well. palo alto already a wet start to this morning's commute and the raindrops are just beginning. >> right now round and team coverage back-to-back on the soakings and kari hall, first, tracking all kinds of different storms. >> good morning. this first one is light with scattered rain moving from south to north as we go through the day. so, you've seen the rain in parts of the south bay and you head out the door and may not be raining now but the streets and the sidewalks are all wet and you have to turn on the windshield wipers as the cars in front of you kick oplittle bit of water. in the north bay, you haven't seen much of it yet, but as you can see on the radar, it is moving in. temperatures mid to upper 40s and heading up into the upper 50s in the south bay. san francisco up to 54 degrees and the peninsula a high of 56. rain today, tomorrow, wednesday, thursday, as well as saturday. i'll give you all the details coming up. but let's see what's happening

on those roadways with mike. >> looking for a break on friday. something for you to look forward to. you can look towards the bay bridge and the sprinkling and the drops forming on the lens here and also the slick roadways as the crowd starts to build subtly. we're seeing a smooth drive for the maze. reports of some vehicle dropping, maybe some debris in the lanes. sound like somebody dropped the box off the back of their truck. no slowing shows up and that was reported around gilman and a smooth drive for the rest of the bay and eastbound 580 countercommute getting over towards the and somewhere just past greenville. let's check in with "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live at the san mateo bridge. steph, how is the storm faring out there. you have your hood on. >> it is a very light sprinkle right now. the ground, though, plenty wet. you can see the commute really not there yet this morning that san mateo bridge. but rain is the story, as you heard not just for today, for

the week all across the bay area. people started breaking out the umbrellas and rain gear yesterday as the wet weather moved in and this morning the grounds are wet enough to make the drive slick for the commute and the rain loosened up rocks and other debris and areas like woodside, for instance. the chp warning also about the puddles very difficult to see until you're in them. >> travel away from the edges of the roadway. sometimes because people throw trash in the roadways and that clogs the drains. just be aware that there may be some water that is standing still. >> cities like south san francisco already starting to put out information on sandbags to where to pick them up and how to use them to best prevent flooding. slowing down, of course, another message from the chp to give you time to react and to drive safelsafe ly this entire week the biggest storm expected to move in

49ers york and will be speaking to the media here at 10:30 this morning. not a surprise that they fired head coach jim tomsula when you consider the record of 5-11 this season. their worst season since 2011. >> after last year's disastrous off season ceo jeb york decided to make amend this off season. he started immediately just after the 49ers season ending victory, jim tomsula fired as head coach. >> and that was comcast sports, they fired after the team's 19-16 overtime win against the st. louis rams. that was the last game of the season, of course. this was tomsula's first season as head coach. he was brought on board after york's controversial decision to fire the previous head coach jim harbaugh. york released a statement to the

media last night announcing tomsula's firing and reads in part, jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years. he is a man of high character, his contributions on the field and in our community always been greatly appreciated. this entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside jimmy. we all wish him and his family great success in the future. and within an hour of that announcement being released, the former head coach of the 49ers and current michigan university of michigan head coach jim harbaugh tweeted out this message and i'm quoting here, do not be deceived. you will reap what you sow. very cryptic. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 5:05 right now. in the meantime, what is nextt for the oakland raiders. could find out more when team owners are expected to file paperwork to move and relocate to los angeles. the chargers and rams and nfl committee will then review the

plans and make a recommendation. fans are hopeful the raiders will stay in oakland. we went to a watch party at buffalo wild wings in hayward yesterday where many had signs showing their support. sunday was the last raiders' game of the season and they lost in kansas city to the chiefs. as for the potential move, a decision is expected in the coming weeks. for the latest on what's nextt for both these bay area teams, head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. we'll update these stories with the latest information when we get it. two people in police custody this morning accused of killing a palo alto man. this man and woman shot 42-year-old neal gandler to death last week as he sat in his car outside a las vegas gym. investigators suspect he may have been killed during a robbery attempt. now here is a photo of the victim from his business card. he lived on clara street in palo

alto. we spoke to one of his friends who said he could not believe this happened to someone with such a promising future. >> a very warm, caring individual. it's really kind of devastating to me because he was a bright, young individual. very cheerful and i would never think that would happen to someone like him. >> both suspects are behind bars on suspicion of first degree murder. the two charged with armed robbery and a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery. san francisco police asking for help identifying this gunman in the robbery of a gas station. you can see the robber pull out his weapon just as the clerk opens the register. it all happened on the morning of december 13th at the 76 gas station at the corner of lincoln avenue right from ocean beach, up from ocean beach in the city's outer sunset. if you know anything, call police. looks like it is going to be a rainy, rainy week. let's check in with kari hall. >> make sure the kids have on the rain boots today. they'll need it maybe jumping

around in puddles as the rain streams in from south to north and the first system moving through and the rain has mostly in in parts of the east bay and the peninsula. it hasn't yet made it to the north bay but as i look at some of the heavier rain off shore, that will be moving into the north bay within the next hour or so. this is the way it pans out on computer models. by 9:00, much of the heavier rain is now moving off towards the north and east. there will be some breaks today and maybe even a little bit of sunshine coming out as we go into the afternoon. tonight is when the heavier rain rolls in and it will be here for several hours before it clears up by the time you head to work tomorrow morning. i'll detail what else to expect as we go through the week. that's coming up. let's see what's happening on the roadways with mike. >> stefchuang was over on the foster city side where she got some sprinkles in. you see the glow for the lights. look at your map, we're talking about damp, wet roadways and kari is talk about that rain continuing throughout the

weekend. we have the green here. the highlighting means you'll get the slick roadways. we'll look at san jose, no problems for the south bay. here's 101 right at 680. back to you. the commute across the dwoelden gate changing, again. starting today, there will be three lanes going north and three going south most days. now, back in september bridge managers tried out a program that switched those lanes to four north, two south during the evening commute. turns out didn't help that much and backed up traffic going into the city. so bridge management will only change the lanes on thursday and fridays. no other days and then only for a short time. it's 5:09. coming up, playing the blame game. >> they've created isis. hillary clinton created isis with obama. >> harsh accusations coming from donald trump and his attacks on clinton's husband continue, as well. plus, taking a stand on gun control. the big move expected today from president obama. =scott/ots= president obama is

raining outside. so, you do have an excuse, right? to wait until next week maybe. as we take a live look outside right now in san jose. no raindrops falling that time but as you get out and start driving, you may see the streets are wet. we had some rain off and on and mainly light showers moving from south to north and that is what we will see as we go through the day as this first system arrives. we can see that rain streaming in and as we go into the day, there will be some breaks. but as we start to see that approaching the north bay, it's about to get soggy there, too. the rain runway just opens up as this is a look at the jet stream. you can see those streamlines just rolling those low pressure systems into the bay area. it will be staying active and this is the way it plays out. as we look at the futurecast. some rain today and then we see the heavier downpours in the next storm system starting to approach as we go into early tomorrow morning. this is early in theern moin mo.

you may be awakened with rain hitting the roof and it will be pouring for a couple of hours and rolls off to the east and dumps rain in the sierra and breaks in the clouds and spotty, light rain all throughout the day and a little bit of a break before the next storm system arrives on wednesday. so, it looks like we have the possibility of about four storms moving into the bay area within the next seven days. and with that, we could have soaking rains. the rain outlook for most of the bay area brings us about an inch and a half 2.5 inches in the next seven days. the next three days look like this. highs in the upper 50s. not bad as far as temperatures and we're still keeping the near average highs as we go into the peninsula, san francisco. mostly cloudy skies and you can see the rain icon just about every day this week. and a lot of snow also will beening in the sierra. the possibility of up to one to two feet of snow. kirkwood looks like it will be

getting the most. also in bear valley. let's check in and see what's happening on the roadways here with mike. >> kari, we're looking at a little build over here for the cash lanes and notice water on the lens, they run the wiper. the roadway has the sheen and slicks here, as well as around the bay. the golden gate bridge shot shows you some of that on the lens. scott told you about the change for the lane configurations starting after the morning commute. i want to point that out. two lanes northbound and four lanes coming into the city and 3 and 3 for the rest of the flow and standard flow aside from the experiment they had the last few months. smooth drive out here and kari used all her cullers for the radar as the rain comes in, but right now we just have green for the speed sense, as well as the rain, wet spots around the bay. that's where you're highlighted in green all throughout these maps. no big drama yet. yet. >> let's hope it stays that way. armed protesters storm a building in oregon. what they're demanding as security concerns heightened

to ever visit the united states is sailing out of the bay today. the benjamin franklin docked at the port of oakland on thursday, but not before making a trip under the golden gate bridge twice now the ship brought items like clothes and electronics and toys mostly from chine raw. it will leave around 2:00 this afternoon with a whole bunch of fruits and vegetables headed back to china. 5:25 right now. federal government taking a serious look at nestle's water bottling operation and its impact on wildlife. nestle bottles the brand in the san bernardino national forest. groups including environmentalists are suing. they say the permit for the option expired decades ago. the nestle says it's still good because it applied for a renewal before it expired. groups filing the suit say the company is siphoning off about 68,000 gallons of water a day. they say the water bottling operation and the drought are having a terrible effect on endangering animals in the area. now, a forest service

thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. midst of round one of storms headed our way. get the rain boots and the umbrellas and a wet week. we have coverage on what to expect from these back-to-back soakings including how your roadways are shaping up for that monday morning commute. first, let's get to meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking the radar for us. the rain isn't expected to let up until maybe next weekend. get one little break in there. >> this weekend a little bit of a break, but as we go into the next few days, just round after round of rain. when it starts this morning with light showers and kind of hit or miss and then the heavier stuff rolling in tonight. now it's 45 degrees in the north bay and just beginning there. cloudy skies in san francisco. you can tell by the camera, it is wet. and we'll see those showers at times pouring heavilies especially as we go into the next 24 hours. tomorrow morning looks like we'll have a good soaker going

on i'll detail that and what to expect the rest of the week as we get four storms to move in. let's see how the roadways are looking now with mike. >> kari, we'll start over here in dublin and west 580 zoomed in unexpectedly and the westbound commute and fix that digital zoom. enough to show you that traffic westbound is moving well and eastbound away from us, actually, as we look at your map. that's the incident with chp and eastbound getting away from the area and reports of a stalled big rig affecting one lane and not affecting your speeds. westbound that's where you see the orange and the yellow right around north first and a little dip for your commute direction. as far as the south bay and peninsula go, a nice, easy drive. the focus right now is the bay bridge toll mrauza and the green highlighting shows you wet roads and just seen this backup form over the two minutes and should see the metering lights on, guys. back to you. a live look at san mateo bridge as this first rain storm continues. >> stephanie chuang on the

foster city side with how things are shaping up for the commuters there. good morning, steph. >> good morning, laura and scott. the rain has picked up a little bit since last half hour and still categorize it as a light drizzle here. the concern, though, is what is already on the roads here. the oils, of course, and the ground already slick from the rain from last night and slowed down the warning from chp because puddles may indicate a who hole in the road. give your time to drive safely. the wet weather picked up, again. the umbrella back out in places like san rafael. this morning the grounds are wet enough to make the drive slick for the commute and the rain has loosened rocks and other debris that built up on the hillside in areas like hillside and the chp will have plenty of officers out and about to help keep people safe. >> just like when we do the portion period. whoever we have scheduled we basically pull everybody out on the road. during the time we do a lot of enforcement, but at the same time we're alsoing for the call to come in. we know people are going to be

harbaugh writing this cryptic message, do not be deceived. you will reap what you sow. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." tomsula's firing will not calm the fury. you had to look up yesterday to see this above levi. the plane flying a banner that said jed, here's our banner. where is yours. referring to jed york's comments earlier this year when he said the team only raises super bowl banners. this is the third time a banner has flown over levi this season. another asked jed york and the 49ers to mutually part ways referring to the firing of jim harbaugh. angry neighbors on the peninsula will have a chance to air their concerns about what they say is a big noise spike in the skies above. the reason more noise from a change flight paths of airlines in and out of sfo. complaints have apparently gone up dramatically. according to the examiner

they'll hold a town hall meeting to address the problems and look at possible changes. another public meeting held at sfo on thursday. 5:36. within the past few hours we learned of a high-speed rollover crash in the east bay as it turned deadly. the crash happened just after 8:00 on 680 north of pleasant hill. authorities say it appears a van was exiting the freeway at high speeds. the driver lost control, crashed into a retaining wall. the vehicle rolled over several times. this morning, police told us the driver and a passenger did die in that crash. a second passenger is in the hospital in critical condition. it is 5:36 right now. a missing hiker in marin county is found dead after days of searching. his body was found yesterday morning at the national sea shore. park rangers say the man began his hike new year's day in the northern part of the park. when he didn't return, search teams began scouring the area. his body was found at the base of a cliff not far from his car. the man's name has not been released. park rangers say he was in his

60s. the cause of his death has not officially been determined. firefighter recovering this morning after he was hurt battling a house fire in vaccaville. five people and two dogs escaped but the home was destroyed. it took crews almost an hour to bring that fire under control. this was yesterday afternoon an cherry glen road just off of interstate 80. they had used water tankers because there were no hydrants in the area. besides leveling the home, the fire also destroyed five cars. a fake grenade norforced a north bay turped out it was a cigarette lighter. police say a man came in with the lighter trying to do the right thing and dispose of it properly. instead, the entire building was evacuated. the man who brought it in was helping a friend clean out a garage and didn't if it was real or not. police say if you find something potentially dangerous give them a call and they'll handle it. a water main break flooding homes in kensington right now.

this is happening in a neighborhood near blake garden on arlington street. east bay mud says the cast iron main broke. the water also damaged the road. they've cut off that water in order to make repairs, but it is going to be several hours before water is back on to customers in the area. neighbors tell us this is the third time a water main has broken in the spot over the past several years. it turns out one of san francisco's most breathtaking sights also carries a potentially hazardous material. we all love the sight of fog rolling through the golden gate. "the chronicle" reports that fog can carry with it toxic mercury from the burning of fossil fuels. mercury levels contained in the fog may be 20 times above mercuries found in rain. the same scientists also say it's still a relatively small amount and poses no health danger. we're certainly going to get a lot of rain a lot of fog. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. this morning it all starts with our first round and

scattered showers moving through. we will, at times, have a few breaks as our temperatures start out in the upper 40s. expect it to reach to the upper 50s today. and the heavier rain expected to arrive tonight with, once again, a little bit of a break in between as we go into tonight. we'll start to see the next storm system moving in. when we see the yellow and the oranges, that means that those downkeep pours will really be coming down and very heavy at times. rainfall rates may be approaching about three quarters of an inch per hour and we will see this for a couple of hours before we take another break before the next one moves in. so, we're expecting about four storm systems to move in this week. today as we have our highs in the mid to upper 50s and our temperatures will still be about close to average as we start out the new year. i'll detail what else to expect as we go through the week and how much rain we can see between now and saturday. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. but, let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike. >> all right, kari.

look over here towards the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights have been turned on. but we do have the left approach little bit of a break there. we'll watch this and continue to build and look at san rafael. we're seeing a return to the regular work traffic but not fully back this week but next week we'll see it hit full force. southbound 101 little more busy traffic flow and we see the glow for wet water. wet roadways around the san jose. we do see a little burst coming up here slight build for the traffic flow. nothing dramatic and we'll track that. the peninsula and the east bay moving well. back to you. happening today, it will be out with the old and in with the new for some south bay commuters who take their first bus rides of the year because sanaa clara valley transportation authorities replacing 29 of its older buses with new, state of the art, clean energy vehicles. this is video from this morning one of the new buses already in action. all shiny and new. that new fleet will operate on

a developing story this morning in india where an earthquake killed eight people and inujured scores more. the tumbler struck before dawn in india's northeast region near minmar. phone and internet access in the region was already poor, so it's going to take some time before we know the full extent of the damage. and more shockwaves this morning from a mass execution in saudi arabia, including that of a prominent shiite cleric. protests around the globe, including in san jose. protesters gathered to show their disgust with the execution of 47 people. saudi arabia had labeled as terrorists. this co insides with protests many other countries including in the middle east and india. now this morning, saudi arabia

have a little bit of hope that you'll be able to find your son. at this point, we were unable to do that and it was, we had to break them some very hard news. >> for six days crews scoured the area searching by foot and boat and air. official os say it's not until that water had receded they were to find the bodies of both the children. a drone may be what sparked a mystery in san francisco that reportedly left neighbors in the dark. happening yesterday when "the chronicle" reports that neighbors heard a pop on a power pole. that's when more than 30 nearby residents lost power. one witness said the man then showed up admitting he lost control of a drone at a nearby playground. that man and his drone took off before pg&e crews got to the bottom of what happened. here's something new drone owners may want to consider. drone insurance. most state insurance companies are recommending you be covered before sending your drones

taking it hour by hour in san jo jose, a wet start to the day, but there you go. see the sunshine coming out right around noon and 57 degrees. won't be a bad day. more cloudsing in this evening as we get ready for the next storm system to move in. and this is a look at the jet stream. this is the pattern of the upper level winds and it will carry the storm systems one by one all across the bay area. and with it, not moving as we go through the week, we will still have this same pattern with the storm systems rolling in. here's a look at the futurecast. by 8:00 tonight, we see some scattered light showers but look at what's happening as it approach shore. we will have some heavier downpours moving in tonight and maybe even some rumbles of thunder that may wake you up tonight. the timeline at 3:00 in the morning we see that rolling on through, but it looks like it does clear out in time for lunch in some spots. still some spotty, light showers in the afternoon and sunshine before that next round moves in.

yes, this is round number three on wednesday. and the rainfall outlook for the next seven days brings us at least an inch and a half to 2 1/2 inches all across the bay area. so, a pretty good soaking with our temperatures staying in the mid up toer 50s. here's a look at the south bay. for the next three days. around 56 degrees on wednesday. in the peninsula also in the upper 50s. san francisco stays up in the mid-50s more of the same in the east shore, tri-valley and north bay. no changes in temperatures, but will see at times some heavy rain moving through. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up, but let's sea happening on the roads with mike. >> kari, we expect most of the bay area to be back from vacations and we don't expect this morning to be the worst of it. a lot of folks return and maybe a later start and kids getting back to school and parents want to make sure the pattern is back in place. the bay bridge toll plaza where you see all lanes backing up and over here at the golden gate bridge show you the sprinkles on

5:55. developing right now. armed protesters taking over a national wildlife refuge in oregon and they say they plan to stay there as long as it takes. they took over the national wildlife refuge saturday following a peaceful sentence after the sentences handed down to two local ranchers. the two men served their five-year sentence but a judge ruled that wasn't long enough.
