at tapes of cam newton and the panthers, what did you see in those tapes that made you think you could contain him and them? >> the thing is, i just look at the speed of our defense, and having guys that can rush the passer like me and von and malik and wolf. setup guys. we've been against so many running quarterbacks. with aaron rodgers, andrew luck. those guys sort of got us ready for this point right now. we already had our rush package and things we needed to do to contain a guy like cam newton. so we were comfortable. but we knew also who we were going against. he's a great quarterback. >> cam newton doesn't suffer from lack of confidence, but it seems like there was this key play early on with the sack, the fumble, the touchdown. do you feel like that was a key moment in the game to kind of set the course? >> i think it was a key moment in the game.

engaging in online harassment. >> andrea, thank you very much. >> let's bring in our experts. nicolle wallace served as an adviser to the mccain-palin campaign, and chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." >> good morning. >> chuck, big moment, big stakes. chris christie absolutely eviscerated marco rubio. this campaign with seven, eight candidates, it's like a game of three-dimensional chess. where does it fall out? >> i think the consequence of what happened saturday night is, i think no matter what happens here, barring one of the candidates sort of skyrocketing or an upset over trump, i think it means now nobody gets out. i think it means new hampshire doesn't win out the field. marco rubio had an opportunity to take control of the race on saturday night. he knew everybody was going to come after him. that's what makes saturday night so perplexing.

he knew they were coming after him and he wasn't ready. he ended up blowing an opportunity that i think could have meant securing the nomination, believe it or not. if he had had as good of a night as he had as bad of a night. >> let's go further on that. we were talking before the show. chris christie spent the whole week saying exactly what he was going to say to attack marco rubio on that stage on saturday night. like you said, here comes the punch. i'm going to hit you right in the nose. marco rubio didn't prepare for it and had no answer for it. >> here's a dirty little secret. marco rubio is polarizing in the republican party. from the outside, he looks like a pleasant, rising star in our ranks. inside the party and the field of candidates, he is viewed as thin skinned on policy matters, and chris christie saw an opening. he telegraphed and, man, did he take it. >> he absolutely did. i guess that's the question, chuck. again on the fallout, where it

all comes, does it lift christie? does this have the effect of helping christie? what about donald trump? no one goes after donald trump. he's the one who looks to be about to win new hampshire, if you believe the polls. >> by a lot. >> i don't know if it helps christie at all. i don't know if christie looked good in the moment. he looked tough in the moment, he made rubio look terrible in the moment, but nobody i talked to believes christie has been helped here. the candidate that may have been helped the most by this, john kasich. he has been sort of the guy that doesn't attack anybody. in new hampshire, that could get rewarded. he's the guy that every other campaign quietly thinks could end up being in second place or surging in the last minute. >> funny how things end up. i'll ask you about the democrats here. you have bill clinton out there, really standing up for his wife, hillary clinton, saying the tactics being used by the bernie sanders campaign are off the charts wrong. what's the reaction to this? >> you have bill clinton there looking really exasperated.

then you have hillary clinton's most prominent female surrogates unload on young women who are drawn to bernie sanders. i have thought all along hillary clinton was in a strong enough position nationally to glide through the ups and downs of the early states. she struggled in iowa eight years ago. bernie sanders is from the neighboring state. the fact she can't be more placid when he's challenged is, to me, the greatest threat to her eventual ability to be the nominee. these are hurdles like marco rubio she should have seen coming. i think it's more concerning for her supporters to see bill clinton and gloria steinem and madeleine albright become unhinged at the real threat she faces from sanders than the actual chinks in her armor. >> playing the sexism card, because that's what it is. is that a winner? >> they want to rally women. it hasn't happened. everything has been generational, not gender. the clinton campaign knows it'll be a long february before they get to south carolina. >> chuck, i'm coming your way.

ship's crew told them about the storm and said they'd try to beat it. conditions were far worse than anyone expected. >> these waves are 25 feet tall. >> reporter: high anxiety on the high seas sunday as a royal caribbean cruise ship hit rough waters off the coast of the carolinas. >> 75 mile an hour winds. >> reporter: officials say the "anthem of the seas" making its way south from new york to the bahamas, ran into severe weather, forcing the crew to change course. royal caribbean releasing a statement this morning saying in part, in an adoesn't baans of caution, the captain asked all guests to stay in their state room until the weather improved. there has been no damage to the ship due to the weather. passengers using social media to show their experiences riding out the storm shot video and photos of toppled furniture and other minor damage. the coast guard released a statement overnight, saying nervous relatives began calling about their loved ones on board,

i'm ... ==topvo== the chp is investigatg a shooting st night on a very good morning to you. 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the chp is investigating a shooting that left one man hospitalized. it happened in sunol a little after 9:00 p.m. investigators say it happened after a man pulled over to help a woman with a flat tire. that's when someone drove by and fired at least two rounds. the man suffered injuries in the arms and chest. not considering life threatening. they don't believe it's linked to other shootings in the same i-80 corridor. investigators are hoping that someone who saw something comes forward. let's take a look at that monday morning commute. how is it going, mike? >> laura, we have a lot more traffic than last week. look at northbound 101 recovering after a crash. it took a while to clear.

first, we'll start the early part of the week. it's a mess from the great lakes to the southeast. windy in the rockies on into the southwest. then midweek, we're looking at snow around the great lakes and northern new england. sunshine through the gulf and out west, as well. latter part of the week, a clipper may bring more snow to the mid-atlantic states. temperature wise, we're expecting below average temperatures from the great lakes to the gulf coast of florida. above average out west. midweek period, the cold air stays in the east, but out west, that heat expands. the latter part of the week, we stay chilly, below average from the great lakes on into the southeast and mid-atlantic states. gulf coast and on into the our temperatures are warming up with some sunshine as we take a live look now at tiburon. we'll continue to see the sun throughout the day. it's now 54 degrees in san francisco. 56 in oakland and in san jose it's 49 degrees.

it's cool in some spots but look at these highs today warming up to 77 in gilroy, half moon bay, 82 degrees. 72 degrees in the mission while napa is at 78 and dublin a high of 79. >> that is your latest weather. let's head back inside to mr. matt. >> al, thank you very much. as a director, writer and actor, justin theroux does it all in hollywood. he's showing off the talents in "zoolander 2," which he not only appears in but also co-wrote. i want you to take a look. >> hello. i'm the headmaster. derek zoolander. i'm assuming, because i've never met you ever. i'm informed that you'd like to see your son. easily arranged. come. i should tell you your son is incredibly gifted.

>> hey there, sport. i hear someone is a fat smarty pants. >> leave you to it then. >> justin, good to have you here. >> thanks for having me. >> first time here. it's a cool thing. >> yeah. >> normally i say, what was your reaction when the writers told you about the character you're going to play. but you wrote the character. >> i wrote my own character, which is one of the joys. >> what did you like about him? >> he's really an extended cameo this time. it's fun to wear the dumb makeup and put on the terrible scar. >> you and ben co-wrote this movie. do you do it? are you the elton john-bernie mold, where you are in separate places, write jokes and bring it together? >> it's a good gig. i wrote with him in hawaii for a month and change. it wasn't that awful.

although, you can argue, it's cruel to be in hawaii and sitting at a computer. we get together and goof around, make each other laugh, then go back to our corners. both write. pass the script back and forth, kind of like that. >> given the success of the first "zoolander," were there any rules? here are things we will do or things we definitely won't do? >> no rules. we really wanted to -- we didn't feel the pressure of trying to compete with the first one. at least we tried not to feel the pressure. once we locked into the ideas that we -- or sort of the plots and the themes of the movie. once we got a couple good anchor scenes, thought we had something funny, it became a joy to write. really fun. >> one of the things you notice when you watch the movie, you have a lot of famous people to do cameos in the film. >> many. >> did anyone say no? did you go to anybody and they said, no, thanks. >> virtually, no one. as soon as we started writing, we started getting incoming calls. mentioned it to someone and

they'd say, we'd love to participate. it was about scheduling. we had so many people who are busy people. if we can get them to rome, which is not a hard sell, we could use them. >> i was honored to have a tiny cameo. i was watching the movie with my kids. i didn't even get a reaction. nothing. they didn't turn around, just kept watching. i was like, did you not just see that? nothing at all. since this is your first time here, let me go over a couple of things. like this is your life. is it true you are a tattoo artist? >> i wouldn't say artist. i would say, i've done tattoos on a good friend of mine and a few other people. >> when was the last time you did a tattoo on somebody? >> i think i did one about two months ago. >> really? >> yeah. >> recently? >> i have a good friend who is a tattoo artist who does my tattoos and, periodically, he lets me ruin parts of his body. >> if you were going to do a tattoo on me, what would you do? >> i'm thinking dolphin s or a

rocker on the back. >> we don't go to the back. maybe the arm. you're a painter? >> occasionally i paint and draw, yes. >> bartender in new york? >> long-time bartender. >> where? >> vaughn downtown. >> is it still there? >> gorgeous bar, oh, yeah. >> did you love the gig? >> yeah, i loved it. it's really fun. it's a step up from waiter. you get to talk and chat. >> also, it forces you to make an instant connection with people, which for an actor, would be a good talent to have. >> you get to be ground level and see the best and worst of people. >> the last thing i have here is that you are fluent in mandarin. >> no. not fluent. >> can you speak it? >> passable mandarin. i will not be translating at the u.n. any time soon. >> something simple then. i'm justin theroux. i co-wrote "zoolander 2" with ben stiller. it's a take off from the first

everybody ready to spread the love. >> we're calling it show heart today. we're searching for acts of kindness to share. jenna bush hager is here to kick it off. >> we crisscrossed the country to find people spreading kindness. in kennett, missouri, i teamed up with sheryl crow. we went out to spread heart in the heartland. >> reporter: vesheryl crow is a nine-time grammy winner. she's a legend in the music business and in her hometown of kennett, missouri. today, at her old high school, it's like any other day. except it isn't any other day. >> they're going to be incredibly surprised. they have no idea what's going on. >> reporter: sheryl crow, kennett high school class of 1980, is back to announce a special gift. her parents still live in town and drop her off for school. >> is this nostalgic, having

your parents drop you off at your old high school? >> it is but i lived across the street. i walked there every day. >> reporter: we sneak in the back through the coach's door while students and teachers pile into the gym for what they think is a pep rally. >> make some noise! >> reporter: then it's time for another show of spirit. >> the "today" show is here right now. [ applause ] >> you thought i was the surprise, right? didn't you? no, actually, we have one more surprise for you that i think you're going to like. a lot. we brought a hometown girl back here to celebrate you. mrs. sheryl crow! to have her come back and do this for the teachers is just extra special. >> this is small in the grand scheme. i hope it goes a long way. >> reporter: i sat down with the rock star who started on a different stage. >> one thing people don't know is you were a teacher. >> when i got out of school, i went into teaching and i loved it. i had this burning desire to get my music heard. >> reporter: crow says her teachers inspired her to do just that. >> i know these towns are all the way across america, that send kids out believing they can do whatever they want in this giant world. i was that kid. >> so we have a year jobook fro your time at kennett. >> oh, good. >> you were a senior maid? >> yes, i was a senior maid. that means always a bridesmaid and never the actual bride. >> sort of like the lady in waiting. >> exactly. the permed hair and all that. >> '80s. >> that's what yearbooks are good for, is the long line of

hairdos. >> reporter: memories of a place that crow says still has her heart. returning brings the chance to thank those who have meant so much. >> so sheryl comes from a long line of teachers. her mother was a teacher, sisters were teachers, and she says, we both have dreams that we're late for class. every night, oh, no, i forgot to grade the papers. >> still having those dreams. >> it's important we support our teachers. it's something sheryl is doing with adopt a classroom. >> you said $600 really represents something admirable. >> the average amount that every teacher spends on materials for the classroom. >> teachers buy a lot of what they need out of pocket. >> anyway, we have to support them. >> jenna, thank you. up next, dr. oz is here to tell us about staying safe and healthy on your next flight, from where to sit to where the germs are

♪ all i need we're back at 8:48. there are millions of germs flying around on the planes. how do you stay healthy when you fly? it's one of the things dr. mehmet oz is tackling on his show this week. good morning. >> good morning. >> i don't like to think about the germs but -- >> let's talk about not just germs, lots of things to pay attention to when you travel. when you book your seats, not all seats are created equally. if you're worried about water landings, get above the wings. worried about crashing nose first into the mountain top, make sure you're in the back of the plane. more importantly, the pilots and co-pilots don't get the same meals. >> interesting. in case one has food poisoning. >> even though the plane is pressurized, every alcoholic beverage has twice the effect.

>> we have to keep the air circulating. what do you mean? >> a lot of people think the person next to them can get them sick. >> the person diagonally can, too. also, the person on the other side of the plane. keep the air moving on your chest. you want it to protect you if it can. other things to worry about are the headrests. we did a survey. this is the dirtiest part of the plane. >> oh, gosh. >> have a napkin or cloth behind your head. the things you take for granted, the table top in front of you, the air vent above you, they're really dirty. >> never get clean snd. >> never get cleaned. use the foot to flush, as well. >> other modes of transportation? >> when folks look at the turnstile, they think their gloves will keep them immune.

the gloves trap microbes, as well. wash your gloves once a month. most people never wash it, ever. >> it's true. >> if you take your cell phones around, clean it. it's dirtier than the bathroom. almost every study done, this is the dirtiest place. >> i don't think people do it often. >> it's simple. just wipe it down. keep your hands out of your pockets. the germs in yo s on your finge >> 20 seconds for the hotels. >> stay away from the glass in the bathroom. wipe off the remote control. put nit a ziploc. remove the bedspread and toss it away. quickly, get up and walk if you travel on board. stretch out the legs. drink a lot of water. get the hand wipes. >> always flush with the foot. dr. oz, thank you so much. more on his show starting today. check your local listings. up next, stirring up romance.

we're back. it's 8:52. valentine's this weekend, "today" food is feeling the love. we're serving up dishes to get you in the mood. brandi milloy is here. she has a decadent dessert this morning. good morning. >> good morning.

>> is this going to spark romance? >> this food is definitely going to get you in the mood. it's irresistible, seductive. we need the eggs, cream, dark chocolate, butter, piecrust, lavender. >> so this is a tart? >> yes. first thing we're going to do is infuse our cream the night before with lavender. lavender relaxes you and it certainly can, you know, get you in the mood. do that the night before so that it adds lavender to the ganache. over here, i have my piecrust. you can make it from scratch if you'd like. i love just using store-bought piecrust, especially for something like this, when the star is the caramel, toasted marshmallow. >> good, don't have to feel bad about that. >> it's easier. we're going to prick it with the fork. bake it for 12 to 14 inches, until golden brown. you can be a little festive.

>> that's cute. >> i love it. >> how are my tasters downstairs? are you in the mood? >> you know, this is really good. could you not have been sweet, brandi? >> this is a trifecta of desserts. i was thinking about you. this is the easiest caramel sauce to make. add the sugar, wait until it turns this beautiful amber color. then add the butter. add the salt because, honestly, it's the best part. it'll bubble up, quickly stir it. keep stirring it until it's nice and smooth. you're going to end up with this. >> looks beautiful. >> oh, my gosh. i could just drink this. >> i could bathe in it. >> let's head back here, savannah. i've already put the salted caramel into the tart pan. if you could add our heavy cream into the chocolate. >> into the chocolate. >> that's the lavender-infused cream. it adds a little something.

>> already warm. >> i just popped it in the microwave two minutes. let it sit there and it'll melt the chocolate. you'll end up with this. if you want, i'm going to have you do the chocolate. >> i thought this was going to be very complicated but it doesn't seem like it. >> there's a couple steps that make it worth it. make it nice and smooth. we have that buttery, flaky piecrust. the salted caramel. >> talk to me, baby. >> this is 50 shades of amazing. >> okay. >> then it gets sexier. we add this meringue topping. everyone knows i love toasted marshmallows. i love s'mores. this is egg whites, cream of tarter and a little bit of sugar. if you have a tort, i was told i can't play with fire on camera, but if you have a tort, you can use the torch and -- >> get the brown? >> nice, toasted part. or put it in the oven.

around. it was like they brought the best of music together. i especially loved the part when they were all together on stage. they did a tribute to performers past. that was beautiful. it was to the song "fix you." it made you think of, over the 50 years of the super bowl halftime shows, how incredible those moments have been. seeing whitney houston there, it brought tears to my eyes. very moving. michael jackson, they showed his performance right here. that was unbelievable. >> bruce springsteen first came out, i was confused. oh, he's there, too. retrospective. >> i had the same brought. they're bringing them all back. fantastic. then i saw michael jackson and thought, maybe not. >> they're good but maybe not that good. >> i thought beyonce's costume was a tribute to michael jackson. i loved all of it. >> the black panthers, mall -- malcolm x, as well. >> beyonce next to bruno mars, her legs are longer than him.

from band-aid brand. interstate0 good monday morning. at 9:26, i'm sam brock. the chp right now investigating a shooting on interstate 80 last night that left one man hospitalized. it happened in pinole a little after 9 clock. someone drove by and fired two rounds when a man was helping a woman change a tire. the man suffered injuries to the warm and chest not considered life-threatening. investigators do not believe the shooting is connected to other recent shootings in the i-80 corridor. chp hopes someone who may have seen something comes forward. also happening today -- when you host a super bowl, things don't really end when the confetti drops. in fact, somebody has to clean everything up. that's what's going on today in two separate cities.

our chopper this morning flew over levi stadium where, as you can see, there are remnants of super bowl 50's post game celebration all over the field. someone's going to need a super sized vacuum cleaner to get all that confetti off the ground. in san francisco, crews are just getting started taking down the super bowl venue. it is expected to take several days. all road closures by the ferry building remain in effect through the rest of the week. kari is building up her forecast with warmer temperatures. we'll have your weather at traffic after this break.

in san francisco, a frinice comfortable 72 degrees. north bay looking at a high of 78 degrees. with these temperatures very warm to start out the week, we will likely see those temperatures cooling off as we go through the week. let's see what's happening on the roads with mike. toward the south bay it continues to be a sticking point for traffic. still have two left lanes block northbound 280 at magdalena  avenue. that jams up the commute. the rest of the south bay moves very well including the approach towards the bay bridge. this is the one east bay sti sticking point. we're listening to reports, 1:00 p.m. when they will rehurricane open lanes but this is an unexpected issue on 680. happening now -- there's been a freeway shooting on an east bay interstate leaving one man hospitalized. we'll tell you what investigators are saying about the altercation that led to that
