you went to bed with rain on your rooftop--- now, we're waking up with wet weather on your roadways. you went to bed with some rain on your rooftop and now waking up with wet weather on your roadways. the live look from oak lpd where slick patches of highway will highlight the morning commute. dangerous surf in pacifica and not just along the weech beaches. crumbling the sidewalk above. but one reason residents can breathe a little easier this morning. plus, he broke down barriers for generations to come. today, we honor the legacy of martin luther king jr. and kicks off early with a celebration. garcia-cannon. bay area hammered by heavy rain and will continue into part of the morning. live look at the radar right now and that green, as you likely know, the bands of yellow and orange indicate heavier rainfall. so, the storm to the north bay first. here's a live look outside right now by the golden gate bridge and you can see the water on the roadway there, at least some patches of it. drivers have to be extra careful of the slick conditions. we head over to the south bay. here's a look at downtown san jose. we'll get right to it. meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning, sam and kris. we're seeing the rain continue in parts of the south bay and the east bay, but we will see this at times getting a little bit less intense as the bulk of the storm system continues to move to the east. look at the patch of the clouds just to the left part of the screen. that's the next storm system that will be moving in as we go into tonight and into tomorrow

morning. but some of the heavier rain moving east we're left with some spotty sprinkles and clouds and just enough to make those roads still wet as we have ponding of the water on the roadways and temperatures now in the low to mid-50s. highs today reaching into the low 60s and a little bit of a break for some but a chance of a spotty shower popping up as we go through the day. we're getting ready for the next round of rain. i'll talk about that, how much rain we've got and coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> thanks, kari. stormy weather in the north bay causing problems there, including mudslides. they have brought in heavy equipment along highway 116 in west guerneville to clear rock and mud from the roadway. in marin the rain hanged over the area. store owners in mill valley put up sandbags and same goes for the folks. >> two years ago terrible flooding on the street. just getting prepared. we have a gate that will go

across, but little preventative. >> sandbags are in demand for homeowners, as well. you can see this location here in napa, residents were loading up, keep the water out. napa has historically seen severe flooding but they hope the new road controlled project fun lnels away from homes and businesses. remaining under a flood advisory that should end in three hours. the high surf advisory expired earlier. those waves in pacific relentless waves pounded the city overnight. that surge was strong enough to take out a section of retaining wall and also a walkway along beach boulevard. crews spent yesterday building a ma makeshift wall. some water front neighbors say it has been pretty intense at times. >> so waves were like crashing on the window and it it like, it it was like an earthquake.

national park system. every year parking fees and sport fees are free. talk about mlk and his legacy a lot of events. the biggest event every year, the celebration train that departs at 9:45 this morning. there are stops along the peninsula into san francisco. by 11:00 a.m., those on the train leave san francisco cal train station and then march to the gardens for a celebration. also on the peninsula, volunteers are going to work to restore the old guadalupe trail. the organizer says its service to nature advances martin luther king's legacy. tonight a candlelight vigil, if the weather cooperates, we'll get more into that. they'll hold the vigil outside of mission church. if it does rain, they'll hold it inside. students will be reading selection of king' s work.

one observance will be more like a protest. they will march for the second year in a row to "reclaim martin luther king jr.'s radical legacy." this will start at the plaza at 11:00 this morning the anti-terror police project. they scaled back the event in richmond because of the weather, but there they will multiand weed the greenway. okay, so, kari does not have a crystal ball, but she does have a radar. let's get right now into the timeline for the wet weather this evening. >> the good news is that we are seeing the bulk of this heavy rain moving out in time for the morning commute but we will have lingering light showers and just enough wet weather to make things pretty soggy out there. here's a look at the timeline and as that moves away, we will still have a chance of spotty showers waking up in the morning

and another wave early afternoon and with light rain passing through, but not everyone will see those showers. so, definitely a day to keep the umbrella handy. now temperatures in the low to mid-50s and lower 60s today and so nice to get the warm weather and a little bit of sunshine. we will see that peeking out from behind the clouds and there's, yet again, another round of rain that will be moving in. also some gusty winds. i'll detail that and what to expect as we go through the rest of the week that's coming up in less than ten minutes. lot of folks very closely this morning. coming up, the gloves came off at the last democratic presidential deit bait before the iowa caucuses. the heated word exchange by bernie sanders and hillary clinton. american prisoners including a local man are on their way home. obviously, you're looking at debate video still. the prisoner exchange between the u.s. and iran that is now completed. a final showdown before voters

have their say in 4:40 now and decision 2016. the final countdown before voters have their say in iowa. the democratic debate which you saw right here on nbc bay area featured a faceoff between presidential candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders. >> he voted to let guns go on to amtrak. guns go into national parks. >> you received over $600,000 in speaking fees from goldmian sacs in one year. >> the domestic topics included

gun control, health care and wall street. former maryland governor martin oo'malley was also there, he took part in the debate. clinton leaders sanders by 25 points nationally but neck and neck in iowa as she now trails bernie sanders in new hampshire. sanders made sure to point that out when he talked about his electability. >> in terms of polling, guess whau what, we are running ahead of secretary clinton in terms of taking on my good friend donald trump. >> this was the final debate between democrats before the iowa caucuses and the new hampshire primary. this is a good day. that announcement from president obama after the release of several americans held prisoner in iran. here's video of his swiss air force carrying several of the americans landing in geneva yesterday. the bay area native and "washington post" journalist was one of the five released. he was accused of working to undermine the iranian regime.

>> jason is coming home. he's been held for a year and a half. he embodies the brave spirit that gives life to the freedom of the press. >> there's no word on when the americans will return to the united states. in exchange, though, for that release, the u.s. is dropping charges against seven iranians. well, coming up, no long holiday for one school community in the north bay. look at what they have to clean up before the student come back tomorrow.

coming up on 4:45 as the tag there tells you. a microclimate weather alert in effect this morning. >> you are going to be working overtime today probably. >> the good news is that most of the heavy rain is behind us. we're kind of giving you a heads up of what the road conditions may be like out there as you head out and also watching for that possibility of some ponding on the roadways. some standing water that you may not want to drive over. as we take a live look now at the golden gate bridge, things are rolling smoothly there now and, of course, with it being a holiday, a lighter amount of traffic on the roadways as that storm system continues to move off to the east. we are still going to have the potential of some scattered showers as we go through the day. and looking at that heavy rain as it continues to move to the east, definitely great news as more and more people get out on the roadways.

but we still do have a coastal flood warning. that continues until 7:00 and we're watching those areas like mill valley, the great highway and real del mar where we could have some flooding in some of those low lying spots. now 55 degrees in san carlos and oakland and look at some of those rainfall totals in san francisco. you had over 1.25 inches of in soma and some spots getting a lot more than others and then as we go to the south bay, we've had about anywhere from about 0.5 to 0.75 of rain. as we take it hour-by-hour in oakland a lot of clouds throughout the day and temperatures starting out in the mid-50s making it into the low 60s and then look at what happens at 2:00 to 3:00 this afternoon and still a chance of rain in the forecast. as we get ready for the next system to move in, we do have the potential of another, at least half of an inch to maybe an inch in some spots. over the next three days, we do keep some rain in the forecast

for tomorrow but then it does dry out for wednesday with high temperatures slightly trending above average in a few spots. but right at about average for most of us. mostly sunny skies on wednesday and, of course, there will be some more storm systems moving our way. let's see how it pans out as we look at the models very quickly on tuesday, once again. another round of rain and then on thursday into friday we will have some downpours moving in and then for the weekend, looks pretty wet at times, especially on saturday. i'll have another look at the microclimate forecast, but, for now, back to ask you, sam and kris. >> you would say the sunshine after the rain, but not too much sunshi sunshine. more rain. an antioch infant safe and sound this morning and an amber alert has been canceled. but police are still looking for the 1-year-old's father. ricardo sanchez dpo mezthreatened to kill the boy and his mother yesterday. he was visiting her and the boy

after being estranged most of his life. the amber alert was issued after he then took off with the child. just before 8:00 last night a person called police saying the infant had been dropped off at their home in central valley. this is nunew video. police have not said if the person is related to the baby. police are still searching for gomez. last seen driving a gray subaru with license place 6 rtv690. a driver is wanted for hit and run after allegedly causing two other cars to veer off a south bay highway. it happened about 9:00 yesterday morning on northbound 280 near highway 87. the chp says the driver cut off a black lexus causing that car to swerve, hit an acura. both the lexus and the acura plunged down the side of the hill. the driver that set off that chain reaction kept going.

no one was hurt, but this could have been far worse as many homeless people camped right on that hillside. >> that was our concern, too, not only these vehicles came off the roadway, but they didn't contact one of the homeless and strike another person. >> officers are asking anyone with information to come forward. they do not, at this point, have a clear description of the suspect's car nor the driver. and kris, it was a deadly weekend on highway 4 in martinez. a series of crashes led to the death of a 19-year-old concord woman. the chp says the woman lost control of her mazda ending up hitting the center guard rail about 8:30 p.m. you see the car completely turned over there. this was on saturday night. she got out of the car just before it was struck by a buick, but the impact of that knocked the mazda into her and that knocked her into oncoming traffic. that woman was struck and killed. the other two drivers, however, did survive that crash.

we should learn more about a deadly tour bus crash in san francisco. it happened saturday near the intersection. a witness told us that the man crossing the street tried to get the attention of a tour bus driver turning toward him. the bus, instead, hit that man and dragged him underneath it. the driver did cooperate with police did that investigation which shut down the intersection for hours. the identity of the victims has not been released. authorities are waiting to notify his family. >> not the bay area! and making their voices heard at sfo for a second day in a row. occupy oakland protesters took their message to air travelers arriving into the bay area. this video was posted on instagram. the protesters gathered ooutside security at sfo and did the same thing at oakland airport on saturday. the group is trying to draw attention to the victims of bay area police shootings. a north bay elementary

school has some cleaning up to do before classes resume tomorrow. police say the doors were forced open and classrooms damaged at loma vista in petta luma. you can see if you look closely. there it is the spray paint on the pavement and some of that on the buildings. the vandals struck over the weekend and no one was at the school when this happened. officer os do not have a description of the suspect. tributes are pouring in this morning for a bay area fashion icon. wilkes bashford died after a battle of cancer. he was 82 years old. in 1986 he opened his first clothing store bearing his name. he and his flashy clothing quickly became fixtures in the city. willy brown recalls the first time he met the business owner. >> within a couple days of his opening i was in that store and he thought i was either a shoplifter or a competitive

shopping guy. and we started our friendship from that point on. >> bashford was also very active in fund-raisers throughout the city. his bay area stores are still open. coming up next, what goes up apparently must come down. that's what physics says. but in the case of the space-x rocket it didn't come down quite as intended. the cheeky response elan musk had to say about this landing.

to move over farther off towards the east and into the sierra. we will have a chance of some spotty showers as we go through the day and look at these temperatures. it will feel nice and comfortable with little bit of sunshine today, but still a chance of rain. high temperatures reaching 58 degrees in san francisco and 58 in napa and oakland 63 degrees and dublin looking at 63 degrees we'll take another look at the forecast coming up in a few minutes. one more day to get your skate on. the holiday ice rink at san francisco union square is closing until next season after today. the rink in the middle of the city's most popular shopping destination has been open since early november but now time to pack up the skates and the cute little skating outfits, too. today is the last day to take a spin around the rink because it is going to close tonight at 11:30. >> a lot of those kids are just trying to stay upright. despite the threat of rain, some folks thought they would

spend the day counting birds. these children spent part of their sunday tallying up the birds at don edwards wildlife refuge in fremont. after learning some tips at a binocular boot camp the kids headed out to count the number of birds and species and trees in bushes. >> the idea is to get them excited about it and then come back together over a brown bag lunch and they'll do a tabulation celebration and in doing that they will decide how many total species did we count as an entire group here at edwards. >> so, the total count gets reported to cornell university and actually becomes part of the database used by the government and schools across the country. these folks had their eyes on the skies for the a different reason. spacex rocket went up and came

down. >> and liftoff. >> all right. right above all of those flames. it went up. the weather was foggy on california's central coast, but that didn't stop the rocket launch from going off on time. it was a successful launch, that's the good news. but when the rocket landed on a floating barge in the pacific, a support leg broke and it toppled over. elan musk tweeted out this photo of the rocket booster and said, "at least the pieces were bigger this time." they sent a jason 3 into orbit and monitor levels and predict el nino and la nina patterns, as well. the walmart in oakland has closed its doors for good. among the 154 locations nationwide that walmart decided to shut down. 420 employees in oakland have lost their jobs. they'll receive 60 days severance and have the opportunity to be relocated. the san jose walmart on monterey
