night in shelters while rescuers still are not sure, sheinelle and craig, how many are missing. >> thank you, kelly. authorities in new york city will be back on the scene of the deadly crane collapse as they figure out what caused the structure to topple. the crane was secured during high winds when it started picking up speed. it slammed into a building and crashed to the ground scattering debris more blocks as you can see here. the 300 tons of twisted metal killed one and injured three others and crushed several cars. officials say it is a miracle it wasn't worse. some candidates could make their last stand in new hampshire. the stakes are high with the first in the nation's primary just 72 hours away. we have you covered on both

leading in new hampshire, it is marco rubio rising to second now. explaining why to nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> it is not enough to be angry. you have to tell people what you are going to do. i think the cumulative effect of doing that for months will help us. >> reporter: rubio at tonight's debate sits in the line of fire and the other establishment candidates look to make their mark. this state is a must win for some. even as rubio picks up an endorsement from bobby jindal and takes aim at ted cruz. >> if you get a call on tuesday night saying i dropped out. it is not true. keep voting. >> reporter: that is a dig at the senator's campaign. cruz looking ahead and confident. though slipping in new hampshire polls, but in the top tier nationally. >> the two big initiatives i'm running on, repealing every word of obamacare and adopting a simple flat tax so you fill out your tax on a post card and
5:38 am
abolish the irs. >> reporter: what can we expect to see at tonight's debate? look for immigration to be one of the major topics. it is important for marco rubio's potential vulnerabilities and what donald trump likes to talk about. we could see the republican field pounce on that. >> thank you, hallie. on the democratic side, bernie sanders holds a lead over hillary clinton in the granite state. the question is will hillary be able to come back for the primary? we have kristen welker with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. senator sanders has a 20-point lead over secretary clinton. she added events to her schedule today. she is bringing in an army of volunteers and telling supporters don't give up. with the democratic race growing more combative, hillary clinton and bernie sanders faced off at a party dinner. >> the only way we create the

change that we need is through a political revolution. >> i will spend all my tomorrows doing everything i can to make your tomorrows better. >> reporter: following a day filled with fireworks. >> i want to say a word to the extraordinary people, particularly young people, who are supporting senator sanders. i know you may not be for me now, but i am for you. >> reporter: meanwhile, bernie sanders rallied his faithful. painting clinton as the establish. me me ment. >> reporter: he has been hitting clinton for being entrenched with wall street and giving speeches to goldman sachs and clinton responding to andrea mitchell. >> are you sorry you did it? >> no, i'm not. i thought it was a good way to communicate what i was seeing in the world.

5:41 am
clinton have a busy day of campaigning ahead. sheinelle. >> kristen welker, thank you. >> alice jordan is here with us. and steve kornacki is here with us as well. good morning to you. >> steve, let's start with you and let's start with donald trump. a commanding lead in new hampshire. some polls show him flipping nationally. he skipped the debate in iowa, but expected to be on the stage tonight. let's talk about what he has to do. is new hampshire a must-win moment for trump? >> i think it pretty much is. the 13--point lead, the eight day stretch is the most volatile eight days in american politics. you remember hillary clinton and barack obama, she was trailing at this point in new hampshire by double digits. she came back and won on primary day. the cliche is a lot can happen in a short period of time in
5:42 am
politics. that is true this week. we have seen marco rubio starting to move up significantly in the polls here. donald trump is maybe sliding back a bit. he is not growing. if you are donald trump and lost iowa and turn around and follow it up with a loss in new hampshire, especially after leading, it is really hard to see how he can jump start his campaign in later stages. he needs to put wins on the board steadily or seen to be beating expectations steadily to stay viable in the later contests. he has to come out with a win tuesday or he is in trouble. >> alice, steve mentioned marco rubio. up six points in a recent poll. you have the outsider candidates or so-called outsider candidates. ted cruz and donald trump going after him tonight. you also have kasich and christie and governor bush as well. campaigns on life support. how big is the bull's-eye on marco rubio's back in the debate
5:43 am
tonight in new hampshire? >> he is the one they have to take down. he is cutting into the vote margin. especially for christie and kasich. it is make or break. he has a poor showing. he is probably out. kasich has about 2.5. doesn't look good for him. kasich has put all resources in new hampshire. he does have the best ground game of anyone. he could surprise a bit. >> and steve, let's talk about bernie sanders for a moment. enjoying a commanding lead in new hampshire. new hampshire has been kind to the clintons. with bill clinton in the past. his campaign. and hillary clinton in 2008. so is there any sense that support will perhaps turn out on tuesday and give clinton a bit of a surprise victory? >> i think there is an expectation this will tighten. you have polls showing between 20 or 30 points for sanders. most people think that will tighten. when you look at the clinton family history here, you think of hillary clinton obviously coming back and winning in 2008, but the other one was bill
5:44 am
clinton in 1992. we remember new hampshire as the state that made him the comeback kid. what we forget is he actually lost new hampshire that night by eight points to paul tsongas. that is how he called himself the comeback kid. that is something to keep in mind. i think the clinton campaign would like to get out of new hampshire, they would like to drive the deficit into single digits. they like to close with some momentum. they like to be able to tell the media, look, bernie sanders is from next door. he is from vermont. a huge advantage there. there is not a huge advantage to being from vermont here in new hampshire. that is another story. they will say that. they want the media to put an asterisk on it. they want to say we beat expectations. >> elise, quickly. after new hampshire, south carolina primary. hillary clinton doing very well in south carolina. do very well around the south as well.
5:45 am
after new hampshire, is there a path for bernie sanders? >> i think it just depends on how successful bernie is at expanding his message beyond non-white voters and if he can reach more diverse audiences. so far, he hasn't been successful. >> it is exciting to watch. elise and steve, thank you for talking with us this morning. several authorities are holding a michigan man who they say was plotting terrorist attacks in the name of isis. a federal complaint alleges the 22-year-old planned attacks on police and area church. he has been under investigation since may with agents following his gun purchases and social media accounts where he described acts of terrorism, including beheadings. he is in custody on weapons and drug charges. excitement is building in san francisco for tomorrow's big game. security is tight for the tens of thousands who descended on

5:47 am
>> what is a few thousand dollars in the sands of time? >> reporter: before the game, drama. the commissioner confirming the league is reviewing allegations against peyton manning and whether the superstar quarterback received hgh. human growth hormone. >> i don't see the investigation as any type of distraction for peyton manning. he is focused on the task at hand. >> reporter: with manning denying use, his attorney says his wife received medication for her use only. ahead of its biggest night, the nfl trying to manage i.c.e. hauled in $39 million worth of fake merchandise. bogus items sold as authentic. >> we have seized over 440,000 items. >> reporter: this weekend, the roads and rails across the bay area are expected to be jammed.

security here at levels never seen before. f-15s are in the air and no-fly zone 32 miles wide. >> we're here to watch the skies. you watch the super bowl. >> reporter: on sunday, that's exactly what 110 million people will do. and for most of us, the best seat in the house will be nowhere near the stadium. >> reporter: security will tighten over the next 24 hours. there are 60 agencies and the fbi is leading the charge. they say the super bowl will be among the safest places to be anywhere in the country on sunday. >> you bet. thank you. dylan dreyer in santa clara with a check of the forecast. you're wearing a coat. >> i'm wearing a coat and freezing. it's 45 degrees here. >> wow. >> i would have been more prepared for standing out in the snow. that's what i'm used to, so i didn't bring my hand warmers. we did have some snowfall across new england yesterday. we did actually see this as a little engine that could kind of storm as the snow just continued to dump on areas like rhode
5:49 am
island. this is in warwick, rhode island, also parts of connecticut saw steadier snow. we did have some higher elevations across connecticut and massachusetts pick up nearly a foot of snow. so, we haven't really seen this driving types of conditions all that much this winter. so, it was tough for the cars to get used to that again and getting used to shoveling off the snow. we are going to see a lot of the snow melt away. we have a ridge in the jet stream. that's going to start to build in and help temperatures warm well above average. we should get into the 40s and even some 50s, especially as we go into the next couple of days before the next storm system begins to work its way closer. good saturday morning, i'm meteorologist anthony slaughter. it's beginning to be a bright day. temperatures are cool here in town. back into the 40s. 44 right now in the south bay where the super bowl will be held tomorrow. 47 in san francisco. later on this afternoon, we're
