>> good morning. heads up about some fog that has been developing around san francisco and parts of the north bay, as well as the delta. now, temperatures at 49 degrees in the south bay. it's 44 degrees in the north bay and 50 degrees in san francisco. we'll see highs reaching into the upper 60s to lower 70s. still very comfortable with a mix of sun and clouds. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. let's get an update on the roadway conditions with mike. >> a mix of fog and bridge in this shot. a couple seconds ago, but it will drift through, again. tr we'll look at your map and no slowing as a result and you'll want to slow a tad bit and also i was looking for the bay bridge because a stall was reported in mid-span and the detail just came in as the treasure island on ramp to that westbound 80 direction. getting there from treasure island. the rest of your bay looks good as far as the speed sensors go. south bay no problems on the freeway but breaking news down there. >> we do. now to breaking news following overnight.

a man dead and the search on for a hit and run driver in the south bay. >> police say a driver hit the man on his bicycle about midnight happening near the intersection of south winchester boulevard and loma verd e drive. kris, police have a deitscription deiscription of the suspect's car. >> they're also looking for a car that might be pretty easy to spot. take a look. we are talking about a honda civic del sol. not too many of them on the roadways these days. only production for six years back in the 1990s. because of the low profile the car likely has damage from hitting that bicyclist. >> indicates it's possibly a red honda del sol vehicle. >> the del sol part is pretty

telling. >> that helps investigators because those cars were only made for a few years. very distinct look. >> the roadway is about to open in a few minutes, but this scene was closed as police were investigating. now, in regard to the victim, police say they can only reveal that it is a man. the santa clara county coroner just took that man's remains and will work to identify him and notify his family, as well. another look at that suspect's car. it looks similar to this one. a picture we found online. it it is, again, a red honda civic del sol from the '90s. two-seater vehicle and likely has damage from the deadly crash. this is baia busy stretch. police are hoping other people may have seen something and will come forward. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 5:02 for a second night in a row human remains are discovered in the south bay. now, investigators are digging

for answers in both san jose and gilroy this morning. in this latest case, a human skeleton was found in san jose and chp officers say it has been there for a while. officers say a passerby spotted the bones about a month ago in the area near san jose city college. investigators say it was found behind a fence in heavy brush. though the remains were found weeks ago, officers say the person who discovered it didn't call police until yesterday. he told investigators he decided to report it it once he saw news reports of human remains found in gilroy wednesday night. right now the investigation still in the early stages and officers say if they can't tell if the skeleton belonged to a man or woman just yet. investigators also trying to learn more about the human remains recently found on the outskirts of gilroy. deputies say the remains were not sierra lamar the morgan hill 15-year-old teenager who police say was kidnapped and killed

back in 2012. the prosecutor in that case along with a homicide team were scouring the area yesterday. a story that we watched develop yesterday morning shock and grief filling the vallejo community. what led to the tragic death of an off-duty police officer. >> bob redell live at the richmond police department where that officer worked. bob, this deadly shooting affecting now two bay area communities. >> correct, laura and sam. you can see behind me the richmond police department has lowered their flags at half staff to honor their fellow officer, officer gus vegas who was on the force for 15 years. as we were reporting yesterday was shot and killed yesterday morning inside his home in the glen cove neighborhood of vallejo. police have arrested robert vega who was the boy of vegas' daughter. around 4:30 in the morning officer vegas, who was off duty and at home at the time heard a commotion in his daughter's upstairs bedroom.

when he opened the door, the suspect shot him several times, instantly killing officer vegas. officer vegas was unarmed and his service revolver secured in another part of the house. >> how this, from what i understand went down, i just know that he was trying to protect his daughter, but also probably trying to help the person that was going to harm him. >> his wife jumped out of the second floor window to go get help. vallejo police arrested a 30-year-old suspect at his home in fairfield. his 6-year-old son who was with him was not hurt. the suspect robert vega is a 2011 graduate of the napa valley college academy, the same academy that officer vegas attended back in 1990. reporting live here outside the richmond police department, bob redell, "today in the bay." new autopsy report reveals just how many gunshots struck the man killed in a controversial san francisco police shooting back in december. police shot and killed mario

woods in the bay view district. now the medical examiner finds officers fired a total of 27 shots. all but six of them struck woods. the report also finds that woods had methamphetamines in his system along with anti-depressants. attorney john burris is representing woods' family. >> recognizing some influence of drugs on him. he did not respond the way the officer thought he should. that's a tactical question. >> in a statement, police admit parts of the report are hard to read. the statement also says "newly released information in the autopsy report appears to corroborate facts gathered by investigators in the aftermath of this tragic incident." it's 5:06 right now. let's switch gears a little bit and check the forecast. one thing you love about the bay area, the famous fog. the fog. >> yes, we'll have more of that

fog this morning that you love so much. that may be slowing down some people as you head out to drive this morning. we see the dark shades of gray up around antioch and concord and also around fairfield, as well as napa. over towards santa rosa. watching out for that along the coastline, as well. so, as we go into the next several hours we will see that and then clear up right around mid-morning and highs warming up into the low to mid-70s today. some upper 60s in san francisco, as well as oakland and pleasanton, as well. we'll talk about this weekend and some warmer air ahead. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's get a check now from mike about the commute. >> good morning, kari. we had a break last week. great weather for folks visiting for the super bowl. i wish we had the fog so they could get a feel of that. not showing any problem in this shot northbound heading up to the area right around that stretch by the camera. reports of a crash.

mavericks. one of the biggesrf happening right now. surf's up for mavericks. one of the biggest surfing competitions in the world is about to get under way in a matter of hours near half moon bay. >> just amazing to watch. team coverage for you as surfers and the crowds are trickling into the bay area this morning. meteorologist kari hall tracking the big waves. >> she's not one of the surfers, but stephanie chuang close to them. steph is live and all the action going on and, steph, you have a piece of the boards. what is that behind you? >> yeah. we've got a room full of boards,

sam. but even better than that what i have for you is travis payne, a local surfer from pacifica. travis, i understand this is your first time at mavericks. can you describe what this morning is like for you the morning before the competition. >> stressful making sure everything is ready. all the preparation started a couple days ago and everything ready and just more excited than anything. hopefully it is a good show. >> lastly, i mean, can you describe, i know it's pretty indescribable but the feeling before you head out there. >> right down the street and to have all this in your backyard is pretty nice. and yeah, i mean, hopefully it's big and there's it's a good enough show that it's a worthy contest. >> perfect. thank you so much, travis. good luck to you. again his first year. organizers are warning people.

the best way to view this is streaming live online and not to come out here because the waves are actually about a mile off shore and you can't see it, even from the beach nor the bluffs, which will be blocked off anyhow. breakfast is going to be served very shortly and that's why we'll see surfers coming in. 24 of them from pacifica and santa cruz and also as far away as brazil. they are getting what was described yesterday as taking on a four-store building and trying not to fall off. live in half moon bay, stephanie chuang. >> they make it look so easy. >> their balance is unbelievable and very mellow before the event. >> very impressive, too. okay, so, the most important part of that competition, the waves. meteorologist kari hall tracking the high surf this morning. >> we do have a high surf advisory in effect not only today, but tomorrow, as well. once they saw those wave conditions with some storms off

shore kind of turning up those waves, they went ahead and issued that competition. now, as we go into the day, we will have some waves near shore at about 13 feet, but, of course, they are about a mile off shore. they'll have much higher waves and we will have long period swells of about 19 seconds. temperatures for those nearby restaurants and hotels that will be hosting that event will be cool as you start out the day laying out on the lawn. it it will be 52 degrees and 63 degrees by noon. this afternoon, up to 67 degrees. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend, coming up. >> thank you so much, kari. stay with nbc bay area for all of your mavericks coverage. we have a link on our website. the details how you can watch all the action later today. again, it's only in a couple of hours. go to nbcbayarea.com. a couple years ago uber started tacking on an extra dollar fee. they said it was for safety. >> that's what the company says. a safety fee and people thought

it was odd they had to pay a dollar for that. >> they made fun of it it and then some riders said is that dollar making us safer and they took uber to court. uber fought that case but decided to settle. the company did nothing wrong. it it will stop calling it a safety fee, now a booking fee. and the company will pay out a little bit more than $28 million to members of the class. now, how you get your share is not entirely clear this morning, but we'll keep you updated. to paris where two uber executive its are on trial and actually face jailtime for their role in creating uber pop in france. similar to our uber x. the ride sharing violated laws and then arrested the executives. the executives say they just helped make it happen. the idea came from america. let's get a check of your news before the bell. landon dowdy is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, landon.

>> hey, there, scott. happy friday morning. wall street looks to end the week on a positive it note. futures are higher and stocks sold out throughout the day on friday. once the energy markets closed and following reports that opec might be ready to cut production. oil is rallying today but still near the $27 a barrel level. japan fell sharply overnight and playing catch up after being closed for a holon thursday. european markets are in the green today and the dow, which had been down as much as 400 points ended off 255 to 15660. the nasdaq losing 17 to 4267. scott, back over to you. >> have a great weekend. silicon valley leaders will gather in san jose for state of the valley. this is a conference at the mchenry center. like a high-tech a who's who of making things happen. >> everybody comes up out of their trenches. the rest of the year we're in our hole and fighting our fights and building our organization.

but we come together and look at the big picture and we think about the region and how is the region fairing and what are challenges and what are opportunities and how do we mobilize to address them? that's what is going on. >> sam and laura, it does look like there are some funding problems coming in at least the last fourth quarter and not getting the money from venture capital. all in all, we're doing really well. unemployment is way down. a phenomenal time to be in the bay area, but, still, this sort of like, is this going to last? >> that's right. everybody is always watching. >> at least we're getting altitude on the situation. look how we describe the enthusi enthusiasium. >> thank you, scott. a youth movement among the nation's wine drinkers is giving winemakers yet another reason to toast. >> a recent industry survey finds millennials drank more than 40% of the wine consumed last year. the youngest of that generation turned 21 while older millennials are now pushing 40.

conditions as you head oout the door, but, once again, it's cool grab a light jacket and then later on today we'll be taking that off. now, it's 50 degrees in san francisco and the peninsula. it's 45 degrees in the east bay. you can take a look at that seven-day forecast when it it comes up at the bottom of the screen to see how our temperatures are heading as we move into next week as some rain moves in. 44 degrees in napa and cal stoega starts out the morning at 47 degrees. we will have a cool start as we kn go hour by hour in livermore. 57 degrees by 10:00. up to 68 degrees by early afternoon. and a lot more clouds mixing today. and there may even be some light sprinkles in parts of the north bay later on this evening. the rest of the bay area stays dry with a light wind. the wind coming in from the north at about ten miles an hour. but look at half moon bay. it does a little bit more breezy there and a sustained wind at about 20 miles per hour. into the weekend, we will have some more showers moving in.

not until wednesday, so, some dry weather up until then as our temperatures continue to heat up. a look at the weekend forecast. we will have upper 60s today in san francisco. tomorrow, 67 degrees. slightly cooler and then 70 degrees on sunday. up to 78 degrees in the north bay. let's get an update on the commute now for mike. >> summer in the north bay. over here some drama in the tri-valley. we just got word a couple minutes ago, a crash and the speed sensors are changing west 580 at dublin. been there for five to seven minutes and crash reportedly blocking one lane and moving the camera around and didn't see anything yet. give you a check up in the next report. that's the slower drive heading towards the dublin interchange towards west 580. the rest of your bay shows a nice, easy drive. live look over there towards your camera and we see that fog just clearing enough to see the east shore freeway and westbound towards that berkeley curve. no backup at the bay bridge toll

an update now to breaking news that we first brought to you at 4:30 this morning. a massive fire shut down the stretch of a major highway in new jersey this morning. just look at the flames. this is a warehouse in hillsborough, new jersey. actually a complex of warehouses. about eight there in total. they can see those flames for miles. crews are still working on putting out the blaze that started since yesterday about 4:00 in the afternoon. you see the thick plumes of black smoke and fiery orange billowing in the air. witnesses say they heard explosions and they felt the ground shaking. amazingly, no injuries reported so far. new this morning, the world health organization says the vaccine for the zika virus may be ready for testing within the next year and a half. announced the government's plan to invest more than $1 million in research. other health experts say it could take up for five years for the vaccine to hit the market.

the countdown is on for one of the biggest surfing titians in the world, the titans of mavericks. we're now more than about two hours away. a little bit more until surf is officially up. live team coverage coming up. good morning on this friday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the weather will hold true. let's check in with kari. >> cool start, once again. patchy, dense fog developing this morning. something we haven't had most other mornings this week. it's now 44 degrees in the north bay while it's 50 in san francisco, the east bay and peninsula. look for highs today in the upper 60s in san francisco and the east bay while the rest of the bay area is into the low 70s and a lot more sunshine as we head into the weekend. so, i'll talk more about that. a look ahead to valentine's day, as well. let's see what's happening on the roadways now with mike.

>> a lot more brake lights. westbound 580. this is hacienda and moving over towards the dublin interchange. flashing lights just clearing the shot there. reports of the crash that happened earlier. we'll show you the map and little clearer view of what's going on. the backup continues to build as that crash remains in the roadway at the dublin interchange. got backing up through the area, folks. ing city streets through san ramon and pleasanton, as well. meanwhile, the rest of the bay looks great. 101 shows a little build and we expect this right around 5:30, guys. back to you. 5:31. now to breaking news in the south bay we're following. police on the look out right now for a hit and run driver who killed a bicyclist early this morning. >> happened on south winchester boulevard in san jose around midnight right near west park plaza. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us live from the scene with the car that police are looking for. kind of a car that sticks out,

kris. >> this is a pretty noteworthy description of this vehicle. police believe that the suspect may have been in a red honda civic del sol. this is a car that was only in production for about six years back in the '0s. not too many of them on the roadway. police say also because of the low proofile of that two-seater sports car, the car likely has damage from hitting that person. >> at this time, preliminary investigation indicates it's possibly a red honda del sol type vehicle. >> the del sol part is kind of telling. >> fortunately, that helps the investigators since those cars were only made for a few years and very distinct look. >> police say that the driver was going northbound on winchester north of lum va verd. at this point they can only say the is a man. the santa clara county will work to identify him and notify his family.

let's give you another look at what that suspect vehicle might look like. a red honda civic del sol from the '90s and likely has front end damage. this is a pretty busy thoroughfare through the day. traffic is flowing here and it won't impact the morning commute. because a lot of apartment complexes around here, it is possible that somebody may have seen something that could be helpful to police in this deedly crash investigation. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." new this morning, killed in a car crash. vallejo police say a 55-year-old man drove into some fencing and some cars at an auto repair shop shortly before 8:00 last night. happens near perkins avenue not too far away from interstate 80. the driver was found unconscious behind the wheel. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. the cause of that crash still under investigation, but officers say it it it may have been health related. laura?

sam, a community is left in shock as details are unraveling over the shooting death of an off-duty police officer that loss now being felt in two bay area cities. bob redell live at the richmond police department this morning where that officer were. new information is being revealed about what led up to his death. >> laura, investigators believe that richmond police officer gus vegas was shot and killed during a domestic dispute with his daughter's boyfriend. sources tell nbc bay area that around 4:30 yesterday morning officer vegas was off duty inside his home inside the glen cove neighborhood of vallejo. heard a commotion inside his daughter's upstairs bedroom when he opened the door, his daughter's boyfriend, robert veg, allegedly shot vegas several times killing him instantly. >> he is as genuine a good human being as you're ever going to find. >> officer vegas' wife jumped

out of the second floor of their home the window to go get help. vallejo police arrested the 30-year-old suspect at his home in fairfield. his 6-year-old who was with him was not hurt. the suspect robert vega is the 2011 graduate of napa valley college academy. that is the same academy that officer vegas attended in 1990. he was with the richmond police department for the past 15 years. reporting live here outside the richmond police department, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:35. a scare for some folks in richmond after a gas leak cleared them out of their homes. that leak was reported shortly before 6 last night. mainly impacted houses on 25th street between mcdonald and bizzal avenues. this is in the civic center neighborhood not far from the richmond b.a.r.t. station ask interstate 580. took about an hour for pg&e crews to shut off the gas.

a car port collapsed. a follow up now. a new rules out many possible causes in the deadly greyhound bus crash in the south bay. ntsb investigators issued a preliminary report into the january 19th crash in south san jose. two women were killed and another 13 passengers hurt. investigators so have found no signs of mechanical issues or driver intoxication. at the time, the chp did say the driver admitted to being fatigued before the crash. after much back and forth, the raiders are here to stay, at least for now. a live look right now at 0.co coliseum this morning. they're making long-term promises. the team just signed a short-term lease to play for the 2016 season. mark tavs called this deal a win/win situation. he's optimistic that a more long-term deal could eventually be worked out. >> for the raiders it gives us some certainty for this season, as well as flexibility for the following two seasons.

and the certainty is really important for us right now because free agency is up. and players are going to want to know where they're going to be playing and where going to be living and everything else. so, i'll say, again. i think it's a win/win situation. >> so far no deal on the table about building a new stadium in oakla oakland, which is really what this comes down to. as forts, he's not raising ticket prices as a gesture. good news if you're planning to cruise around the city this weekend. the roads from super bowl city are officially open, again. the san francisco transportation agency says it comes a day ahead of schedule. >> cruising all over the place, not just on the roads, but on the ocean. talking about mavericks and those waves. >> as you head out the door, we've seen patchy dense fog along the coast and also parts for the inner bay. as we go into the rest of the morning, this will gradually clear up, but you can see where the fog is by the dark shades of gray around antioch and napa, as well as santa rosa and also in

san francisco. so, that may slow you down. also running back to get your jacket, it is cool to start out the day. highs today reaching upper 60s to lower 0s. a touch cooler than the way we started the week. i'll detail the weekend coming up in a few minutes. let's get an update on the roads from mike. >> west 580. very slow right now. and what's going on here, just some more flashing lights. i'll show you the flashing lights head over. heading over towards the crash before you geet the dublin interchange. i wanted to stay clear because i wanted show you all the folks getting off the freeway. look how bad it it is. the crash still reported in your two middle lanes as you head over towards 580 and the dublin interchange itself. we are seeing the speed smooth out. chp has not given us an update. very busy and perhaps they man nl e managed to move that. as you move to the rest of the bay, that's the big drama. south bay no problem.

christenson, professional surfer from hawaii who has agreed to chat with us. good morning. i wanted to ask you, what is your plan when it comes to breakfast because i know you have this competition just in a couple of hours. >> well, they have a bunch of different options up here. i went for the granola and the yogurt. have a lighter breakfast. mark here is going for the eggs and bacon. yeah, so, i think whatever you usually eat in the morning. i usually go for a light breakfast and snack. >> perfect. i know you're from hawaii. you flew in. you got in at 8:00 last night. were you able to get good rest? these are huge waves, i know. >> beats taking the red eye. in the past we've done the red eye and i'll never do that, again. because you don't get much sleep. arriving at 8:00 p.m. there is plenty of time to get a good rest. >> what is going through your head? is your preparation mentally as you get ready this morning?

competition, what they need. >> good morning, the high surfer advisory in effect as we've seen some waves building up off shore because of a couple of storm systems well off to the west. that high surf advisory continues until 8:00 tomorrow evening. and so far we've had some light winds. but the swells will begin to build as we go into this afternoon. now, near the shore, the waves will be at about 13 feet. but, of course, they're a mile off shore. they will have some much higher waves. if you will be going to some of the restaurants, hotels and bars nearby, it it will be cool to start, and of course, you won't be able to see anything and all the bluffs and the cliffs will be closed. you can't get even close to that. this afternoon in the upper 60s. a very nice day for that competition. we'll look at the weekend forecast coming up. >> thanks so much, kari. of course, stay with nbc bay area for all of your mavericks competition coverage. we have a link on our website that details how you can watch all the action live later today. just head to nbcbayarea.com. for details.

right? >> diamonds are forever. no, fish, frozen fish. >> we're looking at some warm weather this weekend. mid-february and here we are talking about highs in up thor 70s and low 80s this weekend. we will have changes on farther down the line. let's look outside this morning. half moon bay nice and quiet and nice, calm shot and some fog in some spots, but not right here. and as the seven-day forecast comes up, you'll be able to see how our temperatures are warming up and cooling down over the next several days. just so you can make some plans there. 55 degrees in the peninsula and north bay is 53 degrees. closer look at the south bay. and santa theresa 48 degrees and san martin is now at 45 degrees. taking it hour by hour in oakland, we will have some clouds to start after that fog starts to lift. our temperatures still warming up, though, into the low 60s by 11:00 and lunchtime it is 64

degrees. overall a very comfortable day. we've had some dry weather here recently all week long. it won't be until wednesday when our next weather system moves in and looks like it could bring in a significant amount of rain and some snow for the sierra. so, hopefully we'll start to see a change in this pattern after computer model is hinting we could have a wet end to february after a very dry start. and, once again, we've been talking about how warm it it gets this weekend valentine's day in the north bay. we're up to 78 degrees. and in the south bay, 75 degrees. so, get ready for some toasty weather across the bay area. let's see how it looks on the roadways now with mike. >> kari, the chp has not had time to give us an update because very busy with this dublin crash. what i see on the sensors and the live shot here, we have recovery for west 580. let's look at your sensors. crash in lanes that dublin interand had things stacked up. you just saw the live shot and the sensors coming up towards

dunguness crabs can now be fished recreationally welcome back, everyone. crab season is back open. now fished recreationally in the

bay area. the key word recreationally. commercial dungeness crab fishing is still not allowed. traces of toxic acid caused by algae are low or undetectable. for commercial restaurants that sell to wholesalers or restaurants the ban is still in place. >> fishing industry in order to go in crab. but at the same time, commercial fishermen are paying their boat slips. it's a huge hit to the commercial fleet, basically. >> the toxic acid caused this season to close for three months. not surprisingly, the commercial crab fishing industry has seen a major economic hit. it has taken months, but finally crews in southern california have managed to cap a gas leak that forced thousands of people from nar homes. for 16 weeks now, methane gas has been spewing from a blow out in a socal gas company well
