right now for the super bowl. they're thinking the bay area weather seems just awful. well, normally that's true. >> well we're all slivering like oh my gosh, this is so cold. well it will warm up as we go into the next couple of days. it's not supposed to be this chilly. we're in the upper 30s right now in the south bay and 41 degrees in the north bay. highs today only in the mid to upper 50s and we'll have some rain. and unfortunately it won't give us a good soaking, more of a nuisance light scattered rain into the evening commute. we'll talk more about that but let's see how the morning commute is going now with mike. we're going to take the shot of the peninsula. these are flashing lights, northbound 101 before you get to the university avenue off-ramp. north of the embarcadero off-ramp. you see the folks shifting over to one lane to the left. it's causing a big backup for a couple of minutes, still a crew

there, another vehicle yet to be removed. more traffic as we look at your map leads to a little slowing north past the scene. more traffic over here, north of 680. that's the typical pattern in palo alto. unusual slowing on the peninsula. 880 starts the buildup into hayward. they were scheduling a traffic break heading down there. i've got no update since then. a typical pattern but we'll track that. the bay bridge metering lights are on getting into san francisco. happening now, police in the tri-valley are searching for an elderly woman missing since yesterday afternoon. take a look at her photo. 76-year-old marlene haynes was last seen at her home at 3:00 p.m. as you head out to work you'll see silver alert signs. she's described as having blond hair, blue eye, 5'5" tall. haynes may be driving a beige

2010 toyota camry. she does suffer from medical conditions and may become disoriented. this morning, bacterial meningitis at a bay area university. right now student at santa clara university being warned about the dangerous and potentially deadly infection after two confirmed cases there. "today in the bay" kris sanchez is live at the university. health and school officials taking immediate action as it is contagious. >> reporter: right. they're trying to figure out which students had contact with the two concerned cases because it is very contagious. not as contagious as a told cold but because it causes swelling around the brain and spinal cord it's a serious concern. we expect to learn more of the two cases. at this point we know that one student checked into the hospital on sunday, the other checked in yesterday. the university is tracking down the folks who had contact with

them while planning two free vaccine clinics this week. the symptoms are similar to the flu, sudden fever, head ache, stiff neck and sometimes vomiting an confusion. but this can develop into septicemia which brings fatigue, rapid breathing and dpark purple or red rash. at this point there are only two confirmed cases but it's possible that people aren't showing symptoms yet because that can take three to five days or ten days at maximum. it's spread person to person mainly through contact with saliva, so coughing and kissing. this is a serious concern because if untreated people, about 50% of cases are deadly. and even treated about 5% to 10% of people will die within 24 to 48 hours. santa clara, kris sanchez "today in the bay." a deadly crash closed a closure on an east bay freeway,

880 in san leandro about 8:30 last night. officers say two cars collided, one of them flipping on to its roof. that person in that car died. all southbound lanes for closed for a couple of hours. the chp is unsure how the crash happened and they're asking for me witnesses to come forward. a driver involved in a violent crash near the cal campus is now behind bars accused of drunk driving. around 5:00 a woman was riding her bike on bancroft and fulton avenues when shen was hit by a car. the car dragging her several feet. he was eventually rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the driver was promptly arrested for dui. a broncos player, a practice squad player back in denver going to be watching the super bowl from his home after he was caught upping in a south bay prostitution sting. this happened at the motel 6 on knot 1st street in north san

jose. about 4 miles from the broncos team hotel. "today in the bay" bob redell is joining us live in san jose from the motel 6. this is all coming as law enforcement is cracking down on sex crimes ahead of the super bowl. >> reporter: correct. san jose have said that they would be stepping up sweeps of places that they say are known for prostitution, like the motel 6 that you just mentioned behind me. sources tell nbc bay area news that officers yesterday spotted rye murphy. a member of the broncos practice squad. they spotted him with his brother and a woman here at the motel. when the went went inside and then came back out, police detained the murphy brother. investigators clear ryan murphy of any wrongdoing. they let him go, citing his brother and the woman. broncos head coach released the following statement, although practice squad safety ryan murphy was not cited by the

police, we decide it was best to continue without him. ryan is returning to denver but his status as a practice squad player has not changed at that time. as a member of the practice squad, his job is to help the team prepare, which means he would not have been dressing for sunday's game. incidentally, murphy is a graduate of oakland tech. reporting live here in san jose, bob rye tell "today in the bay." happening today, the department of homeland security will be in zpran to discuss safety efforts for super bowl 50. secretary of homeland security jeh johnson will lead the session which includes officials from the nfl as well as bay area law enforcement. the dhs says there has been no kred kl threats to any of the events leading up to the game. there are roughly 30 law enforcement agencies taking part in planning and protection of super bowl week. cashing in for being a good citizen. his tip led to arrest of two escaped inmates. now this man could get a reward.

today. this afternoon into tonight. but we're starting out dry. it's cold, too, so bundle up before you head out. a beautiful shot of the bay bridge, no fog this morning with mostly clear skies. temperatures now are in the upper 30s for the south bay and the east bay. we have some low 40s elsewhere. it's not much better. looking at the seven-day forecast on the bottom of the screen, we'll have much warmer air moving in. he's take it hour by hour in oak la oakland. 8:0044 degrees. it's going to be cloudy and breezy. rain moving in in time for the evening commute. if you want to head to the sierra, look at these temperatures, upper 30s, light snow falling today. they did the snow surveys yesterday and found that the snow pack in the sierra is 130% of normal.

so looking good. squa squaw valley 155 inches at the summit. a lot of snow there. we talk about the light snow moving in today. after the rain moves through the bay area, the system moves to the east and brings them some snow. we've had chilly temperatures to start out this week. we should be at 61 degrees, we will not get there in san jose today. but in the next few days, much warmer temperatures. by sunday we'll be up to 707 degrees, just perfect for the super bowl. a lot of sunshine and nice warm air to go along with it. a look at palo alto where this clearly shows flashing lights are still there. this is blocking the slow lane. so folks are moving over, squeezing over into some of your other lanes of traffic and that's causing more slowing northbound. southbound we're losing the

doctors all over the world on alert. health officials in dallas has identified a case of zika that they say was sexually transmitted. mosquitos are the main transmitters. an emergency land in somalia. authorities say they found no evidence of any criminal act in connection with an explosion that blew a big hole on the side of this passenger jet. authorities originally said it was likely caused by a bomb. people on board say they heard a loud bang moments after the plane took off yesterday. the pilot turned back around and landed the plane safely. two of the 74 people on board were hurt. a full investigation is now under way. that will take your breath away. a scary scene. a young girl jumping to safety during a fast moving condo fire. >> this is the scene yesterday at the complex in northern new jersey. you can see the flames in this video. it shows -- doesn't show the moment the 9-year-old girl

going to be offered as early as this week? >> reporter: right. they're going to offer free vaccines to students on thursday and friday. right now the focus is trying to find out who else had contact with the two students who landed in the hospital on sunday and then get yesterday. we expect to hear more at a press conference at 10:30 this morning by the santa clara public health officer who will talk about the two confirmed cases of meningitis. the university again is trying to track down anyone who might have had contact with those two students. symptoms are similar to the flu. they are sudden fever, head ache, stiff neck, sometimes vomiting and confusion. but it can also develop into septicemia which brings fatigue, rapids breathing and a dark purple or red rash. there are only two cases here at santa clara university but it is possible that other people might have been infected and just aren't showing symptoms yet because that can take anytime

veteran. he suffered a slashed trachea and was stabbed multiple times. the chp expect him to survive. a short time later san francisco police arrested a 44-year-old man and officers say he had a large kitchen knife. some believe this latest incident raises the stakes in the ongoing debate about police use of force in san francisco. city's police commission is meeting tonight to discuss that very topic. a spokesman for the police officers association points out yesterday's attack highlights the danger when someone is armed with a knife. critics are less understanding. >> this goes to show you how quickly an attack can happen. >> we have to come to a common where ground where we have to understand what is enough and what is left. >> you'll recall san francisco police shot and killed mario woods in december when they say he refused to drop a knife. that prompted the police department to review its use of force policy.

more jail deputies could be arrested as claims are investigat investigated. sheriff lori smith said the investigations revealed quote significant results but the sheriff did not elaborate. these findings have been turned over to the prosecutor's office. the county jail has been under skrut sni since three correctional deputies were arrested and charged with murder. one broncos play won't be anywhere near the game if sunday. santa clara deputies yesterday descended on a motel 6 in san jose. our sources they broncos practice quad member ryan murphy was detained along with his brother and a woman. deputies cited his brother and the woman. murphy was not charged but it was still enough to send murphy back to denver. broncos coach issued a statement, although rye murphy

by 1:00, light showers and it continues into the afternoon into the evening. it won't reach the south bay until later on tonight after seeing the highs in saratoga reaching 55. 55 in napa, oakland 57, livermore today a high of 56 degrees. we'll be watching the waves because we'll have a high surf advisory in effect until friday as the winds continue to pick up ahead of the storm systems. we will have the waves at times reaching up to 15 feet. the weekend forecast, after all of this moves out, we're looking at some much better weather. highs reaching into the low 60s on sunday in the south bay we're up to 70 degrees. and of course all eyes on the game and the forecast for kickoff, how about that, 71 degrees, and a lot of sunshine by halftime we're at 68 degrees. so some beautiful weather after a chilly and wet start to the week here in the bay area. let's check in with mike to see

searching for an elderly woman -- missing since yesterday happening right now, police in the tri-valley searching for an elderly woman still who has been missing since yesterday afternoon. 76-year-old marlene haynes was last seen at her livermore home about 3:00 in the afternoon. as you head out to work you're going to see silver alert signs on the freeways. haynes may be driving a beige 2010 toyota camera. she suffers from medical conditions and may become disoriented. some other top stories we're following. >> right now let's go to "today in the bay" kris sanchez live this morning where the concerns are growing over the spread of bacterial meningitis. >> reporter: there are two students in the hospital with meningitis which affecting the lining around the brain and the

spiral cord. we expect to hear more about them and the risk to public health at 10:30 this morning as the county public health officer holding a press conference. we know that the university is planning two free vaccine clinic this week. meningitis spreads mainly via saliva, kissing, coughing but it is possible other people are infected and they just don't know it yet because the symptoms can take anywhere from three to ten day to present. the symptoms are similar to the flu, sudden fever, head aches and stiff neck, but it can develop into septicemia and that can bring fatigue, rapid breathing or a dark or purple red rash. you should seek out medical attention quickly because in half of cases untreated, meningitis can be deadly. i'm bob redell live in san jose where the denver broncos has sent home one of their

players after he was detained in a prostitution sting here at this motel sticks. sources tell nbc bay area that officers spotted that bronco, his name is ryan murphy, spotted him with his brother in a car outside the motel while a woman who they were with went inside. police questioned murphy and determined he was not break any laws though office efs did cite his woman and his brother. broncos head coach releasing the following statement, although he was not cited by police, we decided it was best for the team if we continued our preparations for super bowl 50 without him. ryan is returning to denver but his status as a practice quad player has not changed at that time. his job is to help the team prepare. he's a bay area native having graduated from oakland tech.
