it's tuesday, february 2nd. coming up on "early today." after spending hours in a dead heat with bernie sanders, hillary clinton is named the apparent winner in the iowa caucuses. and ted cruz deals a humbling defeat to donald trump. "early today" starts now. iowa voters have spoken and after months of battling ted cruz is the winner of the republican iowa caucus. and hillary clinton is the apparent winner for the democrats in an historic close outcome. clinton by the tiniest of margins in a race so close that at three sites clinton won by a coin toss. literally. after results were at a stalemate they simply flipped a

coin to decide who to support. and after landing in new hampshire we got bernie sanders reaction. >> capable of running and winning and [inaudible]. we look forward to doing well here in new hampshire and after that we're off to nevada and south carolina where i think we're going to surprise a whole lot of people just as we did in iowa. >> and do you anticipate contesting the -- >> honestly we just got off the plane and we're not even thinking about it. >> thank you very much sir. >> okay. >> followed closely by cruz and rubio. and of the 30 gop iowa delegates ted cruz won eight, trump and rubio seven. carson three. rand paul, jeb bush, carly fiorina, john kasich and huckabee each won one. and tracy potts joins us with

the latest. >> what we knew shortly after the caucuses closed was that ted cruz had sailed to victory here over donald trump. what we didn't know until early this morning because it was such a close race, hillary clinton has now been declared the apparent win for for democrats. >> as i stand here tonight, breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you iowa. >> early this morning after counting all night, hillary clinton was declared the apparent winner in an historically close race. >> iowa, thank you. >> less than half a percentage point, just a few delegates separate clinton and bernie sanders. >> what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. >> ted cruz quoting the bible claiming the biggest victory ever in iowa caucus history. >> tonight, iowa, has proclaimed

to the world morning is coming. morning is coming. >> donald trump landed in second place. barely ahead of marco rubio. >> we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever the hell they throw up there. >> rubio a close number three was the first to declare victory here. >> this is the moment they said would never happen. >> all the candidates pledging to battle it out in new hampshire and beyond. turnout was a big concern and there were so many people at one point here in des moines that one of the caucus sites ran out of registration forms for people trying to sign up on the spot. dara. >> thanks so much for that. it is we mentioned it was a dead heat throughout most of the night but hillary clinton gave what sounded like a victory speech late last night long before any winner was announced. >> so as i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief,

thank you iowa. i want you to know i will keep doing what i have done my entire life. i will keep standing up for you. i will keep fighting for you. i will always work to achieve the america that i believe in where the promise of that dream that we hold out to our children and our grandchildren never fades. >> meanwhile bernie sanders stunned at the iowa caucuses by having hillary clinton feel the bern until the very last minute. >> but no president can do what has to be done alone. and that is why what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution.

a political revolution that says when millions of people come together including those who have given up on the political process. they are so dismayed and so frustrated with what goes on in washington. with young people who before had never been involved in the political process. when young people and working people and seniors begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly enough is enough. >> so how did cruz pull off the victory? the nbc entrance poll shows cruz drew strong support from those who call themselves very conservative and got 32% from evangelicals. 37% of voters who say they are looking for a candidate who shares their values supported cruz in his victory speech cruz thanked courageous conservatives for their support.

>> tonight is a victory for the grassroots. tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this great nation. when the washington loibists settled on other candidates in this race. when the media in one voice said a conservative cannot win, nationwide over 800,000 contributions poured in to ted cruz.org as courageous conservatives said yes we can. >> precaucus polls showed trump in the lead. so what happened? trump campaign insiders both ted cruz and marco rubio had better ground games and it showed. while adding that second place means trump is a loser in iowa. while afterwards trump gave easily his shortest campaign

speech and appeared humbled. >> so on june 16th when we started this journey there were 17 candidates. i was told by everybody do not go to iowa. you could never finish even in the top ten. and i said but i have friends in iowa. i know a lot of people in iowa. i think they really like me. let's give it a shot. they said don't do it. i had i have to do it. and we finished second. and i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. i'm really honored. i want to congratulate ted and i want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates. >> even though without taking the top spot trump remains as confident as ever. >> we will go on to get the republican nomination. and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever the hell they throw up there. not everyone is as positive. check out today's cover of the

new york daily news. even though he came in third marco rubio's campaign is on a positive trajectory heading into the new hampshire. the nbc news entrance poll shows 2% -- 29% who made up their minds the last few days also supported rubio. speaking last night rubio exuded confidence. >> so this is the moment they said would never happen. if i am our nominee, and i will be our nominee thanks to what you have done here in this great state. when i am our nominee we are going to unify this party and we are going to unify the conservative movement. when i'm our nominee we are going to win iowa and we are going to win this election for the country. >> meanwhile there were campaign casualties last night.

democratic candidates martin o'malley and republican candidate mike huckabee both suspended their campaigns. and perhaps it all wrapped up just in time. bill it sounds like there is severe weather heading into the iowa. >> all the candidates and media, as soon as it was declared they got out as fast as they could. because there is a blizzard heading to the area. for the northwestern corner of iowa. and last night in boulder in denver they picked up almost a foot of snow. the next step is during the day today. the winds increase and weir going start to see blizzard conditions developing. the bands of snow. interstate 80 from des moines to omaha. claps of thunder, and it's snowing one to two inches per hour and that is about to i arrive in des moines shortly.

things iowa. hillary clinton has been named the apparent winner of the iowa caucuses after being in a dead heat with bernie sanders most of the night. and on the republican side, ted cruz won 28% of the votes leaving donald trump behind by 4 points but don't discount marco rubio who is trailing donald trump by just one point. the night also brought about campaign suspensions from each party. governor martin o'malley and former governor mike huckabee both gracefully bowed out of the race. and that leaves two democrat candidates and ten republicans in the running. and pucnctuation tawny pennsylvania. and the furry prognosticator whisper whispered, no he did not see his shadow. which means an early spring. >> so an early spring. and hey.
