in place as police actively search for a man who could be dangerous. let's get right to bob redell. this man is wanted for an early morning burglary. >> reporter: correct. they've already arrested his suspected accomplice a woman. this has been going on for just over three hours now. you can see officers with the san mateo police department. we know the sheriff department is out here and south san francisco police. they are trying to coordinate a search to try to find this man, a suspected burglar. we're on hillsdale. this burglary took place around the corner from where we're at on green oak court. it was around 2:45 this morning. a homeowner called 911 to say they interrupted a burglary. when the officers arrived, they immediately encountered a woman. there was a brief altercation between the woman and one of the officers. and the officer felt his life was in danger, he pulled out his

firearm, took a shot at her, missed. they were able to get her in custody. she was not hurt. they do believe there was a suspected man burglar who is still outstanding possibly within this neighborhood. that's why they have people who live in this neighborhood, the oning waking up and aware of what's going on, they're asking them to stay inside until the search is called off. this search has been going on for at least a few hours. we know there's at least two canines involved and several police officers from the san mateo police, san mateo sheriff and the south san francisco police department, again here in the hillsdale and green oak court area of the hills of san mateo. reporting live in san mateo, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to your micro climate forecast as we take a live look outside at san jose, much wall er this morning compared to 24 hours ago.

another storm system on the way keeping kari hall very busy. >> we are having a break. it is good to have a little time to dry out and let the water soak into the ground as we look at all the microclimates. fog may be the issue as you head out especially in the north bay and parts of san francisco where you can see the visibility is low. into this afternoon, it will be very nice, a mixture of sun and clouds. san francisco up to 62 and 65 in the tri-valley and the south bay. of course, once again, that rain is on the way. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. let's see how it looks with the low visibility in the tri-valley with mike. >> for parts of the north bay and coming across the golden gate bridge. although the folks driving 580 westbound, the cars are moving fine past hacienda toward the dublin grade. we can't see the grade. the roadway rises up into the low clouds. there may be a patch or two of

fog for drivers. on the san mateo bridge you see low clouds enveloping the area. plenty of visibility for you to drive safely, but lower those speeds just for safety as the clouds do drift through. the orange highlighting not here, although we see the orange for the road sensors slowing speeds for the tri-valley. the bay bridge metering lights are on. north of san rafael is where you might find other patches of fog. no delays for san jose or the peninsula just yet. back to you. a developing story right now out of pakistan. that's where gunmen stormed a local university killing at least 20 people. they triggered an hours' long gun battle with the army and the country's police. the attack started just after the university opened for classes. it's not immediately clear how many attackers participated, but the explosions could be heard around campus as the attack

unfolded. a taliban leader claimed responsibility in a call to the associated press. 6:03. this morning federal investigators will be looking into the exact cause of yesterday's deadly bus crash in san jose. the driver of that bus admits he was tired during the long drive from los angeles. two passengers died. several more were hurt. "today in the bay's" chris sanchez has been tracking the story for us for nearly 24 hours. she's live in gilroy with the latest developments. kris. >> reporter: we know there was surveillance camera and investigate lers be looking at footage from that. we know they will be looking at driver fatigue. that driver we now now is 58-year-old gary bonslater. he has been driving for gray lound for 26 years. he's from victorville down in southern california. until yesterday he had a clean driving record that changed just before 7:00

yesterday morning as he crashed his bus into those black barrels between the northbound highway 101 car pool lane and the connector to the highway 85 hov lane. two women were killed. one man has major injuries and eight other passengers went to the hospital with minor injuries, one of them an 8-year-old boy. those 20 passengers started their overnight journey to the bay area from l.a. nearly seven hours before. the chp says most told investigators they were asleep, but a few others said the driver seemed drowsy. the chp also reports that bonslater admitted being tired but he did not fall asleep at the wheel. >> he said that he remembered the bus striking the -- there were black barrels out here when -- before the collision, which you can see beyond the bus now. and then the next thing he remembered is the bus on its

side. >> the chp also interviewed a driver who was a few hundred feet back and saw the crash happen before being struck by debris. other witnesses told investigators they saw the bus weaving between lanes in the heavy rain that was falling as the bus flipped. there's also surveillance video. as we mentioned, federal regulators require drivers get at least eight hours of sleep before hitting the road. greyhound bus requires their drivers to sleep for nine hours before. we don't know how much sleep that driver got. we do know driver fatigue is a major factor in this investigation. in gilroy, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." crash survivors in the meantime are talking about their nightmare experience. 22-year-old christopher mcclellan was among the passengers returning to san jose and says he was awake ended with a jolt. >> a lot of screaming. honestly, it was five rolls that happened. there was a lot of chaos.

measures they hope improve tour bus safety. those proposals come in the wake of several incidents, the latest of which involved a tour bus that hit and killed a man over the weekend in san francisco's lower pac heights neighborhood. the measures include tighter regulations, tighter safety standards and stronger inspection programs. two missing uc santa cruz students, the ghocoast guard is giving up its search after a large wave knocked three people into the rocks. one person was able to get back on the rocks. but a 19-year-old woman and 25-year-old man have not been seen since. the coast guard tried to search yesterday, but you know what the weather was like. the man and woman were part of a group of five students at bonnie dune beach south of dave venn port. >> also with the winds, also

this morning, some spots of some low visibility and fog. so watch out for that as you drive to work or school. let's take a look at some of the fog on the bay as we do see the darker shades of gray. that shows where visibility is the lowest. inner bay is looking fairly good with high visibility in spots. as we head toward the tri-valley, they're seeing low visibility. novato, san jose, you may have to slow it down. our temperatures are a little cooler, too. now in the upper 40s in oakland. as we go into the day in san francisco, we or looking at above average temperatures. how about 62 degrees today and tomorrow. on friday, up to 59 degrees, still slightly above average. that's also when the rain moves in. when that rain moves out, we'll be slightly keerl. we'll drop it back to 57 degrees. taking a look at what's happening in the sierra, it's nice and clear now after getting quite a bit of snow. checking on what's happening in

squaw valley, if you're heading there for the next few days, we will have warm temperatures. we're melteding some of the snow as we're up to 44 degrees today, 42 degrees tomorrow. then it gets a little cooler on friday as the next storm system approaches. we do have a snow total at about 113 inches at the summit. we are looking at some additional snowfall, maybe another inch or two in some spots as we head towards sunday. a couple inches more in south lake tahoe by saturday morning. for the bay area we will have more rain moving in thursday night and you may linger into early saturday. it looks like more of a prolonged rain event with light rain. starting late tomorrow night and lingering throughout the day on friday. as it approaches, we won't have a heavy rain. it may pick up a little bit on saturday morning and then it wraps up by the afternoon. if you're making plans to get

outside, temperatures will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s. once again, rain out of here by saturday afternoon. sunday is looking dry with highs in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees in the south bay. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening on the roads. >> we found low clouds. see the lights you can make out? they're moving close to the speed limit. this is between our camera and the roadway just above the deck. san mateo bridge also showing a lot of lowe clouds drifting through the area, so impeding our view of much of that flat section. these folks are slowing only because of that volume of traffic and 3r57s a little extra slowing as the roadway rises up, blends with the clouds on the high-rise. use caution and allow extra time here. we'll show you maps. we don't see a lot of slowing across 92. we'll see the move over towards the peninsula which is clear right now. nice and easy towards san francisco. we widen the view and we don't

to terrorist attacks. >> happening today, lawmakers appear to backtrack on healthy requirements at the nation's public schools. the problem is some schools are having a hard time meeting those new requirements which call for more whole grains and lower sodium levels. the senate agricultural committee cooked up a compromise that will give schools two more years to reduce the sodium content in foods. that compromise is expected to get approvement from the panel. this next story, i'm a little worry. the golden arch's golden fries with chocolate drizzle. >> in japan mcdonald's is rolling out the mcchoco potato. you better start making the travel plans because the fries will only be available for a limit time in japan starting

of san mateo. in the past few moments san mateo police did reopen hillsdale boulevard here so people can get to and from work. they are still considering this to be an active search. you can see they have a lot of officers out here. think eve also had canines out here trying to see if they can find the man suspected of a burglary. this happened around 2:45 at a home on green oak court. police gave us more details. there was a family inside at the time. they heard this man trying to break into a side gate. they called 911. when the police arrived, they ended up stumbling upon a woman suspect who was outside trying to break into a car, and this is what happened. >> in her attempt to flee the scene, she jumped in the vehicle, drove right at an officer and his canine. the officer was forced to fire. the car was struck, she was not. neither she or the officer were

injured. >> reporter: as you probably were able to see in that video, that bullet, at least one bullet. we know one bullet struck the driver's side door. the woman was not hit. the woman and officer are fine. the woman is in custody. all we know is she is 31 years old. as far as her male accomplice, the perp actually trying to break into that home on green oak court, they are still looking for this person. that's why there's been this, quote, active search in this neighborhood. we're talking about the area of hillsdale, green oak court, countryside drive. this is a small area east of 92 in the mills of san mateo. reporting live in san mateo, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you so much, bob. now at 6:32 on your wednesday morning, time to look at your micro climate forecast. let's take a peek outside

overlooking san jose. much calmer this morning compared to 24 hours ago. here we go again. another storm is on its way. it's all good, kari has a look at the forecast. >> good morning. we are dealing with patchy dense fog in spots. other than that, things are nice, temperatures cool in the mid 40s in the north bay. as we take a look at today's forecast, look at these temperatures. up to 65 degrees in the south bay as well as the tri-valley. san francisco 62, and 62 in the peninsula. this is our break before the next storm system moves in. we'll talk about that coming up. let's see what's happening now with mike as you see the low visibility on some of those cameras. >> we're rain-free but fog in some of our shots north of the golden gate bridge. watch for patches throughout san rafael and novato. light look at the volume of traffic coming in.

now 222. nasdaq doing equally as poorly, down about 60 points. from a percentage point of view, that's about the same. lots of worries this morning. lower oil prices. we talked about that. the economy in china. we mentioned that before, and the imf worried about the overall health of the world economy. keep in mind, laura and sam, the american economy seems to be doing okay. it's everybody else that can't quite seem to get it all together. stock market and the economy are not the same thing, but okay here in the united states. >> thanks so much, scott. also this morning, federal investigators are going to be here in the bay area trying to figure out what happened moments before this greyhound bus crashed in san jose yesterday morning. the bus was traveling from los angeles with the final stop scheduled for oakland. we now know the identity of one of the women killed when she was

thrown from the bus. family members tell us she is 51-year-old fely ol' vaera. nine other people were also injured. now the bus driver admits he was tired during that long drive. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following the story since the crash happened nearly 24 hours ago. she's live in gilroy with the new developments and what they're focusing on for that investigation, kris. >> reporter: good morning, sam. we know investigators have surveillance video from on board the bus that is now here at a tow yard in gilroy. we know they're looking at the issue of driver fatigue. the driver is a 58-year-old man, seen in his profile picture. his name is gary bonslater, driving for greyhound for 26 years. he's from southern california and until now had a clean record. that changed just before 7:00 yesterday morning as he crashed

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in san francisco with more on the transformation taking place. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. the crews are supposed to start bringing in all the equipment to justin herman plaza at some point today. the impact, as you mentioned, it starts now. look at this. the signs for the toe-away zone along embarcadero south. road closures from washington down to the ferry plaza starts saturday to prepare for super bowl city. city crews arrived early, around 4:30 this morning to set up the cones ahead of the tree trimming. one guy said this is specifically to make things nicer for super bowl city. again, we're talking about a giant fan village with a concert

venue and food court. it of firmly starts on the 30th. muni line on the embarcadero will be impacted. some will take shuttles instead of street cars. for all you commuters, here is a look at the closures in the area. for almost three weeks starting saturday, not just for super bowl city which is free, but also around moss coney center, an interactive theme park which will require tickets. here we're talking about a detour from battery, harrison, folsom. the city suspending parking zones to help clear the way for all this traffic. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." the countdown is officially on. we're now just 1 days until the golden super bowl. >> we hope to get golden weather

for the super bowl. that's one of the reasons that the location like the bay area would be picked. a lot of rain recently. today is the exception to the rule. kari hall has a look at your forecast. >> today we take a break from the wet weather. in its place, the fog. today you in san rafael you can barely see anything. temperatures are a bit cooler, now in the upper 40s. today we're heading into the 60s. we'll talk about that next round and what to expect in about six minutes. let's check with mike to see if the fog is causing problems for the commuters. >> it's tough to catch it because it's moving around. we have the san mateo bridge compounded with the fact that we're seeing this burst of traffic, typical at 6:41. the fog and low clouds coming through the area. that's a slow drive. right now, 92 west on the flat section. traffic slow from the build-out

explosions at a fireworks plant in southern china have killed at least three people and hurt more than 50 others. take a look at that. local government says about 1,000 people are now evacuated from a village near the plant. no word on what caused the plant. just last week ten people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory in central china. laura, a tough decision for the u.s. marine corps this morning. it's suspending the search for 12 missing marines after two helicopters crashed in the waters off hawaii. instead the marine corps is switching to recovery and salvage efforts. the two choppers went down thursday, this after apparently crashing into each other during training exercises. the decision to suspend that search without finding survivors is particularly difficult for the marines who vow never to leave anyone behind. dramatic events unfolded for actor jamie foxx who jumped in to rescue a man from a burning car. police say the driver was drunk when he veered off the road in

ventura county. the truck rolled over several times and caught fire. f foxx says he heard the crash, jumped in his car and drove to see what happened. that's when he jumped into action. >> pulled him out. as we pull him out, within five seconds later, the truck goes up. i don't look at it as heroic. i just look at it like, you know, just had to do something. >> the victim's father met with the actor to thank him for his bra bravery. >> so happy that it happened here and there were the right people here. >> the driver is in the hospital with third degree burns and a broken collar bone. police say he will be charged with a dui. >> you don't usually see jamie foxx that serious. you did there. >> usually mellow. >> if you're looking for serious jamie foxx action, maybe try out netflix. >> that family certainly fans

into the ground, let the bay area dry out for a little while. let's bring back the rain in time for the weekend. let's take a live look outside. the golden gate bridge you can barely see. the red lights are rolling across. watch out for that. you can see the mist drifting across the lights. in some spots we've had to deal with fog and slightly cooler temperatures. in the east bay, it's 45 degrees as we drop into the south bay. we have lower 50s in. as we go hour by hour we will see the clouds and fog lifting a bit. the sun will be peeking out by 11:00. it will be about 55 degrees, i still think i'd have long sleeves on. into the upper 50s, as the sun breaking out later today. we're up to 64 degrees in los gatos, 64 in san carlos, the marina will be at 60 today. these temperatures are above

average in some spots. up to 63 degrees in napa. oakland, 62. dublin, a high of 64 degrees. we've had quite a bit of rain. how are we doing? we are doing fairly well. when you look at the rainfall from october 1st and now santa rosa has had over 18 inches of rain. that is almost where we should be for the this date. san francisco above normal with nearly 13 inches of rain. oakland, we've still got work to do. over eight inches of rain. at 83% of normal. livermore just about average. san jose above average. we have another weather system that will be moving in bringing additional rain before the weekend. it starts thursday night and lingers into early saturday morning. so this a light, steady rain that may hang out for a little while longer. but we do still have the clouds in the forecast. the futurecast shows what the cloud cover will look like. as the rain approaches saturday morning, that could impact the morning commute and it wraps up

early saturday morning. temperaturewise, upper 50s to lower 60s. sunday looks to be the best day for the outdoor activities. let's check with mike. >> roads are moving well. in the south bay we have the build. i told you yesterday we were seeing the build this week after the martin luther king holiday. that's where we start to see traffic come back after the holiday. the south bay showing a general trend around november, beginning of november. also seeing more slowing. southbound 880, one crash in the second lane. same thing over here, south 880 around a street. both of those moving to the shoulder. that's as the burst of traffic moves through. this may complicate things. looking for the tri-valley. pleasanton, typical pattern for 680. easy drive through the walnut creek interchange.

==laura/2shot== just moments ago - n meo police liftea shelr in place... stemming from an active search for a wanted burglary suspect. ==sam/gfx== today in the bay's bob redell is live in the area of "green oak moments ago, a shelter in place order lifted. >> bob redell live on green oak court. police searching for hours, as laura said, but so far no suspect. >> reporter: we spoke with a sergeant within the past ten minutes. they said after searching all the yards in this neighborhood here in the hills of san mateo on hillsdale and green observation court, they believe their man, the suspect who was

trying to break into a home on green oak court escaped. they have the man's 31-year-old woman accomplice in custody. she was trying to break into a car a couple doors down. when police arrived, they say she tried to run over an officer with her car. you can see by that bullet hole in the driver's side door that the officer did fire at her in self-defense according to police. he missed and was able to capture her. both he and the woman suspect were unhurt. around 2:45 this morning, a family called 911 reporting a man was trying to break into their house. san mateo police along the counter parts and south san francisco police set up a perimeter and asked people to stay inside while they conducted a search of the area with canine dogs and officers. within the past 10 to 20 minutes they lifted the shelter in place. that's where the car was parked.

but they have towed it away within the past hour. reporting live in the hills of san mateo, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:56. this morning federal investigators will be in the bay area looking for the exact cause of yesterday's deadly bus crash in san jose. two passengers died, several others hurt. the driver of that bus admits he was tired during the long drive from los angeles. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking this story for 24 hours and joins us live in gilroy with the new developments. now, kris, it's all about the investigation. >> reporter: it's all about the investigation. here is what you need to know about the investigation today. we know federal and state regulators will be looking at the bus here in gilroy, the surveillance camera. we know they're looking at that and also talking to the driver of the bus, 58-year-old gary bonslater who has driven for greyhound for 26 years with a clean record. the chp says he admits he was

tired but was awake. some of the passengers say the driver seemed drowsy after seven hours on the road between l.a. and the bay area overnight before crashing on the 101 connector to the 85 hov lane. >> he said he remembers the bus striking -- there were black barrels out here before the collision, which you can see beyond the bus now, and then the next thing he remembered is the bus on its side. >> reporter: part of what federal and state investigators will do now is create a 24-hour profile of what the driver was doing before he hit the road. to find out how much he slept, feder federal regulations require he sleep for eight hours. greyhound requires nine. we do know driver fatigue seems to be a very pertinent factor in this investigation.
