in. >> good morning. we are waking up to a little bit of drizzle this morning. keep the umbrellas handy and mike ran into some, but not enough to turn on the windshield wipers. run into drizzle from time to time as the cold front makes its way through the region. keep clouds in place throughout the day. started off right near 50 degrees and round off the day right near 60 and keep those umbrellas handy. mike, you got something going on on b.a.r.t. this morning. >> right. this little mist you talked about which wasn't a big deal yet. looking at the downtown berkeley station for the b.a.r.t. station and police activity, this is not the same thing as the deadly shooting we're talking about. but that station reopened also in the last 90 seconds and trains are now restoring back on to time and about a dozen trains right now. not a big deal so far. the roadways okay and the green highlighted shows you where you might get more mist and another

issue on the bay bridge, possibly a disabled big rig. we'll check on that and we'll check for slowing. now to a story we're all talk about this morning. david bowie a visionary where a career that spanned five decades died after a long battle with cancer. his death comes just days after he released his 25th studio album. bowie's first hit rose to the top of the english charts in 1969. a long stream of top ten songs and albums followed. bowie marched from persona to persona and then diamond dog and then completely leaving them behind at the experience with musical style. his refusal to play old hits in an interview in 2003. >> it's a struggle to understand how i am no longer 20. i don't know nobody else this has ever happened to. most people get to 20 and then they stay 20.

killer and they still are now. other passengers tried to help out. witnesses say someone started cpr on the victim. others found nurses in the crowd and tried to shield upset riders. >> someone next to me was sort of diving over me because i was on the aisle seat and i didn't really hear the shots y don't think, i don't really know. it was just so quick. i sort of got down, what the heck is going on? >> that's brad. he recorded the frightening and confusing situation in the train car. b.a.r.t. police are checking surveillance tape and still interviewing witnesses. jewelry and electronics stolen from home in the east bay. the least of the homeowner's worries. the most prized possession taken was the one on four legs. this purebred just purchased

brief shower in sunnyvale and same deal for san mateo and san francisco mid-50s and same for the north bay. the widespread showers and 55 for santa rosa and mostly cloudy skies for the tri-valley. 55 for san ramon. how are those roads looking? >> right there the flashing lights, you just catch that. that is a traffic break. see all these cars bakd up westbound across the bay bridge and under the tower and into treasure island where there were reports of a semi truck that busted up, two tires. hopefully get that truck to the shoulder. give you information as chp gives us an update. the rest of your bay moves very well. speed sensors not slowing anywhere else. back to you. glad you bring that up, mike. our nbc bay area is a great way to stay up to date. scott budman shows us how it works. >> it's easy to get connected to the weather outside by going inside on your smartphone.

an investigative unit exclusive. one of the pay area airport the number of staffing levels last spring. >> at the time our team found only four firefighters work at any given shift at san manetta international airport. stephen stock joins us with his follow up investigation. >> critics say it is not enough. just months after our first story aired last year. san jose city council provided more money to upgrade. they added two more firefighters per shift and another aircraft fi firefighting truck. they were forced to do that under faa requirements because so many larger airplanes are now using sjc and that tit is now considered an index d airport.

because of that, more firefighters and more trucks must be on duty at all times. even so aviation fighting experts who teach this specialty around the world tell me they worry that the increased staffing is still not enough to ensure safety in the rare event of a crash out at sjc. we also obtained e-mails from delta airlines expressing similar concerns over the staffing. delta even paid to provide extra firefighters to be on duty before the airline would land here with a chartered 747 airplane. san jose airport officials insist the firefiring capability is adequate and that the air field is safe. the faa tells us it's satisfied that sjc meets minimum standards it has set for all airports this size. you can see more on our story and all the information on our website, just go to nbcbayarea.com. i'm stephen stock, now back to

still trying to clean up the mess. >> i was trying to take care of him. >> it's monday. it's aurally. >> i'm going to check on the bay bridge. >> okay. >> well, at least the weather is good. we have some showers, but it's all good. >> cold front but it's not that cold. >> not a whole lot of rain. as you get going outside. not talking about canceling your plans and don't have to worry about a bad hair day. we have a little more humidity in the air. not an all-day rain and what we see fall from the sky, it is going to be light. not going to be that messy, especially considering we're starting off our monday with just a little bit of rain. there's our shots of san jose. clouds in place and no rain on the lens there and, again, that's what we're tracking. very light showers and not even really enough to measure any of that across parts of the south bay. let's look at the rest of the bay area and you can see temperatures in the 50s. san francisco, north bay, that's where we can have the showers and if we can show you what is happening and unless you get

beat in the north bay. 55 for san francisco and 58 for the east bay and the tri-valley mostly cloudy skies, 55 there and for the south bay looking at temperatures right near 58 degrees. two storm systems in the future, at least for the immediate future. another one right on its heels and that one will move through for wednesday and we'll talk more about that for a little while. time out the system moving through right now and the cloud cover all day long and the showers start to become wildly scattered by 2:00 this afternoon. san francisco, the coastline and the north bay. you'll see some showers around then. and then once we get towards the eepg hours, things do start to clear out and make room for that next storm. as far as rainfall amounts for today. a lot of goose eggs. the rain where it will fall it will be measurable up towards san francisco in the north bay. that's where i think we'll see a tenth of an inch or less. wednesday' storm and look at all the colors on the radar. pretty big storm system for wednesday morning and move through and bring sierra snow,

as well. on the heels of that one, another storm system comes in on friday and even for friday and saturday, i don't think we'll notice much of a break and that will mean for more rain. we're talking about the potential aof 2.5 to 4 inches o rain. we're talking about a couple inches of rain there. mike, how do the roads look right now? >> the roads are looking all right, anthony. we're looking at the bay bridge. this is the san francisco side and this traffic was held up for about four minutes westbound. looks like we have a slow, steady stream coming across and let's look on the other side where we showed from emoryville jammed up around this bend and one lane blocked and chp hasn't updated us in the last 90 seconds because they're working on this clearing and the tire tread from the roadway. your slow drive right there at the toll plaza from the incline up towards treasure island. the rest of your approach looking so far. meanwhile, better news as we

on friday the dow falling 167 points to 16346. the nasdaq losing 45 to 4644. tesla has equipped most of its cars with a self-parking feature and you don't have to be behind the wheel. the electric carmaker said it is best for people trying to get into tight spaces and the car must be lined up 33 feet of the space. the vehicle can also back out of a space and parallel park. meanwhile, ford will launch a smartphone app in april to help people with basic services such as finding a parking space called ford path that will provide live assistance via voice or chat and users can rent out their car while on a trip and offer rewards programs with partners including mcdonald's and 7-eleven and it can be used by anyone and offer more benefits to ford car and truck owners. sam and laura, back over to you. >> i totally thought that landon was partial to scott mcgrew, but

"the chronicle" david compos will plan to announce new legislation tomorrow. any city building that has single stall restrooms to provide at least one to all genders. multi-stall restrooms would not be required to change. the measure would also require city-owned building and multi-stall bathrooms to designate one as gender neutral. happening later today, major riff among california teachers makes its way to the nation's highest court. supreme court justices are set to hear arguments on the efforts by some teachers to defect altogether from one of the leading unions. teachers are required to pay a minimum of $400 a year to state and local unions fair share fee,

but they can already opt on higher payments. some believe a high court ruling could cause unions to crumple entirely. ten-figure bank accounts as in $1.3 billion. that's the estimated world record jackpot for this wednesday's powerball drawing. this after no one matched all six numbers in last saturday's draw. i think that shows you how hard it is. come on. the powerball jackpot has grown to unpres dchcedented highs eve since the start of november. when it started at a million dollars. when no one took home that jackpot on saturday. someone in fremont got a great consulation prize a 7-eleven store there sold a ticket matching five of six numbers and the payout was around $780,000. >> i think i matched two or three. >> your odds of matching five are, what?

50s. mike, any better on that bay bridge right now? >> it's getting better. incline look towards that curve and traffic now visibly moving and space in between the cars as you're approaching the turn, the tower and the treasure island tunnel where they had that rig. now, as we look at the map, we're recovering from that traffic break coming across the span. the maps will show you the speed sensors going from red to orange right there in the middle of your screen and no other problems, although west 80 for hercules and word of a disabled vehicle one that might be in lane. no showing has shown up over the last few. north 580 at flin and look like that might have removed that disabled vehicle from the roadway. back to you. mike, big news in the political world. now to decision 2016. a new poll out this morning showing ted cruz out ahead of donald trump. but only in iowa. it's the first date, of course, to weigh in on a presidential primary season. the iowa caucuses only three

weeks away. in the next state, new hampshire, trump is far out ahead of ted cruz. senator marco rubio comes in second in new hampshire but still far behind trump. as for the democratic side of things. hillary clinton in a statistical dead heat with bernie sanders in both states. this as the two of them talk of their abilities to stand up to the gun lobby. >> it's the only industry in our country where we have given that kind of carte blanche to do whatever you want to do with no fear of legal consequences. >> when gun manufacturers, for example, are selling guns into an area and know that those guns are going into the hands of criminals, absolutely. those gun manufacturers should be held aebccountable. >> clinton picked up a key endorsement winning support of gabby giffords and her astronaut husband. the oscars now undoubtedly has a frontrunner after three
