for now, i'm chuck todd in charleston, south carolina. from all of with us, we say good night. a strong storm moving -- g problems. rain and wind -- plummeting many pas othe bay area tight. and a strong storm that is moving very much into the city right now, causing problems also in marin, talking about rain and wind, plummeting temperatures for many parts of the bay area. waves surging on the coast. conditions expected to get worse as the night continues. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. the making of a storm. heavy rain falling in many parts of the bay area. it hit the north bay first. heavy rain in marin county. on the coast, large waves crashed ashore. people across the bay area preparing for the threat of flooding.

we have team coverage of the storm and what it's expected to bring for the monday morning commute. >> right now, we're seeing an urban and small stream advisory. you can see the reason why we have the advisories going up. in the last two hours alone, more than an inch of rain has come down, the heaviest of rain offshore starts to move in. still counting in san francisco. obviously, a very rainy drive there. rainy looking from the north bay back down to san francisco. tiburon, and it's wind plus rain right now in oakland at 57 degrees. heavy rain falling, and you can see the rain across the north bay, where we still have flood watches in effect for those north bay counties. san francisco over towards oakland and heyward, watching the heavy rain there starting to reach the tri-valley now and rain dropping into san jose. you can see all this moisture being lifted up out of the subtropics aiming in on the bay area, powering up the big rainfall totals. the areas in purple and red in

the hill tops and santa cruz mountains could see 2 to 4 inches of rain. as we head to tomorrow morning, where the focus turns out of the north bay to the south bay as the heavy rain shifts into san jose early tomorrow morning and another storm on the heels of this one could bring similar rain totals approaching tuesday. a look at that in the forecast in a few minutes. >> looking forward to that. also, huge waves taking a toll on the shores of pacifica. this storm here causing dangerous conditions along the coast. a high surf warning is in effect. marianne is live in pacifica tonight where we're hearing the waves are so strong they have actually taken down a retaining wall? >>a that's absolutely right. a high surf warning tonight and this is why. for the past three hours, we have watched as the huge waves have come up and over the wall. in fact, they were so strong they took out a big chunk of the wall. waves 15 to 18 feet high crashed

over this retaining wall in pacifica. a high surf advisory is in effect along the coast until 7:00 tomorrow morning. the pounding surf was strong enough to take out a section of wall and walkway on beach boulevard. crews spent the day building a makeshift wall with huge boulders to block the hole. that's welcome news for the carey family who live just a few feet away. the waves hurled sand and rocks at their home. >> the waves were crashing on the window, and it -- and it was like an earthquake. >> 9-year-old mia's family is now relying on boards and sandbags to defend against the intruding water and sand. the intensity of the surf lured many people to pacifica to check it out. and take photos. >> very dramatic. it's going to be coming over the wall pretty good. >> this is just the beginning of mother nature's show, especially with high tide continuing until 6:00 tomorrow morning.

and here on beach boulevard, the street is already starting to flood. so neighbors here have been busy putting up sandbags surrounding their homes. hoping for the best. >> marianne reporting there. we lost her at the end for technical reasons. be prepared. that is the motto for many homeowners as the el nino storms drench the bay area. some picks up free sandbags today to protect their property. christie smith is live near mill valley to give us a look at the storp preps. >> we're just experiencing a light rain right now, but it was coming down much heavier earlier. we're standing in one of those areas that's subject to flooding, especially with the high tide. people seem to be preparing for this wet weather to stick around for a while. the rain that was promised did deliver this evening in marin county after a slow start. low lying curbs are places known

to flood had help. freeways and streets were slick and wet. >> not so much their lack of experience, driving in the rain, because each year we do have some rain. it's because many people drive badly. >> 2 to 4 inches of rain expected in the north bay hills throughout overnight. earlier, a flood wautch for urbn and small streams. in napa, residents showed up at memorial stadium parking lot for sandbags. >> i have them out, but i'm getting extra to put around the house, the doors and things just in case. >> sandbags and plastic were lined up at shops near mill valley to keep the rain out. same in san anselmo. >> i put them out a couple days ago. >> they're ready out front. >> a few years, there was terrible flooding on the streets. just getting prepared. we have a gate that will go across in case the floods do come. a little preventative. >> that urban and small stream flood advisory up until 10:00

their relationship. the suspect is 26 years old, 5'11" and about 200 pounds. he should be considered violent and dangerous. the suspect was last seen driving a 2011 dark gray subaru forester. the license plate is 6 rtv 690. if you have any information about the infant or suspect's whereabouts, call 911. >> a deadly night on highway 4 in martin eslast night. a series of crashes killed a 19-year-old concord woman. the woman lost control of her mazda and hit the center guardrail. about 8:30 last night. she got out of her car before it was struck by a buick, but the impact of that crash knocked the mazda into her and she was pushed into oncoming traffic and killed. the other two drivers survived. >> another crash to tell you about. a driefr now wanted after all e allegedly causing two cars to swerve off a south bay highway. this was south of highway 87.

you can see the after effect. the cars stuck on the side of the road. the chp says the driver cut off a black lexus causing it to swerve and hit the acura. both plunged down the side of the hill where the driver who set off the chain reaction kept going. no one was hurt, but it could have ended much more tragically, as many homeless people camp out on that homeless. officers are asking anyone with information to come forward on the suspect. >> following developing news of a missing ski instructor at a popular resort near donner summit. they joined the search to find carson may, last seen on the slopes thursday afternoon. we have the latest on the rescue effort. >> a big area. and there's a lot of trees. >> multiple challenges for search and rescue crews from california to nevada as they hit the slopes looking for carson may, the biggest obstacle, slushy weather has increased avalanche danger. >> we have identified six slides

so far just today, and we believe those six slides came from a couple days go in areas we were not able to get into because of that. >> there are more than 60 members on the search and rescue mission, including law enforcement and nordic ski experts. but his cell phone ping stopped sending signals two days ago. there's no beacon now to pinpoint his location. >> this is the third year as an instructor, he had season passes here prior, so he knows how to ski and knows the area. >> they're searching inside sugar bowl's boundaries and out of bounds, using shuttles, avalanche beacons and whatever it takes. >> we're going to up here and we'll we here all night if we have to be. >> rescue experts say his best chance for survival is to build a snow cave to try to keep warm. >> it's an ongoing active search. we plan to come back tomorrow in full force and keep up. as long as we have resources,

we'll keep trying. >> this is a good day, that announcement from president obama after the release of several americans that were being held prisoners in iran. this is new video of the swiss air force jet carrying several of the americans that landed in geneva today. bay area native and washington post journalist jason rezaian is one of those released. >> jason rezaian is coming home. courageous journalist for the "washington post" who wrote about the daily lives and hopes of the iranian people. he's been held for a year and a half. he embodies the brave spirit that gives life to the freedom of the press. >> tonight, there is no word on when the americans will return to the united states. an exchange for this release, the u.s. is dropping charges against seven iranians. coming up, more on the controversial u.s. nuclear deal with iran. in the east bay, police arrested a knife-wielding suspect after a violent confrontation at a grocery

store. they took him into custody yesterday afternoon in brentwood. police say he tried to leave the store with items he hadn't paid for. they say when security guards confronted him, he pulled out a large hunting style knife and threaten eed them. no one was hurt. police caught up with him and booked him on several charges, including carrying a concealed dagger. >> moments ago, escalating attacks on the democratic debate stage. right here on nbc, how the race is now heating up before the iowa caucuses. a brand that became synonymous with elegance and apparel for men in san francisco. >> plus, remembering a san francisco fashion icon, former leaders look back on the life of wilks ashford. >> take a look at the live pictures as we take you out to pacifica. you can see the rain pounding down. pretty dangerous conditions on the coast. rob is back with another look at the forecast after the break. the debate tonight between

democratic presidential candidates hillary clinton well, the debate tonight between democratic presidential candidates hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley was at times, heated, fierce, and agreeable depending on the topics. topic ranged from gun control to wall street. on global issues, they sparred on how to confront the growing threat from isis and the civil war in syria. >> i'm very committed to both going after isis, but also supporting what secretary kerry is doing to try to move on a political diplomatic course to try to begin to slow down and hopefully end the carnage in syria which is the root of so many of the problems that we see in the region and beyond. >> to get american young men and women involved in perpetual warfare in the quagmire of syria and the middle east would be an unmitigated disaster that as

president i will do everything in my power to avoid. >> now, this was the final faceoff between democrats before the iowa caucuses, and also the very important new hampshire primary. with the democrats in a virch well dead heat, experts say tonight's debate could prove to be pivotal. >> tributes continue to pour in today for a bay area fashion icon. wills bashford died last night after a battle with cancer. he was 82 years old. in 1966, bashford opened his first clothing store, a luxury clothing store baring his name. he and his flashing clothing became fixtures in the city. willie brown recalls the moment he first met the business owner. >> i was in a couple days of his opening. i was in that store. and he thought i was a shop lifter or a competitive shopping guy. and we started our friendship from that point on. >> bashford was also very active in fund-raisers throughout the city. his bay area stores are still

open. >> spacex's rocket went up and came down, but not the way elon musk and his engineers wanted. >> and liftoff. >> it's tough to see. it was very foggy at the air force base in southern california, but it didn't stop the rocket launch from going off on time. it was a successful launch. when the rocket landed on a floating barge in the pacific, a support leg broke, and it toppled over. elon musk tweeted out this photo of the rocket booster and said, well, at least the pieces were bigger this time. the rocket sent a jason-3 satellite into orbit to monitor sea levels from space and detect el nino and la nina weather patterns. >> speaking of weather patterns, we have pin talking about it a lot tonight. a lot going on weather wise. rob has been watching all of it. we talked about everything from snow up in tahoe, a lot of people there for the three-day weekend, to down here where there's lots of rain.

>> wind and a case of lake tahoe snow at about 6500 feet. mild conditions with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s and a lot of rain across the central bay right now. lighter rain into the north bay from santa rosa to novato. from san francisco to oakland and heyward, this is where we're seeing the more substantial rain out there from the east shore freeway over to the tri-valley. you're starting to see more substantial rainfall, east of san leandro, moving slowly to the south and east, where in san jose right now, we're beginning to see some of the moderate rain trying to spill up and over the santa cruz mountains and down into fremont and san jose as the storm slowly pushes the heavier rain out of the north bay into the central bay. as we head to tomorrow morning, a lot of that heavier rain by 7:00 should be moving away from san jose. heavier rain into morgan hill and gilroy by 7:00. hour by hour with the storm, we'll be watching widespread rain throughout about 2:00 a.m., the focus shifts to the santa cruz mountains and 8:00, we're

in scattered showers. things starting to wind down. during the afternoon, a chance of isolated shower. temperatures overall staying mild. low to mid 60s around the south bay. san francisco, temperature closer to 60. for the north bay, a few lingering showers especially around the coastal hills, where the north bay hill tops you could see scattered showers even into the afternoon, and temperatures in the tri-valley tomorrow low 60s. here comes round two. and some of the latest model runs for the tuesday storm now bring in a little more rain with it, if you watched us about two hours ago, it looked like we would get an inch out of the storm. now some of the coastal hills could see another two inches out of the storm, and the main event of the tuesday storm in the morning commute through about lunch time. pretty heavy rain for the north bay hills, and then by tuesday afternoon, our skies clear as we catch another brief break, as we head to wednesday with the things changing over to drying conditions. in the high country, look at the snow totals adding up.

a winter storm warning through 10:00 tomorrow morning and tuesday's storm is going to add more to the snow pack. over the next few days, stormy weather. tonight, storm two comes in on tuesday. wednesday, we catch a bick of a break and a few showers. thursday, and then just in case you're making plans for the weekend, storm three shows up for friday into saturday. you're going to look at rain for friday, for the weekend, more scattered showers and these rain totals really adding up. as you add all three storms together, for places north of sfranl, looking at 4 to 6 inches of rain, and even the south bay pie the time we get to friday night could look at 2 to 4 inches of rain. so the rain continues to add up. this is great news for the sierra snow pack, which if you can go back in time to a year ago, 36% of average. now, 110% of average, and our seasonal rainfall totals too starting to come up. 70% to 100% of average. if you compare this january to the last significant el nino of 1998, look how the monthly average right there on the left,

only halfway through january, already passed that for santa rosa. the numbers ipgold on the right, that's what we saw in 1998. the trend we're seeing now could put us closer to the numbers on the right and move past the numbers for the month possibly by the end of next week. >> great stuff. so many people in the bay area depend on that run off from the snow melt. >> interesting to look it like that. >> netflix wants your child to start watching the series you'll see when you flip on the streaming service. plus -- >> i'm sam brock. new housing coming to oakland. a great thing, right? well, critics say it's not the right kind of housing. would the city be better served by building homes instead of apartments? that story is next on reality check. in about an hour from now,

sinkhole repairs will begin on church street in san f well, in about an hour from now, sinkhole repairs will begin on the sinkhole on church street in san francisco. we talked about it quite a bit. the work will be disrupting muni service.

crews will be working on church between 22nd and 24th streets. all service on the j church and n judah lines will be served by bus shuttals as a result of the repairs. the work is expected to last until at least tuesday. the sinkhole, somewhat famous now we have talked about it so much, is now just a sinkhole. it was first reported on new year's eve. a big headache. >> san francisco is one of the most expensive places in country to live. that has many considering a move across the bay to oakland. critics of a new project say the city may be focused on creating the wrong kinds of housing. the question is whether oakland should build more homes or apartments. sombrock has tonight's reality check. >> and so the primary motion in terms of what is noticed is adopted with a vote. >> overwhelming approval at the oakland city council last week for a new mixed use development project smack dab in the middle of the city's uptown. the project will pump out 234 new housing units.

mostly market rate, but some affordable options, too. along with retail stores. it's all walking distance to b.a.r.t. and the auto row. >> we have plenty of demand and we're trying to get more supply. this was one way to expedite the process and get developers building. >> city leaders like rachel praise the future building at 2330 webster street, part of a broader plan to carve out more room in a housing market that's squeezed residents with rising rents. the median home price in oakland has almost doubled in just five years. rents have grown by 50% in that time. >> at this point, in the affordability crisis in the bay area, all new housing is good new housing. you can certainly split hairs about the types that get built. but we're in such low supply for all housing types, that any housing is good housing. >> but a chorus of critics is singing a different tune. stoking fear that the units in

this building all one and two bedrooms are just a quick fix. they say more available housing, yes, but what happens when new younger residents want to expand and start families? trul yeah's chief economist says that's not an issue in the near term based on the data he's seeing. >> the mid-30s now is the new mid-20s for getting married and having kids. new households that move into the area probably won't be looking to move out very quickly to start families. >> he highlights another trend popping up in research. people want to be closer to work and closer to transportation. in the middle of a major city, that's achieved through denser housing. >> it promotes sprawl. where you're going to have to build somewhere else and go further out. the whole point of an urban setting is to maximize density where you have transit. that's what these are about.

>> there are down sides to development like the one approved from the broadway valdez area, too. for one, more people typically means more traffic. that's not all. >> there's a possibility that prices could rise in the area if it gentrifies. while that's good for existing homeowners, if rents always rise, that's actually not great for existing residents. >> for comparison's sake, building the same amount of housing in single family homes would require much more viable land, and it's not really available thanks to the region's fault lines and hillsides. plus, apartment complexes typically include a requirement of 15% affordable apartments. for reality check, i'm sam brock. well, netflix is zeroing in on a new target audience, and that would be families. the company says it's making a special effort to produce special programming for children and families. it's starting with the full house remake, called fuller house. >> fuller house.

>> that premieres on the 26th. netflix is offering 20 new programs in the family friendly category this year. the company says they're simply not enough of this type of programming on traditional tv right now. some people thought that spend the day cleaning birds as annual of the bird count. take a look at these children. they spent part of sunday tallying up the birds in the national wildlife refuge in fremont. they headed out to count the number and types of birds species in trees and bushes. >> the idea is to get them excited about it. and then come back together over a brown bag lunch, they'll do a tabulation celebration. and in doing that, they will decide how many total species did we count as an entire group here. >> the count gets reported to cornell university and becomes part of the database used by the government and schools across the country. good work.

right now, still tracking active weather setting up through the south bay. the santa cruz mountains, heavier rain now spilling into the south of the los altos hills, and a moisture plume that's really powering up impressive rainfall rates tonight with localized flooding under way. the latest in the forecast and what you can expect tomorrow morning coming up. >> also, the storms and rising water creating waste concerns in one coastal community. how crews plan to fix a damaged sewer line that could spill into the ocean.

coast. a live look from pacifica creati. a songtorm -- is rain and wind pounding the coast. let's take you out right now live to pacifica. you can see the heavy rainfall here, and also the pounding surf. a lot of dangerous conditions there. the storm is expected to get worse overnight. >> rob has been tracking the storm's path in our weather center and joining us now with which areas getting hit the hardest. >> over the last hour, the north bay where we saw kentfield pick

up under 2 inches of rain in two hours. more than an inch and climbic to 2 inches of rain. san francisco to arinda, a half inch of rain so far. the combination of the runoff, the high surf warning under way, and another high tide coming up for 6:00 a.m. tomorrow is the reason why we have the coastal flood warning inland across the inner bay, towards mill valley, sausalito, through 7:00 tomorrow morning. in addition to that, urban and small stream advisories through 10:00 tonight, and ongoing overnight, flash flood watches in the north bay counties, especially in lake county out along the valley fire and jerusalem fires. debris flow is possible as 2 to 4 inches of rain falls. san francisco, moderate rain, still 57 degrees outside. mild temperatures, and in the sierra, high snow levels. the rain there, san francisco to oakland. rain around santa rosa right now, but the heavier rain beginning to shift to the south. the progression here over night

will take more of the substantial rain and push it to the central and south bay locations as we approach 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. you see the totals adding up. even the lowlands picking up 1 to 2 inches of rain by tomorrow morning. the focus for tomorrow morning if you're out and about 7:00, still rain, heavy at times south of san jose. meanwhile, the north bay catches a break before the next storm arrives as we move into tuesday. a look at that storm timeline in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks very much. look forward to that. >> the el nino storms are whipping up massive waves, eating away at the coastline. in half moon bay, a sewer line is starting to be exposed, raising worries that waste could go to the ocean. they're trying to fix the problem. they want to add large boulders along the wall in the area to stop the erosion from spreading. about three feet of the sea wall crumbled just this week. nearby homeowners hope a solution comes sooner rather than later.

>> they could create an immense travesty in environmental pollution. >> the county works on a long-term solution, they plan to put large boulders along the beach to take the waves' energy away. if you want to stay up to date, a great way to track the storms is our free nbc bay area app. click on the weather tab to find the live doppler radar. you can download it in the apple app store or google play. >> and an update on breaking news, an amber alert canceled. a missing 1-year-old boy has been found safe and sound. now there's a search for the boy's father. this started earlier today when police were called to a hombecause of a domestic disturbance. that's when the baby's mother said sanchez gomez threatened to kill both of them. he then fled the home with the child. before 8:00, a person reported a child was dropped off at their stockton home. the baby is okay and should be reunited with its mother soon.

police are still looking for sanchez gomez. driving a dark gray 2011 subaru forester with a california plate, 6 rtv 690. >> following developing news out of florida where residents are dealing with tornadoes. the storms touched down in sarasota and manatee counties, killing a 58-year-old man and his wife. >> steve and katie's son starting down our driveway. he was coming and covered in blood. i let down my window, and all he kept saying is i can't find my dad, i can't find my dad. he jumped on the back of my truck, and we had flashlights and headlights on the truck, and pulled up here. >> wilson's son and four grandchildren were injured. according to authorities, manatee county residents only had 18 minutes warning before the tornado wriped through at 4:00 this morning. >> three of the americans freed in a prisoner exchange with iran traveled to europe today.

they include "washington post" reporter jason rezaian. we report on the current state of diplomatic relations between the u.s. and iran. >> at least three of the dual national prisoners released by iran have left the country. this is the culmination between a deal between u.s. and iran. >> in the nuclear deal, no party has beaten another party. the iranian nation has won. nobody was beaten in the nuclear deal. neither inside the country nor among the countries that negotiated with us. >> a few years ago, it would have been unthinkable for iran and america to be talking directly to each other, but the direct talks have resulted in a nuclear deal, the release of american-iranian prisoners and avoiding tensions on the high seas or another hostage situation when the u.s. navy sailors accidentally drifted into iranian territorial waters.

this has been a long process since the negotiations started. we also have to be cautious of the fact that iran and america have very different strategic interests in the region and beyond. they don't see eye to eye on many issues, but they have started talking. a step in the right direction, but still a long way to go. as we have seen today, president obama imposed new sanctions on iran over its missile program. something that's sure not to go down well with iran's establishment. iran and america may be enemies, but at least they're enemies who are talking instead of fighting. nbc news, tehran. >> in hawaii, the coast guard announced the search and rescue crews found debris that appears to be from a helicopter crash. 12 marines are still missing after a training exercise went wrong. it's consistent with the type of aircraft the marines were flying. on thursday night, two choppers

collided off the north shore of oahu in a training mission. no sign of any survivors. family and friends of the missing rumeans remain hopeful. so far, the search effort has covered more than 18,000 square miles. >> well, we certainly all know how difficult it is to buy a house in the bay area, but what if you want to fabricate a solution to that? the average home price in lafayette, arinda, and moraga, along with nearby cities is now more than a million bucks. we explain how some people are getting pretty creative in order to avoid being outpriced. >> it started with an empty lot that then monday bought for a coup couple thousand dollars, and then the trailer showed up. >> disguised in cowboy hats. >> workers stacked his home. two housing modules that arrived in shipping containers.

raining as hard as .75 inches an hour. but you can see heavier rain showers here approaching the coast. right around pacifica and half moon bay, heading to san francisco, and starting to see the rain moving over the santa cruz mountains spilling into the santa clara valley. the first storm from 9:00 to 2:00 a.m., the focus on the central bay and south bay where we could see urban and small stream advisories extended overnight. tomorrow morning, notice things begin calm down. scatters showered to deal with as we go through the day, but not the widespread rain like we're seeing right now. >> rain totals out of the system as we add things up. most of the low land locations picking up an inch or so. the hilltops we're expecting 2 to 4 inches of rain. in the sierra, winter storm warning continues through 10:00 tomorrow morning. not a big snow produce sxr the snow level is pretty high. tuesday's storm will pack more powder for the sierra with a bit

of a cooler air support with that system and colder systems to follow later this week. temperatures tomorrow as we deal with a few scattered showers, 60 around san jose. upper 50s in san francisco and the north bay, and the tri-valley seeing highs tomorrow in the low 60s. so now, storm number two comes in. a little bit of a break tomorrow afternoon, and then just in time for tuesday morning, could be another 2 inches plus of rain, aiming in on the north bay. 11:00 in the morning, bull's eye. again, north of the golden gate bridge, but the system should move through fairly quickly, by the afternoon, skies clear. then we should manage a decent midweek break. that will be wednesday into thursday. you'll see temperatures kind of mild through the middle part of the week, trending cooler as the third storm arrives for friday. this is going to kick off the weekend of morered showers and we'll probably see the showers ongoing into saturday and sunday. so as we add everything up, seven-day outlook, for parts of the north bay, rain totals getting in into the 2 to 4 inch category, in addition to what we

just saw, and san jose and the south bay, 1 to 2 inches of rain. raefrl to date, the situation keeps improving. about 70% to 100% of average. interesting when you add things up for the month of january alone, only the 17th, and we've passed the monthly average in santa rosa. not including's rainfall. that's pretty impressive. oakland, lifermore, and san jose, still a little ways to go, but plenty of time left. if you add it up and compare it to 1998, big year for rainfall, where we saw everybody well above average for rainfall. very interesting, normally, as we head into february, monthly averages tend to drop off. what watch what happened in 1998, the biggest month for rainfall in the last strong el nino. super bowl on february 7th, we'll see if the trend continues. >> oh, boy. all right, rob, sounds good. thanks so much. >> fallen smith is joining us now. of course, seahawks fans bonding over today's game.
