"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm page hob kins. hillary clinton and bernie sanders battled in the campaign season's first one-on-one debate last night. clinton responding to sanders's recent campaign line. >> i was asked if i was a moderate or a progressive. do i like to get things done. k4erry picking a vote here or there doesn't change my record. >> the pair also duked it out over one of the major narratives of this campaign season, being the establishment candidate. >> our campaign is a campaign of the people by the people, and for the people. so, rachel, yes, secretary clinton does represent the establishment. i represent, i hope, ordinary americans -- and by the way, who are not all that enamored with

the establishment. >> well, look. i got to just jump in here, because, hon negligently, senator sanders is the only person who would characterize me, a woman running to be the first woman president as exemplifying the establishment and i've got to tell you that -- it is -- it is really quite -- it's really quite amusing to me. >> later they battled over national security. >> we differed on the war in iraq, which created barbaric organizations like isis. not only did i vote against that war, i helped lead the opposition. >> look, we did differ. a vote in 2002 is not a plan to defeat isis. we have to look at the threats that we face right now, and we have to be prepared to take them on and defeat them. >> it wasn't all back and forth though, and near the end of the

debate, the candidate shared a kum ba yah moment. >> if i'm so fortunate to be the nominee, the first person i will call to talk about how to get it do will be senator sanders. >> i respect the senator very much and i hope it's mutual and on our worst days we're 100 times better than any republican candidate for president. you like that? >> that's true. it's true. >> so, who won? going by social media, it was a toss-up. the share of the conversation on facebook, a dead tie, and while clinton edged out sanders on twitter, sanders gained more followers during the debate. noil, with only four days until the new hampshire primary, republicans have their own debate this saturday. seven of the nine remaining candidates will take part. carly fiorina and jim were gillmore missed the cut, and there is no undercard debate.

this, as a new poll shows marco rubio leapfrogging ted cruz into second place in new hampshire behind front-runner donald trump. rubio's fellow candidates are taking notice and increasing attacks. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> reporter: with momentum in new hampshire, marco rubio's hoping for a photo finish drawing crowds in every shot as republican rivals take theirs. >> thank you, guys for being here. >> reporter: the new attacks, sparked by this slip, endorsing rubio but seeming to struggle when asked why. >> can you name his top accomplishment in the senate. >> my feeling on marco is, someone who has tremendous potential, tremendous gifts. if you look at being a minority in the united states senate in the a year, four years where nothing got done, i guess it's hard to say they're accomplishments. >> reporter: rubio's establishment competitors pouncing like jeb bush. >> his whole life is about

ambition. he's gifted. he can turn a phrase really well. but what has he done? >> he wrote an amnesty bill for illegal immigrants. >> reporter: the former senator fighting for the v.a. and fighting trafficking. >> i'm proud of my service. we have real achievements. >> reporter: rubio trying to stay above the establishment pay and so is john kasich campaigning at this high school. >> are you the president? >> i am. >> did you run a negative campaign? >> wouldn't it be great if you could run like you did for class president where you just tell people what you're for, instead of spending your time trashing somebody else. >> reporter: but donald trump is slamming all politicians in typically trump fashion. >> i was going to say they're full of [ muted ] but i won't say that. >> nbc's hallie jackson reporting. hillary clinton is nlt the only one being dogged by the email scandal.
