air following that rain. as we still see some rain to the north, much of that will fizzle out and stay off shore as we continue into drying trend into the afternoon. we will start out at 38 degrees in the east bay. and 37 degrees in the north bay. highs today bay area wide only around 50 degrees, breezy winds and mostly sunny skies. this is the kind of weather we'll see through the week with a slow warming trend. but still freezing during the mornings. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening at that bay bridge. >> an arm full of cars at the bay bridge because i can fit them there in my arms right there. no metering lights and no major backup. we'll continue this trend likely throughout the year and looking at the maps and smooth drive on the approach and smooth drive some folks kind of relax their guard a bit and don't do that because you do have wet roadways and slick conditions and slowing west 580 right here out of the altamont and into livermore. the crash at northliver more has

your slow lane blocked for a few more minutes. they are blocking the slow lane right now because of an earlier crash. the rest your bay moves very well. the wet roadways and watch the connector ramps and the off ramps because they can be slick after overnight rain. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news now. two people dead after flames ripped through an apartment building in oakland early this morning in the 1:00 hour. it happened not far from the coliseum. "today in the bay" damian trujillo and are they releasing any information about the victims? >> not at this point. just left the scene a short while ago. some crews were still there trying to find that cause of this fatal fire in oakland this morning. the fire presented a challenge for firefighters east lawn street is only a short distance from the 0.co coliseum. firefighters fought the flames for roughly 45 minutes to almost an hour. when crews first arrived early this morning flames coming from the top floor and the bottom

floor of the apartment building. crews also had to go in to make sure there no other victims trapped inside the building. the battalion chief on scene confirmed two people were critically injured in the fire and those two victims later died from their injuries. >> i believe the fire came in a little bit after 1:00 and we had active fire from the upstairs and downstairs unit of the apartment building. and the first arriving unit did call a second alarm. >> and, again, at last check, there was still no official cause of this fire in oakland. investigators will be on the scene for a while looking for that cause. police officers are also there to secure the scene for those fire crews. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> another update coming up in our next half hour and also follow damian on twitter or download our nbc bay area app for the latest information as we

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live. two warming shelters open in case people need a place to go to warm up. >> that's right, sam and kira. closed right now, but set to reopen later this morning. but i can tell you it is very cold. it is in the upper 30s right now and was that way throughout the weekend. the elementary school here is one of the few warming shelters that will reopen. closed around:00 this morning after the last person left, but the hope is the doors will be back open before 7:00 this morning. pg&e sent out after 1:00 yesterday at this exact facility

the cold temps may have played a part. spokesman this morning says crews will relight pilots starting around 7:00, 7:30 in the morning. >> as soon as people are getting ready for their day, we want to make sure we are out there getting people relit as we can. >> in the meantime pg&e says those reps would need to access your property today to turn on your gas one by one. so, you'll have to be home for this. this is very time intensive. each repwill do this for about 40 people. leave a door hanger asking you to give him or her a call. one woman was watching the news this morning and was so frustrated that she came out here to timber point elementary school to talk to the reps and ask what's going on. she has been getting different times for when her gas will be restored. unfortunately, it does not have an estimated time, but that this will, obviously, take some hours as we have to go door-to-door to

restore and relight the pilots. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." as we brave these cold temperatures, people in dallas are picking up the pieces left behind from a deadly swarm of tornadoes over the weekend. more than 1,00 homes are damaged this morning. some completely gone. the dallas metro area was slammed saturday night by tornados and flooding. tornadoes have hit five states since last week killing more than two dozen people, paralyzing the nation's heartland. >> we built the house 28 years. sorry, i don't know what i'm supposed to say. i'm sorry. >> not only tornadoes, butty roads, heavy rain and the threat of whiteout blizzards. in missouri, at least eight lives lost to widespread flooding. for many americans, it was a holiday weekend of hardship with even more dangerous weather still on the hurh-urison.

gabe gutierrez will have a live report from one of the areas hardest hit coming up in our next half hour. ugly behavior caught on camera and now captured national attention. a woman in fairfield hurling her dog to the ground. the video you're about to watch is difficult to see. police identify this woman here as brandy chin. you see her take the animal by the collar and just flinging him on the street. the ex-boyfriend said it was a heat of the moment kind of thing. >> why did she lose her cool? >> she and i were arguing about some personal things and got blown up into something else. i think maybe it just got out of hand. >> that video since has been posted on to social media and thousands of people have viewed it. police are looking for chin, but they say she left fairfield. we are told the dog is doing okay. well, the big question facing investigators in tracy today is if the someone threw it

at a door of the tracy islamic friday night or early saturday morning. you can see here little damage, but, nevertheless, just one of the series of attacks at mosques and against muslims across the country. the islamic center held a forum. the inner faith gathering was getting people to talk about this issue and they want everyone to take a stand against hate crimes. >> a political rhetoric going on in our country in the last good month or so and, unfortunately, from political candidates and people making inflammatory statements about muslims and suggest different things to keep people out of the country. it's unacceptable. >> the attack on the tracy mosque was one of two on friday. the other one was at a mosque in houston, texas. the arson there caused quite a bit of damage, but no suspect in that attack, either.

an investigation is under way to find outs how a vaccaville man ended up dead in a creek. his body found around 5:00 last night in a residential area. police have reached out to his family, but so far they aren't releasing his name to the public. detectives say no weapons are found and they don't believe foul play is involved. now to fairfield where police are asking for help asking for people in a shooting. one person was hurt. all investigators can say at this point is people forced their way into a room that hotel and this happened yesterday morning just before 9:00 on central way. some kind of fighten folded and the victim was shot in the hip. the three shooters got away in what is oonly being described as a green sedan. anyone with information is asked to call fairfield police. the chp is also asking for your help to find the person responsible for a deadly crash

and not even know it. police say that a black acura swerved in front of an suv causing that suv to crash killing the driver. here's what we know. the crash happened on antioch on christmas morning on highway 4, just east of l street. the accura driver was wearing a light colored winter hat. there is red trim on the back of the car. continued going east on highway 4 after it swerved. the driver may not have known about the crash. there are dangerous conditions on the roads this morning because the rain continues to fall across the bay yare quu. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall on this la last monday of 2015. >> we're ending this year on a cold front as another cold front sweeps across the bay area. most of the rain now out of here, but leaving behind the slick, wet conditions on area roads. look at how chilly it is this morning as you step out the door. not own is it damp. 38 degrees in livermore and

oakland and concord 39 degrees and santa rosa at 36 degrees. not much of a warm up today. we're only talking upper 30s to lower 50s. these temperatures much cooler than average. it's slowly starts to get milder as we go through the week, but it will still have some freezing temperatures during the mornings, especially in the valleys. i'll detail that and what to expect as we go into the rest of the week. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. let's see what's happening on the bay area roadways with mike. >> not a lot. that's good stuff. look at that easy drive. we still have a little damp roadway. be careful those off ramps, an example and slows into livermore. let's show you the map and a slower drive towards the crash. just got word that all lanes are clear on the freeway but that off ramp has one lane as they continue to clean up from an earlier crash. no major injuries, but that's the worst of your backups for the entire bay as we zoom out, no problems towards the bay

new this morning iraqi military forces have retake on the city of remamadi. it is close to baghdad and iraqi military spokesman first announced that city had been fully liberated, but a military leader in anbar quickly clarified that forces had only retaken a strategic government complex. parts of the city do remain under isis control, but isis fighters have retreated from 70% of ramadi. crews in australia trying to figure out the best way to start clearingens of train cars that jumped off the track yesterday. a scary-looking picture, but not nearly as scary as what was inside of that train which was carrying sulfuric acid. people are not allowed anywhere

near the area. happened in a rural part of northwest queensland. flooding is making that cleanup even more difficult. the fight continues this morning against a raging wildfire in southern california but progress is finally being made. the fire in ventura county is currently 75% contained and crews hope to have it fully contained by tomorrow. it ignited friday night along the pacific coast highway north of ventura. dry conditions and gusty santa ana winds fueled the flames. nearly 100 homes had to be re c evacuated. incredible video and it captures just how terrifying these fast-moving flames are. the family of were leaving a lakers game heading to santa barbara when they found themselves surrounded. >> it felt like an hour but in the end it was only a few seconds. >> the flames were sparked by a downed power line and knocked over in a wind storm.

city grazing is the company in san francisco that's giving people a new way to recycle their trees. all you have to do is drop it off at the business' location in the bay view district. the 80 goats that they keep on the grounds will eat your tree right up. >> goats love to eat. doesn't matter really what it is. yeah, they kind of pounce on it as fast as they can. it allows us to give them a little variation in their diet since this is a slow time of year for them. >> slow time of year, but the goats are fast. it only takes them 15 minutes to eat through one tree. they can chew through about 20 trees in one day. you can drop affyour trees for the next few weekends between noon and 4:00 p.m. >> make sure that they'll just find some goats and throw your tree. >> go to this business and it off. >> it could be really bad.

>> toss it over the fence. all right, trying to keep our trees green moving well into the spring here because we're getting more showers, kari. >> a lot more rain as we know into the overnight hours. but now it is starting to dry out. as we take a live look at the bay bridge, we are seeing some clearing skies in san francisco. behind an early morning shower. it left about 0.1 and now it is clearing as far as the raindrops falling from those clouds. but we still do some wet roadways and you may have to turn on the windshield wipers as the cars ahead of you kick up some of that water. a lot of puddles left, too. now we start to see the clearing skies moving in. still some rain farther to the north. that will be fizzling out. and we see that rain is now farther to the east, also some more snow for the sierra. 38 degrees in the east bay and 33 degrees in the south bay. look at how chilly it is. let's drop in on the north bay. freezing in cal stoega and may still have some slick spots that

may ice over. creating some very slippery conditions and maybe some black ice, especially on the elevated roadways. head up about that. let's go hour-by-hour in oakland. as we start out, a few clouds left. 80 degrees at 4:00 and then up to 52 degrees by 3:00. still a very chilly day. behind this cold front there will be a couple of days of dry weather and then another storm system starting to move into the pacific northwest staying very active. but it looks like with this next round, the rain really starts to fizzle out as it approaches the bay area and mainly bring in some spotty, light showers for the north bay. the rest of us will continue on with some dry conditions and chilly temperatures. mornings will be dropping down into the 20s and some freezing temperatures for the valleys, as well. the three-day outlook brings us some sunshine. the drier weather. temperatures going up a couple of degrees each day. but still cooler than normal in san francisco, up to 56 degrees on wednesday and a slight chance

of rain in the north bay on wednesday and then the rest of the bay area, once again, staying dry until the weekend. our highs will be reaching into the upper 50s. another storm system moving in on sunday with highs in up thor 50s and also those morning temperatures that will still be fairly chilly. let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> kari, the bay bridge toll plaza live look. now at 6:10 we had traffic starting to form, but now we have a lighter flow. so, during the 6:00 hour, we've seen traffic get lighter at the bay bridge. very unusual. but often happens at this particular time of the year. as we look at your map, we're talking about the week between christmas and new year's. so very light around the bay and no metering lights and, again, like we said, any burst has simmered down. we do have some slowing way out here out of the altamont and into livermore and starting taease up quite a bit, as well. cleared all the lanes for the freeway and may have cleared that off ramp west 580 at north livermore avenue. the back up because they had one lane blocked for a period of

super bowl l they're learning how to navigate throughout sfo on bicycles. the airport is expecting a lot more travels during that time as you might imagine and in a large crowd, the bicycles make it easier for paramedices to get to an emergency scene much faster. the paramedics are in training right now learning how to navigate in and around the terminals. super bowl l in case haven't kept track is coming up february 7th at levi stadium in santa clara. case you were wondering what does the largest cargo ship look like? the visit to the u.s., specifically to the bay area this week. take a look at the benjamin franklin is 1,300 feet long and hold up to 18,000 of those large shipping containers. the ship launched from china last month and it is expected to arrive at the port of oakland on new year's eve. for the celebration. let's look at this in perspective.

shelters. supposed to reopen any minute now. pg&e has to go door to door and turn on the gas. as a safety measure, to make sure no extra gas seeping into homes. on the latest from pg&e and crews are getting together at the command center. right now we'll start up again around 7:00, 7:30 this morning. >> we'll make sure we'll be out there getting people relit as we can. and we'll also be checking equipment and just requesting there will be requests for access to property. so, we want to remind people to always ask for a valid i.d. >> now, you have to be home in order for pg&e to turn your gas back on. when this is all done depends on how many people are home when those crews stop by. if you are not home, you'll get a phone number to call. if you need the warming shelter,

come to timber point elementary school. the discovery bay community center will only open if there is overflow. live here in discovery bay, stephanie chuang. >> thank you. also developing, torrential rains, deadly tornados and now blizzards. search and rescue crews are combing through several states as severe weather continues to pound much of the country. the "today" show gabe gutierrez is in garland, texas, this morning. one of the areas hardest hit. >> sam and kira, good morning. texas' governor has declared four counties disaster areas and the official death toll over the weekend right now stands at 11. at least nine confirmed twisters and spanning 40 miles near dallas. it was an ef4 twister leaving hundreds of homes destroyed with winds up to 200 miles per hour. this wild weather is extending throughout much of the country. today new mexico is under a state of emergency. parts of that state have seenly

two feet of snow and wind gusts up to 82 miles per hour. parts of the oklahoma and texas panhandles are also on ice and further north there have been at least 13 weather-related deaths due to flash floods in the midwest. here in texas, damage assessing crews will be out in force today as residents strug tool clean up. back to you. >> gabe, thank you very much. all of this dangerous weather affecting travelers and it's making a mess of the post-christmas travel for many across the country just trying to get back home or see their families. airports are seeing the worst of it. yesterday was one of the busiest days of the year to fly. and as of late last night, delays at airports were reported from dales to the east coast because of thunderstorms and low clouds. a southwest airlines flight had to make an unexpected landing at oakland international airport. this is the second one in a week. southwest flight 1665 took off from sacramento around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the plane was supposed to go to

denver but once in the air, the pilot discovered a mechanical problem onboard. the plane then circled for about two hours to burn off fuel. this is the flight path tracked by aware. it spent most of its time north of sacramento before landing safely at oakland international. and you may remember on wednesday another southwest flight was forced to make an emergency landing oakland. this is video of that plane as it landed safely. that flight was supposed to go to chicago, but had problems with the landing gear. now to tracy where investigators fatesing a big question today. was the molotov cocktail thrown at a mosque a hate crime? someone threw it at the door of the trace ae ay and there is li damage. just one of a series of attacks at mosques against muslims and across the country. here in the bay area last night, people gathered at a forum at the islamic center for alameda. the event was aimed at getting

>> we need a lot of layers today because it is cold and the rain is rolling out. it's still wet after an early morning rain moves through the bay area. we do still see the clouds as we take a live look at san jose. and the cars are rolling across the interstate with no problems but watch out for some puddles may be left on some of the side roads that have not been as well traveled. now, as we take a live look at the radar and the satellite. the snow continuing in the sierra. the batch of the rain moving east. and there's still some rain to the north, but a lot of that has been drying up before making it to the north bay. and i think that will be the trend. we're in dry for weather and chilly temperature. only 36 in the north bay and as we drop in on the south bay, right at about 40 degrees. we're looking at much colder air as we go into the next several mornings with drier conditions. so, let's take it hour-by-hour in livermore. at 7:00, 37 degrees and after

such a cold weekend, nice to get warmer air, but only make it up to 50 degrees this afternoon there and mostly clear skies tonight. we will have yet again another storm system moving in by the middle of the week, but this one will weakening as it approaches the bay area. still may drop off some of the scattered showers for the north bay. but the rest of the bay area not expecting any more rain. so, this cold front rolling to the east and we'll have some calmer winds moving in. the next front once again, stays to the north of us and high pressure builds and that will keep it dry but still very chilly as we get some more cold rolling in. as we go into the next three days. highs warming up a couple degrees each day. mostly sunny skies and 58 degrees by the middle of the week. san francisco up to 56 degrees. slight chance of rain, once again, for the north bay. as we ged get ready to wrap up this year and welcome in the new year. we still keep the same kind of weather with highs cooler than average into the upper 50s. rain in the forecast as we go

into sunday. looks like at least for the storm system, we will still see some active weather for the next several days with a couple breaks in between. let's see what's happening on the roads with mike. >> very quiet at the bay bridge toll plaza. 6:51. no metering lights and no backup. we can also show you a nice sunrise. go over at golden gate bridge. the other side of the bay. a nice, smooth, steady flow of coming down from the north bay. no problems. in fact, the golden gate bridge with this beautiful view will be very popular this holiday week. that's why the bay bridge is slow light over there. let's look at your map. the only area where we do have a lot of slowing is west 580 coming out of the altamont in towards livermore and the north livermore crash has cleared from the roadway and we just went from yellow to green. speeds improving there. a live look at san jose with an easy flow northbound and slicker roadways possible as you hit the

>> the fire investigators are still investigating and i left the scene at 4:30 and some big trucks there but crews still there trying to find the cause of this fatal fire. it presents a challenge for firefighters east lawn street is only a short distance from the 0.co coliseum. firefighters say they fought the flames for roughly 45 minutes. almost an hour when crews first arrived early this morning, they say there were flames coming from the top and the bottom floor of the apartment building. crews also had to go in to make sure there no other victims trapped inside the building. the battalion chief on the scene confirms two people were critically injured in the fire. the chief also said those two victims later died from their injuries. at last check there is still, again, official cause of this fire. investigators will be on the scene for a while looking for that cause. police officers are also there to secure the scene for those crews. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." pg&e crews are scrambling to

get the heat back on for 6,000 people in the east bay without it. >> steph, it was in the 30s overnight. >> and still is in the upper 30s. thankfully we're inside timber point elementary school which reopened as a wming shelter. also fresh coffee brought in just now by the local restaurant boardwalk grill. she says burritos a s ars are c right up. 200 people have gotten their gas back. the big question is when will the gas be on for the remaining 6,000 folks in the bay area. depends on whether you're home when the 150 reps go door to door and that's supposed to start around now until maybe 7:30 this morning. they go door-to-door to relight those pilots and must be done individually and access your property, maybe go inside. ask for valid i.d. they're also investigating the cause and said that cold temps
