it's monday, february 8th. coming up on "early today," score one for the underdogs and the possible storybook ending to one of the nfl's greatest players of all time. and from the gridiron to the granite state a mad scramble for votes as the candidates fight for their political lives ahead of tomorrow's primary. incredible scene that caused quite a stir. good morning. peyton manning got the storybook ending to a career that many argue makes him the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. his underdog broncos did what few thought possible as denver's defense managed to shut down superman cam and the 17-1

panthers. nbc's jay gray has the super bowl 50 highlights. >> reporter: the broncos opened the game with a long drive and field goal, then scored again in the first quarter. >> they got it to him. the ball is out in the end zone. >> reporter: the panthers got on track to start the second, cutting the lead to just three. both teams gave the ball away before halftime. a long punt return, though, led to another denver field goal, giving the broncos a 13-7 lead at the half. a halftime that started with cold play and ended red-hot with bruno mars and beyonce joining the show. in the second half the teams traded field goals. then late in the fourth quarter with the panthers down by six, they turned the ball over again, their fourth in the game. the broncos then pushed the ball across the goal line, securing the franchise's third super bowl win and a second super bowl ring for quarterback peyton manning.

jay gray, nbc news, santa clara. following the game a dejected cam newton had this to say before walking out on the media. >> they just played better than us. i don't know what you want me to say. the broncos' linebacker von miller led the defense that frustrated the broncos for four quarters, and miller was richly rewarded by being named super bowl 50 mvp. so have we seen the last of future hall of famer peyton manning? >> i've got to kind of let this sink in. it's been an emotional week, an emotional night, and the night's just beginning. i look forward to celebrating with my friends and family, and i think i'll take some time after that. like i said, i'm going to enjoy the night, take it one step at a time. >> something tells me he will be

smiling for days. >> and as broncos fans celebrated deep into the night, back in denver police managed to keep the crowd largely under control with just a handful of arrests. the broncos' victory parade will take place tuesday at denver's union station. now to politics. and one day before the voters of new hampshire hit the polls, and it seems it's still anyone's race. the latest monmouth university poll has donald trump on top. only 49% of gop primary voters say they're completely decided on a candidate. following saturday's republican debate, it appears marco rubio has the biggest bull's-eye among all candidates. nbc's gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: with his political future on the line, marco rubio doubled down saying so what if he sticks to a script. >> it's interesting that right now after last night's debate, all you said the same thing three or four times. i'm going to say it again. >> i'm going to pay them to keep running that clip because that's what i believe passionately. >> reporter: but rubio seemed rattled, repeating the same rehearsed line four times. >> let's dispel once and for all

waterboarding, and i'd bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding. >> what's the worst? >> i'm not going to define it to you on this program, but i would be very much in favor of going beyond waterboarding. >> nbc's gabe gutierrez reporting. the ground game in new hampshire intensified for the democrats as well with bernie sanders holding a commanding lead in new hampshire. hillary clinton made a side trip sunday. we get more on the democrats from nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: secretary clinton taking a detour to a baptist church in largely african-american flint, michigan, impacted by a toxic water crisis. >> this is not merely unacceptable or wrong, though, it is both. what happened in flint is immoral. >> reporter: clinton's visit designed to resonate with her base in key states like south carolina, critical if she loses new hampshire. but the clintons aren't giving up on the granite state.

volunteers are going door to door. her surrogate in chief, former president bill clinton reminiscing about the state where he famously dubbed himself the comeback kid, helping to catapult him to the presidency. >> this is 1992 on steroids. you need to respond on steroids and you'll never regret it. >> reporter: hillary clinton trails bernie sanders in the state, and clinton on the attack, trying to paint sanders as weak on foreign policy. >> there really isn't any kind of foreign policy network that is supporting and advising senator sanders. >> reporter: sanders firing back on the trail in new hampshire. >> with the war in iraq, i was right on that issue. hillary clinton was wrong. >> reporter: hailing from neighboring vermont, sanders is leading clinton by double digits in the latest polls, but clinton has proven experience here, waging her own comeback in 2008, beating barack obama.

>> that was nbc's kristen welker. senator sanders made a quick detour to new york city to appear on "saturday night live" along side larry david. but just hours after the show, sanders was back in new hampshire. nbc's kate snow caught up with him on the trail. >> madeleine albright, former secretary of state, was doing an event for hillary clinton, and she said there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women. she's talking about your voters. >> well, look. i think that's an unfortunate statement. i think women should help women, women should help men, men should help women, men should help men. that's what life is about. what we're now talking about is electing the president of the united states, and people should make their decision based on who they think can do the job best. >> you've been taking some heat for foreign policy. what do you say to critics who think you don't have knowledge? >> this is what i say. i say, a, it's nonsense, and i say, b, it's the same argument used against barack obama in 2008. who is this senator? this young senator? he doesn't have any experience in foreign policy.

meeting over the weekend after north korea launched a long-range rocket. pyongyang claims it was just a satellite, but the launch comes one month after the country conducted an underground nuclear test. in a closed door meeting, all 15 security council members pledged to expeditiously adopt a new resolution with significant new sanctions against pyongyang. >> with each one of these actions the dprk moves one step closer to its declared goal of developing nuclear tips and intercontinental ballistic missiles, and we cannot and will not allow this to happen. >> south korea says it's moving forward on talks with the u.s. for deploying an advanced missile defense system to counter the growing threat of north korea's weapons capability. it's been nearly three days since a powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern taiwan, and people are still trapped beneath the rubble. this morning two survivors were pulled out alive from a high-rise apartment building that collapsed like an accordion. so far more than 170 people have been rescued from the building's remains.

the associated press is reported the death toll at 37. and now for a look at the weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. activity on the east coast. >> a blizzard like storm. iowa and minnesota has a blizzard and everything is quiet in the west but unusually warm. here is the storm in the east. this was almost another huge snow storm. as far as snow totals some areas from boston about one to two feet at most. most areas less than that. look at how enormous this storm is. it is about as big and beautiful looking of a storm as you will ever see. it is not affecting and hurting that many people. as we shift to the west coast it is just the opposite here. this is usually the case when you have extreme weather on one coast it is opposite on the

other coast. you can notice clouds up to the north allowing warmth to build through the west. it is a heat dome in the summer time. here we are in the middle of winter. portland in the low 60s the next couple of days. unfortunately, we are melting snow pack. we were above average and hopefully will stay that way. way up to seattle today and no signs of cooling down in the beginning of this week. people in the northwest this week warmer than florida. >> warmer than florida. please figure out a way to get us to los angeles this weekend. so jealous.

westgate super book in las vegas says new england, seattle, and pittsburgh are already favored to win next year's super bowl but if seattle does return, they'll likely be without marshawn lynch. during the super bowl, lynch tweeted this photo. and the nfl.com confirmed the 29-year-old running back has, indeed, hung up his cleats and intends to retire. later teammates richard sherman and bruce irvin offered statements of thanks and congratulations to lynch. so i guess we're all, of course, waiting on peyton's announcement, but as "usa today" notes, peyton manning did have the worst season of any super bowl-winning quarterback. the win over the panthers included two touchdowns set up by defense, and manning had the fourth worst passing rating of any bowl-winning quarterback at 56.6. give the american icon a break. back to you. just ahead, cold play, beyonce, and bruno mars. get in formation, wowing the crowds at the super bowl. plus, elton john and james corden killing it. entertainment is up next. i think we should've taken a left at the river.
