if this gamble paid off for donald trump. >> that's our top story this morning. donald trump going through on his promise to skip last night's republican debate but his presence was felt there early and often. at his own event, even return the admitted he's not sure how this plays with iowa voters when they caucus in three short days. we've got it covers with national correspondent peter alexander. pet peter, good morning. >> good morning, sava. it was compelling counter programming. but it was a big risk for donald trump. on stage he said he didn't want to be at his own event, that he does like debates but without him, the republican debate took on a decidedly different tone. as fox put it, he was the elephant not in the room. >> we love our vets. >> donald trump boycotting the debates. >> when you're treated badly you have to stick up for your own.

but not before suggesting his pregnant daughter could be his secret weapon here. >> ivanka, it would be so great if you had your baby in iowa. it would be so great. i'd definitely win. stand up, honey. >> reporter: so how will it play for donald trump? especially in the state where they take their politics very seriously? well, iowa caucus goers, will they be offended or stick with donald trump? those caucus goers have the final say monday night. willie and savannah? >> they do, indeed. peter alexander, thank you. let's bring this chucke ed ttod moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning. >> normally i would ask you who won the debate but today i'm going to say who won the night? did trump's big gamble pay off? >> you know, i think it did. and the reason i think it paid off, nobody on that debate stage was able to take advantage of the moment. i was surprised at how little beef that trump got on that stage. that was an opportunity for a couple of the front-runners to

come out and really go at trump. he wasn't there to respond and they chose not to do it. other than the stuff at the top, it was barely a light touch. so if you're trump, you're sitting there going "well, this was great, ted cruz and marco rubio, the two guys chasing me, ended up beating each other up and, oh, by the way, were the targets of everything else." one thing i did notice, without trump there, three people who trump has just obliterated in attacks, ben carson, jeb bush, and rand paul, all three of them had their best debate. >> chuck, a lot of people thought ted cruz specifically because he's running so close with donald trump in iowa would have a target on his back. how did he handle the pressure? >> i think he struggled with it early in particular. he was the one getting a lot of incoming. i think you could tell he liked sort of sharing that with donald trump. without trump there i thought he looked testy at times. his jokes fell a little flat. his little tweaking of the moderators didn't seem to go

over well so, look, i think he's still the guy that is the number-two guy here but he didn't do anything to grab trump and maybe even come out on top. if anything, rubio may be nipping at his heels a bit. this may be a closer three-way race than we thought. >> chuck todd, we will be watching. of course we'll have more from ay hey this sunday on "meet the press," including a conversation with senator ted cruz. >> as for the democrats, both hillary clinton and bernie sanders are making their final pushes in iowa ahead of monday's caucuses. nbc's andrea mitchell also in des moines for us this morning. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. the democratic side is also heating up as bernie sanders goes after hillary clinton for her fund-raising and what he calls her ties to wall street. kbe bernie sanders is on the attack, speaking to another roaring crowd in iowa thursday night. >> change is not easy and the opposition will be strong. >> reporter: and he's targeting

wall street in a new ad. >> how does wall street get away with it? millions in campaign contributions and speaking fees. >> reporter: an ad seen as a thinly veiled attack on hillary clinton. >> wall street spends huge amounts of money on campaign contribution skbls are you suggesting she's bought by wall street? >> i'm not suggesting anything at all. >> reporter: with just three days to go before the caucuses, clinton is trying to close the deal, even winning over a former trump supporter. >> you got my vote. >> i cannot tell you what that means to me. >> and connecting with one voter having trouble paying her bills. >> we have got to do more to help people. it's just not right. >> reporter: in iowa, one new poll shows she has a five-point lead with women and older voters throwing their support behind her. sanders is hoping young people and a growing organization will help him win on monday. >> we have 15,000 people in this state have that have volunteered at least one shift a day. >> reporter: clinton's people say their ground game is secure. >> we've seen strong support

across the state. >> reporter: at 74, sanders would be the oldest person ever elected president if he wins and thursday he released a medical report asserting he is in "very good health." >> you know what i'm thinking of doing? >> not with me! >> do i get involved with senior boxing, light heavyweight championship or run for? i decided to run for president. >> reporter: the one thing our poll shows is that hillary clinton has one advantage, her supporters tend to be more experienced caucus goers and more committed. and bernie sanders has to hope that these first time voters show up at the polls. only three days to go, savannah and willie? >> senator sanders might punch you, i know you can watch punch back! >> very nice technique, andrea. we are taking this show to iowa on monday. we will be live in des moines for the all-important caucuses.

>> we can tell you that donald trump's newest ally sarah palin will be joining us exclusively during that special edition of "today." moving on now to that ongoing occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in oregon. the fbi has just released video of this week's fatal shooting of the group's spokesperson. nbc's joe with fryer is on this story this morning. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the occupation still not over. four people remain at the refuge. meanwhile, the fbi is already releasing video from tuesday's deadly confrontation with leaders of the occupation, saying it wants to lay out an unfiltered view of what happened. when authorities decided to pull over and arrest members of the occupation as they drove two vehicles down a remote highway, an fbi plane was up above recording it all. the video shows a white truck driven by lavoy finicum sitting idle for nearly four minutes. during that time, the fbi says agents and state troopers were telling the occupants to surrender. instead the truck drove on.

one minute later it veered left to avoid a roadblock, nearly hitting an agent. finicum quickly exited, his hands in the air at first, but the fbi says on two occasions he reached his right hand toward a jacket pocket. that's when finicum was shot and killed. authorities say he had a loaded semiautomatic handgun in that pocket. >> as the video clearly shows, it was a reckless action that resulted in the consequences. >> reporter: but finicum supporters think he was not reaching for his gun. three weeks earlier, the arizona rancher said he'd rather die than go to jail. >> i have no intention of spending any of my days in a concrete box. >> reporter: during the highway confrontation, five occupiers were arrested, including the group's leader, ammon bundy, who, through his attorney, is now calling on those still at the refuge to turn themselves in. >> we do not need to do anything else at the refuge. the message has been made. >> reporter: the armed

occupation is rapidly dwindling with just four militants left and videos posted online they're seen sitting next a fire, even dancing, saying they'll only leave if they're not arrested. >> telling us, you know, it's safe to leave but it's not. >> reporter: roadblocks surrounding the refuge have moved closer to the occupation, the fbi says negotiators are working around the clock to try to bring this to a peaceful resolution. willie and savannah? >> joe fryer, thank you. now to a development overnight in the man hunt for three fugitives who escaped from a maximum facility jail in california. a woman who worked as a teacher under arrest and accused of helping them. >> reporter: the three inmates cut through steel, snaked along plumbing tiles then rappelled off this roof using bed sheets as rope. a jailbreak out of hollywood and now this twist. >> it is believed she provided

by critical planning tools that aided in their preparation for the escape. >> reporter: the sheriff's department says the jail english teacher had a relationship with inmate jose nairi, providing him with google maps that may have shown him the proof before the escape. the case a striking similarity to upstate new york's dannemora prison break. >> i did wrong. i deserve to be punished. >> reporter: where prison employee joyce mitchell admitted to having a "friendship" with two murderers before helping them bust out of prison. >> we know there was some type of relationship that developed but how far it went and whether it was physical or not, we're trying to confirm that. >> reporter: gone a week ago today week ago, one man was seen test driving this van before speeding away. investigators believe duong, nairi and jonathan thu may be living in the van together. >> we don't think they're outside of the tricounty area.

>> reporter: with ten now arrested, including gang members near little saigon, three miles from the orange county jail, investigators say they are one step closer to arresting the three inmates. minh wanted for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and torture, he may have pulled off a jailbreak few could have imagined. for "today," miguel almaguer, nbc news, santa ana, california. new fears in the u.s. and around the world over the zika virus this morning. health officials predicting up to four million people could be infected in brazil this year alone. as we first told you on thursday, the world health organization plans to hold an emergency meeting to discuss zika spread. nbc's tom costello has been talking to the experts about this. it's scary, tom, good morning to you. >> the meeting is all about decide whether to declare this outbreak a global emergency, but on the ground, that's exactly what they're already dealing with. world health experts call it a rapidly exploding crisis south

of the u.s. border and a tiny mosquito carrying the zika virus is thought to be responsible. so far, an estimated 42, 00 babies born in brazil with microcephaly, abnormally small heads and brains. on thursday, we were with a new mom in brazil as she took her two-month-old, born with microcephaly, to the doctor. >> the level of concern is high as is the level of uncertainty. >> reporter: with travel advisories now in effect, the uncertainty exends to the u.s. but experts believe the risk of a similar large-scale outbreak here is low, largely because very few americans live in the kind of mosquito breeding grounds we see in brazil, surrounded by trash and stagnant water. >> and people typically have air conditioning and good screens that limit their exposure. >> reporter: so far, the cdc is aware of 31 cases of zika infection in the u.s., another 19 in puerto rico and one in the u.s. virgin islands. all of the victims contracted the virus while traveling abroad.

we don't know how many involved pregnant women. this morning, health departments across the country are under orders to report any suspected zika cases to the cdc. while women who are pregnant or could become pregnant are urged to avoid traveling to zika hot zones. >> it was going to be our last hurrah before we had the baby in june. >> reporter: gina park and her husband already had their tickets to mexico next month. now they canceled. >> we just probably couldn't live with ourselves if something ever did happen. >> reporter: here in the u.s., the mosquitos that can carry zika are most common in gulf states. they're not carrying it yet, by the way, and they're only active in daylight hours. we have another added layer of protection in this country -- the seasonal cold that keeps mosquitos in check: back to you. >> tom costello with the latest there. thank you. >> a stretch of oregon highway closed after a massive sinkhole opened up in the road. take a look at this video on highway 101 in the coastal town of harbor. the sinkhole swallowed up both

the northbound and southbound lanes. luckily, nobody was hurt there. transportation officials have set up a detour that will be in place through next week at the least. back to that video we showed you at the top of the show, you probably can't get it out of your mind, 18-time olympic gold medalist michael phelps with a performance of no other. this at an arizona state sun basketball game. he was the guest behind the curtain of distraction. it t idea is to distract players during free throws. he sported a swim cap, bow ties and the speedo. it worked. the oregon state player missed both foul shots. >> wow. >> phelps has been training for olympic games in rio. he has plans to work as an assistant swim coach once he retires. the devils won the game by 18 points. >> that's a running gag at arizona state. there's a study done, it's good for 1.7 points. >> it's worth. >> it and with michael phelps it goes up.

story in san francisco... ==topvo== that's where crews this . a developing story in san francisco where crews are resuming demolition of a home in the sherwood forest neighborhood near mount davidson. city inspectors ordered an emergency demolition after someone noticed a huge crack in the home's foundation. the home recently sold for $2 million and the new owners hadn't even moved in yet. the city has ordered five neighbors to have their homes be inspected before the next round of rain moves through, which is supposed to happen today. >> we will see scattered rain off and on all day today.

we're back now at 7:30. it's friday, january 29th, 2016. that's a happy crowd out there. i dare say it's a happy crowd at this table. friday is good. here's a look at the headlines. an english teacher working at a county jail is arrested for allegedly helping inmates escape. the 44-year-old woman is believed to have given maps after having been involved with one of the men. >> it was a student-teacher relationship initially and developed into a closer relationship, where she began providing him information. >> the escapees remain on the loose. investigators believe they may be living out of a stolen van.

contacted them. >> we have a whole new generation who never saw this take place and is now going to see this series and assume that everything in this series is fact. and that's very troubling to me. >> reporter: another player in the real-life drama, nicole's best friend, kris jenner. the kardashian family matriarch opening up to "people" magazine about watching her late ex-husband, robert, serve on o.j.'s defense team. she deserves the trial as a very stressful time. telling the magazine, i couldn't wrap my head around the fact that she'd been killed in such a horrific, violent way. adding that she's never gotten over the loss of nicole. >> situation is very worrisome. >> reporter: despite the concern, audiences are once again expected to tune in to watch o.j. maybe even the man itself. >> i don't know exactly how he feels about it or whether he would do an interview afterwards or want to talk about it. but he shrugs it off and shakes

story in san francisco... a very good morning to you. 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. in san francisco, crews are resuming demolition of a home in the sherwood forest neighborhood near mt. davidson. city inspectors this week ordered an emergency demolition after someone noticed a huge crack in the home's foundation. the home sold for $2 million and owners had not moved in. it slid more than a foot in just a few days. other homeowners are to have their homes inexpected before the next rain comes in, which is supposed to come in today. in the south bay, the traffic is starting to break up north 101 at aix of 680. we had early crashes at oakland

taking a look at the headlines. nissan is recalling 846,000 altima midsize cars for the third time to fix the same problem. it covers the 2013 through 2015 model years. nissan says the main hood latch can rust, allowing the hood to pop up while the cars are moving. in the two earlier recalls, dealers adjusted the latches and applied a lubricant, but if it wasn't applied evenly, the problem apparently can persist. a harvard study finds that women with sleeping problems may have a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. researchers analyzed health data or more than 130,000 women. they found a diabetes risk up to four times greater for women who had trouble falling or staying asleep, who snored, had sleep

apnea or got less than six hours a night. federal trade commission is launching an effort to help victims of identity theft. its website will allow you to create a recovery plan. victims can describe their case in detail and they'll offer steps to take to get back your identity and limit the damage. the web address is identity theft.gov. a hazard prompted the recall of 1.5 million shower rugs. the recall involves aqua rugs with four plastic suction cups, sold in beige and clear. they received 60 reports of consumers falling in the shower or the bathtub while on the rugs. consumers should stop using the rugs and contact tristar products to obtain a free replacement. they were sold at bed bath and beyond, dollar general and other stores, as well as amazoamazon.
