weather alert. this as we take a live look outside, a live look at our satellite dar. you can see heavy rain blanketing of the bay area as we speak. >> our team here in the bay area are ready to get you out the door if that's where you're headed. let's start with meteorologist kari hall. how long will the rain stick around? looks like we're getting a lot of it. >> widespread and will last for a few more hours. this impacting the morning commute as we get a closer look at the scans as it moves around the bay area. right now some of the heaviest rain is moving into the south bay. so, just south of san jose. heading up 101. there may be some standing water on the roads, so watch out for that. as it continues, slick conditions downpours and some breezy winds. we may, at times, haves up to 35 miles an hour. as you go through the morning commute, still very soggy, but this evening it will be drying up. so, i'll detail that and look ahead for the next chance of rain that will be here by the end of the week. that's coming up in just a few
6:01 am
minutes. but let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. >> karia combination of factors that are a big issue. of course, the rain that you've been tracking and we've seen this for weeks as you get the commute started and also looking at the rebuild that we've seen over the last few days coming in now for the winter holiday. now we're seeing a lot of traffic north 101 through soupy conditions in san jose. let me show you the map which we're talking about a slower drive and an incident that we just heard about in that backup. 87 shows early slowing and so does 280 linking those two freeways. now, you notice we don't have the road weather index and soggy conditions and maybe some puddling and ponding over here for the blue section over there towards 280 and along that peninsula. that is one big issue coming across the dumbarton bridge and the rain smacks down on the san mateo bridge. both sides are showing a slower drive with that morning commute building. the tri-valley seeing more slowing than we've seen for a few week there's and getting up towards the bay bridge and the

6:03 am
perfect conditions. we all know that the speed limit is for ideal conditions. these are not ideal conditions. you can see the ponding on the roadway and certainly seen some of the rooster tailing. a little bit of advice this morning. slow down whether you're on the freeway or on surface street. try not to splash the people standing. we expect that to happen any minute now. save yourself a little time. get a little cup of coffee instead of messing with your hair too long because not going to matter this morning. the rain is really coming in hard. and you can see that it is coming in at an angle. so, if you are crossing over one of our bay area bridges today on your commute, make sure you do hold on tight because it is definitely blustery out here and there is a lot of water on the roadway. by the way, i use our nbc bayia app this morning because if you look on the main page, you'll see the doppler radar that kari has. but when you're away from the tv, also look at the future

"today in the bay" bob redell live at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning with the group's message and reaction, bob, from some pretty frustrated drivers. >> well, thousands of drivers were inconvenienced by yesterday's action. good morning to you, sam. as a result, chp arrested 25 of those protesters for doing this. as you mentioned, they took five cars parked them in the westbound direction of the bay bridge shutting down all five lanes and then some members of that protest group called ended up chaining them selves to the vehicles and/or each other. it wasn't until chp brought bolt
6:06 am
cutters up there that they were able to finally clear up that blocked area. but that was not without a backup that lasted hours for thousands of drivers who are inconvenienced. >> i haven't done anything bad to anyone, so why do i have to sit here in traffic for hours. >> the inconvenience that you may have experienced on the bridge, like imagine what it is like to be inconvenienced. have your well being constantly inconvenienced as a black person. >> the group behind yesterday's protest said they wanted to honor the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. and also protest recent police shootings in oakland and san francisco. as i mentioned, chp arrested 25 people for public nuisance and unlawful assembly. but all 5 of those people were bailed out of the san francisco county jail late last night. reporting live here at the bay bridge toll plaza, bob redel "today in the bay." a woman screams in san jose helped fend off a frightening

6:09 am
>> while crews monitor that situation in pacifica, the chp is also closely watching highway 84 in fremont. you remember yesterday rocks and mudslides or mud came sliding down a hillside. that's in niles canyon yesterday. a live look at san jose right now. the rain continues to fall this morning. the roads are very slick. we're going to check in with mike and a look at the morning commute in just a moment. right now, let's check in with kari hall. she's been really monitoring the radar. >> it is pretty much covered at this point. we are seeing rain all across the bay area and as we take a look at the clouds streaming in from the west, well, that means that there is still more moisture to move in. so, i do exthis for another fpe next five or six hours until it starts to taper off. in the meantime we have rain still heavy in some spots. in some areas we have rainfall rates that are coming down at about 0.1 to maybe 0.25 inch per hour but that is enough to create some water just standing
6:10 am
on the roads. and when you see the bright yellows and reds, that shows the more intense rain. we could see that by 8:00 in the morning in the east bay also for the peninsula and moving into the south bay later on. so, the rain timeline still shows that we will have rain in and around the bay area. at least until noon and then it starts to clear out as that storm system moves off to the east. we'll have another one right behind that. so, i'll detail that coming up in the next microclimate forecast in less than ten minutes. but let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike. >> we have your dublin camera over here. we show you the off ramp and the slick conditions. we warn you the slower the speed because off ramps like that where they are making the curve can be an issue as far as traction goes. we also see the cars westbound and a good amount of cars and good spacing and looks like these commuters are slowing down a bit because the conditions demand that. as kris was asking you to do out of the san mateo bridge and folks are doing that for west 580. over here we'll look at your map and see more slowing than we've

seen through the stretch for the last couple of weeks and there's where our camera is and we see speed there and slowing southbound towards pleasanton and sunol. a rebuild this week from before thanksgiving and we haven't seen this much traffic and we expect that to continue on towards the end of the week where your commute will continue to restore itself back to what you expect that commute to be, which is very unpleasant for most. looking towards northbound 101 and 87 over the last few minutes. here we've seen traffic ease up a bit and see it kick in in the next 20 minutes or so. over here on the radar and the index closer and big puddling issues and a crash north 101 at third still causing more slowing and that is the second for san mateo. we talked about that being wet and soupy at times. walnut creek looking better and minor flooding for oakland, parts for san francisco along the peninsula and also for san rafael. no surprises where these reports are popping up, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:11.

are up in some spots. we're expecting four to eight inches of snow. a lot of rain moving in. we still have more to come. several more hours of this rain pouring. at times it does get a little more intense, but right now we are seeing green praty much all over the bay area and that shows that there is just a steady rain coming, but some of the heavier downpours now moving through parts of the tri-valley and the east bay, but still looking good and, also, some slick spots as you head out for this morning commute. the rain estimate shows that we will still have some bright yellows and some reds showing the more intense rain. this is what the radar could look like. these numbers show what the rainfall totals may be at that point in time. so, by 10:00, we may have at least 0.75 in oakland. and about 0.5 in napa and spots like heavier amounts of rain over an inch and by the time this starts to taper off, we'll at least all have about 0.75 and maybe 0.5 in some of the lighter spots like livermore and then pie this afternoon, the rain

point, but make it heavy, once again, for the north bay. another round of heavier downpours moves into the north bay right now. as we continue to track this rain, it it creates some standing water on the roadways. some of the small streams may be flooding and water levels rising and those downpours also creating problems for the commuter heading back to work or school this morning. temperatures today will top out in the upper 50s for the north bay and san francisco. low 60s for the south bay, east bay and tri-valley. we'll also see this rain tapering off later on this afternoon. so, i'll detail that and the next storm system set to arrive by the end of the workweek. that's coming up in just a few minutes. let's check in now on the roads with mike. >> this leps rigns right here g hit. this is 280. look at the steady stream of lights. there is a crash just north of the 280/880 interchange. great shot of san jose. look at your map and just show you just north of there, lawrence expressway.

6:33 am
my cameraman just got blown around a little bit. he was using an umbrella to try to keep the camera dry. as you look up, you can see it's blowing nearly parallel to the ground. that means it will get into all nooks and crannies. we're getting it from the sides blowing into the cuffs of our jacket. as you are driving, though, slow down and don't observe the speed limit because the speed limit is posted for ideal conditions and these are not ideal conditions. do slow down. give yourself a greater distance to travel. and if you're driving alongside a sidewalk, for crying out loud, don't splash through the puddle. there are kids walking to school this morning and folks standing on the side of the roadway trying to do their jobs. me being one of them. so, do be careful out there. chp, again, advises that you hold on to the steering wheel with both hands when it's windy like this. the old recommendation of 10 and 2 which we learned back in driver's ed is no longer the recommendation. it's 9-3.

6:40 am
will still see some of this moving into parts of the north bay where the rain just pours and it also causes that water to just stand on the roadways. so, right there in the north bay right on 01 we do see the precipitation rate coming down at 0.25 per hour. as we take a look at the rain timeline. still through the morning commute, it is coming down. when you see the reds and the yellows, that indicates the most intense rain. it does become wider by 11:00, but still some rain coming down and a little bit more hit or miss as we go into lunchtime and early afternoon. the rain starts to roll off to the east and we will be catching a break with the sun just starting to peek out from behind those clouds right before the sun sets. so, more rain for the next few hours. the concern of flooding and also thosy winds may bring down some of the trees. so, we'll be watching out for that. watching out for the roadways now. let's check in now with mike to see how the roads are moving. >> kari, concern for the road conditions and the hillsides and the trees. so far that's not the biggest issue. but we have the biggest build
