people. where are you? oh, yeah. you're coming home from a big party. well, i'm going to work this morning. and it's a great way to start out the day with chilly temperatures as we take a live look at the bay bridge. you can see all the cars still rolling across the bridge this morning, but we won't have that normal traffic that we see during this time of morning or through the rest of the morning. as we look at the freeze warning, you can see all of these areas shaded in blue. that's where we do have a freeze warning that continues until 8:00 this morning. and it does not include the immediate coast or the inner bay, as well as san francisco. but our lows will be dipping down into the 30s. and freezing temperatures. you can see that already in the tri-valley and concord and in napa 36 degrees in santa rosa now at 28 degrees. as we go hour by hour in san jose, we do make it out of freezing. a few clouds this morning and then it all clears out. we'll have a lot of sunshine

throughout the day. 11:00, it's 45 deit grgrees and mostly clear skies until a few more clouds move in tonight. we're getting ready for wet weather as we go into tomorrow night as well as sunday and then again next week. because of a few storm systems out there in the pacific that will be moving in. the first round looks to arrive with some spotty showers by sunday evening and then as we go into monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. we're going to see several rounds of rain moving in. so, get ready for some downpours and some chilly weather to go along with that. some of the initial computer models give us about 1.5 to 2.5 inches over the next seven days in these areas in the purple. blue will have lesser amounts, but still quite a bit and where we need the rain the most in the north bay. it looks like we will be getting that as we go into next week. in the near term this weekend, starting out the year won't be bad. we'll have dry weather today and

most of the day tomorrow. on sunday scattered showers moving in and highs in the upper 50s for some spots like the east bay and the south bay. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. for now, back to you, sam and laura. happening right now, the finishing touches being put on the 2016 rose parade floats this morning, actually. families camped out overnight to get their primetime sidewalk spots and kids sleeping in their sleeping bags there. this year they expect more than 700,000 people to line colorado boulevard to watch that parade. now, pasadena police say that extra officers, surveillance cameras and other security measures will be in place, but they also say their best resources are the parade goers themselves. >> don't rationalize it. if it's concerning how your initial observation is concerning enough, then give us a call. >> documentary filmmaker ken burns is going to be the parade's grand marshal. and representing the bay area at the rose parade, the saratoga high school band.

>> they're going to be performing a song born right here in the bay area. ryan has their story ♪ >> reporter: behind that red banner is where you'll find the band these days, practicing and practicing and practicing. >> practicing for the rose bowl especially during finals. >> reporter: they put in long hours preparing for the couple minutes they'll be on the live broadcast. some of them have been on the tv screen before. >> we're seniors so our freshman year we went so for us and the entire graduating class it's really like full circle. >> reporter: they'll be the only high school band from the bay area. in a nod to their home town they'll play journey's "don't stop believin'." ♪

area news at 11:00. across europe security was extra tight due to terrorist threats but the 2016 celebrations were a success. big ben tolled at midnight to ring in the new year in london. the festivities included an impressive firework show. love to see the glorious sydney australia fireworks every year. that city ushered in 2016 with spectacular pyrotechnics. we showed it to you live yesterday. taiwan set off their fireworks from one of the tallest buildings in the world and here's how 2015 went out with a bang in bangkok. in thailand, three major celebrations happened across the city, along with 15 minutes of fireworks. lots of planning there. and, lastly, paris canceled its usual new year's firework

okay. i'm looking right now at the, i don't know what you're bopping to, but try the tune of this. 28 degrees right now in parts of the north bay. we were just reading that. is it really 28? >> it is freezing. and people heading home from parties or maybe you're getting up and going to work this morning, bundle up, again. look at these low temperatures in the north bay. 28 degrees. let's drop in on the east bay where it is freezing in some spots and parts of the valleys and in sunol 38 degrees and alamo 40 and then go down to pleasanton and it's 28 degrees. we do have a wide range in temperatures even this morning in san francisco. it's 44 degrees. you're not included in the freeze warning, but other spots are. and we are going to see those highs up to 54 degrees in los

gag gatos and palo alto. 56 in santa rosa as well as pittsburg today. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. 4:55 right now. police in san leandro think they have a serial robber on their hands. take a look at this surveillance picture shows the armed robber at a valero gas station yesterday. police believe that he's also responsible for holding up four other 7-elevens and another gas station. all these incidents happened since december 21st. anyone with information is asked about the serial robber is asked to please call san leandro police. seven audis snatched from an auto repair shop and now police are wondering if it was actually an inside job. san francisco police say the suspect, three men and a woman knew exactly where the keys were near 12th and howard in san francisco. even knew how to access them.

police are still looking for the suspects. an update now back on the table. some dungeness rock crab are safe to eat but not here in the bay area. where the crab ban has been lifted to santa barbara counties. now crabs caught in other areas still unsafe to eat because of those toxins. you may remember back in november, the california department of fish and wildlife postponed crab season up and down the coast due to the discovery of those high toxin levels in the crabs. 2016 may be a brighter year for the bay area shipping industry. the largest container ship to ever dock in the u.s. arrived yesterday. it's the benjamin franklin. it barely squeezed under the golden gate bridge with just a few feet to spare. look at the size of that thing. the mega ship is longer than the empire state building and wider than a football field. it can carry up to 18,000 shipping containers. yesterday's load filled with
