right now some lower sustained winds to 20 miles per hour. there's the rain. showers moving near oakland. we'll continue to see on and off showers through the day and the sierra snow winds down as well. we will eventually see sunshine here, and every now and again we'll see a few passing showers, sun will come back out. brief shower, sun comes back out. temperatures knaback into the 5 today. king tides will be plaguing the coastline. >> stay away from the water. >> if you have the ability, of course. we have lots of surfers here, but make sure you protect yourself and family if you're headed that way. >> fair enough. the super bowl less than two weeks away. road closures throughout san francisco start now for super bowl city festivities. live look this morning at the corner of washington and the

embarcadero. hunz of thousands of people local and tourists will experience the flavor. it's squeezed between the ferry building. about 20 blocks of streets will be closed off, more than a dozen workers are setting up the pop up village for football fans right now, that includes a stretch from the ferry building towards the hyatt regency and east of battery to south of market. best way to get around is to walk or take public transportation. san francisco police say they are prepared to take large crowds. >> we'll work to facilitate everyone's first amendment rights as much as we can. when people bump into other people's constitutional rights we'll make some calls. >> federal state and local law enforcement have identified this as a key area for security.

yard. the homeowner noticed the 70-year-old oak appeared to be tilting. his family managed to stay safe before the tree smashed through their window. >> moves our cars out and told my wife and daughter to get to the back of the house i was going over to talk to the neighbor and heard a crack and the whole thing fell over. >> amazingly only two feet of that tree went through the house. he says rain is likely to blame. some spectacular video just south of santa cruz. this is high tide yesterday. big waves right near popular restaurants like margaritaville. county officials warning people to be careful of strong rip currents and sneaker waves. if you get too close, that picture you take for facebook could be your last night. here is terry mcsweeney. >> staying on top of incoming storms by setting the home

and oakland, but they have far fewer flights to the area. in new jersey, governor chris christie is warning people be safe. >> be smart. just don't go on the roads. you don't need to. there's no reason to go out and have an adventure. if you absolutely have to go out during the storm, stay behind the salt trucks and plows, don't mess with them, please. >> as "the new york times" po t pointed out this morning, the best thing to do is nothing. stay home. five states including new jersey have declared a state of emergency. let's take a look at it from space. nasa releasing this image taken by one of the satellites showing the storm system stretching from texas all the way up the east coast. a heart breaking discovery on the coast. a body of a missing surfer

francisco, big city employees take bribes for city contracts? three former city employees face a long list of charges. keith jackson, a well known political consultant, zulu jones and another woman all three charged with bribery and money laundering. >> my office is committed to doing everything it can to insure the people's business is done with transparency and fairness and above all it's never for sale. >> the three have not been arrested. the d.a. says they'll have an opportunity to turn themselves in. in the south bay, torres will not escape the serious charges. he is accused of killing a morgan hill teenager in 2012. the lawyers for garcia torres claim the grand jury that indicted him was not given the

choice of indicting him on lesser charges. but the judge denied that request which search volunteers are still looking for the body for the missing girl. >> i feel no spirit. i feel a negative force. i was right behind him. i hope he gets what he has coming to him. >> now, the capital murder trial for garcia torres begins in april. police resume lamar to be dead. her body hasn't been found. a business deal that ended in a bitter breakup is back on again. santa clara county blamed turner construction for delays in the construction of valley medical center. so it fired the company and sued it, but the company is now decided to go with turner anyway. the county will pay $85 million to cover turner's costs and claims. the two sides say they will now meet for a month to determine when the project could and should and might be finished. much more today on the

and welcome back to you on this saturday. anthony is promising on and off sunshine, a little bit of rain as well. but we can see some blue skies at the golden gate bridge. it's official, san francisco's largest cab company has filed for bankruptcy. yellow cab made the move to help reorganize its finances. it says a spike in accident claims over the past year partially to blame for the company's current troubles.

it's been sued and can't afford the payouts. the taxi industry is struggling ride sharing companies like uber are growing. 300,000 drones have been registered in the first month after the faa's online registration went live. it requires all recreational drones that weigh up to 55 pounds to be registered to fly out doors. that includes the toy drone you got for christmas, drones you built yeourself. if you used your drone before december 21st and haven't registered yet the december february 21st. the government is working on registration for commercial use. well, from the dot com boom to the super bowl boom. real estate is getting hotter as the big game approaches. scott budman has the business of the super bowl. >> reporter: before watching the

game here, super bowl visitors can camp out here. if you have a lot of cash. >> we're looking to get $3,000 a night. >> reporter: joe just put his three bedroom on craigslist and air bnb. he's heard from potential renters. >> you know, when you're in the area, of where the super bowl is going to be you start to hear that talk. and then you start to think about it. >> reporter: according to search engine tripping.com vacation rentals will jump 150% during the week of the super bowl. and it's not just housing that's extra hot. people are selling rides around town, too. >> i just posted recently that if you want to ride to the best place let me know. and i have a wedding to pay for. >> reporter: think of it as the latest gold rush here in silicon valley. >> optimistic about someone taking you up on it?

>> absolutely. >> reporter: with lots of optimism and money to go around. in santa clara scott budman, nbc bay area news. let's check in with anthony slaughter this morning with a look at your weekend forecast. >> we had rain overnight. valley, not as much rain, but you saw rain overnight. it's all starting to move out of the region. you can see from the golden gate cam we still have clouds in the area. here's another shot from palo alto. you can see sunshine trying to make its way through the clouds. we'll see a good mix of sun and clouds today. here are our rainfall totals. morgan hill, over an 1.25. orinda, over half an inch. san jose .44, even in san francisco, just over .25 of inch and livermore under .25. we're looking at the ramifications of this storm system as it's moving through. it's kicking up all the waves

against the shoreline. we have a high surf advisory in effect until 10:00 p.m. this evening. winds will be 15-35 miles per hour at the coastline. look at the wave heights in san francisco, ocean beach, up to 15 to 20 feet. definitely going to be one of the days you want to stay away from the ocean. we do have rain still falling across parts of the east bay from concord down towards lafayette and oakland as well. some other showers making they wear through the altamonte pass. you will see rain there as well. here is the area of low pressure spinning across the oregon, california border. it will make its way out of the region today and that will mean increased sunshine. we're starting to see sun across the south bay. 52 here. 85 in the east bay, 54 in san francisco. later on this afternoon, we're not going to move much as the cold front swings through. we'll see a little bit of sunshine, lena little bit of brief passing showers and more sun, maybe another sprinkle or two.

that will be the general trend all day long. keep those umbrellas handy even though we'll have sunshine out there. here's the storm system moving through. we'll see sun as we get going through the day. more clouds than anything and the showers are going to continue to wind down. for the future cast into moetio, i think things will die down. one or two more brief showers across the south bay this evening, but it looks like once we get towards the afternoon things should start to wind down. the other thing that's going to be with us this morning, the winds will continue to be a factor across half moon bay, san francisco and the north bay, really the coastline is where we'll see the strongest winds anywhere from 20-30 miles per hour. here's good news. we have sunshine, and warmer temperatures in the forecast. completely different pattern than what we've seen all weekend. high pressure will set up across the rockies over the next couple of days. this is a look at thursday's temperatures. zoom all the way to thursday. yeah, it takes us a little while

thanks to the effort of three dedicated women and one lucky dog who is live baeretter life. garvin thomas has more about houdini the dog. >> this story is about an entire community that rallied around one small dog. a dog at you'll see who wasn't all that eager to be helped. >> such a pretty boy. such a pretty boy. >> playing hard to get every really work? depends who you ask, of course. but we're pretty sure if houdini the dog could talk, he'd say heck, yeah. >> my favorite is his ears. >> he played very, very hard to get. and won a whole slue of admirers in the process. carey, jennifer and lorry. >> i'm going to get you no matter what it takes. >> it was back in november that

houdini first showed up when sightings of the stray began trickling in to the all animals facebook group. it fell with these three all with experience in animal rescue to lead the effort to bring houdini in from the cold. >> because he would have died. he was dying. >> but we felt it was dire we get him. he was getting skinnier and skinnier. we could see injuries on him. >> this is where he would frequent. >> capturing the dog was much easier said than done. >> he got the name houdini because heap would appear and disappear. >> even times they were almost close enough to touch him. houdini would get away. >> he's amazingly smart. >> for two months, they played a game of cat and mouse with this dog. >> i was like -- sometimes up until like 4:00 in the morning and i was just in my car, freezing and i had binoculars looking at all the little areas.

>> and all the while, the story of houdini grew in morgan hill. hundreds started following the adventure on social media. offering help. sharing sightings. and cheering on the rescuers. >> this is a very passionate community for the animals. >> suddenly saw houdini. >> which is why there were a whole a lot of people who were thrilled to hear earlier this month that jennifer kayla and lo lorey cornered him. >> we had a celebratory moment. we were so happy. oh, my god. it was so amazing. >> all three happy, knowing while they can't save all the unwanted dogs out there. they could save this one. >> he will never be on the streets again. that's not going to happen. >> for those who would like to continue following houdini's story, including updates on when he's available for adoption,

a comprehensive list of guidelines meanwhile for a controversial new law, the california medical association listed legal and medical steps for doctors involved in assisted suicide. the law took effect this year allows terminally ill patients in california to end their own lives. doctors are protected from liability as long as they follow the requirements. >> doctors don't jump on this band wagon. a doctor's job is to heal. this is a new place for them to be. the assisted suicide debate came in the forefront in the cay of brittany maynard a bay area woman who had terminate cancer and moved to oregon to end her life. oregon had an assisted suicide law and california did not. it's been two years since the u.s. supreme court overturned a law that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

and this past summer gay marriage became legal. attorneys for a local widower say it's not stopping pension plan leaders from using the law to get out of paying benefits. the man is now suing and we have his story. >> robert and top got married in 2008. >> reporter: four years after tom died of a terminal brain disease, his husband, robert is trying to collect. conwell was a union man and worked as a telecommunications engineer for hilton san francisco for 30 years. he and his husband robert pritchard applied for disability pension benefits together after tom first got sick. >> mr. conwell passed away in 2012 and mr. pritchard was denied spousal benefit because the couple was in a same-sex marriage. he was denied the benefit even though the plan defined spouse as the person to whom a passport is legally married.

>> reporter: they're trying to get the $900 a month he says he's old. >> he was getting letters saying his husband was considered single. >> reporter: the pension plan and its board of trusties are involved who are using the defensive marriage act to avoid paying. even though it was deemed unconstitutional in 2013. >> it's very clear that it's been unconstitutional for two years. to rely it on when it never barred payment in the first place doesn't make sense. >> reporter: if this wasn't a same sex couple this would be a different story. >> tom was approved for a disability pension. if he had been married to a woman it would have been a joint pension. because he was married to aman he was treated as single. >> we've left several messages with the pension plan and they were unavailable for comment. a developing story out of las vegas.

coach steve curry from a leave of absence. he was back on the bench for the first time since winning the nba championship in june. the warriors head man healthy and ready to roll after suffering complications from an off season back surgery. despite the coach's absence golden state has the best record in the league after 43 games and they didn't miss a beat. how embarrassing would it be if they lost? look at that three shot. the warriors led from start to finish. steph curry led. golden state beats the pacers 110-122. >> oracle gave him a nice standing ovation and welcomed him back in good style. he looked comfortable and energetic. >> in his understated style.

over the east bay through the altamonte pass if you're headed towards tracy over the next couple hours you'll run into the showers. the area of low pressure is making its way out of the region. once it scoots out, we'll see more sunshine as the day goes along. it's all about the cloud cover and temperatures are mild. back into the low 50s. we're seeing sunshine in the peninsula. same deal for the south bay and golden gate bridge. temperatures will stay cool, mid 50s for daytime highs. jackets probably a good idea. even the umbrellas because we'll still hang on to the possibility of a few brief passing showers through the day, all the way until the afternoon. so there's the storm system. you can see sitting right on top of the california oregon border. as we get going through the day, the clouds will push off towards the east and spotty showers will move out of here as well. the future cast as you put that into motion, lunchtime, widely scattered rain. it won't be done with showers. by this afternoon, things start to wind down. we'll have a few showers across the south bay and the higher

terrain across the santa cruz mountains. the other thing to keep in mind, we saw winds 20-30 miles per hour in our inland locations. we will see calm winds for the south bay. the coastline along with the high tides will make for dangerous conditions along the coastline today. half moon bay around this afternoon you'll see wind gusts up to 20, 30 miles per hour. we're done with the rain this week it's all about the sunshine. temperatures will start to warm. high pressure will push the jet stream to the north all of our storms will be affecting the pacific northwest. temperatures will be allowed to warm quite a bit. a 15 degree jump from today to wednesday. look at that by wednesday back to 70. same deal for the east bay valleys. mid to upper 60s by tuesday and wednesday. san francisco it will be much more mild.

and welcome back to you on this fine saturday morning. you are looking at a live picture just outside the ferry building in san francisco. yes, they are busy building up the super bowl city. a reminder you will not be able to drive through the area on the embarcadero or near market street near the ferry building for quite some time to come. well, he is being called the armed and dangerous hefty

heister. the fbi says this man has robbed eight banks throughout northern california since the beginning of last month. many of the robberies in the sacramento area. but police say he hit a bank last week in the east bay. he's hit in pleasant hill. if you recognize that suspect, call police. a car break in epidemic in san francisco. new numbers show a sharp spike in car burglaries this past year. it was already bad. last year there were 26,000 car burglaries in san francisco. that's 34% increase from 2014 when it was a ridiculously high 19,000. the statistics follow a report from our investigative unit a few months ago which showed a sharp rise in this type of crime. it also shows it's happening every day of the week in every part of the city. we found the problem is not just in san francisco, in fact, happening all over the bay area. we have incredible pieces of art across the bay area. some say one of the most important pieces is kind of

tucked away. "today in the bay" joe risotto jr. shows how technology and devotion are teaming up to get more eyes on it. >> reporter: art can show up in some of the darnedest places. follow the signs through city college you'll end up in front of what many call a masterpiece. >> diego painted this mural. >> reporter: adorning the vast walls of the theater is a colorful fresco that was painted 75 years ago. >> actual painting took four months. >> reporter: 50 years ago the murl moved to the college and ended up here. >> the upside is the murl can be seen. the downside is you can't get far enough away from it to see the dual alt. >> reporter: for two decades retired city college physics professor has watched over the mural. >> i'm the historian on the mural. this is diego rivera right here.

we want to give you another live lo welcome back, everyone. let's take you out live another live look at san francisco. road closures are happening now folks. crews are building, you can see them the super bowl city. this is at the corner of washington and the embarcadero. hundreds of thousands of people local and tourists will experience the flavor of this big event. let's show you a map. this is squeezed between the ferry building and the streets around the embarcadero. you see the center there, that's going to be transformed into the nfl experience. after a week of turmoil because of the lack of diversity in the oscar nominations, the academy is responding with sweeping reforms. among the new rules an academy member's voting status will last ten years and can only be reviewed or renewed rather if the member has been active over that decade. those who are not active will become emeritus members, meaning
