is our partnership with habitat for humanity. pg&e is committed to clean energy and part of that commitment our mission is to build homes, community and hope. our homeowners are low-income families, so the ability for them to have lower energy cost is wonderful. we have been able to provide about 600 families with solar on their homes. that's over nine and a half million dollars of investment by pg&e,
9:34 pm
and that allows us to provide clean energy for everyone here. it's been a great partnership. together, we're building a better california. michael: george went to poly, right down the street. he sold--he used to sell hot dogs and cokes at kezar during the games. i mean, he--you know, he grew up with all of this.
9:35 pm
john: after a sunday victory, he would walk around the building and congratulate the secretaries, the maintenance man, the janitor, the equipment guy. i mean, he was, "this is us. this is our share." jerry: and george seifert, he was one of those guys that was--he was a quiet guy, but very superstitious. there were certain things he wouldn't do. he always had this sweater that he would wear, like, on game day. and he also--he would not walk across the 49ers logo. every game--so, every day before practice, you know, the guys, we always had bets, you know? and you know, we would, you know, try to bet if he was gonna walk across the logo. he would head directly for that logo, then all of a sudden, he
9:36 pm
would just make a right or a left. narrator: the path to victory and super bowl xxiv, however, was straight ahead. the 49ers demolished denver under the superdome, 55 to 10. the repeat was complete. another vince lombardi trophy, the team's 4th in 9 years, was now bay area bound. as the decade of dominance came to a close, the 49ers were at a crossroads, forced to make difficult decisions, letting go of key players. ronnie: i know that it was happening, but i also knew that it was the right thing if you wanted to continue to have what he wanted to have, and that was winning at a certain level.
9:37 pm
narrator: in 1993, joe montana was traded for a draft pick. eddie: i don't think i'll ever have a relationship with anybody, no matter how long i own this team, which is gonna be a long time, that i have with joe montana. narrator: in 1994, after waiting for years, 33-year-old quarterback steve young finally had his chance on the big stage. jerry: montana, he was joe cool. i mean, everything was so precise on the football field. steve young, opposite. when he first came in, he was more of a running quarterback, you know? and he was fast! he was really fast, you know? for a white boy, he was fast. announcer: and he dives. touchdown, 49ers. steve young: there was a love/hate relationship with those wheels, you know, because most of the time when i was using 'em, he'd be like, "why didn't you just throw it to me? i could've saved you all the trouble."
9:38 pm
and i learned over time he was probably right, and i tried to throw it to him more than not. narrator: at the end of the '94 season in super bowl xxix, young threw it to rice 10 times for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns, to lead the 49ers to a 49-26 victory over the san diego chargers. steve: life can be more sublime. it can be more rich. it can be more wonderful. it can be more, name it and mine is, but it isn't like that ever again. narrator: twenty super bowls have now been played since that night, but while both the raiders and the 49ers have come close to winning the bay area's eighth championship, neither has been able to reach the summit again. ronnie: when you're going for something that everybody else wants and you have to be the last to stand is really, really, really, really, really hard.
9:39 pm
narrator: the vince lombardi trophy is 22 inches tall and weighs 7 pounds. tiffany and company makes it out of sterling silver. the football on top is regulation size and filled with a tar-like substance to prevent it from being dented. thousands of men risk debilitating injury every year for a chance to hold it just one time. tom: you feel like an idiot 'cause you just look at it. that's all you wanna do is just look at it. you almost wanna take it and put it underneath your pillow and go to sleep or something. jerry: the lombardi trophy, i'll never forget it, you know. because i think when i grabbed it, i wanted to hold onto it.
9:40 pm
i didn't wanna basically pass it around to my teammates. they had to pry it out of my hands. steve: i think it's symbolic. people love to go climb everest and put a flag up to kind of memorialize the fact that, "i was here. this is my place. we came here. we did this." and i would say that it was kind of like that. ronnie: it is more than just holding it. it's just like it's just--it's like it's more than just holding your kids. you're holding it with the community. you're holding it with the bay area. the great thing is that when you do hold it, you're holding it with every person that has come to a '9er game. narrator: which is why, after super bowl xix, john mcvay was surprised at what was forgotten in the 49ers locker room at stanford stadium. john: i was just sort of milling around and seeing if there's anything left in the locker room, and there
9:41 pm
was the super bowl trophy. and the janitor says, "what do you wanna do with this?" i said, "i'll take it." so, i got the--here, the game is over, and i got the super bowl trophy. so, i wrap it up in a towel, and take it out, and put it in my trunk, and take it home. in all the hoopla, and now the symbol, it sits there all by itself, lonely self, but i took it home. male: did you think about just kinda keeping it on the shelf? john: no. no. i had to immediately find eddie debartolo and put it in his hands. ronnie: hey, it's a smart thought, 'cause just knowing what i know and knowing mr. d, he would've found it quickly. he he he, he he he. oh, smart move by john.
9:42 pm
smart move. narrator: super bowl celebrations don't stop in the locker room. they extend to the faithful and to the nation who helped will the team to victory. jerry: and that's really the reason why we play the game is for our fans. tom: it gives you a good feeling, warm, like, those warm, fuzzy feelings every time you share your moments with your fans. steve: winning league mvp, winning division titles, it doesn't bind the town the way a super bowl does. fred: to see their faces and understand that we all went through that frustration, now it's over, you know? we finally did it, you know, and it was a great sense of accomplishment by, i mean, everybody in the city. you could see it on their faces, all the players. it was fantastic.
9:43 pm
ronnie: one of the best moments of my life was in 1982, i had a lady who was in a wheelchair at de anza college. i was walking across the campus. she was sitting there, and she said, "are you ronnie lott?" i said, "yeah." she goes, "i have to tell you something. i have to tell you that you have brought so much joy. your team, the way you guys play, brings so much joy." wow. you mean you hold that? so, when you hold that trophy, you hold that. you hold her. you hold all of those people who walk up to you and tell you, "man, love the way you play.
9:44 pm
i love how you went about your craft. i love that you gave everything." [music]
9:45 pm
9:46 pm
at have the passion for football like the bay area, and in february, that passion will be on display for the world to see as the bay area plays host to super bowl 50. keith bruce: it is a cultural phenomena. some might say it's the most important 4 hours in the united states every year, based on the fact that people always know where they're gonna be on super bowl sunday. narrator: the golden anniversary will celebrate the bay area's championship tradition, while looking forward to the game's future.
9:47 pm
keith: do it in our personality, in our bay area way, which is, you know, a little more out there. it's more progressive. it's more leading edge, and we need to have some of that personality in our tone when we deliver super bowl 50. narrator: and once gone, the goal is to bring it back again as soon as possible. it is right and appropriate that the super bowl should make a home in a place which holds so much of its history. owners with vision. john: i think al, god rest his soul, i think he's one of those guys who had the magic touch. narrator: coaches with genius. jerry: bill walsh, the greatest coach ever. narrator: players with passion. ronnie: sixteen, when he ran out, he ran out. always wanted to be the best ever. narrator: and just enough nutty to keep it interesting. george: there's some other stories,
