>> i'm sam brock. the strategy this morning, bundle up and enjoy this day. we have one more kari. >> we do. temperatures very warm especially in the south bay. another one that feels like spring, but we're about to head back to winter. as we start out now it's in the mid-40s in the north bay, as well as the south bay and highs today reaching 64 degrees in san francisco. we will start to see some scattered rain moving into the north bay while the rest of the bay area stays dry and we're looking at 65 degrees in the tri-valley. we'll talk about that weekend rain that's coming up in a few minutes. let's see how the roads are flowing now with mike. >> karia little concerned about that zipper truck moving across the golden gate bridge. it took them just a couple of minutes and got back on the move, again, clearing towards the north side. no problems here and no problems to or from that north bay commute. visibility is great all around the map and no major incidents. there's a look at your freeways and the little orange you see

typically indicating fog. that is way over in stockton and not a problem for the local commute. back to you. >> thank you very much. breaking news overnight. a neighbor who left on edge as police spent the morning tracking down high-speed chase suspects in the south bay. police canvassed the area of kamerer in san jose overnight right near rocketship elementary school. stephanie chuang is live in sunnyvale where the chase started. a busy morning for sunnyvale police. >> absolutely. good morning to you, laura. what we know at this point is both scenes are clear. we're talking about two different incidents here and at least two suspects or one of the suspects booked here at sunnyvale pd. investigating earlier a first o home invasion robbery. south of the central expressway. there was a home invasion reported around midnight at the wildwood manor apartment complex. also reports that someone may have been shot, but trying to get information on that. now, about an hour later, sun

sunnyvale police tried to pull over a large, dark suv some time after 1:00 this morning. the driver, though, did not stop and that was the start of a high-speed pursuit and chp got involved and so did san jose pd. the driver exited either 101 or off 680. this is about 13 miles later and police say three people ditched the suv and ran off. chp, sunnyvale focused their search around bab creek which runs in that neighborhood. we're finally first able to find two people, one male and one female. now, we are trying to work on getting more information. again, a very busy morning for sunnyvale pd. they don't even have anyone here to answer the calls right away. so, we'll work on the information and pass it on to you throughout the morning. live here in sunnyvale, stephanie chuang. >> we'll hear from you in less than 30 minutes, thank you, stephanie. riot gear snatched from an

east bay b.a.r.t. station and now people are concerned what a thief might do with that gear. bob redell joining us from our conra costa county newsroom. >> good morning to you, sam. this was located in the police storage locker room located inside the b.a.r.t. parking garage. police think an employee might have accidentally left one of the doors to the locker wide open, provideniing an opportuni for a thief to peek in there and grab about $1,000 worth of police gear. the theft took place between 2:00 monday afternoon and 10:00 tuesday morning. police did provide a list of what was stolen. the list includes a riot helmet, gas mask and a b.a.r.t. police jacket with patches and uniform pants and boots. and this theft races concerns that this kind of equipment is now out there on the streets. >> everybody around here should be aware. it is kind of, you know,

alarming that stuff like this is happening. >> b.a.r.t. police have not released a description of what this suspect might look like and also not clear to us whether he or she was captured by a surveillance camera. b.a.r.t. has come under criticism for decoy surveillance cameras on its trains, but the transit agency is now going to change that pall sxaes make sure that all the surveillance cameras on their trains are real and are working. this comes after somebody was shot and killed on one of their trains in recent weeks. reporting live here, bob redell "today in the bay." do you recognize these guys? san jose police recently released a video of four men who are wanted for stealing from a nike store last month. happened several days before christmas. police say they left in a bronze hyundai and they have not made any arrests. a tourist robbed in the middle of the day at one of the most famous lookout points in san francisco.

fortunately, this coming as millions of people desnding on the bay area for super bowl l. police say the victim was taking in the views of the city when all of a sudden she was attacked. >> down the hill she was met by two suspects who approached her, maced her and proceeded to rob her. >> this is not the first incident to happen there. on the contrary, police say that robberies are becoming a major issue for that neighborhood. now they're putting officers in undercover units to try to combat the crime problem. we're inching our way towards super bowl l at levi stadium and san jose police are ready to prove how they plan to handle the super bowl crowds. officers will hold an event today including a s.w.a.t team demonstration along with a canine presentation which will show how the dogs can detect bombs at airports. in the meantime, san francisco extra security measures already in place there. metal deittectors, fences and

lots of police will be at security checkpoints. and by saturday, bags will be restricted to 18 by 18 inches. san francisco's police chief says there's more, there's more than one safe guard he wants, but he may not get it. he wants a no-fly zone. >> because it's not my call. if it was my call, we'd have restricted air space right now. >> the faa says san francisco's emergency operation center has plans for 40 different emergency scenarios. authorities will also monitor social media and coordinate federal, state and local first responders, including the national guard. countdown continues. there are now just ten days until super bowl l. the countdown to the super bowl. the count up on our temperatures otoday. kari saying maybe don't let the colder start fool you. >> you will need a heavier jacket as you start the day heading out the door. later on this afternoon, it will be very much like yesterday. it was so nice. and now it's 40 degrees in the east bay and 44 degrees in the south bay and we drop in to get

a closer look, we also had some upper 30s in a few spots like downtown, as well as gilroy and san martin where now it's in the upper 30s there. into the afternoon, once again, highs to theto upper 60s. and 62 in napa and brentwood 63 degrees and danville today looking at 67 degrees. so, we'll talk more about what to expect as that rain moves in this weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes but mike has a heads up for b.a.r.t. riders. >> first reported as a delay and now a full stop and this is the oakland b.a.r.t. station at the coliseum. this is just north of the closure. we'll show you on the map, not an exciting map, but i do want to show you on the b.a.r.t. system. folks familiar with the colors will know comes up towards hayward and somewhere between the fremont and bay fair stations, reports of some equipment problem on the tracks and that's causing the trains

never. it all all about moderator megyn kelly. >> more about him not wanting to answer tough questions as the iowa caucuses become near. in the last three hours we got new poll numbers showing in iowa likely caucus goers don't seem to mind trump's position. 32% say trump is their man and cruz gets 25% of those likely caucus goers. rubio 18% and ben carson now down to 8%, that's according to nbc news/"wall street journal" marist poll. you might hear in the distance that trump is walking out to the adele song "rolling in the deep" and being a no show tonight is certainly a big gamble, but one that may pay off. those 3,000 voters were polled between sunday and tuesday. so, while all of this fox debate drama was playing out, trump

right next to warriors owner joe laka. the two making the announcement today and warriors mvp steph curry also expected to be on hand. 5:15. verizon has until this afternoon to get rid of a big ad in san francisco. the sign sits on two sides of the four embarcadero high rise. this type of ad is illegal under city rules and the city attorney wants it it down. he sent a letter to verizen and the manager of the building saying if the sign does not come down, the city will sue to have it removed immediately. super bowl committee spokesperson says they're working to modify theers. silicon valley leader wants to give a whole lot of people a fair amount of money. >> a basic income. no strings attached. scott mcgrew, how would it work? >> we know the people who will get the money will be under a lot of observation by scientists. sam altmon who created the tech incubator wants to give someone or a group of someones a basic

switch. now, as we take a look at the forecast. it's coming up at the bottom of the screen. that seven-day and you'll see what i was talking about with those temperatures getting much cooler. well, it's cool now. it's degrees in the east bay and as we drop in now on the north bay, temperatures are in the mid-40s as you head oout the door. in san francisco, going throughout the day, we start out at 50 degrees at 8:00 and then the clouds start to clear out. we'll get some sunshine today and another beauty as we see those high temperatures reaching near 60 degrees. but, yes, our weather is about to change. all because of this. this cold front that is moving closer and will bring in some rain for the north bay today. and most likely for the next 24 hours just over the north bay where we see the off and on showers. starts to sink to the south as we go into tomorrow afternoon. the rest of the bay area seeing the scattered showers all throughout the day and then it starts to wrap up early saturday morning and in between we will have some very significant

occupiers in appearances yesterday.t court a protest leader and his fellow occupiers in oregon made their first court appearances yesterday. bundy and seven others currently charged with one count each conspiracy to injure a police officer. they were arrested on tuesday night after a confrontation with federal agents that left a protester dead. bundy's lawyer urged remaining protesters to go home and let the fight continue in the court system. the armed occupy protest has been going on now for almost a month. a hearing will be held tomorrow to figure out if those arrested will be released. five gang members are under arrest in connection with a jail break in orange county. the orange county sheriff says

the five arrested are connected to one of the three men who escaped last week. the sheriff says more arrests are coming and prisoners escaped last friday. they cut their way into a series of plumbing ton ittals and repelled down a wall. the county is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to their capture. the men were awaiting trial on crimes ranging from kidnapping to murder. a follow up now on the three sulfuric acid three train cars that derailed in martinez last week. a report followed by the environmental health department revealed eco services, the company that owns the cars did not report the incident until three hours after it happened. however, eco services says it notified union pacific within 15 minutes. although it does not have to since nothing actually spilled out of the cars. the derailment may have been caused by a brake failure. the california public utilities commission now investigating. a long, promised plan to require new warnings for cell

phone buyers has a green light in berkeley. at least temporarily. forcing retailers to warn customers aradiation levels when a phone sits too close to your body. cell phone companies went to court over the issue calling it unconstitutional and wanted an injunction. the federal judge yesterday lifted that injunction allowing a modified warning to be issued starting immediately. the actual case is still working its way through the court. at 5:26. coming up next, breaking overnight. a high-speed chase leads to an-out manhunt for suspects in a south bay neighborhood. plus, gone without a trace. the search for a stolen riot gear taken from a b.a.r.t. police locker. joining us. i'

incidents. 13, 14 miles apart. a high-speed chase that went through many different cities. the first is the report of a home invasion robbery that was at 20 north matilda avenue and that's just south of the central expressway. it was called in around midnight with a report, also, that someone might have been shot. police, you know, did not make any arrests in that. now, about an hour later, around 1:00 this morning sunnyvale police tried to pull over a large, dark suv and the driver sp sped off instead of stopping. the chp got inlved as did police in san jose. that's because where the driver exited either off of 101 or 680. again, about 13 miles away. investigators say three people ditched that suv and ran off. we're talking about chp,

sunnyvale focused on a search that focus around bab creek and first found two people. one male and one female. likely police are interviewing the people here at the headquarters and we're trying to get more details. police force very slammed right now waiting to hear back from the desk sergeant. we'll pass on the info when we get it. >> thank you, steph. 5:32. b.a.r.t. police the victim of the crime and the riot gear was stolen from an east bay b.a.r.t. station. bob redell is live in our contra costa newsroom with details on all it all happened. >> good morning to you there, laura. police think that one of the employees accidentally left open thor to to one of their storage lockers. now, if you're not familiar and you probably be, but there are storage lockers located in the concord b.a.r.t. parking garage. one door was left open and earlier in the week, whoever it was, a thief, saw that. and took the opportunity. they went in there and grabbed about $1,000 worth of gear.

the report also says hlebo admitted to getting in a fight with the victim and even told the family member he killed myrick and disposed of the body in the ocean. myrick's body has not yet been found. >> i would still like to hold a little bit of hope that we could find him, but the likelihood of that is very slim to none. >> the family is looking for volunteers to help in the search for myrick's body. they have been meeting every morning at 8:00 a.m. and searching until after dark. >> an emotional search there. 5:34 right now. happening today, a san jose man accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old son is expected to be in court. police arrested manuel lopez on tuesday two weeks after that child died. investigators say autopsy results showed signs of sexual abuse and that lopez was allegedly linked to the crime. 5:34. happening today, many may not even realize the problem exists but senate lawmakers are concerned about michildren being placed with convicted criminals.

a recent ap investigation found at least 50 unaccompanied minors who fled central america to the u.s. wound up with victed criminals in private homes. there they were the victims of abuse. one whistleblower claims thousands of u.s. sponsors also have criminal histories. a senate subcommittee today will look at the problems and some of the weaknesses in federal child protection policies. decision 2016 and a first for this campaign season and that says a lot. a republican debate without donald trump. that's what is expected to play out tonight on a stage in iowa and many are wondering if trump's making the right decision. "today in the bay" chris san is tracking reaction this morning. skipping tonight's debate is definitely a risk, but it could be a calculated and smart one for trump. >> yeah. well, donald trump would have you believe that it really is all about his beef with the moderator and the network, but the republican rivals say his refusal to take the stage tonight is really more about him

the developments all morning because we know that trump takes all day long. >> you are so right. thanks so much. so do we. happening today angry homeless people and their supporters plan to protest what they call untreatment in san francisco. san francisco leaders have recently been talking about sort of a get tough policy on the homeless, especially with the upcoming super bowl. while tents are still a common sight in parts of the city, people living in the bay area claim that city workers recently dismantled their tents and took some of their property. among other things, organizers today plan to ask for those items back and be provided a safe place to live. a new system is in place for people on the peninsula tired of the noise coming from the san car and half moon bay airports. san mateo county leaders say the system is going to give residents more options when they decide to report a noise problem. now, folks can either call a hotline or go online to file a

complaint. previously people had to reach someone on the phone just to file that complaint. it is 5:38 right now. want to check the temperature before you head out the door and enjoy today. >> yes, a cool start but a warm finish as to our temperatures in the low o40s in the east bay and 47 degrees in san francisco. as we get a closer look, even some low 50s there in the mission district and pacific heights and right at 50 degrees and 42 degrees now in the north bay. as we look at these highs, it will be so nice this afternoon. up to 63 in los gatos and the castro at 64 degrees and santa rosa 60 degrees as the rain starts to move in this afternoon and in oakland 68 degrees and livermore a high of 60 deit gree . once again, this ends very quickly and we'll talk about that and what to expect this weekend. that's coming up, let's get an update now on the roadways with mike. >> san rafael, a steady flow of traffic and no major issues in novato all the way down to the

golden gate bridge. we look at your map and see the speed indicators and that green and at the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights are on. there's the backup there. folks for b.a.r.t. an additional issue. we heard about earlier problems between fremont and bay fair but i just got word that the dublin pleasanton line right along 580 that will have delays possible through castro valley because of more power issues there. watching for more reports of anything going on for the grid. meanwhile, fremont the traffic flowing to the south bay does pick up a little bit, but no problems. back to you. the super bowl gridlock will soon spread out sprawling to the south bay. well, people whalive and work near levi stadium are preparing for a major inconvenience in the coming days. starting on sunday, part of tasman drive right near the super bowl venue is closed for more than a week. some restaurants in that area are concerned that the closure will steer business away from them while others are stocking up. but everyone is preparing for a

start out the day and it will be, once again, a little bit chilly, but warming up nice. by 11:00, we're up to 57 degrees and low 60s by this afternoon and even some mid-60s as we see the sun peeking from behind those clouds. and our cloud cover will be increasing as this storm system approaches. we'll also start to see some rain moving into the north bay and that front will bring in some drastic changes for the weekend. we do start to see some of the showers in the north bay later on this afternoon into the evening. while the rest of the bay area sees some dry conditions and a mix of sun and clouds. by tomorrow, we see that rain getting heavier and still pouring on the north bay. and then it starts to spread to the south by the afternoon to evening hours and we'll see that rain off and on throughout the day on friday. and giving us a break on saturday. and it will bring in quite a bit rain for the north bay. and then look at how the rainfall totals, the expected rainfall totals drop off as you head south of oakland and san francisco. and if you're going to the era,

we are look at some pretty significant snow there. at least a foot in some spots. we may even see up to two feet in some of the summits. we'll be talking more about that coming up in a few minutes, but let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. >> kari, first the good news. the roads are doing great and bay bridge toll plaza and just off the berkeley curve. no problems for the span or north of there for the east bay or the north bay. we're looking over here towards a little slowing for hayward and we'll talk about that area for the roads and i want to divert over towards the rail. this system for the b.a.r.t. system. we heard about reports earlier of power issues for the bay mont and we have "limited train service" through castro valley on that blue line. i don't know what limited service means but talking about power issues there. just plan on some delays and we'll talk about more information. the rest of the line is going in and out of san francisco without delay and the road ways through that dublin, pleasanton area

at 5:56. a protest leader and his fellow occupiers in oregon made their first court appearances today. bundy and several others are charged with one count each of conspiracy to injure an officer. they arrested earlier this week after a confrontation with federal agents left a protester dead. bundy's lawyer urged remaining protesters to go home and let the fight continue in court. the armed occupy protest at a wildlife refuge has been going on for nearly a month. a hearing will be held tomorrow to determine if those arrested will be released. a protest leader and his
