nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. and that breaking news out of oakland this morning. flames ripped through several buildings and cars. we are live at the scene. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. those flames broke out early this morning on east 10th street in oakland. that scene remaining very active right now. >> bob redell just arrived. what can you tell us, bob. it looks huge. >> laura and sam, within the past 30 minutes the oakland fire department was able to extinguish that fire and the temple which is basically a home here that was converted into a temple. if you look to the right, you can see one of the other homes

extended to. it severely damaged that home and then what you can't see is the home in the back that also offered serious damage. a fire call came in around 1:50 and it it was a second alarm and when they arrived on the scene and saw how serious it was and how much it it was extending to the two other homes they decided to call for a third alarm. the fire destroyed a temple and severely damaged two homes and also destroyed five cars and three sheds. now, there were 11 people in the temple at the time and, according to one of the monks who's a member of the temple and according to the fire department neighbors what we've been able to gather they were in the process of some sort of celebration or preparing food for a celebration when this fire broke out. the monk alluded to the fact that maybe there was a candle that had tipped over and started this fire, though the fire department officially is still trying to figure out, they have an investigator out here what caused this fire.
4:32 am
11 people in the temple who were able to get out okay and then seven people in the house. they all got out okay. there were three people taken to the hospital, but they expect to be okay. all minor injuries. you had a family in the house to the left. that house survived major damage and the father said it was a scare for him and his family as they were awakened by the heat and flames as they slept. >> the kids and they just told me my wind from my house melt it. >> you are lucky you got out okay. >> life is more important. >> so, again, no serious injuries. three people taken to the hospital. amid all this destruction and once the sun comes up, you get a better sense of how this fire could easily spread and with the radiant heat you could see why it it was able to extend to the house to the right. when you come back out, there is an image of what the temple
4:33 am
looks like before it it was destroyed and what it it looks like now. as it you come out here live, it looks like the oakland fire department is doing extension work to the roof othat hof thato the right and what is simmering inside so that house is being severely damaged and looks actually worse than that. definitely not inhabitable and same with the other house in the back, which, by the way, no one was home at the time. in oakland, bob redell "today in the bay." >> 20 people able to get out of the tempal and the home. we'll stay on top of this story throughout the morning. stay with nbc bay area both on air and online and also head to our website, nbcbayarea.com for instant information as soon as we get it. 4:33. happening today as the standoff between the fbi and apple continues, protest iters in support of the tech giant are planning massdemonstrations
