are looking for the driver of a car that might be pretty easy to spot. plus, another grim discovery in the south bay. investigators now examining a new set of human remains found right next to a south bay college. and i'm stephanie chuang live in half moon bay where the maverick surf competition isn't for another hour and a half, but the surfers, they're well fed. the boards are here ready to go and some of them are already on their way to the dock. we have a live update coming up. "today in the bay" starts now. and a very good friday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. three words that will immediately brighten your day. it is friday. let's get your friday forecast from meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning. we'll have some awesome weather heading into the weekend. that makes it even easier to get out of bed this morning and get the day started. it is cool, though, as you head out. we're in the 40s and low 50s and highs today reaching up to 68
6:01 am
degrees in san francisco and the east bay. we have low 70s where across the bay area with a mix of sun and clouds. we'll check out the weekend forecast and that's coming up in a few minutes and let's get aunidate on what is happening on those roadways with mike. >> just a bit of fog right here. where we would show you the lights heading up the incline but right now the part blanket would the light clouds. we'll look at the map. that was in "star wars 5" way back in the day. over here a backup and the metering lights are on. typical of a friday and a lighter commute all around. in towards san rafael and maybe some patches of fog as kari talked ain the north bay. not a major concern for drivers right now. back here in dublin. we've seen 580 improve over the last few minutes and earlier crash tied things up at the interchange. starting to slow down a bit north 101 right around mckie. a crash reported around oakland road and sound like everything is off to the shoulder, but i'll keep checking on that. >> mike, thank you. we'll check back with you.
6:02 am
in the meantime, an update to breaking news. a bicyclist is dead and police are searching for the driver who hit him and then fled from the scene. this happened on a very busy stretch of winchester boulevard between pain and hamilton avenues. kris sanchez has been at the scene since we first came on air at 4:30. police have a detailed description of the car they're looking for. >> right. police believe that that driver was in a little red sports car like this one here. not too many of them on the roadway because they were only in production for about six years. back in the 1990s. because of the low profile of that little sports car, the car likely has damage from hitting that bicyclist. >> at this time, preliminary investigation indicates it's possibly a red honda del sol-type vehicle. >> the del sol part is kind of telling. >> yeah. fortunately, that helps the investigators since those cars were only made for a few years. very distinct look.
6:03 am
>> now, police say the driver was going northbound on winchester avenue north of loma verde and south of pain avenue. when that driver hit the victim and there are bicycle lanes through this area and not clear if the bicyclist was using them at that point. police can only say the victim is a man and the santa clara county coroner will work to identify that man and notify his family. let's give you one more look at that suspect vehicle. again, police believe it is a red honda civic del sol from the 1990s. a two-seater sports car that is pretty low to the ground and likely has front end damage from this deadly crash. this is a pretty busy th thoroughfare through this area. but because a lot of apartments in this area police are hoping other witnesses might come forward and help find this driver. >> kris, thank you. >> checking back in with kris at 6:30 and tweeting updates from the scene. you can follow her at kris@nbc.
6:04 am
6:03. for a second night in a row, human remains have been discovered in the south bay, this time investigators are digging for answers in san jose after human skeleton was found in the area near san jose city college. it is known to be a homeless encampment. chp officers say someone spotted the bones about a month ago, but police say they just got the call yesterday. it's not clear if the skeleton belonged to a man or woman. investigators also trying to learn more about the human remains recently found on the outskirts of gilroy. deputies say the remains were not sierra lamar, the morgan hill 15-year-old teenager who was kidnapped and killed back in 2012. the prosecutor in that case as well as the homicide team were scouring that scene yesterday. a new autopsy report reveals just how many gunshots struck the man killed in a san francisco police shooting back in december. police shot and killed mario woods in the bay view district. officers say that stabbing suspect refused to drop a knife.
6:05 am
now the medical examiner officers fired 27 shots. all but six of them struck woods. the report also finds that woods had methamphetamine in his system along with antidepressants. >> he was under the influence and some influence of drugs on him. he did not respond the way the officer thought he should. that's a tactical question. >> in a statement, police admit part of the report is hard to read. their statement says, "newly released information in that autopsy report appears to corroborate facts gathered by investigators in the aftermath of this tragic incident." decision 2016. one week from tomorrow voters in south carolina and nevada weigh in on the race for president. last night both democratic candidates got a chance to leave an impression tackling a wide range of issues including health care. >> what i believe is the united states, in fact, should join the
6:06 am
rest of the industrialized world and guarantee health care to all people. >> the numbers don't add up. and many people will actually be worse off. >> the six remaining gop candidates, meantime, will go head-to-head one more time before nevada and is south carolina. the debate is scheduled for tomorrow. we have live team coverage of the race for president. it's all coming up in our next half hour. the race to win the mavericks. surf's up, almost. about 90 minutes away from the start of the mavericks surf competition. >> right now the top surfers making their way to the beach gearing up to take on the massive waves. kari is tracking how big those waves will get and let's start out with stephanie chuang live near half moon bay where she was talking to conants this morning. >> yeah. laura and sam, it's pretty amazing how relaxed they seem as they were eating breakfast in the room next door where they have been staying.
6:07 am
even though they're ato tackle these immensely huge waves. here in this room, you see there are much fewer boards than we saw the last couple of live reports, actually. surfers are already making their way down to the dock where they will eventually be taken out by boat and wait unit till the competition starts at 7:30 this morning. the last time we had mavericks. that's cole christenson. we talked to him earlier had. he is from hawaii. he got here at 8:00 last night. so, he is as well rested as can be. but, again, the last time that mavericks happened was in 2014. you have 24 of the world's best professional surfers. they're here and from as far away as australia and brazil. santa cruz and san francisco and the bay area well represented. this is what is known as the pinnacle of big wave surfing. we chatted with one of the surfers from hawaii who says, you know what, every time you see us together you know something's up. >> like when i see all my
6:08 am
friends that usually means we're going to go do something crazy. we're are all in one room together. it's on, you know. >> and so a lot of them are friends. back here live, you're looking at the bag and board of ken "skin dog" collins that is lying here next to the wall. we talked to him yesterday and he was saying his routine this morning was to get up at 5:30. maybe eat breakfast but that hissic is in knots so he can't really do that. soak in the bath tub in hot water to loosen himself before he heads out to the water. a lot of that sort of same routine going on for guys used to the big waves but the nerves are still there. live here in half moon bay, stephanie chuang. >> i would think after being in that cold water the hot bath would feel good after, too. we can watch the action from wherever you are. head to our website, nbcbayarea.com and click on the tab, mavericks how to watch. they describe this as the most risk-oriented event in
6:09 am
north america. that's how the mavericks organizers are talking about it. >> there you go. for those of us that are just regular joes without the adrenaline. still high surf for everybody else you're watching. >> not the weekend for amateurs to get out there on the water. we do have a high surfed as isry and on the coast waves up to 13 feet and that advisory continues until about 8:00 tomorrow morning. swells reaching 13 feet, but we'll also have the risk of sneaker waves and rip currents and long period swells. that means it takes a long time for the next wave to move in. may draw you out farther to the ocean. temperatures cool to start. only in the low 50s this morning. reaching to the upper 60s this afternoon. a look at all our microclimates today. 74 today in gilroy and san francisco 68 degrees and 72 in napa. 67 in oakland and livermore a high of 68 degrees. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. here's an update on the morning commute from. >> kari, start over in oakland
6:10 am
where 880 moves well past the sem and northbound and southbound with the headlights. first, look north of there. taillights move smoothly at the limit on our speed sensors all the way up to the bay bridge toll pretty much every school in the bay area. we're seeing a lighter flow of traffic reflected, as well. backup for the fastrak lanes. a smooth drive through the north bay and remember san francisco muni is back on typical service after super bowl city reopened. got to get the street names reopened. south 880 no big concern for the east bay or the tri-valley and here is the south bay northbound routes look great and live look at san jose shows you, yeah, not a big deal for 101. >> friday light, thank you, mike. 6:10. coming up a deal for now. details of the new agreement keeping the raiders in oakland for next season. stick around as i make my producers very uncomfortable.

it's been going on for half a day now. this is at a warehouse in hillsborough, new jersey. crews still patlibattling the f alarm fire that has been burning for more than 12 hours. the thick plumes of black smoke and fiery orange still billowing into the air. witnesses said they heard explosions and felt like the ground was shaking. no injuries reported so far. it is 6:14. the raiders are here to stay, at least for now. let's take a live look at 0.co where the team just signed a short-term lease to play for the 2016 season. raiders owner mark davis called it a win/win situation. a more long-term deal could be worked out. >> gives us certainty for this season, as well as flexibility for the following two seasons. and the certain lty is really important right now because free agency is coming up and players want to know where they are going to be playing and where they're going to be living and everything else. like i said, i think it's a win/win situation.
6:15 am
>> so far no deal on the table about building a new stadium in oakland. as for tickets, davis says he's not raising ticket prices as a thank you gesture to loyal fans. well, this is the french say that we americans are way too squeamish about nudity. >> a french facebook user posted a picture and facebook suspended his account. scott mcgrew, this puts you in an awkward position, as well. >> i thought we're pretty sophisticated in the bay area and i mean, we're grown ups, right. i googled the painting in question and called origin of the world. no, we cannot show that on television. i didn't even bother calling our. this is not the painting. no. but the question is, should facebook be allowed. who gets to decide? facebook users and facebook it itself, still not the painting. and what court should get to
