living in the east bay. in some ways, both have a less oakland in their lives rear-view mirror until one day. >> it was christmas eve seven years ago, chad and knucklehead were watching a football game on a 75-degree christmas eve day. >> reporter: the two got the wild idea to dress up, hop in the convertible and hand out candy canes and toys to kids. >> merry christmas and happy new

year! i was like, where are we going to go? and it was like this moment of, let's go to my house. >> reporter: what alex meant was his childhood house on oakland's 38th avenue. a troubled home in a rough neighborhood. it was a place of some very unhappy memories for alex. >> it was something that i just wanted to kind of forget about for a while. living here and growing up here was something that i was just a little embarrassed about. >> reporter: but that day, seven years ago, changed everything. >> it was just kind of a transformation experience. seeing the joy in the kids' faces and particularly the parents. >> reporter: knucklehead and chaz were such a hit, the two decided to return the next year and the next and every year since. each year, grander and more generous than the previous one. >> it was like, this is going to

week. not before more freezing temperatures and more rain. i'll detail all of that coming up in just a few minutes as we look ahead to the next seven days. >> kari, thanks. happening now, a brush fire has closed parts of the 101 and pacific coast highway in southern california. the 1,000 acre fire is being fanned by gusty winds. it ignited just last night in ventura county in solamar beach. it's threatening at least 30 homes. the california highway patrol shut down a stretch of pch and 101 as more than 500 firefighters battle that blaze. more information is expected at a 10:00 a.m. press conference. new this morning, a person is dead in palo alto after charging at police with a knife. the palo alto police said they got a call someone warning that they were going to hurt someone. shots were then fired and the person was taken to the hospital and later died.

>> police later found a dead body inside the u-haul while they were investigating. the suspect is 27-year-old charles getting. he's in the hospital stable and recovering this morning. an officer was treated for a gunshot wound in the shoulder and he was released from the hospital. two suspected gang members are in police custody after an undercover police bust. you're looking at juan cervantej and kevin aguilar. the two men were arrested after police found several guns, ammunition and drugs inside their san francisco home. and this is just one of the firearms investigators found. undercover police were already on the hunt for the two men because both were wanted on outstanding warrants. in other news now, the minimum wage goes up in oakland. starting january 1st, minimum wage will increase from $12.25

to $12.55 an hour. the increase applies to some 50,000 workers. and people who use sonoma county transit will be seeing fa fare changes. it will go up from 5 cents to 65 cents. student fares will apply to bus riders 18 years old or younger instead of those in grades k through 12 and senior riders will account for those over 65 years of average. the changes take effect january 17th into on christmas day, a day when a lot of people were playing new video games, a very popular video game network was hacked. the security was compromised. the broaeach meant that they cod access e-mail addresses, physical addresses, user jamnam

and other private information. it was a christmas surprise from the president. last night, troops stationed in hawaii got a holiday visit from president obama and the first lady. they thanked the service members for all they do. >> so many families here, you know, are serving tirelessly and it's not just those in uniform but also the spouses, the kids and there are times where you're missing birthdays and soccer games, making sacrifices. >> the obamas are spending their christmas vacation in hawaii. working overtime to ensure people got their packages on time, the usps employees delivered delayed letters and

packages yesterday morning. about 20 postal employees volunteered to be away from their families to come in to work and play santa. despite the holidays, the employees we spoke with didn't mind being at work. >> you volunteered to work today? >> i did. >> why? >> because i'm the real santa claus. well, i just figured that i'd put in the extra service and i guess because everyone else probably has family and stuff, too, to be with. so i figured i'd lay in the hand. >> my christmas celebration went into the evening so for that i volunteered after my family celebration. that way, people who have kids and family can celebrate all day with them. >> i'm a newbie on the list. maybe they can help me out in the future. >> by the way, the post office delivers express mail packages every single day of the year, including christmas. now to a san mateo couple using their home to raise thousands of dollars for children with cancer.

charles and connie wright turned their front yard into a winter wonderland. look at that. this massive christmas village has attracted a big following over the last five years. they collect donations from visitors and this year all proceeds are going to three families who have young children battling cancer. >> i just want to give back something. and i thought this is the easiest way to feel good and also to help people. >> whether it's cancer or anything else, you know, you can't replace anyone's life. and the thing that these kids miss out on are pretty huge. >> pretty huge what this couple is doing. are they incredible or are they incredible? so far, they have raised more than $5200. good christmas news there. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay."

it's 64 in little rock, a. saw. if you have family in town, they can see what it is like where they are from. we have not reached the high temperature in new york city. looking at some of the microclimates and where we are starting, it's below freezing in the tri-valley. in the east bay, very cold temperatures san francisco starts out at day at 47 degrees and highs this afternoon top out in the low to mid-50s with a breezy wind. it will be 54 in san francisco. also in the peninsula and south bay at 53 degrees. get a closer look at where we have the coldest air and in parts of the east bay we start out below freezing in lafayette, it's 27 degrees. the freeze warning continues for another hour and 15 minute theans temperatures are above freezing. in san francisco, this is how you plan out your day. a lot of sunshine and i have to

bundle up and even during the evening, we do not warm up much. highs in the low 50s. next storm system approaches tomorrow. so we have to plan for showers in the afternoon. rain moves into the north bay and in san francisco as we go into the evening. east bay also sees that rain and it gets started early on monday morning with scattered showers still lingering before it clears out and then we get a chance to dry out. the next round of rain doesn't look as heavy as the previous systems we've had. and high pressure blocks the bay area from getting wet weather. how are we doing here with the rainfall? in santa rosa, we've had about 8.5 inches of rain.

san francisco, 6.5. and the percentage of the average has been below average. especially for oakland. only getting about half of what you should have to this date. in livermore, we are right on target. we are about normal for the start of the rainfall in christmas and then in san jose, above average amounts of rain there. looking at the sierra where they wake up to a fresh new powder today and we've also had above average amounts of the snowpack in the sierra. so we've had, in some spots, up to 90-inch snowpack and we are above average freezing temperatures during the morning and then highs in the low r50s. we're tracking rain moving in late sunday night and into early monday morning. highs in the 50s but it's much warmer as we go into next week.

that's because it's all about concussions and the real-life doctor who made the startling discovery. >> reporter: a true story now told on the big screen about a doctor who took on the nfl. >> who are you? >> you continue to deny my work. your men continue to die. >> reporter: will smith play as medical examiner in pittsburgh who became the first to discover in football players chronic traumatic enceleptopry, a discovery getting new medical attention. >> it's impacted so many nfl players. >> i think it's over 90% of our football players.

people received drones as a gift this holiday season. but it's not just for personal use. did you know that unmanned aircraft are changing businesses and improving safety and altering the way we see our world? as tom costello reports, the pace of change is catching many by surprise. >> reporter: weeks away in vermont this fall, when the annual lift inspection came by the way of a fly-by, shooting videos of the poles and cables that will carry 150,000 skiers this year. a look at a wind farm looking for cracks in the turbines. >> the beauty of it is now we don't need to send somebody up there to just check on it. >> a big improvement in safety and the cost savings approaching 90%. nationwide, this is the year drones have gone from gimmick to
