this is the kind of weather we will see all throughout the day. you can see the cluster of the clouds to the left of your screen. that's the main storm system that has yet to work its way into the bay area. we start out with light rain. it gets a little bit heavier as we go through some parts of the morning. most of us only seeing light showers at this point. and expect that to continue all throughout the day. this is a look at the rain timeline and the future cast shows the radar could show the spotty rain throughout the morning. early afternoon and most likely for some parts of the bay area into this evening until it clears out and we will have a beautiful clear sunday. i'll detail that. and the next storm system that will be approaching coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> a lot to keep track of. you can stay up to date with the weather conditions with downloading the nbc bay area app. click on the weather tab to find the live doppler radar. download the app from the apple

app store or google play for android devices. super bowl 50 is less than a month away, and controversy already is brewing. it's surrounding advertising. oracle is putting up a massive 18 story sign on a large building it owns in san jose. it's just self-promotion ahead of the game. the city says it's illegal because they never applied for a permit. the they could face fines of $2,500 a day. the san jose downtown association tells us these types of ads should be happening year round. city leaders are considering allowing it for now. >> we have an opportunity with the super bowl in town, a lot of eyes in san jose. and oracle certainly a prominent company. but we can't pick and choose companies or signs. we have to have a consistent approach. >> the city council could make a vote on changing city policy in about two weeks so that silicon

valley companies can show off. parts of downtown and the embarcadero will soon be closed as work begins for the fan experience joan. that's where the big presuper bowl parties will be held. about a million people are expected to attend the free week long event. the official fan zone is not yet under construction. tlf are traffic controls on steward street this weekend. >> the party sounds great. that's going to cause substantial traffic. it's like, some kind of cruel torture trying to get through those streets. >> southbound embarcadero will be off of limits from washington to mission. public transit will be impacted. fline trolleys will be replaced by buses. the count down continues kickoff is in 29 days. stay with nbc bay area for complete coverage as the super bowl approaches. to other news now, we have

new details about a deadly shooting in the south bay. 25-year-old michael malone is in the santa clara county main jail this morning. san jose police say he shot and killed a man thursday night in east san jose behind a golf course. investigators did not reveal a motive. the victim was a san jose man, his identity has not been released. el chapo has been captured again. the mexican drug kingpin el chapo guzman was arrested in a violent raid. he was marched to a waiting helicopter. he had been on the run after he escaped from prison six months ago. he was recaptured early yesterday morning by mexican marines, u.s. marshals. he could be tried in the u.s. but that process could take months. guilty on all 162 charges.

raymond chow is off to prison once again, possibly for the rest of his life after two days of deliberations, the san francisco jury found chow guilty on all charges, including racketeering and ordering the murders of two rival gangsters. the prosecution's star witness an undercover fbi agent who formed a relationship with chow. some prison inmates also testified against him. >> five cooperating witnesses, informants of the lowest possible moral caliber combined in effort to free themselves and convicted from our perspective, an innocent person. >> chow's lawyer called the verdict outrageous and vows to tupeal to appeal it. he'll be sentenced in march. and that was a message for

the mayor from protesters on his big day as san francisco mayor ed lee was being inaugurated to a second term. protesters continue to push for the ousting of the city's police chief. they're angry over the police shooting and killing of mario woods last month. now to a major milestone for women in uniform. san francisco's first female sheriff vicky hennessy was sworn in yesterday and doing the honors? san francisco's first female mayor. senator dianne feinstein. hennessy receives a standing ovation at city hall. the new sheriff has worked in the police department for nearly 40 years and was california's first first female captain. twitter and facebook are among the tech giants under pressure to stop terrorists from commuting and recruiting on their websites. senior white house officials and top silicon valley companies are in talks on how to prevent that. they held a closed door meeting yesterday in san jose.

their goal is to stop terrorists from using the internet and social media to spread their message. it's not that easy. it could violate the first amendment. >> when you look at the world as a social network, a large global network there's plenty that can be done. but the companies are right in making sure to not just open themselves up and say, yeah, sure take whatever you want. >> some participants tell us yesterday's meeting was a good start. representatives from apple google, facebook and twitter were at that private meeting. new this morning, police are looking for the man who held up a mini mart in menlo park before 10:00 last night in unincorporated west menlo park not far from highway 280. the san mateo county sheriff's office demanded money before he ran away. they have not made any arrests.

pavement in downtown san jose. much of the bay area looking the same as you head out the door this morning. happening today, expect large crowds in daily city for the crossroads of the west gun show at the cow palace. we have video of the traveling event from last year. we're told crowds have doubled in size since the paris and san bernardino massacres. in the wake of the recent tragedies the show's founder says he's seen a surge in gun sales. it will be happening today and tomorrow. an 8th grader at a catholic school in san francisco might miss out on picres because of his mustache. his mom says it's unfair. the archdiocese says boys must be clean shaven at all times. >> reporter: for 14-year-old julio, his mustach isn't about scoring points. >> we don't shave until we're

welcome back to you. this is a live look at san francisco, the eastern span of the bay bridge there. and facing san francisco on a dreary morning it is raining and much of the bay area, some of you are drying out but your pavement is wet. bundle up as you head out this morning. it's the biggest tech conference in the world. it's where tens of thousands of bay area techies went to peek into the future. scott budman was among them and shared some of the highlights. >> reporter: it's the show that keeps on growing. close to 170,000 people in las

vegas this week for the consumer electronics show as it wraps up. here's a look at some of what we saw. it's still huge. in fact, the consumer electronics show takes up 35 football fields, with just about every square foot taken up by gadgets. and there are 1.9 million square feet worth of space here, the most ever for ces. 3,200 companies have come to las vegas from all over the world to show off their products. with somewhere close to 140,000 of us here to test those products out. by the way, that's three people for every single slot machine that you'll find in vegas. if you're wondering how we all stay energized ces will serve up to 17,000 cups of coffee this week. if you were to drink one cup of

is set to arrive on wednesday with high winds and some heavy rain. so this one moving through, the fourth storm system of the week is now moving some of the rain off to the east. we are seeing some dry spots and a chance to let that water soak in. by 9:00 we'll have some more waves of rain moving in from the west. and it's very hit or miss. not all of us will be seeing the rain at the same time. into the evening, spotty light rain, also as the sun sets we may see the sun peeking out. it's 50 in san carlos, san francisco. oakland, 59. so it's cool to start out the day. we're looking at highs that will be reaching into the mid to upper 50s. low 50s in the north bay where the rain may be lingering a little bit longer. we have two storm systems moving through. this is the first one, here's the one we're expecting on monday. so with this, it stays pretty wet. as all of the moisture continues to stream in from some very warm

pacific waters. the rain stays with us until dinnertime. later on as you head out you should be clear of the rain and we're headlining into a bright beautiful sunday as the temperatures warm up. a look at how much rain we're expecting today. most of us getting .25 of an inch, maybe a little bit higher in a few spots. heading over to the sierra, it's snowing and there may be chain controls up as the roads may be slick and hasserdize. the snowfall that we're expecting there, not really heavy, maybe one to four inches of additional snow we've seen from the past 24 hours. more storms ahead once again. here's the way it plays out on the computer models. some of the way moving through on monday morning. it should be out of here by the afternoon. and then another round once again, this may be the stronger one that moves in on wednesday. we'll talk more about that and another look at the microclimate forecast is coming up in a few minutes.

>> this is the rain we need, it comes, leaves and comes back. still raining in the north bay and san francisco. temperatures are in the upper 40s to lower 50s. it will warm up today to 57 degrees in the south bay. 51 in the north bay. and 55 in san francisco and the peninsula. we will peeks of sun. here's the radar, we are tracking the fourth storm system of the week. you can see the first wave of rain has already passed most of us. we're just seeing the clouds linger, we may get a little bit of sun here and there. there is more rain to come. i'll detail that and what else to expect as we head into the next several days. >> more rain to come. stay tuned, kari, thanks. as kari just said another storm is making its way through the bay area. so far el nino has brought a lot of rain and lots of problems. that includes closures throughout the golden gate recreation area.

interview. >> reporter: assistant chief eddie garcia met with the independent police auditor, police watch dog. he worked his way up through the ranks. now garcia is about to become the city's top cop. >> first excitement. we're coming into a lot of opportunities here at this department. and we have a lot of work to do. >> reporter: that involves rebuilding the force, increasing morale and bringing back to san jose the coveted title it lost over the last few years. >> strive to be the safest largest city again together. that's what the men and women of this department, the poa, city hall and the community. we're going to do it. >> reporter: he says he'll work to get more cadets to join the dwindling academy and work to bring back the officers who left the force out of frustration over pay and benefits. >> to poach them away from other agencies but to give them an opportunity to come back home.

>> reporter: garcia says he will continue wearing the three stars of the assistant chief. but perhaps in a vote of confidence the city manager's office says there is no national search underway to look for a permanent chief. it wants to see how garcia performed. garcia in return says once he has more cops, he plans to have his officers get out of their patrol cars. >> residents can't see a police officer in times of crisis. they need to see an officer walking on a park on a sunday. walking through their neighborhoods with a smile on their faces and not just when they call 911. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. new this morning, police are looking for the man who held up a mini mart in menlo park. it happened just before 10:00 last night at the country corner liquor store. that's in unincorporated west menlo park not far from highway 280. the sheriff's office says the man walked in with a haundgon and demanded money before he ran

the warriors race towards history, hit the road with a trip to the pacific northwest. the doves look to improve on their 33-2 record. golden state and portland to face the blazers. thompson was blazing with 19 points in the first quarter alone. he ended up with a team high 36 on the night. the warriors controlled this from the start. steph curry provided the highlight of the game, with this no pass. rich rushed in with 20 points. the doves cruise to 128-108 win. >> the team we have is amazing. we've got a lot of weapons out there. everybody can score and put the ball in the basket at a high level. >> to football now, according to a report by mercury news columnist former raiders head coach and current bengals offensive coordinator hugh jackson is the clear frontrunner for the head coach.

kira/cu much more ahead on today good saturday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we start out with some raindrops. and some times we'll be taking a break. still slick roads and scatters rain will continue as we go through the day. we're looking at another round of rain, mainly light rain early on monday. on wednesday, a stronger storm will be moving in. we'll talk about all of that. let's take a look at the fourth storm system of the week. it's covering the entire state with a little bit of light rain. we're looking at swirls further off to the west that will be working its way in as we go through the day.

still expecting more waves of light rain. moisture moving in and some of the rain has moved off to the east. we're taking a little bit of a break. it's 49 in oakland. santa rosa, 47. san francisco, 50. it's mild temperatures. a look at how much rain we've had already in some spots. just some trace amounts up to .10 in some areas. san francisco mostly .10 of an inch around forest hill. and then as we go to the east bay, lighter amounts. you haven't seen the rain as long and it has been fizzling out as it moves east. also across the peninsula barely getting enough rain in that rainfall bucket. it's good news we still have more rain on the way. in the south bay, up to .01 of an inch. not measuring much there. once again scattered showers throughout the morning and early afternoon. should be tapering off later on this evening.

this is the possibility of having a female president for the first time in our lives. i want him to experience the excitement. >> reporter: a political science professor says clinton knows she's in friendly territory and can raise a lot of money for what promises to be a tough campaign. >> this is her campaign to lose. there's never been a more qualified candidate in american history. >> reporter: the lieutenant governor was among those who brought their families to the event. dubbed the children's town hall. he predicts she'll win her way back to the white house. >> the next president is not going to be donald trump. sorry, mr. trump. i have every confidence it will be hillary clinton. >> reporter: jodi hernhorn, nbc bay area news. and we're keeping a close eye on the race to the presidency. a field poll shows clinton has the most support in california. 46% of likely democratic voters

tie. betty has two different colors eyes. they're the cutest little things. can you start telling me a little bit about reto? >> he's a one-year-old chihuahua mix. he hasn't been at the shelter too long, a couple weeks down at the shelter. he's super sweet. really friendly. he's the best. >> he is really sweet. sometimes chihuahuas can be known to be quite hyper. he's really calm. >> he's very calm for being so young, yeah. >> he is really sweet. and marcy could you tell me a little bit about betty and her beautiful eyes. >> she's a beagle chihuahua mix. she's two years old. got a blue and brown eye. and also very sweet. >> very sweet. both of them could go to any home. >> any home. >> when you think about it, and they're both -- the shelter you take care of their spaying and neutering. >> microchipped and they have their shots. >> if you want to meet them today, it there is a 2016 bay area pet expo going on today and
