breaking over night a deadly hit and run crash in the south bay. we're live at the scene with the latest on the search for the driver. and sadness and sorry in vallejo. the police community remembers the beloved richmond officer as we learn more details about what led up to his death. plus, 24 surfers enter, only one will leave victorious. it is the return of the maverick surf competition. "today in the bay" starts right now. riding that wave right into friday and your weekend. good morning, thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> a festive friday around here. let's check the forecast, in fact, with kari. good morning. >> we have mostly clear skies, but also some patchy, dense fog in some spots like san francisco, as well as the north bay. you'll have to watch out for

that as you drive this morning, but now it's 52 degrees in san francisco and 50 degrees in the peninsula. highs today in the upper 60s to lower 70s feeling very comfortable as our stretch of nice weather continues. i'll detail what to expect as we head into the weekend that's coming up in a few minutes. let's head over to san francisco with mike. >> we're taking a dim view of the bay bridge, it it is a dimmer view than we often see because we can't see the city itself. clouds hovering around the area and moisture in the air and we'll watch as this changes over the morning. we'll watch as the speed sensors change, as well. southbound 280 just off the 101 split is a fender bender and a car in the center divide. that will be a distraction. no other issues for bay area freeways. >> thank you very much. that's right. breaking news happening here in the south bay where police are on the look out for a hit and

run driver who killed a bicyclist early this morning. it happened in san jose about midnight. >> kris sanchez joining us live from the scene with what police are revealing about the suspect. >> we know the suspect fled the scene after hitting the bicyclist but a description of the vehicle involved. it is a red, two-seater honda civic del sol. that car made for only about six years, so there aren't that many out there. if you see a red one, this is the kind of vehicle that san jose police are looking for that was involved in this deadly hit and run. we only know at this point that the victim was a man. police are not saying much more than that because it it is now a homicide investigation potentially. but we do know that the coroner is here and will identify the remains of that person later on today. the roadway is still closed because of the police action. we are talking about the northbound direction of winchester avenue.

not too far from the border with campbell. so, if your commute takes you through this area, you might want to reroute. police are working to clear the scene as quickly as possible so that folks can get to their business, as usual. but, again, the most noteworthy part of the description of that vehicle is that it it is a honda del sol. again, only made for six years and not many of them on the market. it is likely going to have damage to the hood and perhaps the windshield because it it is a very low profile vehicle. so, if a vehicle like that hits a bicycle, you're going to have some sort of impact and a show of that impact on that car. we'll get you more details and also talked with sergeant gary of the san ojose police department and we'll bring that to you at 5:00. >> thank you very much. shock and grief continue to fill a vallejo community after an off-duty police officer was shot and killed. it it happened at his home in the glen cove neighborhood.

vegas was a 15-year veteran of the richmond police force. the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute with his daughter's boyfriend. vegas heard commotion in his daughter's bedroom when he rushed in he was shot several times and died instantly. many neighbors say he will be missed. >> he is as genuine a good human being as you're ever going to find. >> the suspect, vega, is now behind bars at the solano county jail. he graduated from the police academy in 2011. same academy the victim, officer vegas, attended in 1990. >> so very tragic. for the second night in a row now human remains are discovered in the south bay. now, investigators digging for answers in both san jose and gilroy this morning. in this latest case, a human skeleton was found in san jose. now, chp officers say it's actually been there a while.

officers say a passerby spotted the bones about a month ago in the area near san jose city college. investigators say it was found behind a fence amidst heavy brush. though the remains were found weeks ago, officers say the person who discovered it did not call police until yesterday. he told investigators he decided to report it once he saw news reports of the human remains found in gilroy on wednesday night. right now the investigation is still in its early stages and the officer can't tell if it belonged to a man or a woman. in the meantime, investigators are trying to learn more about the human remains recently found in the outskirts of gilroy that we just mentioned. deputies say that the remains were not sierra lamar. the 15-year-old morgan hill teenager that was kidnapped and killed back in 2012. the prosecutor in that case as well as the homicide team scouring that scene yesterday.

beachgoers beware that is the warning as a high surf advisory is in effect. later this afternoon, the it key west coast guard, san francisco fire department and the golden gate national park service will hold a news conference to inform people of the heavy surf and dangers along northern california beaches. start at 1:00 at ocean beach. some people are saying beware, others are going there on purpose and they're probably saying, cow bunga. surfing fans from around the world. >> the biggest names in big waves surfing and gathering in just a few hours for one of the world's best known events the titans of mavericks. the contest start at 7:30 this morning right near half moon bay. in the past waves have been known to reach 30, 40 feet. one-day invitation only event. sorry if you didn't get yours in the mail, sam. you can be sure surfers will really lay it it on the line. the youngest participate this year grew up a short drive away in pacifica.

>> to be the youngest and oldest guy in the event is a privilege. >> one side bar is the lack of women taking part. >> i've been busy. >> maybe i should be saying this to you. organizers this week assured us that women will start to be included down the road. >> i know dog paddling. >> i would love to see you on a surf board. >> a lot of people watching this from the comfort of their own home. if you're out by the coast, it is going to be rough. >> you have to bundle up this morning. temperatures in the lower 50s and at noon 63 degrees and 67 degrees into this afternoon. a touch cooler than yesterday. in the upper 60s to lower 70s. still very comfortable with the mix of sun and clouds. we'll talk about this weekend coming up, let's get an update on the morning commute from mike. >> we have this, the fog you have been talking about. you can see it here at the golden gate bridge making it tougher to see the golden gate bridge. meanwhile, we'll look at the san

breaking news we're following this friday morning. a massive fire. take a look at that. it has shut down a stretch of a

major highway in new jersey this morning. it happened at a warehouse in hillsborough just thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. witnesses say they actually heard explosions, they felt the ground shaking. no injuries reported so far. >> pretty amazing. that's five alarm blaze there. we'll continue to follow that story. in the meantime a follow up. a new report rules out many possible causes in that deadly greyhound bus crash last month in the south bay. ntsb investigators issued a preliminary report into the january 19th crash in south san jose. two women died and another 13 passengers were injured. investigators so far have found no signs of mechanical issues or driver intoxication. at the time, the chp did say the driver admitted to being fati e fatigued before that crash. 4:41. coming up, another debate. democratic contenders for president.

well, the week just flew by, didn't it? >> what week. >> the longest week ever. ever. >> the super bowl, you know, made it a longer week. >> yeah. >> but we made it. we made it. it's friday and you have a forecast that's also going to put a smile on our face. >> i think so. it's going to be nice the next couple of days. as we've enjoyed some warm weather all throughout the week, we're taking a live look at the bay bridge and kind of spooky looking with the fog rolling across. you can only see half of it,

but, yeah, visibility will be low in spots. so, that's a big heads up as you head out the door. allow some extra time to get there. our temperatures are cool, once again, to start out. it's 43 degrees in napa and san carlos now at 48 degrees and san francisco is at 52 degrees. as we go into the day, let's take it hour by hour in san jose. low 50s and some clouds to start. once that fog begins to lift, we will still have a lot of clouds and the sun starts to peek out right at about 11:00. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day and high temperatures reaching into the low 70s. if this warm weather draws you to the beach, keep in mind there is a high surf advisory and that means we will have some sneaker waves moving up, just one wave that washes up. that's a lot higher than the other ones and also some rip currents. we will have swells near the coast up to 13 feet and a mile off shore, they're looking at about 30 to 40-foot waves.

and as you get out there today, if you're sneezing, you may be allergic to cypress. we have a moderate to high amount of that pollen in the air. into the next new days, it will still stay dry and then our next chance of widespread rain moves into the forecast. heading into wednesday and it may get a little more active after that with some more showers in the forecast for the end of february. as we go into the weekend, we're looking at highs that will still be well above average, even reaching 78 degrees in the north bay on valentine's day. let's get an update on the morning commute now from mike. >> you only showed part of the bay bridge over on the san francisco side. here's another part on the oakland side. incline going to low clouds and that's where the tower should be and where treasure island tunnel is. you just can't see it right now. the clouds are the issue. we'll look at the map and we don't have a problem as far as the speeds go across the bridge it itself. speed sensors on the map. green across the bay bridge and richmond san rfial and all over

markets closed and following the report that opec may be ready to cut production and oil was ralally today but still near $27 a barrel. japan fell sharply overnight and playing catch up to the rest of the world after being closed for a holiday on thursday. european markets are in the green today and the dow which had been down as much as 400 points ended off 255 points to 15660. the nasdaq losing 17 to 1767. uber agrees to pay $28 million to settle lawsuits over its safety practices and fees it charges passengers. uber charges people a safe ride fee, but they say uber doesn't use fingerprint id which is required by faxy operators. meanwhile, at&t plans to start testing 5g wireless technology this year. offer speeds and 5g isn't expected to power smartphones until the end of the decade and

partly cloudy skies and east winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour. up to 69 degrees as you head into valentine's day, which is on sunday. let's see what's happening on the roadways with mike. >> we love this. hearts for the san mateo bridge. 92 westbound with these headlights and no problem for visibility here and you'll find that on some of your bridges. take you to another view. this is oakland. where it travels between the san mateo bridge and you're looking across the bay. clouds have come across the bridge itself and you may encounter a little slowing for visibility. the north bay you can see the san rafael camera and fog drifting through in many patches this morning, as well. with the olympics in pruzil this s some athletes are concerned about the zika virus. they're already preparing to take safety precautions as they train. but, still, most olympic hopefuls say they're not backing out of the competition, despite their concerns. >> i'm thinking about a concern and hopefully we'll be able to

>> good morning. heads up about some fog that has been developing around san francisco and parts of the north bay, as well as the delta. now, temperatures at 49 degrees in the south bay. it's 44 degrees in the north bay and 50 degrees in san francisco. we'll see highs reaching into the upper 60s to lower 70s. still very comfortable with a mix of sun and clouds. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. let's get an update on the roadway conditions with mike. >> a mix of fog and bridge in this shot. a couple seconds ago, but it will drift through, again. tr we'll look at your map and no slowing as a result and you'll want to slow a tad bit and also i was looking for the bay bridge because a stall was reported in mid-span and the detail just came in as the treasure island on ramp to that westbound 80 direction. getting there from treasure island. the rest of your bay looks good as far as the speed sensors go. south bay no problems on the freeway but breaking news down there. >> we do. now to breaking news
