(adlib) vicky/2shot good morning, thanks for >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well, it's time now to take a live look outside right now. your time is 7:00. thanks for joining us this sunday after the holiday. hope you had a wonderful time with your friends and loved ones. look at the beautiful sunrise. the skies are incredible in what that shot. we see a lot of those across our sunday mornings, but not one like that. i'm vicky nguyen standing by. anthony slaughter has a look at the controllld forecast. >> temperatures continue to fall. temperatures in the 20s. san jose, campbell, same for los

gatos. foster city right now at 29 degrees. same goes for the east bay. fremont at 31. tri valley, livermore, dublin, walnut creek all dealing with 20s. same for the north bay. you get the picture. it is cold this morning. you definitely want to make sure you dress in players. we also have showers there in the north bay. if you're headed there, you'll see showers, everywhere else with a mix of sun and clouds. the rain will arrive through the rest of the evening. showers will roll through the bay area. tomorrow morning, especially for that early morning ute, if you're an early riser, 4:00 or 5:00, today will be dry. >> good to know, anthony. thank you. of course, keep track of the drop in temperatures by downloading the nbc bay area app. the app is free. nine people, including two children are recovering this morning after being injured in a

tour bus crash in san francisco. the accident happened last night on the embarcadero. police say it appears an suv driver changed lanes and cut off a double-decker bus. a collision occurred. about 30 people were on the bus. >> i came outside to see, and there were a lot of police cars, a lot of ambulances. people being taken away on stretchers. >> all of the victims' injuries are considered nonlife-threatening. police are still investigating. they say the suv driver may be cited, but they do not believe alcohol was involved. now, this isn't the only tour bus crash to happen in san francisco recently. last month, 20 people were sent to the hospital after a city sightseeing bus there you saw it, careened out of control and crashed at union square. the driver said he heard a loud bang underneath the bus before losing control. investigators say they believe a mechanical failure is to blame. a report released just last week, found the company had

multiple violations and six other buses that were unsatisfactory. police say a suspect who they shot and kill said believed to be the same person who made the first 911 call. as we reported police got a call on christmas night about a person wanting to harm someone. when they arrived at the house, a man charged them with a knife. that's when officers opened fire. the man was taken to the hospital that's where he later died. officers say the man even gave them a fake name of a suspect when he called 911. >> at this point, it appears the person who called them made a false report and got the officers to arrive. and that person was potentially waiting outside the residence for officers to arrive. >> they saw it unfold near a residential home in downtown palo alto. both officers are on paid administrative leave. the man has not been identified. firefighters are gaining

control of a wayward fire along the southern california coast. the fire has burned more than 1200 acres in ventura county. crews shut down parts of highway 101. so far, the fire is about 60% contained. tourists from the netherlands were the last ones aloud through. >> i thought this was my last minute of life. i was in shock. my camera was shaking. we're from the netherlands. we don't have experience with fires. we don't know how bad it it could be. >> firefighters believe it was a downed power line that sparked this fire. about 400 firefighters are still on the scene. a developing story out of texas now at least 11 people are dead after a tornado touched down near dallas. you're looking at images. damage. one of the tornadoes hit several houses in the town of garland, trapping some people inside their homes. others lost everything. >> it was a scary sound.

we didn't know whether to leave or stay, what to do. we came out and we were shocked like, did anything happen because our house has nothing. and then one street over, it's total destruction. >> some cars were blown right off the road with people inside them. another tornado touched down in ellis county, south of dallas. yesterday's storms are the latest in a series of winter tornadoes. two even touched down here in california on thursday night, causing damage, but no injuries so far. another hit birmingham, alabama, on friday. a push for a hate crime investigation after a suspicious fire at an islamic center in tracy. it happened early saturday more than, mosque leaders think someone threw a molotov cocktail at the building. they sent us this picture of the damage. they're also calling for local authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime after two radical mosque muslims opened fire earlier this month, some believe there has been a

backlash against the muslim community. a mosque was set on fire in southern california. no one was hurt there. and santa clara county, a building was evacuated with an envelope of a suspicious powder was sent with a note. it was determined to be harmless. two east bay hospitals are closed after a kitchen burned. the sapphire started on the elephant bar restaurant in bay street in emeryville. it then spread to the roof and the furniture showroom next door. all customers made it out safely. firefighters are looking into how that kitchen fire started. >> the chp is cracking down on drunk drivers. officers arrested 130 people suspected of driving under the influence. that was just in the early stages of the crackdown. the santa clara county sheriff's

accident also doing his endrunk driving enforcement. officers arrested 68 people over a three-day stretch earlier this month. they're doing another dui checkpoint this weekend in saratoga. more bad news if you own a hover board. the christmas day catastrophe that happened right here in california. and el nino putting too much at risk. too much rain could permanently damage the aircraft carrier turned museum. and a rowers who finally reached his destination down under. we'll hear from him avenue nearly seven months at sea.

17. and i thought the last shot he was showing was beautiful, but now we've got some trees and that sky just looked mottled in orange. el nino is putting the "u.s.s. hornet" at risk. it's racing to fix its leaky deck. the water is pooling on the ship and damaging floors and walls of the museum inside. officials say the problem will only get worse as el nino brings heavy rain to the san francisco bay area. >> the flight deck has not seen any significant maintenance since 1968. but with the weather pattern, especially the el nino coming, it's time to do some major repairs. >> foundation has a temporary fix in the works. a contractor will apply a special coating to the deck that will keep the water out for a couple of years. a little history about the hornet now it served as a navy vessel during world war ii. and also recover the apollo 11

space capsule. a victory for a british man who has been rogwing solo. he made it the united states. >> to be the first person to achieve something on this scale is incredible, really. i haven't processed it, yet. >> he set off from san francisco back in june. he has rowed more than 7,400 nautical miles. he said he was supposed to have landed in australia in mid-october, but weather and sea conditions hampered his effort making his journey even more difficult at some points. >> when i sailed from san francisco, i didn't realize how difficult this is going to be. it's been right over the edge a number of times. and didn't think i could go on and had to dig deep. >> his wife and two daughters were there to welcome him once he arrived. he reportedly rowed across the atlantic ocean several years ago.

steve gruber is now suing the food network start to stop the johnny and it has seven locations. more problems for a trendy toy this holiday season. there is a new report of a hover board catching fire in northern california. it happened in ukiah. firefighters say a hover board was charging where it started sparking. luckily no damage to the hospital. consumer safety leaders say there have been 12 incidents this holiday season of hover board catching fire. earlier this month, the hover board fire almost caused a family home in brentwood to burn down. the culprit seems to be the battery inside the device which is is known to self-ignite. several stores already pulled hover boards off their shelves. an east bay family victimized by burglars called this christmas one of their

best, thanks to the fremont police department. burglars broke into their home on christmas eve and took all of the family gifts but fremont police officer rallied and found a way to buy all new gifts and they delivered them in time for christmas. can you believe that? police say it was a great way to share the real spirit of the season. love those pictures. for millions of people the day after christmas is all after hitting the stores again to cash on-n on even better deals than before the holidays. kristen dahlgren has a story that is better than black friday. >> reporter: it's beginning to look a lot like black friday. again. stores open early. >> i got everyone out there 6:00 in the morning. >> reporter: the mad scrambles. >> it was $23. >> like 10% off. >> reporter: this is the day after christmas, now becoming a shopping phenomenon of its own.

an american express study claims 66% say they expected to shop today, compared to 45% on black friday and 47% on cyber monday. for many it's about the deals. a few more gifts. or more likely a little something for themselves. >> the sales are a lot better the day after christmas than before then. >> right after christmas because there's such seasonal products, the best deals are on toys, books, movies. >> reporter: but it's also about returns. those gifts that didn't quite fit. >> they were big. >> reporter: the national retail federation expects americans will return 15% of sales. not all stores make it easy. >> i think the number one trip to getting back the full money. number one, you're returning it within ten days. >> reporter: experts also say keep it in its original

temperature spread, 20s from fairfield to 29, that's the reading in north bay at santa rosa. it's cold out there. you can see clouds increase to parts of the north bay, and showers will eventually make their arrival for san francisco and the north bay for today. it's going to stay dry. sun and clouds. it's going to be cool. mid-50s for daytime highs. 53 for the south. 54 for the peninsula. east way at 51 degrees. tri valley, sun and clouds, 55 there. san francisco, that's where the rain will be, again, for the north bay by this afternoon. i do want to show you what's happening across the country. here's the next storm system bringing rain to the pacific northwest. but the big story this holiday weekend has been this system. bringing cold amounts of rain and flooding to places like st. louis. and they're getting snow across parts of el paso. here at home, year looking for clouds to increase.

it's not going to be a very active day, considering what they're doing in the midwest. we will see showers, is this 4:00 this afternoon, right when the sun starts to go down. that's when the first showers will arrive across san francisco and the north bay. again, it's not going to be a complete washout, most of the rain will come in when the sun goes out. overnight, the showers will continue on and off until 4:00, 5:00 in the morning, tomorrow. that's when i think we'll start to dry out. rainfall amounts, not a big deal with this system. we're talking anything from less than a quarter inch at the coastline to maybe less than a tenth of an inch inland valleys and san francisco. storms as well, not a big system, making fresh powder at 5,000 feet. you'll notice two to three inches expected on the ski resorts. for us, it's going to stay chilly over the next couple of days. in fact, the rain moves in tonight, we'll clear out for tomorrow. we're talking mid-50s for san

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." action prompted by an investigating unit report, the federal government now grants ten eggs of thousands of dollars in death benefits to a bay widow. we began reporting on this issue a year and a half ago.

it spurred national changes at the postal service and now a very personal victory for this widow. >> reporter: tears of joy for her, in the wake of her husband's death. last week, we aired this report detailing how the office of workers' comp twice denied her benefits. the next morning, the office reopened and reviewed her blame and called her attorney and said it's been approved. >> i go, what? it's absolutely amazing. it was as if they had watched the tv show, the newscast, the night before, and they reacts to it. >> reporter: more than a year and a half after her husband sam died from a severe head injury he suffered during this shift at a postal facility in oakland, the government is now agreeing to pay lonny's family a conversation of sam's salary every year. >> it's the first time it's ever happened. it just don't reverse itself. it goes to the director in

washington to review the decision here in san francisco. >> reporter: our investigation revealed from the start, the cornerer's investigator found that a fall along with landing on concrete, likely caused the severe trauma to sam's head that led to his death. >> when it's an unexplained fall, unexplained condition, there's no medical evidence to the contrary, then it's a proven claim and they have to pay the claim. >> reporter: lonny's attorneys said sam's job was on top of his letter sorting machine before he fell. >> something inside, like says, there's no witness, but something must have happened to him. >> reporter: we obtained a copy of the decision it reads in part compensation as a result of mr. macaisba's work related death should be processed. it said when the program became aware of the denial of benefit, the director reviewed the evidence. >> it is a christmas miracle for

walnut creek, dublin, livermore, brentwood and concord. all in the 30s. that's how cold it is for napa towards santa rosa. . clouds will be on the increase. we're not going to see an overly sunny day. 3:00, 4:00, mostly cloudy and showers will be arriving in san francisco and the north bay. for the rest of the area, we will see rain tonight, once the sun goes down. the rain will eventually clear out right before the morning commute. expect for slick morning roads tomorrow. that was a tongue twister. >> i know. . it's cold in the studio, too. >> it's chilly everywhere. you have to crank the furnace to 80 to expense sate fcompensate .

in crowd places in austria as a precaution. >> translator: we asked the employees of the train and transportation to inform us of suspicious items such as abandoned buggies, bags and buy cycles. >> reporter: it's been six weeks since the paris attacks. and two weeks ago, swiss authorities stepped up security around the united nations headquarters in geneva because of what authorities called it specific terror threats. today's tips comes with a new audio message that appears to come from isis leader al baghdadi was said to be released. in that, he criticizes the influenced saudi led coalition and said isis is getting stronger. our partners at flash point says

officers. brian was busted, fined, actually, he didn't know it but national parks are no-fly zones for drones. yes, there's plenty of breathtaking video online. arch's national park, the grand canyon, zion, the smoky mountains. drones are destructive to people and wildlife. >> that can interfere, let's say, with nesting birds. we had an incident with say drone chasing big horn sheep and actually separating the adults from the young. >> reporter: these spectacular images from yellowstone national park were also captured by droughns. it's the theory that attracts people from around the world. >> i can sit here for hours and look at this. >> reporter: nature lovers who come for this. not this. it just destroys the ambience, is that it? >> it does. maybe not for the user that has the drone, but for the rest of

the public it can be very disturbing. >> reporter: but it's more than the noise, andreas's miser's zone crashed into lake yellowstone. a park driver had to get it out. meissner, a german national, was fine but banned in the park for a year. >> fines can range from $100 to $100,000, depending on wildlife was disturbed or the park sustained any damage. looking at the damage, brian said he gets it. >> definitely with the popularity. i can say with dozens out there on a singular day it would be a big problem. >> reporter: brian paid the $70 fine but said he'll be back without his drone. still ahead on "today in the bay," the awards keep rolling in for is steph curry.

your time now is 7:40. good to be with you this sunday morning. we want to give you a live look outside at oracle arena. cold out there. the warriors will play host to northern california rivals, the sacramento kings tomorrow night. it's been seven years since steph curry first stepped foot in the bay area. in that time, we watched him grow from an underdog to a superstar. he's got two including an nba championship and now he can add one of the most prestigious award nas a player can receive. steph curry was named the 2015 male athlete of the year by the associated press. curry beat out golfer jordan spieth and triple crown winning horse american pharoah. curry helped deliver the nba's first nba title in 40 years. >> that's special.

do have a storm system making its way through that's going to allow clouds for the day. rain is expected for san francisco and points north to date. for this evening, most of us will see a shower once the sun goes down. in the bay, dry there. 54 for the peninsula. east bay, you'll be at 51 degrees today with showers by the evening. again, as i mentioned san francisco and points north. today, we'll see showers at least develop through the afternoon and roll through the rest of the bay area tonight. there's our cold front, you can see how unimpressive it looks compared to this one out west. a weak system passing on through today. not a whole lot to work with but enough to get it through. to put this into motion, you'll know what we're talking about. showers do arrive across the bay. that's when the sun goes down. most of the day will be dry with clouds increasing. and showers will become more widespread. this is midnight. you'll notice from north bay to

south bay. 5:00 or 6:00, we'll start to clear out with early morning commuters, you may run into showers at least as far as the sun comes up. anything less from a quarter inch to a tenth of an inch. it's not going to be a storm system but enough to get the ground wet and a call for a treacherous community tomorrow morning. here's a look at snowfall amounts, 2 to 4 inches expected at 5,000 feet enough to make fresh powder and keep us on this wet trend for the next couple of days. by tuesday, though, that's when we start to dry out. we will start off the new year dry. a trend of wet weather does look to be a thing of the past once we get to tuesday. at least in the next seven days, there's no rain in the forecast once we get past tuesday. temperatures do stay cool, in fact, as you're making plans for new year's eve, here's your official new year's eve forecast. in the embarcadero, you guessed
