as the incline as you expect down at the toll plaza and the flashing lights eastbound, those are gone. no problems and no delay for that crash. we'll look at your maps and see the same thing for much of the bay. no real problems on the approach through the maze. 880 over here at 238. a fender bender and some slowing southbound down through hayward out of san leandro. southbound crash cleared for 101 slowing from 680 to 280 and chp will arrive and i'll give you the details where we don't see any slowing. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news in paris. police officers shot and killed a man with a knife just outside a paris police station on the north side of that city. within the last two hours police announced that man was wearing a fake explosives vest. police a man shouted glory to god in arabic as he tried to enter the police station. this incident one year to the day after the terror attack at the charlie hebdo offices which left 12 people dead along with the two attackers.

this out of new york state where crews have rescued all 17 miners trapped in an elevator some 900 feet underground. it's happening at a salt mine inning 40 miles from syracuse. it's a story we have been following since we came on air at 4:30. crews using a crane with a basket attached to lift four miners out at a time. the last one came within the last 30 minutes. we're told all e17 miners are doing okay this morning give on the circumstances. a developing story an armed robbery overnight at a walnut creek 7-eleven and the profile matches a serial robber that they have been looking for for weeks. bob redell live at that 7-eleven and, bob, you have surveillance videos of what the police are looking for. >> we do. he is connected to other crimes, as you mentioned, scott. they believe the man who held up the 7-eleven here in walnut creek late last night is the same man who hawse hit other

businesses in san leandro. around 11:30 last night that this man pointed a silver handgun at the employee and demanded money out of the cash register and then ran out of the store in a northbound direction and no one saw him get in a get away car. police say they arrived within a minute and set up a perimeter and tracked a scent and never found a suspect. police believe this robber is the same man who robbed a walnut creek gas station on wednesday of last week. the surveillance image from that crime shows the man in an old style ski mask and two more surveillance images taken the next morning. from last thursday morning from the robbery of a valero gas station in san leandro. law enforcement believes this is the same man responsible for at least fived robberies in san leandro, two in walnut creek and one in redwood city. police have yet to release a surveillance image from the robbery last night but describe the man as being possibly asian, 5'6" and he was wearing a black

mask. walnut creek police point out they are working with their counterparts in san leandro and redwood city to try to catch this man before he becomes violent. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell. at 6:03, happening today, we are going to be in court when the grandmother accused of drowning one of her grandchildren is arraigned. fairfield police say hughes confessed to the crime. investigators have not revealed a motive. they say she intentionally drowned her 4-year-old grandson last week. two other children were in the at the time and they were not hurt. well, disturbing video to show you this morning capturing an east bay teacher's aide physically assaulting and now that aide is facing felony abuse charges. kris sanchez live in our newsroom. this may not even be the first case of abuse at this school. >> right, we spoke with an east bay attorney who is currently working with another family that also alleges abuse at that same school in a different incident. but even before the teacher's

aide is charged in this particular incident, the violent images are having a ripple effect and already one family pulled their child from that school. this video is hard to see and hard to watch because we blurred the faces of the students to protect their privacy. it appears to show, though, the teacher's aide is assaulting a special education student striking him in the face and pinning him in his desk and also then pinning him on the ground, as well. the video allegedly taken by another employee and then posted online where a friend was so distu disturbed, she captured it and turned it over to police. now, 26-year-old kamaljot kaur is under arrest on charges of child abuse. the mother of another unrelated-year-old boy at that school said her child will not. . >> a child with special needs

that has trouble verbalizing several things can't tell you, it's scary. >> in a statement tobinworld administrators say we immediately suspended the staff involved and called family and children services and notified the antioch police. the student in the video returned to school wednesday uninjured and has been in class all day. are in inprocess the process ofg a full investigation. tobinworld school is a nonpublic school that serves, the administration claims it only learned of this incident after the video went viral. laura and scott. >> thank you, kris. more surveillance video investigators hoping the video from nearby homes can track down a man behind a sexual assault in an upscale peninsula neighborhood. someone attacked an 18-year-old female jogger on isabella avenue not too far from menlo school and menlo college. this happened tuesday night. police say some time between 5:00 and 6:00 a man came up

behind that woman and threw her to the ground and the incident is leaving some neighbors a little unnerved, including a student who lives nearby and her mother who was visiting last night. >> it makes it a little unsafe to want to just jog, maybe keep it more in the daylight. >> i come to see her as often as i possibly can. knowing this, it might be more often. >> now to clarify, police don't have surveillance video but they want it. it will be a big help because so far the victim has been unable to provide any description of her attackers. they're hoping the nearby homes may be able to provide some. it is 6:06 right now. big meeting today on a very old topic. what to do with a run down, what some call dilapidated santa clara fairgrounds. santa clara county supervisors confess the fairgrounds just can't attract enough business. finances are on shaky ground. not enough money is being made to renovate the building and crews at the property. the idea now is to turn half the

welcome back more layoffs could be coming to yahoo!. the struggling company could cut as much as 10% of its workforce, 1,000 employees. some big investors are pressuring her and calling for her to be replaced. and not just yahoo!. macy's says it will cut nearly 5,000 jobs and close 40 stores. none of those stores here in the bay area. this comes on the heels of very weak holiday sales. macy's partially blames the drop on unusually warm weather in december. that stopped people from buying

coats and other winter gear. next week, microsoft says it will stop supporting internet explorer version 8, 9 and 10. that means those versions won't get security updates any more. so people who use them could be vulnerable to hackers. a final patch will come out tuesday and then they encourage people to upto a more recent browser. there could be a lot more red arrows on wall street due to that turmoil in china. trading has been so volatile overseas, the chinese stock market stopped trading, again, this morning for 15 minutes. the safety measure, a circuit breaker put in place any time their stock index tumbles 5%. yesterday the dow closed down 252 points here in the united states. we'll check those numbers coming up in about 15 minutes when the bell rings. well, speaking of numbers, scott, governor brown releases his proposed state budget today. the governor is under pressure to increase spending. it comes after years of record budget cuts and they somewhat better fiscal situation.

but, with an improving economy, democrats in control of the state legislature are asking for more money for social services and health care for the poor. republicans want to fund transportation and inf infrastructure like dams for water storage. take look at this, the rain so heavy yesterday the woman had to be rescued from flood waters in sonoma county. the truck hit standing water near petaluma and flipped to its side. the driver was able to get out safely a little help there from crews. but a girlfriend was trapped in the car and able to keep her head above water until chp officers arrived to rescue her. flown to a nearby hospital where she, in fact, is recovering. and the storms brought a rare sight just south of the bay area. take a look at this. a funnel cloud formed near salinis. the cloud never touched the ground, but a tornade was confirmed yesterday near hollister. the emergency manager sent us these pictures. the only reported damage was a

building wall that toppled over. the tornado measured an ef-0. the weakest classification. no one was hurt. let's check your weather and traffic together. is there a word for a funnel cloud that doesn't touch the ground other than just funnel cloud. >> just funnel cloud. >> fair enough. >> so many good weather words. well, rain, we got that. >> that is the word of the day. and we are still dealing with the storm system that moved through over the past 24 hours. now, as we take a live look, we the waves crashing up and we may still have some high waves, even as the storm system winds up and moves off to the south and to the east of us. a coastal flood advisory continues through the morning. also a high surf warning at swells of about 15 to 20 feet may roll up today and you just want to never turn your back to the beaches as you head up there. some breezy winds.

this storm system, once again, not bringing any rain right now to the bay area, but there is still some on the radar. still off shore. that will be moving in as we go through today. we can see that on the futurecast. gives ospicture of what this radar and the satellite could look like. some spotty, light rain moving through and there and then as the sun comes out, might see some more rain passing by. you want to keep the umbrella somewhere close by just in case and if it does start raining, doesn't look like it will last long. into the day tomorrow, more rain moving in mainly during the afternoon to evenings. this ahead of the next storm system that is set to arrive early saturday morning and that bringing us another heavy round of rain to get the weekend started. so, for today, highs reaching into the mid-50s. partly cloudy skies. at times rain dropping in and highs reaching 52 degrees today in santa rosa while oakland is at 53 degrees. now, as we take a look at what is happening in the sierra. that storm system still winding down. also a few snow flurriesing by.

as we take a look at the forecast for squall valley and alpine meadows. today clouds up to 14 degrees that will not melt the snow. pack at 87 inches and tomorrow mostly sunny skies up to 34 degrees but a low of 19 and this weekend that next system moves through and brings us more fresh powder as we're expecting several more inches of snow. as far as the snow pack and the update and how we're doing in the sierra at 105% of normal. central sierra doing the best. 113%. we still need some work in the southern see sierra and the statewide, a little over average and at a month ago, we were at half the amount we need to be at normal. making some improvement there's and we will continue to see our rain improving, as well, as we get more storm systems moving in. been pretty good for us as we get a little bit of a break here and there. i'll detail that and what else is to come coming up in the next

forecast. let's see what's happening on the forecast with mike. >> the timing was good for the rain storms to come in because we rebuilt the entire commute and we have the build here for the southbound direction of 101 and all week we've seen lighter flow than we might normally have. let's look at your map. green, wow, that's not a clear throat. clear drive petaluma the only slowing we see novato down into mill valley. smoother drive for the east shore freeway and a new fender bendered for 680 coming down throughant hill. chp will arrive and give you more information, but we don't see any slowing. don't see any slowing here either. the southbound side, that is your commute direction. mild slowing for hayward and just south of that san mateo bridge and the build is on for west 92 now. look at this map, silicon valley, no problems as far as the flow of traffic. a live look for 880 right through mont and even though we have the speed limit sensors going, we have the build for that volume and headlights going

and welcome back on this thursday morning. it's a live look at the waves near san francisco and the golden gate bridge. now, there is a coastal flood advisories in effect until 10:00 this morning. kari hall will have a lot more about the full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. in the meantime, police are asking for your help finding a woman who they say stole credit cards and drivers license and a social security card from somebody on the peninsula. investigators say this woman deposited fraudulent checks into

the victim's bank account and then withdrew $4,000 from that account in late november. this is a picture from the surveillance camera at the bank. this happened in daly city. she may have scars on her face from plastic surgery. if you have any information about this woman, you are asked to call the police. san francisco police developing a smartphone app to help them track down criminals. actually, the idea is to get to help them. you'd be able to use your smartphone cameras to record a crime if you see one in progress. then you touch the app to send a video to police. not making a formal announcement of the app just yet but the head public information officer just wrote about it in a police trade journal. 6:24 and a new detail on a massive gas leak in southern california. governor brown is now declaring a state of emergency over that situation. the leak is sending fumes into the porter ranch neighborhood in los angeles. this has been going on for months now.

this problem is so bad southern california gas had to pay to relocate thousands of people who lived in the area. governor brown toured the site for the first time earlier this week. his emergency declaration should speed up the process, we hope, of stopping that leak. chipotle now under criminal investigation and headed to court. the restaurant chain announced yesterday it has been serve would a federal grand jury subpoena. it's the start of an investigation tied to the norivirus outbreak this past summer at a restaurant outside simi valley. an inspection of that restaurant found several safety violations. this investigation is not tied to a different e. coli outbreak at other chipotle locations. coming up, the opening bell just a couple minutes away. we'll take you there live as we track what could be another bad day for your money. plus an armed serial robber on the run. his latest target an east bay

good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. sam brock has the morning off. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> a chance to dry out after such heavy rain yesterday morning at this time and now we still see some rain hit or miss all across california, but the heaviest rain now to the south of us and this area of low pressure spinning and bringing a chance of rain. but as we get a closer look at the bay area, you see not a drop at this time, but there's still some more just to the west of us. keep the uma handy for a quick-moving light shower today. now, temperatures are much cooler and it's 47 degrees in the south bay and wet roads and standing water in the low-lying spots on the street. today's forecast brings it up to 52 degrees in the east bay and san francisco 53 and 54 in the tri-valley. let's check in now with mike to

see what's happening on the roadways. >> kari, exactly the same thing you talked about. slick roadways but not necessarily flooding. you are not completely in the clear yet. look over here. a clear view of the east shore freeway. westbound 80. we're looking atten gate field which actually is a race track. smooth drive for 880 and almost always there no reason for alarm. we're looking over towards your map and see a smooth drive, as well. little slowing we saw. richmond, no problem for that upper east shore and still rebuilding the morning commute. down towards mill valley and the golden gate bridge. you just saw that go from green to yellow over there for the area of 101 coming through the city. that's typical at this time of day. same thing here for south 680. pleasanton and livermore and 880 out of hayward and in towards union city and all the roadways pushing down through fremont and general move from the east bay and over towards the san mateo bridge itself. so let's look at that san mateo

bridge and westbound your commute is moving well, even if the camera isn't necessarily steady. 101, 280, no delays. back to you. 6:31 right now. police and search dogs are looking for a man they say is responsible for several armed robberies in at least three bay area cities. "today in the bay" bob redell is live at a 7-eleven in walnut creek where the latest robbery happened a few hours ago, bob. >> late last night. good morning to you, laura. walnut creek police believe the man who used a gun to rob this 7-eleven has hit other businesses, as well. at least one in walnut creek and one in redwood city and five in san leandro. police from all three cities are working together to catch this guy before they hurt someone. they are afraid he might turn violent considering he had no problem pulling a gun on employees. the person working the counter at this convenience store.

the suspect displayed a silver handgun, took the money from the cash register and then ran away in a northbound direction. no one saw him get into a car. walnut creek police say they arrived within 60 seconds and set up a perimeter and canine track and had no luck finding the suspect. police have yet to release surveillance images from last night's robbery and images from the other crimes. this image is from the suspect wearing a mask and two more surveillance images taken the next morning. this will be from last thursday morning from ary of a valero gas station in san leandro the description of the suspect in last night's description. they say he's possibly asian, around 5'6" and was wearing a dark mask. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." happening right now. take you out live to the big board. another rough day on the markets. dow industrials losing 268 points. china, once again, shut down its

stock market with circuit breakers after that market fell. and that, in turn, has spooked american investors. apple, which has measured on the dow 30, down almost 3% this morning. east bay teacher's aide faces felony abuse charges after shocking incident caught on video. cell phoneio appears to show that woman at tobinworld school in antioch striking a 9-year-old boy from oaklandpen th. more video shows the same aide striking the student repeatedly. one mother told us after seeing this, she is pulling her son from school. >> when you have a child with special needs that has trouble verbalizing certain things. can't tell you. it's scary. >> now, tobinworld is a special school for private needs students. they only found out about this video yesterday. they issued a statement. last night said, we will immediately suspend the staff

involved. called children and family services and notified the antioch police. the student in the video returned to school today uninjured and has been in class all day. it is 6:34 right now. happening today the man accused of harassing people at bay area mosques is expect tad be in court. he shouted death threats at muz lmgs who were praying at the islamic center last month. later police found a homemade bomb at his home. me pleaded not guilty to a charge of making threats with a hate crime. richmond police have been running extra patrols by the islamic center since that incident. also today the woman accused of attacking muslims is expected to enter a plea. a judge already gave denise slater a restraining order. she's charged with misdemeanor bat and hate crime. police are on the hunt for a san jose man accused of killing his father. police are looking for

but with knowing this, it might be a little bit more often. >> police say surveillance video would be a big help because so far the victim has been unable to provide description of her attacker. 6:36. and the follow up for breaking an alleged animal abuse case out of fairfield. police have made an arrest of neglect caught on camera and went viral and the warning it is hard to watch. the woman seen there was arrested. there she slows the dog. police have been searching for her for over a week after this video was posted to facebook. it shows someone throwing her pug across the ground after she got into a fight with her boyfriend. police say the pug's okay and has placed in protective animal services. she is facing animal cruelty charges and expected in court later today. 6:36 right now. what about the forecast? let's check in right now with kari. a break in the rain. >> break in the rain, scott and laura. giving us that chance to see that moisture just soaking into the ground. a little bit of still some

scattered showers moving through as that storm system continue to spin on the back edge of that and we won't see the heavy rain and the brunt of the storm we saw yesterday. the slick roads and spotty light showers moving through parts of the bay area now as we go into the day, a mixture of sun and clouds and even a little bit of sun coming out but at any time some raindrops may fall from those clouds and into tonight and this evening. temperatures may fall fast. widespread 30s as temperatures continue to fall and the cold air spills in behind that low pressure system. into the weekend, getting ready for the fourth storm of the week and moves in on saturday morning. i'll detail that and take a look at how much rain we have and how that compares to normal and also get a look at some of the river stages and if they're flooding. that's coming up in just a few minutes. let's check in with mike and see how the roads aring. >> very, very well, kari. calmer drive and better conditions and still slick roadways and be careful. of course, the sun out. they haven't dried out yet. northbound 101.

a lot of folks are out now over the last few minutes to build. here in san jose, show you the map and silicon valley area and looking really good as far as that flow of traffic goes. northbound 101 at 680 where the camera was and a build around capital expressway. show your typical trend for seeing the flow come back to its normal pa al pattern and still r than it has been since november. thanksgiving starts to see lighter flow of traffic the end of the year. we're rebuilding now. that's what you see over here in dubl dublin. 580 little build out of the altamont and hayward down into fremont, as well. we'll give you a live look towards the 580 where traffic flows very well. again, damp roadways. you can see some of that sheen and the puddle there. so, watch those off ramps as you're coming off that freeway speed. back to you. >> thanks, mike. people's choice awards got a little nasty last night. >> some guy crashes the stage and grabs the microphone.

6:42. super bowl l expected to bring heavy traffic to the south bay next month. not just on the ground, but in the air, as well. 1,200 private jets are expected to fly in and out of the bay area. the faa is requiring pilots to make a reservation for arrivals and departures. all three major bay area airports, even some of the smaller air fields will be used. an assistant director of aviation says the faa is working to accommodate the rich and famous without affecting hundreds of commercial flights and passengers. but the crowded air space has

frequent fliers worried about delays. >> usually you get it from storms, not from super bowls. >> i'm not going to curse on tv, but that sounds like a show. not an air show. >> not just high rollers, local agencies also preparing for president obama to come to the bay area and attend the games. well, caltrain is getting ready for extra ridership during the week leading up to super bowl 50. a planning meeting is scheduled for this morning. considering additional trains and adjusting train schedules to accommodate the increase of riders. cal train will carry thousands of visitors to and from the south bay to san francisco for several events that have been planned in both cities, including the super bowl itself in santa clara. and happening today, gear heads and car shoppers from far and wide converging in the south bay for the love of cars. it's opening day for this year's silicon valley auto show. the show offering a lot more than just the latest and

now. you know it's been soggy and we have a coastal flood advisory. you're looking now at fort point in san francisco. the waves crashing up and the coastal flood advisory continues as the waves may hit 15 to 20 feet. a look now at what's happening with the storm system. it's winding up. we're not seeing the strongest part of the storm now but still some rain lingers as we look just to the west of us. so, that may be moving in as we go through the day, but a closer look shows that for now we're dry. still some standing water on the roads and you may be stepping into some puddles heading into work. as you go into the day, it shows that the sun will be peeking out, but we still have a lot of clouds and the possibility of some light rain passing. not only today, but into the day tomorrow. ahead of the next storm system. that will be the fourth of this week that we'll be moving through. it starts tomorrow afternoon into the evening and overnight hours. but gets heavier as we go through towards saturday morning. before we start to see that

system wrapping up for the week. so, it's been very soggy. at least today we do catch a little bit of a break at times. highs reaching into the low to mid-50s and cooler tonight. we're talking lows in the upper 30s and valleys. we will be watching out for that. we also have been watching the flood stages and the water levels at area rivers. the russian river at guerneville looking good. well below flood stage and dam is holding up. but as you head towards mark west creek in forestville experiencing some minor flooding there. flood stages at 50 feet and 5.3. so, areas may be flooding and that a concern as we go into the next couple of days, too, with more rain. so, how is it looking as far as our rainfall for this year? we are above average in spots like mountain view and san jose. we're at 115%. the amount of normal from october 1st to today. but we still have some work to do in spots like santa rosa. you've had more rain, but you

require more rain to stay up towards normal. and san francisco, we've had 91% of the amount of normal with close to nine inches of rain and we will continue to see some improvements as we go into the next several days with more storm systems moving through. so, saturday looks wet to start and mostly cloudy skies and then as we head into sunday, a different picture. it will be cool, sunny, a bit of a breeze and, once again, another chance to dry out before more storm systems move in. here's a look at the extended forecast and the way the radar may play out as we go into saturday, once again, a chance of rain. sunday looks dry and then on monday, more showers moving through, snow in the sierra on wednesday. another round of rain moving in. so, once again, keeps it soggy all across the bay area. let's check in now with mike to see how the roads are moving. >> kari, the roadways are moving really well. great day compared to the other days and over here we still have the commute west 80 through berkeley and look how clear the

view is and how easy the drive is past golden gate field. over on the west side of the freeway. we'll look at your maps through the same area and don't see a lot of drama coming down off of the carquinez bridge some slowing past the race track we just showed you and also getting towards the richmond san rafael toll plaza. an easy drive through the north bay and slight build for the walnut creek interchange. move your map down and looking over towards san francisco where southbound 101 a major issue and a crash at 280. it sounds like we at least have one lane blocked and maybe not much more than that and south 101 slow towards 280 because of that crash and the rest of the commute into the city moves very well. we'll track that. meanwhile, we'll zoom out and show you build for hayward and the nimitz and typical there and same thing for 680 through the tri-valley and look at palo alto easy drive northbound and southbound an easy drive there folks getting on at university heading into the south bay with no real drama, guys. back to you.

people dead with two attackers. police in the east bay are on the look out for a man they're calling a serial armed rob and his latest target was a walnut creek 7-eleven just hours a. >> bob redell is live in walnut creek this morning with the image of the man police are searching for. bob? >> good morning to you, laura and scott. what has walnut creek police concerned is they believe the man who held up this 7-eleven is the same man responsible for hitting up other businesses in san leandro, walnut creek and redwood city. the man entered the store and displayed a silver handgun to the employee and robbed the cash register and took off on foot. walnut creek police say they arrived within a mant and set up a perimeter and a canine did catch a scent but never caught the suspect. they believe this robser the same man who robbed a walnut creek gas station last week. a man in an old style ski mask

and then two more surveillance images taken the next morning. from last thursday morning from the robbery of a valero gas station in san leandro. they believe this is the same man responsible for four armed robberies and two in walnut creek and one in redwood city. the description of the man, he's possibly asian and 5'6", again, wearing a black mask. all three police aegencies are working together. they want to catch this guy. their fear is that he might turn violen violent. happening today, we're going to be in court when that grandmother accused of drowning one of her grandchildren will be arraigned. hughes confessed to the crime and investigators have not revealed a motive, but they say she intentionally drowned her 4-year-old grandson last week and two other grandchildren were in the house at the time and they were not hurt. east bay teacher is facing abuse charges this morning for an alleged assault on a special education student. >> kris sanchez tracking the

story from our newsroom. this video just hard to watch. >> hard to watch and actually hard to see a bit because we blurred the faces of the students to protect their identity, but in that video, we can see the teacher's aide striking the child in the face. pinning the 9-year-old oakland boy and putting her hands on him as he is in a desk, as well. saw her throwing an icy drink at him. of antioch was arrested on charges of felony child abuse and according to the "contra costa times" antioch police got the video from the friend of an employee of that school. the mother of another 5-year-old boy at that school is also outraged. >> hit way too close to home and every parents' worst nightmare. >> "we immediately suspended the staff involved, called children and family services and notified antioch police." the statement also claims that the 9-year-old boy in the video returned to school unharmed, at
