good thursday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check that forecast right now with meteorologist kari hall. >> mostly clear skies and warming up again today. some of the bay area will start to get in on some showers. as we take a look at the north bay now, it's 44 it grees a s44 in the peninsula and highs reaching 46 degrees in the south bay. san francisco 64 degrees and the tri-valley up to 65. we start out with some fog there. some rain in the north bay later on today. we'll talk about all of that and a wet weekend for some of us coming up in a few minutes. let's see what's happening as we head out door with mike. >> no surprise but wae have the build around the bay. you know about the bay bridge toll plaza and the slowing for the hayward side of the san mateo bridge. we'll also show you san jose where the build starts for 101
6:31 am
and right here at 680 you see a good amount of slowing and the map will show you it's not that bad and your typicalern there and slowing for capital expressway and 85 now showing just of highway 17. also 880 south from hayward towards union city. 680 through pleasanton and slowing there. top of your screen, a car reported coming out of walnut creek and down diablo and tracking them through 680. back to you. >> thank you, mike. at 6:31. an update to breaking news. a busy morning for the normally eyet sunnyvale police department. just hours ago police involved in two sneptincidents. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuafg live at sunnyvale police headquarters with the latest on several investigations. steph? >> sam and laura, police have noted these two investigations. the first, of course, home invasion robbery. someone break in to steal while people are home and the second the high-speed chase.
6:32 am
if you look at the maps spans through several cities first starting in sunnyvale and then through santa clara ending in san jose. we're talking about 13, 14 miles away. sunnyvale investigators are still looking for the person or people behind the reported home invasion robbery that was at 220 north matilda avenue. that is the wildwood manor apartment complex just south of the central expressway and not clear which apartment was broken into. it was called in around midnight with the report that someone may have been shot. now, after 1:00 this morning, so about an hour later, sunnyvale police tried to pull over a large and dark suv and instead of stopping, that driver sped off the beginning of the high-speed pursuit that went on to southbound 101. the chp got involved as san jose police because that's the city where the driver and two passengers ended up ditching that suv near rocketship academy and if you're familiar with the area. now, these three agencies the

chp, sunnyvale police focused their search along that creek. they were able to first find two people. one male and one female. the search there was clear as of a couple hours ago. now, i just spoke with captain craig anderson. he said he'll get here around 7:00 this morning and will have a better update for us around that time. >> thank you, steph. 6:33. moving on to decision 2016. the last republican debate before the iowa caucuses is tonight. but this morning, the focus is on the one candidate vowing to sit out. front-runner donald trump says he will not take part in the showdown on fox. "today in the bay" kris sanchezes us and trump is taking to the airwaves to defend his position on the very network he's boycotting. >> how is that for a boycott? donald trump said without him the fox debate viewership would plummet and maybe there's something to that because in an interview with fox news anchor bill o'reilly, he ball but beggd
6:34 am
him tashow up and a personal favor. >> i was not treated well by fox. they out with this ridiculous pr statement drawn up by a child and a taunt. >> forget. go forward. answer the questions. look out for the folks. just want you to consider it. you owe me milk shakes. >> pretty sure he can buy his own milk shakes but at a campaign event yesterday you can hear that song there in the distance. it's the adele song "rolling in the deep." being a no show certainly is a gamble, but it may pay off. 3,000 voters polled between sunday and tuesday in an nbc news/"wall street journal" marit poll. the same time this whole fox debate was playing out. trump gained seven percentage points enough to pull ahead of ted cruz even with the margin of error. here are the standings. trump at 32% and cruz 25 and
6:35 am
rubio 18 and ben carson down to 8%. now, back to tonight's can bait. there will be one fewer candidate on the stage because donald trump is holding steady, but fox news confirms there will be no empty podium. trump's position seems to be if you don't like the hand you are dealt, then you just leave the table. >> he doesn't want to answer questions for the men and women of iowa about how his record doesn't match what he's selling. >> interesting side show. greatest show on earth. this is not a show. this is serious. >> now, instead of attending the debate, trump will hold an event to benefit veterans at drake university. ted cruz invited trump to a one-on-one on saturday and even booked a venue and we have to see if he seen shows up. the debate is 6:00 our time and bill o'reilly is not the only one trying to persuade donald trump to show up. nbc news is report say the fox news ceo called donald trump's
6:36 am
wife and his daughter to try to get them to persuade him to show up. sam and laura. >> which is interesting because he's taunting them about ratings and maybe there's some truth to all of that. thank you very much, kris. 6:36 right now. happening later today, vice president joe biden's moon shot to cure cancer. no long arshot in the dark because president obama is signing a memorandum to create a white house task force on cancer. the president is going to appoint biden to lead that panel. include representatives from more than a dozen different federal agencies. the dprup groups will have the first meeting next monday. also happening today, many may not realize the problem exists, but senate lawmakers are concerned about migrant children being placed with convicted criminals. the recent ap investigation found at least 50 unaccompanied minors who fled from central america to the u.s. over the past three years wound up with
6:37 am
convicted criminals in private homes. there they were victims of abuse. one whistleblower claims thousands of u.s. sponsors also have criminal histories. a senate subcommittee will look at the problem and some of the weaknesses in federal child protection policies. well, a new system is in place for folks on the peninsula tired of all the noise coming from san carlos and half moon bay airports. san mateo county leaders say this new system will give residents more options when they decide to report a noise issue. right now people can only call a hotline or will only be able to call aline or go online to file a complaint. previously, people had to reach someone on the phone specifically just to file that complaint. 6:37. do you recognize these guys? san jose police recently released a video of four men who are wanted for stealing from a nike store last month. it happened that west gate mall just several days before christmas. police say they left in a bronze hyundai. they have not made any arrests. right now the clock is ticking.

verizon has until this afternoon to get rid of a large ad in downtown san francisco. that sign sitting on two sides of the 4 embarcadero high rise. the problem this type of ad is illegal under city rules and the city attorney wants it taken down. he sent a letter to verizon and thejure of the building that says if the sign does not come down by today at 5:00, the city will sue to have it removed immediately. the super bowl committee spokesperson says they're working to modify those banners. jackie spear is calling for emergency funding to protect at-risk areas along the shoreline. she got a first-hand look at the waves that are eating away at the cliffs and homes in pacifica. >> and el nino is just like aer storm sandy except it happens over a greater portion of time. >> the dangerous conditions forced 40 people to move out of their homes, which are literally dangling on the cliff's edge. the erosion continues, so,
6:39 am
too, does the conditions that are causing it. right now let's get a check of the weather forecast from meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. an approaching storm system that will create high waves as we go into the weekend. right now we're still in thwith this dry weather for a little while longer. temperatures in san francisco ten deit grees cooler in the east bay and north bay now at 44 degrees. a closer look at the east bay. we even have some upper 30s. so, bundile up as you get the dy started and we'll take off those layers later on today. up to 65 degrees in gilroy and pacifica 70 degrees and ocean beach 61 degrees and 62 ina. oakland 6 8 degrees and pleasanton ohigh of 64 degrees. heading into the weekend it looks pretty wet at times and we'll talk about that timeline in less than ten minutes. >> things are calming down right now as far as the b.a.r.t. system reports go. back on time. minor delays possible for the fremont or the dublin pleasanton
