more scattered this morning as you head out. very hit or miss across the bay area and at times coming down very heavily. we're still tracking more of this as it continues to move in. even some lightning strikes further off to the north where we've seen some of that moving into parts of the north bay. so, watching out for some more lightning and also some brief, heavy rain that makes those roads slick. right now temperatures in the mid-50s and reaching into the low 60s this afternoon. i'll detail that and talk more about the showers that is coming up in the next microclimate forecast with mike. >> wet roads are all over the bay showing our road weather ind index, the effects of the rain from overnight. slick conditions and zoom into the south bay where reports of a car, sounds like a single car, possibly a spinout. and we'll show you 101 just north of there right there on the map and you see the water kicking up. even if it's not raining, you will have to use the windshield

wipers because the water kicks up on your windshield. back to you. a late night fire in the north bay took a deadly turn. >> the flames broke out in an apartment complex in vallejo. we're learning the person killed in the fire was an infant. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is at the scene gathering information and she'll give us an update in half an hour. in the meantime it, stay on top of this story throughout the morning and also download our free app for constant coverage. the man accused of shooting and killing at least two in san francisco's twin peeks double homicide on valentine's day. he shot and killed two people before carjacking two others. another victim suffered life-threatening injuries. he is a convicted felon. in 2014 he served jailtime for crashing a stolen car into a transit bus forcing the bus to slam into a home.

they want leland yee to serve eight years in prison on corruption charges. they broke the story when yee was arrested two years ago. the 67-year-old will be scheduled next week. yee pleaded guilty over the summer to conspiracy to the gauge inric te yee is set to be sentenced next week. around the nation apple may be taking heat over personal privac privacy. in the bay area some are standing by their position. several apple supporters went to the downden store in san francisco last night. their message to ceo tim cook they stand by his decision to refuse a judge's order to unlock the iphone used by one of the san bernardino attackers. diane feinstein is coming down on the side of u.s. security. >> now we had this terrorist act

in my state and a phone encrypted that could yield additional information. >> i don't think in this case it is worth it it to extract the data from this one phone. >> the phone may even contain information about plans for other terror attacks. some believe the case may eventually wind up in the u.s. supreme court. the bullet train may soon become a reality in the south bay. sources at city hall confirm to nbc bay area the high-speed rail is initially going to be built between san jose and bakersfield. that line will connect to los angeles. a formal announcement is expected tomorrow and this is a pivotal deit scissicision for tf san jose. the high-speed rail hub for a so-called grand central station. this is a rendering of the upgraded downtown dirdon

station. if all goes as planned this bullet train could be up and running in less than a decade. also have a major impact on cal train. with san jose being the bullet train hub, cal train would have to, the board suggests it could nearly double its capacity of 660,000 riders to 120,000 a day. before the bullet train rides right now people are trying to get around the bay area and the rain coming down. pretty slick roadways out there. we'll check in with mike in just a moment, but kari has a look at the radar. >> we are tracking scattered showers all across the bay area. heavy rain yesterday evening and even gusty winds and the winds have started to calm down and we're still tracking some of those showers moving through parts of the north bay. looking at san rafael, there is a heavy downpour there that will continue to move off to the east and we do expect it it to move it to vallejo within the next 30 to 45 minutes and we'll see that

all moving off to the east. i'll detail that coming up and let's see what's happening on the roadways with mike. >> not many drivers so not many incidents. if you're new to us, the green is where the roadway will be wet and puddling and ponding. a crash 24 right around the lafayette off ramp may be in lanes. you see the effects of rain all across the area and the crash on the shoulder and no slowing there. and more wet roads through san jose and let's check over here in milpitas. we have our friend bob out there. what are the conditions like? >> well, good morning there to you, mike. as kari has been talking to you all morning, the rain has been intermittent as we head through milpitas. we have a light drizzle at the worst, but the roads are wet. and i've driven from livermore through castro valley and the n nimitz this morning and we had these pockets of rain but throughout the entire drive the roads are wet and that's the most important thing you need to

be aware of. even if it it isn't raining the roads are slick. if you head into work this morning, you want to watch your speed and the distance and the person in front of you like we're doing right now as we head in, again. we're seeing a heavy drizzle, but nothing that should be make for a catastrophic commute in terms of backups. at least that's not what we're seeing right now. reporting live on northbound 880, bob redell "today in the bay." >> hope it stays smooth. we'll be right back. there's a new leader in santa

they say that he ripped them off and then just disappeared. >> liz wagoner has a story of a so-called bay area ghost attorney. >> good morning. he was hired to defend them. instead, he took their money and ran and they're talking about this man, south bay lawyer steven sculley. he repeatedly failed to keep his word and his court date. we obtained records that sculley no showed six times in as many months and that landed two bay area men in legal limbo when courts issued bench warrants for their arrest. they tried to get answers for months, but sculley wouldn't respond. his phone lines go dead and his office is empty. he is resigning from the state bar due to medical reasons. multiple times he promised to explain, he even agreed to an interview. when we arrived sculley no showed, again. court records we found may reveal why he wants to keep a low profile. the san mateo county court

4:45 here. a very wet start here to your morning. >> nodding our heads in agreement. >> it's been great to really good a good soaker and we got a little more rain than expected in some spots. we'll talk about that in a second. let's take a look outside to see what is happening now as you head out crossing the bay bridge and cameras still shaking around and we'll check in with mike to see what is happening on the roadways and slick spots because we had quite a bit of rain out there. let's take a look at some of these 24 hour rainfall totals. in lafayette and almost an inch in saratoga. livermore 0.8 and about the same in mill valley and twin peaks about the same in concord and menlow park and napa a little over a quart e e e er of an incn

jose. we see the system winding down and rain wrapping around the area of low measure and we will continue to track that rain off to the east. hev heavier downpours towards san rafael and within the next 20 minutes and then as we move across the south bay, we do have some rain moving through gilroy and morgan hill, but that's clearing morgan hill now will be moving south of gilroy within the next few minutes. some very wet roads. we will continue to see some scattered rain off and on throughout the morning. here we are at 6:00 still some heavy downpours moving through santa rosa. the last little push moving through the main morning commute time 9:00 or 10:00 this morning and very hit or miss and not everyone seeing that rain and then all clears out later on this evening and maybe a little bit of sunshine and looks like for most of the day it does stay mostly cloudy. our it temperatures will be reaching into the low 60s, much cooler than the way we started

this week. we were hitting the low 80s. now we are struggling to make it to 60 degrees. so, really good change in my eyes. we are seeing this strong cold front moving through and bringing things back to normal. we will have another chance of rain heading through tomorrow evening and then we'll clear things out for the weekend with another cold front moving through late sunday night. we'll talk more about that coming up and let's see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> we don't have any major incidents on the roadways. two major effects. right now the wind. that's the one kari told you about. shakes our emoryville camera. it is still there as far as the wind advisories. watch san mateo and the richmond san rafael bridges. wet roadways green where it's wet and blue where it might be soggy through the area just keep that in mind. unexpected over here in san lorenzo and a fitting name because a small fire reported in trees. this is just off of 880. from what i understand is not affecting the off ramp and
