instrumental in the capture. the most wanted drug lord in the world was paraded in front of cameras in handcuffs. joaquin guzman captured in a dramatic early morning raid. mexico's attorney general saying the drug boss was tracked down because he was trying to make a biopic and people were communicating were actors and producers. authorities gotten a tip that guzman and others were hiding in the town of los mochis. in the town of sinaloa. five other suspects were killed. six arrested and a mexican marine injured in a bloody shootout. mexico's president enrique pena nieto called it a victory for the rule of law. el chapo's daring escape in july from a maximum security prison

was a huge embarrassment for the mexican government. he disappeared through a sophisticated tunnel complete with electricity and motorcycle. >> to get any credibility, nieto had to capture el chapo. >> reporter: will he remain in mexico or be extradited in the u.s.? >> mexican legal process tends to be kind of slow. it is a good likelihood he will be extradited. >> reporter: after flown by navy helicopter, el chapo is waking up in the same prison he escaped from. authorities say the raid also captured el cholo, el chapo's right hand man also on the run. investigators seized an arsenal, rocket launchers and armored vehicles. erica. >> gabe, thank you.

police in the nation's biggest cities this morning on heightened alert following the ambush of the officer in philadelphia. the suspect now in custody telling police he was defending islam when he attacked the officer. nbc's steve paterson in philly for husbaus. >> reporter: good morning, jeff. we are learning more about the man accused of shooting the police officer. he said he did it in the name of islam. people who know him better here are painting a different picture. it is chilling video. surveillance capturing a moment the gunman opened fire on the philadelphia police officer in an unprovoked attack at point blank range shooting at least 11 times. >> i'm shot. >> reporter: 33-year-old police officer jesse hartnett was hit three times in the arm. as the gunman ran away, he kept shooting. the officer managed to follow

and returned fire. >> i do have a male in custody. >> reporter: police captured the suspect, 30-year-old edward archer. he confessed saying it was inspired by islam. archer pledged allegiance to the islamic state. friday night, federal investigators scoured homes linked to archer around philadelphia. carrying boxes of evidence away. some area neighbors were stunned to learn that archer is a suspect. >> sometimes he would play with the kids. he might play football. >> reporter: archer has prior convictions on simple assault and firearms charges. law enforcement say the fbi is looking into his phone and computer records and at trips to saudi arabia in 2011 and egypt in 2012. there's nothing to suggest that travel was terror related. according to his mother, archer had been hearing voices. attorney doug dolfman

represented him in 2013. >> he was impulsive and paranoid. >> reporter: officer hartnett is a five-year veteran of the philly pd who also served in the coast guard. >> this is astonishing that he was able to escape it. >> reporter: ironically the weapon used to shoot officer hartnett was registered to a philadelphia police officer. stolen in 2013. hartnett remains in the hospital. he is expected to fully recover likely after more surgery. >> our thoughts with the officer and his family. >> shawn henry is the former assistant of the fbi. he joins us this morning. shawn, always good to have you with us. give us a sense what investigators are looking at based on what steve laid out for us. >> we hear he was isis inspired. he said he did this in support of the islamic state. investigators absolutely want to see if there is any riptide to

isis. the fact he traveled to saudi arabia and egypt is a red flag. it is not a smoking gun. it is an area the law enforcement will work with the agencies in both countries to see why he was there and who he met with, et cetera. we saw the evidence taken out of the residence. they will be looking at the electronic devices and looking to exploit the digital media to see who he contacted. they want to see if there was a conspiracy or if this was just the efforts of one particular individual. >> isis as we know in terms of p propaganda is standing out. are they particularly going after vulnerable people. the picture painted of the man suggests he may have been vulnerable. >> isis is talking about targeting police officers and military for a long time. they are seeing law enforcement

as instruments of the government. from the terrorists' per spspe e perspective, it is important to strikeout against the government. they are seen as protectors of the innocent. that is the inspiration between isis and the attacks. law enforcement has been targeted for a long time by a lot of agencies over many years. they are absolutely aware of this rhetoric. they aware of isis objectives. they will be working very strongly coming together, state, local, federal agencies to make sure they have enough intelligence to protect officers on the streets and protect citizens. >> shawn henry, appreciate it. thank you. two iraqi immigrants arrested here on terror charges this week appeared in court on friday. their arrests along with the philadelphia shooting, a big topic of discussion among the republican candidates for president.

nbc's kacie hunt on the trail for us in columbia, south carolina. kacie, good morning. >> reporter: jeff, good morning. these are contributing to a climate of fear with americans listing security and terrorism the top concerns for 2016. that is playing out on the campaign trail. >> they are all saying. >> reporter: two terror related arrests putting national security front and center in the gop race. >> have you seen what is happening in the country? we have a president that doesn't even want to talk about what's really happening. we have to find out what the hell is going on. >> reporter: trump has called for a temporary ban on muslims entering america. drawing protesters at the friday night rally, including one woman wearing a head scarf. they were all escorted out. >> we will knock the [ bleep ] out of isis. >> reporter: campaigning in iowa, ted cruz claiming the two

men is blaming for letting them in. >> they came in through the vetting process. >> reporter: adding to concerns, the man who shot a police officer in philadelphia, police said, pledged allegiance to isis. >> we need a president who is clear and steely eyed and understands the danger we face. >> the simple fact is we are living in dangerous times. >> reporter: these republicans are all trying to make the case they are tougher on terror than democrat hillary clinton. who cruz says has been lying about the attacks in benghazi, libya, that killed four americans when she was secretary of state. >> in my house, if my daughter, the 5-year-old, says something she knows to be false, she gets a spanking. well, in america, the voters have a way of administering a spanking. >> reporter: no response to that yet from the hillary clinton campaign.

lake-effect snow will kick in. we will have areas of heavy snow through chicago and up through michigan. this is through the today with the snow winding down early sunday. heavy rain makes its way into the northeast. we could see 1 to 2 inches of rain in new york city and new england. jackpot for snowfall is about 8 to 12 inches in northern michigan. chicago could have 2 to 4 inches. we also have playoff football beginning today. the steelers and bengals. showers likely. rainy and temperatures about 53 degrees. in texas, a nice day, i think the game is at 4:15 in houston. fair good morning, i'm meteorologist keri hall we have rain moving across the bay area. a lot has shifted off to the east. we'll see scattered showers as we go through the day. the wet roads may cause a few travel problems as you get out for your saturday activities.

ticket this morning. we want to begin with the power ball frenzy we can't stop talking about. reaching a fever pitch as we said the largest jackpot ever. $800 million is up for grabs. kristen dahlgren is in line about to buy more tickets. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: i'm going to be broke at the end of this day. hopefully i do win. now is a good time to buy. no line right now. we have seen people come in all morning. i haven't seen anyone come in for coffee and not ask for a ticket as well. lottery officials don't know what to expect. have never seen a number this high. it could go up depending on how ticket sales are today. we have seen record sales so far. lines dozens deep in places. we talked earlier. some places are actually running out of the paper to run the tickets because we're seeing so many people in here. this is exactly what lottery officials wanted when they lowered the odds of winning power ball back in october. they added a few extra numbers

so it went from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 292 million chances to win. so really long odds. we've talked about it. you have a greater chance of being killed by an asteroid, but that isn't stopping people. they are still out here buying. lottery officials say about 65% of the possible number combinations will have been bout by the draws. that is a greater than 50% chance somebody wins. everyone says why not buy every combination of the numbers that would cost you $584 million. if you took the lump sum payout, you wouldn't be ahead. if nobody wins tonight, think about this. it is going to go up over a billion dollars. think about the frenzy then, guys. >> yes. if we think this is a frenzy, i can't even imagine. thanks. >> and the odds are so interesting. you have more of a chance of being in the nba, being the president of the united states. which is 1 in 10 million.

who knew it was that low. you, too, could be president of the united states. and as we wait to see who the next winner is, hard to forget those who have won big already only to lose it all again. we've heard that story over and over again. but there are success stories out there of people who have hit the jackpot and done well with it. adam couperstein has more on that. it doesn't take much to convince me you could do well with this money. >> reporter: no, jeff. there's many in line here since they opened the doors. those odds are slim. 1 in 292 million. some people win the big jackpot and some spend the money wisely. others aren't quite as lucky. many hope $2 will be the gateway to their dreams. >> i'm sure i'd move somewhere else. >> pay my bills. pay my house. >> reporter: but for some who win it big, winning the lottery could be a nightmare.

oregon, zoo have infected at least seven employees. the outbreak was reported by the centers for disease control. about 5% of the captive asian elephants in this country are believed to have tuberculosis. finally, as if the latest "star wars" film could get any bigger, it's just now opening in one of the world's biggest markets. china. it is expected to take in more than $150 million in its opening weekend. even before they felt the force in china, the film had already made more than $1 billion around the world. $2 million of that is dylan and her husband. >> how many times have you seen it? >> i've seen it twice. i was going to go a third time. but still it's going to happen. later today. >> probably time for the weather. >> i love it. it's a good movie. but are you ready for cold? like cold cold. we are looking at the arctic air to work in from the north.

we'll see some of the coldest air we've seen in a long time. we are looking at not just the cold but also a bit of snow. especially through central and northern new england. into tuesday and wednesday, quick clipper system that's going to race through. minor accumulations. then we're going to watch this bigger storm. thursday and friday we're looking at some wet weather along the coast. this could develop into a storm that maybe hugs the coast and could bring us maybe significant snowfall. but it does also indicate that some of the models have been going farther out to sea. something worth watching. today, though, we've got snow expected to move through st. louis. chicago could get about 2 to 4 inches of snow on the eastern side of this frontal system, it's heavier rain along the coast. this will work its way up through the tennessee and ohio river valleys. and up into the mid-atlantic as we go into sunday. out west we're still looking at the crazy big waves. we had 60 foot waves off the coast. that will continue to make its way in as we go into
