first the frost and now the rain. live look in downtown san jose. a bitter cold night lingers into the morning. how long this new system is going to last. plus, temperatures plummet. one community is left in the cold. more on thousands of bay area residents left without gas this morning. flames ripped through an apartment complex killing two people. the details just coming into our newsroom. "today in the bay" starts right now. and a good monday morning, thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kira klapper. throughout the bay area, temperatures are plummeting into the 40s and 30s as another storm system rolls in and icy temperatures mixed with wet weather, you get slick roadways. a live look right now at the golden gate bridge on the left and palo alto on the right. >> meteorologist kari hall

tracking this system. >> it is bringing some rain, but much of that has now moved off to the east leaving behind some very chilly temperatures and we will be cold as we go into the rest of the dand the next severl days look very chilly. slippery road conditions and temperatures now in the upper 30s in the north bay and the east bay. looking at highs that will only reach into the lower 50s with breezy winds. i'll detail what to expect through the rest of the week, that's coming up. let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> as always, when weather is involed, i'll follow your lead. as that system passed through, look at that water kicking up. it is not raining and the maps you'll see the effects on our road weather index. the green highlighted right here. those areas have wet roadways and damp for the rest of the bay area roadways. looking towards livermore starting to dry out a bit. crash here on 580 and 680 and both off to the shoulder and no major issues as you head over towards the bay bridge toll

plaza, an easy drive. 580 and 24 an earlier crash cleared from the roadway. we'll send it back to you. >> now to breaking news flames engulf an apartment building in oakland overnight killing two people inside. now, an investigation under way to find out how this all unfolded. the fire broke out on east lawn street a few blocks away from 0.co coliseum. >> damian is tracking the latest on this story. you were just at the scene, what can you tell us? >> officers coordened off part of east lawn street as fire crews get to the bottom of the cause of this deadly fire, but they confirm two people have, in fact, died. firefighters say it took them between 45 minutes and an hour embatsling the fire. flames coming from the bottom floor and the top floor of the apartment buildings. east lawn street, as you mentioned, only about a mile or so from o.co coliseum. several police officers are on the scene esecuring the area so

investigators can do their job. crews also had to go tine make sure there were no other victims trapped inside the apartment building. the battalion chief on scene confirms two people were critically injured and later died from those injuries. >> i believe the fire came in a little bit after 1:00. and we had active fire from the upstairs and downstairs unit of the apartment building. and the first arriving unit did call a second alarm. >> and not a lot of -- so far investigators are still looking for the cause of that fire. a fire that reached two levels of the apartment building on east lawn street. we'll bring you more information as it develops from the fatal fire in oakland. i'm damian trujillo. >> thank you, damian. we'll stay on top of this story throughout the morning. for the latest updates go to nbcbayarea.com. a developing story now. left in the cold. thousands of discovery bay

residents are braving the plummeting temperatures with no gas heat this morning. now, pg&e crews are scrambling to restore gas lines. >> pg&e says you can blame this on the near freezing temperatures that we have been facing here. >> that's right, sam and kira. they believe the cold snap had to do with the loss of pressure at around 1:00 yesterday morning leaving about 6,200 people without gas in the area. they set up two warming shelters. red cross is also here at timber point elementary. one of the shelters. however, the door is locked. i checked inside. there are cots set up. no one is in those cots. there is pizza boxes and no one here. the temperatures hitting the 30s this morning. it is very cold. hopefully it means people are finding warmth in their own homes. it did send 200 of its workers out to the area to investigate the exact cause of this outage and conduct safety checks

yesterday and throughout the night shutting off valves to make sure no excess gas would get into any homes. putting signs suggesting using electric heaters. >> it's been cold and, you know, the stoves aren't working. so, we're just kind of brought the kids and my son. we were sitting there over in brentwood and figure we'd come on home and take the dog home and try to get some warmth and some food for the kids. >> and others decided to stay home and discovery bay some neighbors gather in the garage to watch football. this group, though, last night got around in a fire pit to stay warm. now, the other warming shelter here is the community center in town on discovery bay boulevard. p pg&e spokesperson is supposed to be here right around now and waiting for the latest updates from her and, of course, we'll pass that along to you when we get them. live here in discovery bay, stephanie chuang.

as we brave these cold temperatures, search and rescue crews in dallas are picking up the pieces left behind from a deadly swarm of tornadoes over the weekend. more than 1,400 homes are damaged this morning. the area was slammed saturday night. more than two dozen people have been killed by tornadoes in five states since last week paralyzing the nation's heartland. >> we built the house 28 years. sorry, i don't know what else to say. sorry. >> not oonly tornadoes, but treacherous roads, heavy rain and the threat of whiteout blizzards. in missouri at least eight people killed in widespread flooding. more dangerous weather on the horiz horizon. kira, the big question facing investigators right now is that the mall tav cocktail

friday night or early saturday morning. you can see right there a little bit of damage. nevertheless, just one of series of attacks at mosques and muslims across the country. last night the islamic center for almead held a forum. the interfaith gathering was to get folks to talk about this issue. they want everyone to take a stand against hate crimes. >> a political rhetoric going on in our country the last month or so and, unfortunately, from political candidates and people making inflammatory statements about muslims and suggesting different things to keep people out of the country. i think it's not acceptable. >> the attack on the tracy mosque was one of two on friday. the other one was at a mosque in houston, texas. the arson there caused quite a bit of damage. no suspect yet in either attack. we'll shift dweer gears a l bit right now. the last monday of 2015.

hard to believe. it is wet and cold out there. it really does feel like the end of december. doesn't it, kari? >> good tahave to have the rain could do without the cold air. as you take a look at the weather at the bottom of the screen. freezing temperatures in low-lying spots and the rain is clearing out and we will have a chance to dry out. now 38 degrees in livermore and oakland and 40 degrees in san francisco and only 42 degrees and highs reaching 49 degrees in morgan hill and redwood city, as well as the outer sunset and 48 degrees in santa rosa and dublin a high of 50 degrees. i'll show you the gradual warm up as we go through the weekend and then let you know if there is any more rain coming up in a few minutes. let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike. >> we'll start with the bay bridge toll plaza. you see a little puddling in the parking lot, that is around the bay. w wetter in the south bay and not a big deal, no major problems.

federation find nearly half of consumers plan to shop this week, which could account for 15% of retailer holiday sales. 15% of holiday gifts will be returned and that could lead to fraud. the nrf says retailers expect fraunl lnt returns to cost them about $2.2 billion. and diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but that relationship isn't helping sales. a report by consulting firm projects diamond sales will rise about 2% this year versus a 4% gain last year and that's going to lower demand from china, luxury goods market and changing consumer attitudes. the survey finds 8% of brides got an engagement ring this year with a nonprecious stone. call me traditional, but i think i'll keep the diamonds. >> yeah. who doesn't love a diamond. >> everybody? he didn't go to jared. thank you very much, landon. now, we're going to send it

over to box office records that have been smashed over the weekend. >> yes, specifically "star wars the force awakens" has reached $1 billion in box office sales faster than any other film in history. >> enough to see the same eyes in different people. >> the movie reaching the mark after only 12 days in theaters. this also is not the first record that the movie has shattered. "the force awakens" the biggest debut weekend ever recorded bringing in 238 million bucks. also broke a record on christmas day with more than $49 million in ticket sales. safe to say, the movie at least from a box office perspective absolutely a hit. >> are we still the only four people who haven't seen that movie? >> the sales helps when pop costs $100 a bucket. >> right. >> counting on the light sabers

and the yoddas that were purchased. who knows how much money they were made. >> yes, it's been great to have all the rounds of rain moving through, but all been in advance of very cold air. we just cannot get rid of these freezing temperatures and chilly air even during the afternoon. as we take a live look at a wet roadway as you head out this morning in the south bay. the cars are the just flying and splashing up those puddles. even though the rain has moved out, you may still need the windshield wipers and we'll check in with mike to see if anywhere is slowing down. looking at rain farther to the north of us and a lot of this fizzling out as it moves to the south. our main round of rain now moving off to the east and producing even more snow for the sierra. once again, the rain has stopped falling from the sky, but we still do have some puddles and some chilly temperatures. as it continues to dip this morn, we may have some icy spots and also frosty conditions that you may have to scrape off of the windshield.

as we go hour by hour in livermore. 6:00, 37 degrees. some peeks of sunshine and we will still see the clouds hanging around throughout the morning and becoming mostly sunny today and that still does nothing to help out and warming up our temperatures we will stay in the upper 40s to lower and we will dry out and an approaching storm system moving through on wednesday that could bring a few scattered showers to the north bay and most of the bay area will not see those showers as they continue to move through. so that weak cold front that is moving through now will just bring in another shot of cold air. by the end of the week, we will continue to see these blasts of chilly temperatures and that will drop us down to close to freezing in the valleys every morning pretty much through this week. but our high temperatures will start to make it into the mid to upper 50s. san francisco up to 56 degrees on wednesday. slight chance of rain for the north bay on wednesday. else where mostly sunny skies and 58 degrees on the east shore on wednesday. and this weekend, highs reaching

into the upper 50s to lower 60s. our first weekend of 2016. what is it looking like on the roadways now, mike? >> you dwav a sneak peek and talking about the rain having move out and leaving leftovers. we love leftovers but not when it causes slick conditions. 101 at 680. look at your map. our road weather index has calmed down and that green right in that area. damp roadways and watch the on and off ramps. a little gathering for cash payers and over here in the tri-valley a few issues. we do have a crash 84 right around ruby hill. this little zone where we have some slowing and activity there and blocking one lane as a fire crew just arrived just in case there are injuries. a crash that has been there for quite some time and a crew may be showing that distraction and watch the off ramps and conditions on the roadway itself. back to you. >> mike, thanks. coming up next, firing back.

with the a's. played with the red sox and royals in his career. he suffered a massive heart attack sunday night. had been having serious health problems recently. he had a kidney transplant last month. football star peyton manning says he might sue over a charge that he once used performance enhancing drugs. the denver broncos quarterback vehemently denies it. >> disgusted is really how i feel. sickened by it. that i'm not sure i understand how someone can make something up about somebody. i'll admit he made it up and yet somehow it's published in a story. >> his reaction comes following the airing of an al jazeera documentary. in it a man by the name of charles sly who says he's a pharmacist claims he had supplied human growth hormones to manning. but sly later denied the report saying he made up the story.

the man who shut down a chiptole restaurant in boston because of an outbreak is going to eat there today. boston's chief health inspector said it is a show of confidence. nearly 140 boston college students contracted the potentially deadly virus after eating there. inspectors eventually link the outbreak to a sick employee, not the food. the chipotle reopened on saturday after it was closed for nearly three weeks. health news now and childhood asthma may be on the decline, but not among kids living in poverty. after peaking in 2009, childhood asthma remained steady and then dropped significantly. asthma among poor children has continued to rise. while the data doesn't experts believe children living in poverty may be exposed to more environmental triggers linked to asthma. 5:25 right now. coming up an update to breaking news in oakland. a deadly fire consums an

cold, once again, this weekend to follow a near freezing weekend. >> wet out there. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the radar for us this morning. kari, how long can we expect the wet weather to last? >> you may still have the raindropsing up from the -- cold air is here to stay throughout the rest of the week which the light rain farther to the north. we are seeing that just starting to make its way to the south and that will fizzle it out before it makes it to the bay area. the heavier rain moving off to the east. temperatures left in its wake are in the upper 30s and east bay. san francisco at 42. a high today of 51 degrees. low 50s all across the bay area. more freezing temperatures in the forecast. i'll detail that coming up. let's check in now with mike. a little bit of some company at the toll plaza? >> a little bit. but this is not so bad. we'll look at cash lanes backing up. the fastrak not yet.

no metering lights yet. we'll watch the next couple of minutes as we look at your map and see if things start to build over there. the light traffic flow on the maze and the approach and we'll continue this through the rest of the year. as we zoom out end with the crash west 580 at livermore still causing slowing approaching the scene. back to you. >> mike, thanks. now to breaking news we've been following all morning. two people are dead and an apartment building charred. this happened off east lawn street around 1:00 this morning, but crews are still there trying to access that damage. "today in the bay" damian truijillo with an update on the investigation. you are on scene this morning. >> just at the scene and crews were still there trying to find the cause of this fatal fire. they have police officer os on guard to make sure no one entered the area while they conduct their investigation. but it was a stubborn fire that took crews quite a while to put out. the firefighters say they fought the flames for roughly 45

minutes to almost an hour. when crews first arrived just after 1:00 this morning, they say there were flames coming from the bottom floor and the top floor of this apartment building. east lawn street, as you mentioned, only a short distance from 0.co coliseum and crew husband to go in to make sure there were no other victims trapped inside that building. the battalion chief on the scene confirmed two people were injured during fire. the chief said those two victims later died from those injuries. >> i believe the fire came in a little bit after 1:00 and we had active fire from the upstairs and downs units of the apartment building. and the first arriving unit did call a second alarm. >> and at last check there is no official cause of this fire. investigators will be on the scene for a while looking for any clues. we'll stay on top of the developments in oakland and bring you the latest throughout this newscast.

doing the relight. >> so going door to door maybe around 6:30 in the morning they'll start this again. >> pretty much first thing in the morning as soon as people are getting ready for their day. we want to make sure we are out there getting people relit as we can. and we'll also be checking equipment and just requesting there will be requests for access to property. so, we want to remind people to always ask for vamudi.d. >> so, again, make sure just to ask for i.d. and if you don't feel comfortable, call pg&e. >> this is one of two warming shelters and the other is the community center. the doors here are locked. saying around 2:00 in the morning they did close up. >> we had one person who was here. we were able to relight his home. by 2:00, nobody else had come. but we will be opening up the doors, again, around 6:00 or

6:30. back open for people if they want some warmth. >> can you tell us what people can expect timeline wise? >> people will be out throughout the night, otherwise we don't want to speculate but working safely and as quickly as possible. >> in terms of the outage? the cause? the cause is still under investigation. >> joining us live here this morning. so, again, about 6,000 customers without gas, but they're saying use your electric heaters. they're going to start relighting or going door-to-door in the discovery bay neighborhood around 6:00, 6:30 this morning and the shelters back open this morning. than two dozen people. paralyzing the nation's heartland. >> we built the house 28 years -- sorry i don't know what else to say. >> not only tornadoes but icy roads, heavy rain and the threat of whiteout blizzards. in missouri, at least eight people are dead due to widespread flooding. as for many americans, it was a holiday weekend of hardship with more dangerous weather still on the horizon. and all of this weather is affecting travelers, of course, making a mess of the post-christmas travel for many across the country airports are seeing the worst of it. yesterday one of the busiest days of the year to fly as of late last night delays at airports were reported from dallas to the east coast because of thunderstorms and clouds. okay. in the bay area now, kira, disturbing video that captured national attention. a woman in fairfield hurling her dog to the ground. we want to warn you the video could be difficult to watch.

this video comes from a neighbor. police identify the woman as brand chin just see her throw the dog against the ground and tossing him on to the street. that is to her ex-boyfriend. he said it was a "heat of the moment" kind of thing. >> why did she lose her cool? >> me and her were arguing about some personal things and just got blown up into something else. i think maybe it just got out of hand. >> that video posted on to social media. thousands of people have watched it. police have been looking for chin but say she since left fairfield. we're told the dog is doing okay. well, now an investigation under way to find out how a vaccaville man was found in a creek. the body was found around 5:00 last night in a residential area. police have reached out to the family, but so far they are not

releasing the man's name to the public. they don't believe foul play is involved. police say residentstie shouldn be concerned for their safety. aing wildfire in southern california continues and progress is finally being made. the fire in ventura county is currently 75% contained. firefighters hope to have it fully contained by tomorrow. it ignited friday night along the pacific coast highway north of ventura. dry conditions and gusty santa ana winds fuelled the flames nearly 100 homes had to be evacuated. incredible video shot why tourists from the netherlands captures just how terrifying these fast-moving flames were. the family of five were leaving a lakers game and headed to santa barbara when they found themselves surrounded. >> i was like, this is my last minute of life. >> it felt like an hour, but in the end it was only a few seconds. >> firefighters say the flames were sparked by a downed power line knocked over in a wind

storm. the rain has been steadily coming down the past few weeks now. alameda county making efforts to help get res dnlts through el nino. the county's public works launch this new website on how people can prepare for the rainy forecast this season. the ones we haven't already reported the ones to come-on the site, you can learn about road closures or any reported flooding in the area. also information on what to do before, during or after a storm rolls in. you can get to that website from the alameda county government page. talk about a snowy start to the winter. the sierra received an overload of snow so far. storms dumped a few more inches overnight on top of the couple feet many areas received over this past week. it doesn't look like it's going to stop any time soon. lets let's check in with meteorologist kari hall with the latest on the snow, the cold, the rain. >> we are just about to head into january and more than the average amount of snow in the sierra for this date. as we look at the bay area, we

can still use the some rain. now that clears out and we still have those puddles left over and temperatures are very chilly. it's in the upper 30s for the north bay and parts of the east bay. but about 40 degrees for most of the south bay and san francisco now 42 degrees. highs today really don't climb that much. we're only talking upper 40s to near 50 degrees across all the bay area and does get milder as we go through the week. i'll detail that coming up and let's check in with mike to see what's happening on the roadways. >> dublin west 5 0 and there's the off ramp and puddling. slick roadways, wet roadways. that's what we're warning about. also a note out of the tri-valley and west 580 slows where that crash is still on the shoulder. i'm to say consider one lane blocked by the crew there because we see all the slowing on the approach and keeping folks over. we'll zoom out the rest of the

bay. a smooth drive of traffic and 680 around mission and i'm getting late information from chp once they arrive. bay bridge toll plaza we'll take a live look up there and cash lanes are backed up on the right side and left side not bad. and we'll track this as the metering lights may turn on soon. >> thank you. a british man says he's the first person to roll solo nonstop and it took him almost seven months. >> we want to introduce you to john beaden he arrived in australia yesterday. he spent more than 200 days at sea after setting off from san francisco in june. he road a total of 700 nautical miles and was planning to reach land in october but unstable conditions at sea slowed him down a bit. >> when i sail from san francisco, i didn't realize how difficult this was going to be. i peered right over the edge number of times.

welcome back. for the second time in a week, a southwest airlines flight had to make an unexpected landing at oakland international airport. southwest flight 1665 took off from sacramento around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the plane was supposed to go to denver but once in the air the pilot discovered a mu manacle problem onboard. the plane then circled for two hours to burn off fuel. this is the flight path tracked by flight aware. it spent most of its time above sacramento before landing safely at oakland international. you may remember last wednesday another flight was forced to make an emergency landing. you're watching video of that plane as it did land safely.

it supposed to go to chicago, but had problems with the landing gear. a developing story now in chicago. a city already shrouded in concern over law enforcement and abuse of power. now, police under scrutiny for opening fire and killing two people. the victims a 55-year-old mother of five caught in the crossfire and a 19-year-old college student. this happened early saturday morning. according to the "chicago sun-times" the teen's father called police after finding his son banging on his bedroom door with a baseball bat. when officer os arrived, shots were fired. >> they were confronted by combative individual resulting in an officer firing shots. >> seven times my son was shot. that showed that he was turning away. >> the teen's mother said her son developed a mental illness, but was not violent. the mayor of chicago, rom manual, now calling for a review and how officers respond to

mental health crises. the chp is cracking down on drunk drivers during the holidays and they already busted a lot of people. just since christmas eve, officers have made 600 dui arrests in california. 150 of those happened in just the first six hours of the cr k crackdown. here in san mateo county they're doing their own enforcement. so far that's 29 more than last year. okay, kira, open up the guinness book of world records. the largest cargo ship to ever visit the u.s. headed to the bay area this. if you want to see it, this is what you're in for. the benjamin franklin. 1,300 feet long and hold up to 18,000 of those large shipping containers. that ship launched from china last month and it's expected to arrive at the port of oakland on new year's eve. perspective is everything. to get the full scope of the ship's size. here it is compared to a semi and look at the ship compared to

a jet. finally the ship compared to an aircraft carrier. >> wow. this year you can forget about leaving your christmas tree curbside. instead, consider providing it as a holiday snack for a hungry goat herd. city grazing is a company in san francisco that's giving people a new way to recycle their trees. all you have to do is drop off your bare trees at the business in the bay view. the 80 goats that they keep on the grounds there will take care of the rest. >> goats love to eat. doesn't matter really what it is. they kind of pounce on it as fast as they can. it allows us to give them a little variation in their diet since this is a slow time of year for them. >> it takes the goats just 15 minutes to eat one entire christmas tree. you can drop off your trees over the next few weekends between noon and 4:00 p.m.

conditions as you drive out this morning. it's 42 degrees in san francisco. the north bay 37 degrees and still very chilly. but not freezing this morning. we may still have some icy spots on those elevated roadways, especially with the slick conditions, once again, from that rain that is moving on out. & take it hour-by-hour in san francisco because temperatures in the lower 40s and then into the mid-40s by 11:00. we only hit 50 degrees today and the sun just peeking out. as we go into the rest of the week. we will have some drier weather conditions, but look at this area of rain that starts to move into the pacific northwest. it makes it closer to the north bay and then it kind of fizzles out as that system moves off to the east missing most of the bay area and it will reinforce this cold air that we're already feeling and high pressure builds in to keep us chilly, especially during those morning hours for the rest of the week. we will have a slightly warmer air, some warmer conditions as we go towards the middle of the

week. highs in the upper 50s. all across the bay area, san francisco up to 57. that slight chance of rain in the forecast for the north bay on wednesday. this weekend, we will have highs in the upper 50s. still a little bit cooler than average and then some rain returns as we go into sunday. so, it stays active with every few days some rain in the forecast. and some snow in the sierra. let's check to see what's happening on the roadways now with mike, bay bridge looking good? >> it is looking great. i was concerned a couple minutes ago we saw someone tap their brakes extra hard and caused a ripple back. things have smoothed in on the incline. look at the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. the right approach with the cash lanes and no problems here for the fastrak lanes. no metering lights as you look at your map. a lighter traffic flow and no big deal. we're looking at, again, the
