"today in the bay" continues now. buterse fir, first, we want go good morning to you. >> we saw reporters out there with umbrellas and seen some rain passing through the bay area. >> we all need the umbrellas and a warm coat to go along with it. we have some very chilly temperatures as this system rolls through the bay area, it is bringing a cool rain and, at times, we have seeing bouts of heavier downpours and some snow now for some of our hilltops. as we go into the morning, looking at all the microclimate temperatures and the low to mid-40s, but reaching into the mid-50s today. still cooler than average and we warm up significantly as we go through the week. i'll detail that a look at our next chance of rain coming o cfo let's check in now with mike to see how it it looks as you head

through the east bay. >> well, kari, you're talk about calmer conditions and wet roadways. that's what we see on the live shots, as well. here's the bay bridge. yesterday this camera, emoryville camera was shaking like crazy. trap and glow for the lights because a lot of moisture, drizzle. you're okay getting into the city. from the north bay getting into the city across the golden gate bridge. showing you how wet the roadway is many patches around the bay. now we'll get to the maps. not a lot of problem as far as incidents reported and a bay bridge backup because the metering lights are on and coming across carquinez and earlier crash around the san mateo bridge. light traffic flow right now. the south bay starts that build north 01 and north 87 just in the last couple of minutes we see speeds dipping down just below 60. look 85 is seeing patches with heavier rain over the last few minutes and as kari said, an indicator of what you're dealing with all around the bay. we'll send it back to you.

>> thanks so much. decision 2016 now talking a little politics and why not. after iowa many of us went to bed not knowing the democratic winner for last night's iowa caucuses. now, we do. "today in the bay" chris san tracking all the reaction. hillary clinton edged out bernie sanders and what is being called a historically close race. >> it is a historically close race and you can call it a statistically dead heat. not the kind of voting we do in november. this is a caucus and you might remember from back in middle school days when you learned about the iowa caucuses, it is a little different. much more informal. some of those contestsdeit ed ed issed by a coin flip when they were tied. hillary clinton did squeak out that win over bernie sanders in iowa. look how close it it was. the percentages equal at 50% each. the numbers in parentheses.
6:03 am
it was a historically close race but anything but to start. back when they started in april, clinton actually had a 40-point lead in iowa. >> so as i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa! >> iowa, thank you! >> ted cruz also thanking iowa, as well. his win much more definitive. he got 28% of the caucus goers there. donald trump four percentage points back. marco rubio just one point behind donald trump. rubio's surge is just one surprise of the night. the other is that donald trump, who has always said if you're not a winner, are a loser, that he was glad to be second. >> we finished second and i to tell you something, i'm just honored. i'm really honored. >> this is the moment they said would never happen. >> tonight, iowa has proclaimed to the world morning is coming.
6:04 am
morning is coming. >> now the next contest is the. the primary that is happening a week from today. but there are two fewer candidates in that pool. democrat martin o'malley pulled the plug on his campaign. republican mike huckabee also suspended his campaign. he said the voters were just sick of him set single digit showings in iowa. sam and laura. >> tightens oplittle bit. still plenty of people left on the republican side of things. so, here's what's next, thank you, kris, in the race for the white house. new hampshire will hold its primary a week from today. and then it's nevada and south carolina's turn later in the month. ahead of super tuesday, which is on march 1st. 6:04. new this morning, a hominid construction in the oakland hills is no more after an overnight fire broke out just before 11:00 last night on hood street near the oakland zoo. by the time crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. took them about 80 minutes to get it it under control.
6:05 am
no one was inside the home because it was undergoing a remodel. the cause is under investigation. we are right now only five days away from the golden super bowl and football fans and even nonfootball fans are flooding the bay area, hoping to get innen the sein on the celebration. >> stephanie chuang live in super bowl city where it is raining. >> it is raining, laura and sam. maybe this will help to keep the crowds a little smaller in the beginning, but security has made it a little bit difficult. it is around the clock here and that dozen mean just lines for those needing to come here for the fan village. created a mess for some who work in this area. some decided i'll work from home today. the security situation did make it pretty difficult. made it it a rough start for sied's first day at work. his new office at mission and spear right here next to super bowl city and he didn't have his work i.d. yet and super bowl
6:06 am
security would not let him through and that is what is happening here. offices are requiring people to go through security every single time they enter the building, which is what is driving some of the long lines, especially in the morning and after lunch. >> they sent e-mails around and they forewarn people and have encouraged people to work from home if they don't have to be in the building. >> she was not the only one who told us employers issued warnings far in advance about the possible long lines and some encouraging their employees to work from home this week. san francisco police and security forces are here on every corner and we've seen it here this morning, as well. what remains to be seen, too, the road traffic. the rain might make it messier and the drivers have been warned, don't come and drive. take public transit. so, do that and the other tip is, if you're going to have to drive,o mike inouye he has the latest for the traffic on the roads. "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, steph. super bowl madness piling into the south bay.

a live look at the sap center this morning with the red carpet rolled out for the inaugural opening night event. the super bowl teams come face-to-face with the media and fans in primetime. what has traditionally been known as media day in the past, opening night still had that familiar flair of interesting characters asking the players inequally as interesting questions. including the newly crowned miss universe. >> i asked them if they had a victory dance or a team hand shake or a victory hand shake maybe. >> i mean, i love it. it's support. that's why you continue to do it. you want to put smiles on someone else's face and you want the same in return. >> super bowl l is a homecoming for panthers head coach, ron rivera, who grew up in monterey. the seaside high school product said playing the game in the bay area certainly has its perks. >> i grew up at a time when the raiders were the thing and then the 49ers became. so so many great coaching legends here from john madden

"today in the bay" bob redell joins us live. bob, folks that visit that park now to know if all the trees are inspected as they don't want to see another tragedy. >> sam, a tree inspector is expected some time out here this morning to examine the eucalyptus tree. they want to find out if it was weakened by recent wind or the drought or the water running by its roots on the southern bank of the nearby creek or possibly

something else altogether. if fell around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. killed a man. the coroner has yet to release his identity, but he is older than 60. more people based on what they saw could have been hurt or killed. >> there were words that we got that there was some kids that were kind of in the area and they were able to move out of the area to safety before the tree hit the ground. >> we have spoken to a couple of people who live around the park who think this tree's health might have played a role and they are worried about some other trees that don't look good and they are hoping that they get inspected, as well. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> obviously, a combination of a lot of drought and now recent storms. some of that rain activity still continuing this morning. kari hall joining us now with a look at your microclimate forecast. >> we had such gusty winds the past couple of days and the winds are calming down with this weak system moving in bringing us some rain and it's really coming down now in san francisco
6:10 am
and oakland as we get a closer look, we've been tracking this rain moving through parts of the peninsula, as well as the south bay. rainfall rates coming down at about 0.1 per hour. so, as we continue to see this rain pouring, it will be moving fairly quickly through the morning commute and then out of here by noon. this evening's commute looks clear and will have another round of rain moving in tomorrow. i'll detail that coming up in the microclimate forecast coming up in ten minutes. let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. >> kari, they're moving prettily well. the live shot 101 at 680. this road is not as wet as many. first the volume and then the map. the volume creates the slowing we see right here. that is about the extent of it. the blue as opposed to the green where things are damp. the blue you might find more watt water on the roadway. commute still pretty light right here. tri-valley starting for 680 and

880 and both of those routes getting into the city and we have the bay bridge metering lights on and slowing for the east shore freeway and especially 580 off 24. typical pattern here. look at the north bay a quick look at san rafael shows you we're building the volume and slick roads, again. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up remember that san francisco home demolished because it was sliding down a hill. now we know a possible cause. plus, the layoffs at yahoo! this morning and fbi barbie. we'll take a look coming up in "business and tech." before this short break, another live look right now at the sap center this morning. just last night, the great peyton manning opening up about his nfl future. >> stay in the moment. focus on the task at hand and take it it one week at time. ten other cliches you can use right there. it it truly has served me well in the unique season that has occurred this year, but with the injuries and it's just been different for me. so, not getting too far ahead and not looking too far back has

6:15 am
the announcement this afternoon. >> we know for sure yahoo! will announce their quarterly profits. that is on the calendar. companies often use this opportunity to make big annou e announcements like layoffs or restructuring. a cheaper, leaner yahoo! is something the company can put on the market for sale. much like you put a fresh coat of paint on the house before calling the realtor. now, this is not what marissa mayer had in mind. she came to yahoo! to make big changes, but her board and big investors kept scaling back her plans. for those who supported mayer, the one big regret is she never got. alphabet the company we used to call google reported its profits. they weren't as expensive. who knows maybe they'll pay off huge down the road, as well. google investors are so pleased it looked like google will overtake apple as the most
6:16 am
valuable company in the world. that is huge. now, some headlines will tell you google already done that, but google has a really super complicated stock structure. they have three classes. i'm saying they haven't yet, but they will in the next couple of hours. a fascinating new study out of harvard funded by the biggest think tank say the fbi and it's titled don't panic. the fbi director there on the right has been pressuring silicon valley for back doors into iphones and other devices. this report says, yeah, iphones are essentially impossible for the government to get into, but the same report says the government has so many other options like those tvs that can hear you when you speak. the government can tap those. how about this. hello, barbie. the harvard study says the government could use barbie dolls. hello barbies are connected to the internet and could be used as spy devices. the point here being, guys, while the government loses one option say getting into your

text messages they're going to have a lot of other options like internet connected barbies to spy on the bad guys. just got to get the bad guys to use barbies. >> have a sweep of everything in your entire house and hope that the government isn't spying on you, basically. >> already. >> already. >> that barbie looks a little -- those measurements, i think. well, it now looks like a broken water main is the smoking gun behind the recent demolition of a luxury california home. crews last week were ordered to demolish the $2 million home after a neighbor discovered a huge crack in the foundation. other neighbor were concerned recent rains were to blame and for a time were worried their homes might be in jeopardy, as well. now san francisco utilities taking the blame. they say an eight inch city water line was leaking and weakened the soil surrounding the home. the city will likely have to pick up that tab for the rebuild. can you imagine? >> nice chunk of change there. >> don't blame it it on el nino.
6:18 am
>> that's right. >> el cracko in the pipo. >> we just had, yeah, snl el nino. el nino gets blamed for everything. you want to set the record straight. >> not just one storm, but the larger scale of how it impacts our weather system and now we don't have much of an influence as we've some of the showers rolling through the bay area. it's been fairly active, but it looks like it will start calming down, especially as we head into the weekend. a live look at san jose. you can see the clouds and the seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. check that out. we have major changes on the way. now we are seeing some rain moving across the bay area. san francisco, oakland, parts of the east bay and the peninsula looking very wet this morning. some of the heavier rain where we see the dark shades of green now shifting over towards the bay and over towards the east bay, as well. and now our temperatures are chilly to start out. it's only 44 deit grees but
6:19 am
let's drop in on the east bay. pleasanton 43 degrees and in walnut creek it's 42. 43 now in the north bay. our highs today won't be that warm, only reaching into the mid-50s and some of ous will struggle to make it there as we see some low 50s in spots like petaluma and brentwood 55 degrees and livermore 54. the showers moving through mainly during the morning and then as we go into the afternoon, a lot of this clearing out as the showers move to the south and chilly temperatures all throughout the day and then as we think we're getting a little bit of a break, the next round of rain moves in. that happens tomorrow afternoon. between these two very weak systems passing by, we're looking at the potential of about 0.4 of rain in santa rosa and oakland 0.3 and san jose about 0.1 of rain. and we will also see some of that snow falling in the sierra. the first round moving through right now and then it continues into the afternoon. the second round moves through
6:20 am
tomorrow evening into early thursday. once that moves out, we are look at some snowfall accumulations. it doesn't look like a really heavy snow, but just enough to make those roads slippery with about four inches of snow expected at squaw valley. a look at the weekend forecast. as we dry it out, we also warm it up. our temperatures will be in the mid-60s on saturday. beautiful weekend to get outside. and, of course, we're looking for some perfect weather on super bowl sunday in the south bay. it it will up to 69 degrees. i don't know how it it gets any better than that. let's check in now with mike to see how the roads are moving. >> first of all, kari, it it gets better if the niners or the raiders were playing. looking over here towards the south bay. we can't have everything, i guess. looking over and getting towards super bowl city in san francisco, by the way. in comparison with the arena. levi stadium in santa clara and a smooth drive. berkeley curve and no surprises. wet roads will look at your maps and the green highlighted all
6:21 am
over your map and that's where you'll get slicker conditions. not so bad in novato and getting down towards the golden gate bridge and as we look at your speed sensors. the yellow and oroonnge and 50 miles per hour through pleasanton and same thing for 880 down hayward and a slight build across san mateo bridge. 92 westbound. lighter volume overall and northbound route through san jose haven't been a problem, but heavier rain hitting highway 85 and anywhere south of 280. keep that in mind for the on and off ramps and we'll look at palo alto an easy flow of traffic here. the sheen on the roadway and the water kicking up and the rain hit 101 through palo alto. get more of that water kicking up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up next, a historic california building destroyed by flames. california has now six confirmed cases of the dangerous

the california public of health is getting involved warning people to take precautions against mosquito bites. health officials advise people to remove standing water near their home and apply insect reant when necessary. all of this because officials say there have been six confirmed cases of the zika virus in this state all contracted while traveling outside of the country. meantime, the world health organization has declared an international emergency over the rapid spread of zika. the w.h.o. says there could be as many as 4 million cases across the globe of zika in the americas next year. the group held an emergency session to evaluate the outbreak after a number of ocases were linked to the birth defects that result in abnormally small heads in newborns. >> all agree on the urgent need to coordinate international efforts to investigate and understand this relationship better. >> the last time an emergency designation like this was used,

6:31 am
highway 85 getting hit with heavier rain and even though you see some snow over here on the east side of the hill in hamilton. don't head up there because not good for driving conditions and you don't want to get into trouble right there. a smooth drive and a slight build. especially gental for a tuesday. we're looking at so far a lighter commute. so, folks are holding off until later as we've seen during this closure for super bowl city or maybe telecommute from home. we'll see. san mateo bridge a live look out there and show you the volume of traffic is starting to build, though, westbound. we do see some slowing across that flat section and since we're here, see that tarp that was blowing around yesterday, it's very calm today. just resting there. the winds are calmer, as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:1. decision 2016 is being called a historically close iowa caucus. hillary clinton edged out a win over bernie sanders and ted cruz topped both donald trump and marco rubio. >> we have team coverage of all
6:32 am
the results this morning. let's get right to "today in the bay" kris sanchez. official husband to count all night long before declaring a democratic winner and this win by less than half a percentage point. >> i did fess up before going to bed because i didn't know how long that counting is going to last. just a few people delegates who showed up and made all the difference between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. let's look at how close it was this morning. now, you said it's less than one percentage point. 50/50 is how it comes up on the graphic. the number in parentheses are the number of caucus goers who chose five people who made the difference there in giving hillary clinton the win. it was a historically close race, though, that was anything to start because when this all started back in april, would you believe hillary clinton had a 40-point lead in iowa. >> as i stand here tonight
6:33 am
breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa! >> iowa, thank you. >> now the republicans, though, did get to go to bed earlier than the democrats because ted cruz was declared the winner with a much definitive margin. tracie potts is in washington with that part of the story and that was deitted issed a little bit earlier, likely not the way that donald trump expected. >> not at all the way donald trump expected kris. ted cruz pulled this one out because of all the people he had working on the ground and the fact that he was the kbt. new this morning we're looking at data from the nbc entrance poll that shows the concerns people had here in iowa were not the types of things that donald trump was talking about. jobs and terrorism that more people were interested in an opponent or a candidate who could affect change. someone who was electable
6:34 am
against the democrat. less interested in someone who would tell it like it is. now, we are moving forward to new hampshire with not one, not two, but three republicans in play. because take a look at the razor thin margin, as you were saying. on this side between donald trump and number three marco rubio. just about a percentage point there, which puts rubio in a good position now moving into new hampshire. back to you. >> that was definite one of the surprises. donald trump also a bit of a surprise seeing the second wasn't too shabby. thank you very much, tracy. we know we'll check in with you, again. the new hampshire primary is next tuesday. there will be two fewer candidates in the pool because democrat martin o'malley suspended his campaign. mike huckabee suspended his campaign. did better than the other that are on that huge republican slate and suspending because of illness and then clarified it is because he thought the voters were sick of him.
6:35 am
laura. >> all right, well, the new hampshire primary a week from today and then nevada and south carolina's turn later this month ahead of super tuesday on march 1st. california primary isn't until june by which point things are usually decided. but the contest like last night, that could be very different this year. also this morning, hominid construction in the oakland hills, no more after an overnight fire broke out just before 11:00 last night on hood street right near the oakland zoo. by the time crews arrived on scene the house engulfed in flames. took them about 80 minutes to get that fire under control. we spoke with a neighbor who described the moment he noticed the house was on fire. >> i came outside and wasn't nobody around so i went over there and looked at it to investigate to see what was going on and it was real high and somebody was banging on the window and everything like that. i called 91. >> no one was inside the house
