6:00 am
area this week with the most recent one pounding us right now. you the doppler radar still very active. roads considerably wet to kick off the start of your week. that string of storms is increasing mudslide and flood concerns from the coast to the south bay and everywhere in between. >> team coverage to get you prepared, but, first, meteorologist kari hall for a look at this latest storm's path and when we're going to get the brunt of it, kari. >> we already had the brunt of the storm moving in for this one moving in and now it continues to wind down and still leaving behind wet roads. as you take a look at the clouds to the left of your screen, that's the next storm system that will be here tomorrow morning. so, a little bit of a brief break, but still some spotty, light showers expected as the rain ends we're seeing some patch dense fog in some spots and some mist and drizzle, especially for the north bay. watch out for low visibility as you drive this morning. highs will reach into the upper 50s for the san francisco, as
6:01 am
well as the north bay and 6 2 degrees for the east bay, peninsula reaching 60 degrees. also 60 in the tri-valley and the south bay looking at 63 degrees. i'll have a look at ahead for the next storm system. that's coming up. as the latest storm makes its way through, massive waves are crashing in pacifica forcing crews to scramble to try to fix the damage along the coastline there. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live there now with what the powerful waves are leaving behind already. steph, you were saying you were feeling nervous about turning your back on the ocean. that's a very good thing. >> yeah, i actually have my umbrella out here, kris. not raining but i'm hoping this could help protect me from what's coming. high tide now and the coastal flood advisory and there goes one right now. the coastal flood advisory and still 7:00 this morning. here we are where crews had to put these boulders to block off this walkway because behind it there is a sinkhole and the
6:02 am
waves are crushing up underneath, as well. they don't want anyone there. you can also see to the left by the pier the waves that are rolling through and just how powerful they are. but, the crews really want people to stay away from this area. i got to say, it hasn't really been effective. the waves ever so often strong enough bringing out people like mark smith whose family house is just a block away. >> last night i woke up around 4:00 a.m. thinking it was an earthquake and walked out here and the sinkhole had just started. >> now, here's a look at some of the waves over the weekend. expected up to nearly 20 feet high. not sure how high these will get this morning, but it is, again, high tide now and there is a watch in effect, again, for
6:03 am
another hour this morning. the warning is as exciting as it seems to come out and be here where the waves are. try to stay away. live here in pacifca. >> thank you very much, stephanie. from damaging waves in pacifica. let's turn now to "today in the bay" bob redell. we saw a surge of a few feet the last several days but that river hasn't crested yet. >> actually, it does appear to have crested within the past 30 minutes since i last spoke with you. good morning to you, sam. hard to tell from this point of view, but looks like it is a couple inches lower than it was, let's say, about a half hour ago. the river did surge several feet overnight. these are the latest numbers from usgs. at midnight the guadalupe was at five feet. that is what the gauge reading was just above highway 101 and at 5:00 a.m. it was reading around 9.5 feet. you're looking at a 4.5 foot
6:04 am
surge. this is the first time we have seen the guadalupe in a very, very long time because of the drought and on the peninsula in palo alto the creek, again, before midnight, around midnight, just below a foot and at around 5:00 a.m. it was close to about four feet. so, that's a surge of roughly three feet. we shouldn't be surprised given the heavy rains that we saw overnight. we don't have reports of flooding here south bay, at least not from the rivers. there is localized flooding on some of the roads. but, again, we haven't had the rain now for a good 60 to 90 minutes. that's the reason why the guadalupe has crested and we've done stories on this over the last few years about the flood control project. this story here by park avenue is hard to see in the dark. this is one area that has been built up. if and when the guadalupe would reach its flood stage around 17 feet, the city, the downtown area is prepared.
6:05 am
bob redell "today in the bay." live look sat san rafael and still pretty wet from the overnight rainfall. the storm still causing problems in the north bay. mudslides. crews brought in heavy equipment west of guerneville to clear away the mud and rocks from the roadway. in marin the rain seemed to hang over that area and that's why residents were getting ready for the worst. >> few years terrible flooding on the street, so just getting prepared. we have a gate that will go across in case the floods do come. little preventative. >> sandbags are in demand for both homeowners and store owners. here in napa, residents loading up to keep the water out. napa has historically seen some pretty severe flooding, but they hope the relatively new flood control project will funnel that water away from homes and businesses, instead.
6:06 am
we have a great way for you to track the storms. our free nbc bay area app. just click on the weather tab and find the live doppler radar and you can see the current one and the future one and download that app from the apple app store or google play for android devices. a gunman on the loose and a man in serious condition after being shot in hayward. now, police are asking for help just to find out what happened. officers found the victim on harris road right near huntwood avenue. this was about 12:30 yesterday afternoon. all police can say at this point is that it's a 30-year-old man and they are looking for a suspect believed to be in his 20s. in antioch an infant is safe and sound this morning after an amber alert was canceled. police are still looking for that 1-year-old baby's father. police say 27-year-old ricardo sanchez gomez threatened to kill the baby boy and his mother yesterday. she told officers gomez was visiting her and the boy after being estranged most of the baby's one year of life.
6:07 am
the amber alert was issued after he took off with the baby. just before last night, a person called the police saying the infant had been dropped off at their home in the central valley. this video just in from the neighborhood in stockton where that happened. police haven't said who called them or whether that person is related to the baby. police are still looking for gomez who was last seen driving a dark gray 2011 subaru 6rtv690. if you have any information about the baby, the dad or the car, police want you to give them a call. and now back to our top store that microclimate weather alert. still in effect this morning and a live look at san jose right now where you can see the roadways are still wet because of this latest storm system. although kari has said it sort of moved through the brunt of it anyway. >> we're still left with some spots where we're closely watching the river levels and
6:08 am
some water on the roadways as you head out this morning. some of the residual effects of this storm system moving through. but, once again, the heavier rain is moving out. here's the way it looks as we go through the day. as that moves out, weal still be left with the clouds and the possibility of some spotty, light showers as we go into the afternoon. this will be very hit or miss and shouldn't be anything to cancel your outdoor plans, especially if you're heading to holiday events and celebrations. as we go into tonight, taking a little bit of a break before that next storm system moves in. stepping out the door right now, in the mid-50s and heading into the lower 60s today. nice to have the warm air along with a little bit of sun today to help dry out those roadways and the grass before, once again, another round of heavy rain. i'll talk about that coming up in less than ten minutes. >> okay, kari. in the meantime, don't let the rain keep you from celebrating the holiday. lots of events happening around the bay area in honor of the late dr. martin luther king jr. >> the biggest event every year is the celebration train, you
6:09 am
might remember it used to be the freedom train. it is basically the same event with a different backer. the celebration train departs cal tran station at 9:45 and then makes stops along the peninsula into san francisco where there has been a march and celebration. also on the peninsula, volunteers will work to restore the old guadalupe trail. that paved trail runs through state park and service to nature advances martin luther king's legacy. then tonight a candlelight vigil at santa clara university outdoors, if the weather cooperates. if it does not cooperate, then they will move the vigil from outside the mission church inside. students will read selections of dr. king's work during that ving vigil, as well. in oakland one observance will be more like a protest. march for the second year in a row to "reclaim martin luther king jr.'s radical legacy." this event starts at 11:00 this

we have a microclimate weather alert as the first storm system of the week winds down. we have several more on the way. we'll take a look at how much rain fell near where you live and what else to expect coming up in the microclimate forecast. we're also keeping track of the wet roadways this morning. live look at san jose right now where the roadways are pretty slick. we see some ponding, as well. we'll show you the areas hardest hit, coming up. you're ponding, talking about ponding. the stock markets today closed for the holiday that left scott mcgrew some time to ponder the
6:14 am
bay area economy. >> i kind of wondered where you with that. let's ponder. some early clues, sam. the go go days of this particular boom in the san francisco bay area are go going. a few of them. one of the numbers is the amount of money venture capitalests pouring into all the san francisco start up. 2015 was a record year for venture capital nationwide and in the bay area. $105 billion. but when you look month to month all of the strength is at the start of the year and really fades by the fourth quarter. this according to a report by the venture capital industry itself. as the money begins to dry up from the flood, we start to see some of the weaker companies cut jobs. the dating app just did and go pro, living social. chevron is a local company. it had big cuts, but that's due to low oil prices. those are getting lower this morning.
6:15 am
the historic deal over the weekend with iran means iran can start selling oil and the oil markets are already overflowing. oil down to $28 a barrel. on a happier note, a huge success over the weekend for space-x. safely delivering a satellite into polar orbit. this is a liftoff from vandenburg air force base. everything went perfectly by anyinable standard. space-x did well, but then there was this. this was the landing of the first stage of the ocean board platform and going so well. oh, it's tipping over. a leg failed and the whole thing went kapluy. this is one of the situations where you see headlines that say space-x failed to, you get six as and one b or more like an f. they did an incredible job getting something into polar orbit. it's amazing. haven't quite stuck the landing.
6:16 am
>> they need a better kick stand. >> they do. if you are planning on going ice skating at san francisco union square, today is your last chance. the rink is in the middle of the city's most popular shopping destination, it's been open since early november, but now time to pack up the skates until next year. today is the last day to take a spin around the rink. it is going to close tonight at 11:30. >> i could see you going with your girls later today. okay, also, free admission at some california national parks for martin luther king jr. day. the program includes yosemite, muir woods and the san francisco maritime museum at hyde street pier. dr. martin luther king jr. day one of the free days that national park service has each year. parking fees and tour fees are also free. it's indoors today and it's soggy outside as we continue that microweather. >> and you've been outside and the ground is just so mushy.
6:17 am
but we welcome every single raindrop that has been falling. we're taking a little bit of a break now as the storm system continues to move off to the east. as we take a live look now at the bay bridge, apparently not everyone has the day off. we do see a lot of people out on the roadways and watch out for some standing water on the roadways. now, as we take a look at some of the rainfall totals we had so, oakland's had close to two inches of rain and 1.25 in union city and lafayette had over 2 inches of rain in danville and 1.6 and over 4 inches tiburon over an inch of rain and napa 2.4 and san francisco had 1.2 and we're still seeing pretty good amounts of rainfall for not only the past 24 hours, but for the month so far. and as this systems wraps up and moves off to the east, we will have temperatures now in the lower 50s. a mild start to the day. a nice warm afternoon. reaching 64 degrees in los gatos
6:18 am
and the sun starting to peek out. at 56 degrees. now, we will still have a chance of spotty rain throughout the day. so, it's not time to completely put away the umbrellas. you want to keep it in the back seat. 58 today in napa and 63 in oakland and dublin looking at 61 grees. this is what the radar could look. as we go throughout the day, it shows we could still see some light rain. but then here we go into tomorrow morning at 4:00. the rain starts to move from north to south. some green on the radar shows light to moderate rain, but then when it turns yellow, that's the heavier rain, even some more intense downpours as we go through the the morning commute into the lunchtime hour. and then as we go into the evening commute, still some rain falling in parts of the bay area. so, tomorrow looks pretty soggy, once again. with the rain lingering for a few more hours throughout the afternoon. the rain forecast brings us the potential of maybe another half of an inch and up to an inch of
6:19 am
rain in some spots. so, maybe heavy, once again, before we have a dry wednesday. we'll have another look at the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, thanks, kari. stay informed about the weather and more even when we're not on the air. just download our nbc bay area app from apple store or google play. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri will show thus weather. >> make it easy to get the very latest information on your smartphone. click on the bar that says weather alerts and you'll get the information you need to know right when you need to know it. i'm chief meteorologist jeff r ranieri. more than 50 people force leap into the sea as their ferry catches fire right in the middle of the sea. dramatic rescue that saved their lives.

6:30 am
the overnight rain part of the string of storms headed towards us as we speak and we're tracking all of the storm systems this morning as mudslide and flood concerns heighten across the bay area. >> this morning we have team coverage to get you prepared for what is in store from the north and south and everywhere in between. we start with meteorologist kari hall for more on what we can expect moving forward this morning and the worst of this storm, kari, has now passed. >> it has. it is still leaving behind standing water on the roads and also high creeks and rivers. but as we look to the left of the screen, that cluster of clouds, that's the next storm system that will be here by this time tomorrow morning. so, now a brief chance to kind of dry out out there. as we still see the wet roads and drying this morning and mist and drizzle in parts of the north bay and low visibility in some spots. today's forecast brings in a little bit of sun and a chance of a spotty shower at any point today. so, it's not time to leave the umprella at home.
6:31 am
you want to keep it in the back seat of the car as today we could still have scattered showers. but more rain on the way tomorrow. i'll detail that coming up in the microclimate forecast. well, right now massive waves are crashing down in pacifica as high hide rolls in. crews spent most of the day repairing damages that were caused there by the waves and more storms heading our way as kari has been talking about it. stephanie chuang is talking live. a wave splashed over the guard rail. i hope you're staying drive. >> the waves haven't been powerful but to really come over here. there have been a couple. i have been out here, thankfully. you know who is not immune are these three guys from public works from the city of pacifica and not out here to make repairs but to assess the damage and the sinkhole and how the waves are impacting that sinkhole this morning.
6:32 am
they just got drenched and saw me take cover, as you said. they have the boulders out here, as well. you can see behind the bolder is where the sinkhole is. just parts of concrete washed away, eroded because of those powerful waves and taped off this section to try to keep people out and away. and it's been a bit unsuccessful. we spoke early this morning with mark smith whose family home is just a couple hundred feet away from this walk way. he woke up around 4:00 yesterday morning to what sounded like an earthquake. it was that powerful surf. this morning he got up early on purpose to try to capture the waves on his camera. >> you can see a good set coming in and splashing off the pier a a and, yeah, el nino only happens so often and the king tides are pretty cool. >> now, here is a look at some of the waves from over the weekend. they were expected to be up to
6:33 am
20 feet high and some concerns for the homes around here where people have been sand bagging parts of their hoemp homes for protection. that coastal flood warning goes through 7:00 this morning and i want to add that i did speak briefly with the public works department who said, you know what, we're not going to make repairs to maybe weeks, maybe months and ride out ubtintil th stormy season is over. >> stephanie, very bold this morning by the boulders. thank you very much. pacifica is not the only coast line getting a beating from these el nino storms. in half moon bay a sewer line is starting to be exposed and that's raising worries that waste could spill into the ocean san mateo county public works is filing permits with the coastal commission to try to fix that problem. it wants to add large boulders along a wall in the area to keep the exposure from spreading. three feet of the wall crumbled. nearby homeowners hope that a
6:34 am
solution comes sooner rather than later. >> it can create an immense in environmental pollution. >> well, as the county works on a long-term solution, they plan to put large boulders along the beach to take some of the wave's energy away. more wet weather heads our way, another major concern moving forward is the rising water. "today in the bay" bob redell live at the guadalupe river with how things are shaping up amid this latest storm and where are we now, bob? >> we're only a few inches below the crest point. good morning to you there, kris. at the guadalupe river. think about what this looked like a few months ago when we're doing stories on how dry this creek was and dead fish and debris and now you've got quite a good flow here. according to the usgs, they saw a surge. the guadalupe saw a surge of 4.5
6:35 am
feet between midnight of last night and 5:00 this morning. at midnight usds and the flood gauge at 101 area of the guadalupe was reading five feet by 5:00 this morning it was around 9'6". that appears to have been the crest mark. the 9'6" and we've seen it gone down a few feet since. the san francisquito creek and then it surged until the latest reading around 6:00 this morning at just over 3'9". so, again, you saw a surge of almost four feet there. which wouldn't be a surprise considering the heavy rains that we saw overnight and, of course, stilling that run off come down the local hills and mountains, which we don't know how long this will continue for. as we know, this is well below this flood stage of around 9'6"
6:36 am
and several feet below that and, of course, did not go over the water banks and credit to the flood protection that has been going on here for the past several years to protect san jose for if and when we get the big rains or the constant rains and this would flood the river over its banks. >> keeping an eye on that all week. thank you, bob. a great way to track the storms is our free nbc bay area, a pp. click on the weather tab to find the radar and you can download the app from the google ap store or from google play. a man police shoplifted and then used a knife to threaten security guards is now locked up. police in brentwood say that jason stole items from a brentwood grocery store on saturday and when store guards approached him outside, they say he pulled a large hunting knife. officers arrived quickly and

located and arrested him without incident. it's 6:36 right now. it was a deadly weekend on highway in martinez. a series of crashes led to the death of a 19-year-old concord woman. the chp says the woman lost control of her mazda and hit the center guard rail at about 8:30 p.m. saturday night. she got out of the car, made it out okay and then just before it was struck by a buick, the impact of that crash knocked the mazda into her, that knocked her directly into oncoming traffic. the woman was struck and killed. the other two drivers involved in that crash survived. police should learn more soon about a deadly tour bus crash in san francisco that happened saturday near the intersection of divisadaro. trying to get the attention of the tour bus driver turning toward him, but the bus hit that man, dragged him underneath it. the driver did cooperate with police during the investigation, which shut down the intersection for hours. the identity of the victim has not been released because

authorities are still waiting to notify his family. sinkhole repairs are going to continue on church street in san francisco this week and the work will disrupt muni service. crews are going to be working on church between 22nd and 24th streets, all service on the j church and lines are going to be serve by bus shuttles as a result of those repairs. the work is expected to last until at least tomorrow. the sinkhole was first reported on new year's eve. back to our top story that microclimate weather alert still in effect right now as we look live at san jose right now. still wet from the latest storm, though, a little bit drier as we saw in bob redell's live picture. we'll turn now to meteorologist kari hall. kari, the rain letting up, but we should say for now, right? >> right. because we're giving you a heads up of the next storm system moving in. and we seen the heavier rain now moving to the east of the bay area, but we're still left with some wet roads and some of the residual effects of that rain we had earlier this morning.
6:39 am
let me show you what it will look like through the rest of the day. this shows some of the green and the radar, and some of the spotty light showers that could pop up throughout thing. so, we may not be completely done with the rain, but this rain will be very hit or miss. very light and we shouldn't keep you from attending some of those holiday celebrations for martin luther king jr. day. as we go into this evening, still some light rain in parts of the bay area before that next storm system gets here for tomorrow morning. stepping out the door now in oakland, it's 54 degrees and 53 degrees now in san francisco. we'll a look at what to expect for the next few days as rain moves in and out of the bay area. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. >> thank you very much, kari. coming up, an emotional and momentous 48 hours for five americans, including a bay area native leased from prison in iran. we'll show you how they're holding up this morning, next. a lawsuit that will make you say you have got to be kidding. we are not kidding. we'll show it to you coming up. plus, the internet lit up
