two more homes severely damaged as a fire rages through this neighborhood in oakland. i'm bob redell. "today in the bay" starts now. all right. we're going to have an update on that momentarily. good morning on this. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have been first following since we came on the air at 4:30 this morning. take a look at these videos. the massive flames ripping through a buddhist temple, burning homes and wiping out several cars along the way. >> let's get right to bob redell. people were sleeping inside that temple when this all broke out and there were 11 people inside. there were 11 people inside. >> 11 people inside the cambodian buddhist temple here. i know it's hard to see, but the where the firefighters are enter itti ing is the location of the temple and destroyed once you get past the staircase right there. we spoke to one of the monks that was awoken around 1:50 this

morning by smoke and fire. thad buddhist monk and the ten other people inside the temple were able to get out before that fire ooerve to overtook the building. when they arrived on the scene, they saw how serious this fire was and what the risk it was putting out there to the homes next door that they called for a third alarm. as you can see that fire engulfed the temple and destroyed it and then it it went on to severely damage two more homes. a home to the right where seven people were inside. they got out okay and then a severely damaged a home in the back. fortunately, no one was in there at the time. but as you can see, the fire is now out. we did speak with a member of the temple who lives across the street when this all started. >> i've been there every time. >> how do you feel about it? >> i feel, now i feel sad.

>> three people did go to the hospital with minor injuries, which is remarkable considering how serious this fire was. as far as the cause, he indicated a candle that might have been lit and somehow got knocked over in the night. what is sad today is today temple, the people in the temple were supposed to be celebrating some sort of event. it's not clear what. if it was a hoday or an event but preparing today for this celebration. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> picking up the pieces instead of that celebration. thank you. we'll check back in with bob throughout the morning as he tries to get official confirmation about what causes the fire. bob is tweeting out updates from the fire and you can tweet him. also posted raw video to our facebook page. turning now to our

microclimate forecast this morning. let's take a peek outside. a look at the glorious bay bridge illuminated. another gorgeous day. let's check in with kari hall. >> good morning. laura, we do start out with cool temperatures and clear skies all across the bay area. as you head out, grab a jacket. only 42 degrees in the north bay. we had some very light fog, but not seeing it as thick as we had yesterday. looking at the highs today into the low to mid-70s and well above average with a lot of sunshine, but a beautiful day. and we'll be talking more about this for the rest of the week. only some slight rain chances. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. get an update from 101 in san francisco from mike. >> what is happening they're trying to get the second flat bed tow truck and north 101 vermont is where the crash is blocking your two left lanes and this is causing a big backup from the 280 split. folks taking 280 northbound in towards the city streets and finding the other ways around.

that will be an issue and continuing to build. we'll track that side. meanwhile from the oakland side, the bay bridge toll mrauz saw the only thing you deal with and that is the standard backup. smooth drive over here building for hayward and castro valley area. the express lane that is open, guys. as we look to the rest of the bay, we see the south bay with northbound 101 through san jose. not a major problem right now. it's tuesday and we expect a heavier commute right now and see things for the south bay and coming over towards the east bay, as well. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 6:04. new details and a new sketch to help police grab a group of men who are targeting shoppers at an upscale mall. throwing one of three men connected to two separate purse snatchings in two days at the popular stoneridge mall. a teenage woman and a woman in her 60s were attacked over the weekend. neither victim was hurt.

"today in the bay" kris sanchez will join us in about 20 minutes. a disturbing discovery for a group of people fishing near the dumbarton bridge they found a body near that pier sunday night. they called fremont police. it is unknown at this time how long that body had been in the water. detectives are now trying to figure out who the person is and how they got there and how they died. a soccer referee recovering from a traumatic brain injury and broken jaw this morning. it it comes after a player sucker punched him over the weekend. witnesses say the adult league ref was ooofficiating a match when he used his yellow card, he gave one out. the outraged player then ran up behind the ref and punched him and then took off in a white chevy pickup. >> it sounds really scary. i would hate to have it be with my kid playing. >> i think it's pretty wrong for the first place. no need to get mad at the referee who is doing his job. >> san francisco police officers are still looking for the

attacker. on a campus racked by recent string of assaults, an investigation now under way about another possible sexual assault of uc berkeley. campus police say the alleged assault happened friday night between midnight and 1:00 a.m. at a party at a fraternity house. no description of the suspect. this after several assaults last week. the berkeley police department is also investigating this crime. new this morning, a new lawsuit from the family of a man who died in custody at this santa rita jail. they blame inadequate health care. mario martinez died last summer from as muthma attack. announce a new federal lawsuit blaming his death on a slow response from guards and health care workers. past, deputies have argued the response was timely. happening later today, a worldwide showing of support for apple. people will gather to back the

company's decision to help not unlock a terrorist's iphone. >> one of the many places for today's rallies. good morning, chuck. >> good morning, laura and sam. the lights are on at the amstore behind me at university avenue in palo alto but the rally is still hours away. scheduled to begin at 5:30 late today. the protesters aiming their attention towards the fbi. it it wants apple's help in unlocking san bernardino shooter farook's iphone. tim cook apple's ceo reed a statement yesterday to employees of apple saying at stake is the data security of hundreds of millions of law-abiding people and setting a dangerous precedent that threatens everyone's civil liberty. four rallies are planned palo alto and similar to the one that happened this weekend in san francisco in support of apple's

position. the fbi wants to unlock the iphone to see who farook was communicating with before the december 2nd shooting rampage that killed people in san bernardino. last week a judge ordered apple to comply with the fbi's request to remove a feature that es information stored on iphones after ten unsuccessful attempts to unlock it. cooperating with the government in this case would open pandora's box. reporting live in palo al it tom chuck coppola. >> scott mcgrew has been following the back and forth between apple and the fbi since the story broke last week. he'll have an update for us in less than ten minutes. it is 6:08 right now. the national park service is tightening its grip on leash laws in the recreation area. propose rules to limit including ocean beach, and rodeo beach.

marin county could see the biggest impact it would lose off leash dog walking everywhere in the golden gate national recreational area. a two-month comment period on the proposed rules starts tomorrow with two hearings late next month. >> off the leash. how about off the hook. that's what our weather has been like for the last several days and that's where it continues. >> that's right. not a bad thing unless you're a meteorologist looking for something to do. >> little bored without the rain. here we go. start out with cool temperatures this morning low 40s. in the east bay as well as the north bay. but we're looking at highs today reaching into the low to mid-70s. so, will be another beautiful day. great dog walking weather. 71 degrees in the castro and 78 deit gree degrees in santa rosa. we will be approaching some records and our temperatures continue to warm up. i'll talk more about that coming up in eight minutes. let's get an update and looks

like a slow down in the south bay. here's mike. >> in fact, i think chp was slowing folks down. we saw basically a rolling traffic a wall of cars heading north and right here starting to recover. let's look at the map just north of this traffic shot outside of our view. a crash reported by chp and that is likely what cleared to the shoulder. a bit of slowing for 101 and 87. nothing dramatic for the south bay. very pleasant. looking north of the san mateo bridge. the bay bridge toll mrauz plaza is one issue and the two left lanes blocked by that crash and can't remove those cars yet. 280 is your better bet. we have this big slowing and this has been going on for a while and following my tweets. oout out of the north bay, crash blocking one lane from the crash and 680 westbound and 80 is backed up through the area and south of there, though, keeps the carquinez bridge clear. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 6:10.

the reason dozens of people were forced to evacuate quickly from a passenger plane. plus, should the uber app have a panic button? we continue to get updates and track breaking news out of oakland on east tenth street. that's where that fire broke out overnight about 2:00 in the morning at a cambodian buddhist temple. 11 people inside at the time and bob redell telling us they were in the midst or just started secelebrating and then a live report as they search for the cause of that fire coming up in just minutes.

an update tabreaking news we have been following since our 4:30 newscast. at least two homes and several cars in oakland this morning. these are live pictures of the damage that left behind on the left of your screen and video from just a few hours ago on your right. we do know three people were hurt, but they are said to be okay. bob redell has been at the scene all morning long and join us with an update at 6:30 including word of a possible cause. in international news, drama in japan as frantic passengers jump on to emergency chutes. you see them doing it right there after a fire onboard the airplane. it happened at an airport in northern japan. an engine fire forced the pilot to abort takeoff as smoke started to filter into the cabin. all 159 people made it off the

plane safely, but three passengers did suffer minor injuries. a 97-year-old peninsula woman is getting kicked out of the home she lived in for more than six decades. marie hatch has lived in this burlingame house for 63 years. she said the former landlord was a close friend and promised she could stay in the home for the rest of her life. however, the new landlord says she's not aware of an agreement and is giving hatch and her long-time roommate two months to find a new place to live. >> we're staying optimistic that accommodations can be reached. we had a good time in this house. >> the two women attended a town hall meeting in san mateo last night. several other frustrated said unmanageable rent increases and unfair evictions. she will share the information she is collecting with the secretary of housing and urban development as she tries to search for solutions. after a lot of talk about safeties, uber resisting calls

to create a panic button. >> a driver shooting eight people in kalamazoo, michigan, and driving people between the crimes. >> uber has created one in india but uber tells reporters it doesn't make sense in america because it will interfere or delay people calling 911. several uber riders said jason dalton was acting erratically, little did they know he was shooting people between rides. dalton has confessed to all eight shootings. uber said the man had no criminal background and passed security checks just fine. in fact dalton had a nearly five-star rating from his passenger. uber urges people to simply call 911 if they feel like they're endangered during a ride. uber riders in kalamazoo complain using the uber app and they complained on facebook. while no one keeps careful

statistics it can be just as dangerous as being a passenger. bill bratton is weighing in, once again, on the controversy over apple's refusal to crack open its iphone to the fbi. apple says creating a security back door on one phone would threaten the security of all phones in an op-ed in "new york times" bratton said complying with constitutionally legally court orders is not creating a back door and the democracy. that's a front door. other news, there is now no drinking on the job at san francisco zenefits. when a sales person lands a new account. it has a new boss, david sax, who is creating new rules after the previous ceo resigned after accusations the company was not properly licensed in several states. there you saw him. "the wall street journal" guys says there has been a rule for some time in having sex in

the office stairwells. they needed to add in that rule so everyone was clear. >> so what is zenefits supposed to be doing? >> what are you supposed to be doing? ideally, aemp gives hr benefits. >> hr, ta. that's interesting. >> helping with a lot of love. thank you much. 6:18 right now. some scientists are calling a large asteroid barreling towards earth right now a little too close for comfort. traveling at more than 30 miles per hour. >> before we unnerve everybody that asteroid is supposed to go by the earth in about two weeks. the scientists say the asteroid known as 2013 tx-68. you'll have to look that one up in the records. named after the year it was discovered is about the size of a warehouse. >> oh, great. >> but, hey, don't worry about it. they're confident, they're

confident it's not going tahit the earth. >> it could be as close as about 20,000 miles or as far as 10 million miles. the asteroid is not going tahit us. there is no concern about that. it will miss us. >> 20,000 miles sounds a little close for comfort, you may remember that three years ago an asteroid exploded over russia remember that with all the dash cam videos and stuff injuring hundreds of people. again, scientists say this will not be the case. don't worry with the latest asteroid. >> we're showing you that, but it's not going to happen. >> it's fine. >> it's a really nice day. >> the only thing we can guarantee that is not coming outof tou outof the sky right now is rain. >> rain free for the next couple ofs as our temperatures warm up. beautiful shot this morning. get on out the door so you can see that. we will have amazing sunrise and a lot of pinks and blues in the sky as the sun comes up. we also have some high clouds

that have been in and around the bay area as this approaching cold front moves in and just kind of fizzles out. also been watching to see if there is any fog and it is well off shore. looks like this morning we start out with all clear conditions and we will continue tasee that throughout the day. looking at these temperatures now, this is definitely cool. you still need a jacket as we start out. it's 48 degrees in the peninsula. the north bay at 40 degrees and as you take a look at that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you see how warm it gets today. so as we go hour by hour in san jo jose, 55 degrees at 9:00 and a few clouds starting to mix in and look what happens at noon the sun breaks out and temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s today by this afternoon. over the next three days, we will still have above average temperatures and we may be setting some new records, especially on thursday when we get up into the upper 70s and keep in mind this is still late february. these temperatures will feel

more like may or early june as we will be up to 68 degrees in san francisco. a few more clouds mixing in and temperatures cooling down just a bit. and high pressure keeps it it dry over the next few days. we will only have slight rain chances as these approaching cold fronts will be fizzling out and moving closer to the coast. we'll have a chance of rain late friday. as you can see, it looks like a lot of that moisture stays well to the north of the bay area. i'll be keeping tabs on that and keeping tabs on what's happening on the roadways. let's check in now with mike. >> well, kari, back to san jose where a second incident happened in front of our camera and folks where the onramp and had regular traffic come together. that just cleared seconds ago and now back towards 101 and northbound. look at your map. i put both the incidents on the map and they were in the area and not causing much slowing. we'll focus on san francisco, that's the big issue north 101. one lane blocked at vermont. one lane has opened and now

three lanes getting in towards san francisco and that 280 extension a much easier drive as you're headed towards that general area. look at dublin westbound 580 does show some slowing and not so bad around and why we had problems yesterday and later on today, as well. >> those express lanes working. thank you very much. coming up next crumbling concerns. the steps cal trans are taking later today taensure all drivers are safe while traveling across the bay bridge. pleasanton police may make an announcement as early as today about the suspect involved in two strong arm robberies. one of an older woman and the other of a teenage girl. armed with a rifle - and

6:25. armed with a rifle and targeting shoppers. police are on the hunt for suspects who robbed teenage girl and a 63-year-old woman and suffered attacks over the weekend. >> laura, those attackers punched the girl and pushed down the 63-year-old woman. "today in the bay" kris sanchez and pleasanton police could make a big announcement as early as today. >> not clear if police tracked down theo expected in both of those strong arm robberies but did allude to a possible break in the case when we spoke with them. pleasanton police were quick to release this sketch of one of the suspects. he is described as an african-american man between 18 and 25 years old. medium build wearing a hoodie and we recognize that is pretty vague. police say he didn't strike

alone, though outside that pf change saturday night around 8:00. he was with two other young men when he went up to a 17-year-old girl and punched her in the face. a day later on sunday afternoon a 63-year-old woman. that victim said she saw a shotgun or a rifle aimed right at her. people who work and shop at that mall are obviously concerned. >> that makes us more cautious when we're walking out to the street. we have a cash and things a lot. we have to be on the look out. >> makes us more nervous to leave our cars in that parking lot. >> police say they may have an announcement as early as this morning. until there is an arrest. police will not feel comfortable parking or working at stoneridge mall. you may see increased police patrols. still, watch where you park. kris sanchez, "today in the

break nugs right now at 6:30. sky high claims destroy a cambodian buddhist temple. two other homes and several cars inland. >> right now that scene still very active as firefighters are working their way through smoldering debris. "today in the bay" bob redell is live on the scene and the oakland fire department might know what started this fire. what are you hearing there? >> well, sam and laura, we just spoke with an oakland fire department battalion chief and their initial investigation revealed that 100 to 1,000 candles lit inside for an annual buddhist celebration might have been the cause of this fire. as you can see, destroyed the oakland cambodian buddhist temple here on east tenth street in oakland. this is a fire that started around 1:50 this morning. as you can see in this video, gulfed the temple, the flames did.

severely damaged two homes next door and destroyed five cars and three. oakland fire and oakland ended up calling for a third alarm because this fire is so big and they need that extra help. the 11 people inside the temple escaped and three went to the hospital one with minor burns and the other two with minor injuries. seven people to the house got okay and no one was in the house that burned in the back and the house to the left, sustained minor damage and with a frightening experience for the family asleep inside. suddenly awoken by the heat and flames next door. >> and they just told me that my windows from -- >> life is more important. >> based on our research online, today is the annual buddhist holiday known as the butter lamp festival. at night believers in this

we'll talk more about these warm temperatures in just a few minutes but mike has an update on 101 in san francisco. what's going on. >> that crash cleared just after my last report. we have now all lanes cleared 101 at vermont and look how quickly speeds are recovering and that indicates lighter flow of traffic there and that is the case around the bay bridge. metering lights on and slow down the east shore freeway and the maze not so much of a deal. there is the walnut creek interchange and the dublin interchange not a big deal and hayward shows a drive. a live look at san jose and north 101 does show some slowing but a couple crashes and we recovered nicely there and we're seeing a build there once again and the pink sunrise sam was talking about. the bigger look at the south bay coming up. >> we'll look forward to it, mike. thanks so much. decisn 2016 all eyes on nevada this morning as the republican presidential hopefuls fight for 30 delegates up for grabs a live look.

>> "today" show peter alaxeneder joining us live in las vegas this morning. donald trump the leader in most polls there running double-digit leads but the bigger question here a fiercer fight for second. who is going to take second place? >> hey, laura and sam, good morning to you. started to feeling like a vegas act. trump the inevitable. he doesn't lead here in vegas. polling ahead of his rivals and what is stunning about those people now fighting for second place is they basically haven't even put a finger on donald trump so far and you can see that he's relaxed and care free. a rally here in vegas last night where he would like to punch a protester. wait until you see that clip. marco rubio trying to establish and kasich insists he will stick around and wants to be here through his home state of ohio and ted cruz picked a bad day to have a bad day yesterday. firing one of his top aides after he put out an inaccurate

cal trans is meeting with national safety investigation about cracks on the bay bridge that was documented in an internal report. a report recently obtained by nbc bay area news. includes detailed photographs of that corrosion inside the tunnel. recently as you probably remember a chunk of concrete the size of a tire came crashing down on a woman's car in the bay bridge tunnel. we talked to an engineer who said cal trans needs to take action and now. >> this is long term. this is not just superficial corrosion. the rebar is likely as corroded as out here. something like this should be caught by regular inspections. >> we did an inspection last july and there were no obvious problems then. >> cal trans said it might consider installing a netting or some kind of barrier to catch falling concrete after further inspection. ologi also happening today, e

on unrelated charges, but police are not saying if he is also the person of interest in that homicide case. 6:38. a controversial verdict sparking debate in the south bay. the naacp sharp criticism about the racially charged case at san jose state university. williams said he was tormented by three white room mates back in 2013. williams claims he was choked in his room and called racially derogatory names. the students were found guilty of battery, but not a hate crime. and the jury could not reach a verdict on the other two defenders. now the naacp is responding, telling us, "it's disappointing the clear and unambiguous signs of racial hatred were not recognized. we still have a long way to go as a society to understand what is truly a hate crime." this morning checking out all kind of beautiful sunrises and a sign of things to come

here. >> we go. keeping kari hall monitoring busy. >> be nice to get some rain, but have some dry weather and warming temperatures. and a beautiful start to the day as you head. grab a jacket, it's only 45 degrees in oakland and 50 in san carlos and san francisco. looking at highs today warming up quite a bit. we're up to 76 degrees in dill gilroy. half moon bay and 71 degrees today in the castro. 73 in napa and 74 in oakland and 75 today in pleasanton. very warm weather continueprise the next few days. i'll detail that coming up in about seven minutes. let's get an update on what is happening in san francisco now with mike. >> we have good recovery for the city, kari. looking towards the silicon valley, as well. gradual build northbound 85, 87 and 101 not showing a big deal. typical pattern but a lighter flow. looking over towards the tri-valley between greenville and the dublin interchange a nice, easy drive flow of traffic there largely held by that

who shot and killed a 19-year- old san jose man. john deming junior was shot by officer daniel kunke a 19-year-old san jose man. shot by officer daniel last summer. he broke into a classic car dealership and started jumping on cars and then attacked the officer.

farook. he told reporters he is sympathetic to apple, that is a bit more cautious considering his company, facebook, issued a statement far more supportive of apple's effort. facebook made that statement right as the controversy unfolded saying we will continue to fight aggressively against requirements for companies to weaken the security of their system. bill gates has weighed in on the encryption controversy, as well. he's coming down in favor of the fbi. gates who founded microsoft said he believes the government's asseritation that the request to break into the phone is a one-time special case. gates is the onlier tech leader to take the fbi side, at least publicly. we don't know mr. gates' reasoning but we do know how he's different. horrified by revelations that they tapped into their computer connections. sheer anger and they let the

president know. now, microsoft was targeted. this is one of the slides that is easily available on the internet showing nsa workers which of your secrets they could see. not only is microsoft on the list, it's at the top of the list, but it didn't take action the way apple did. one of apple's first action is encrypted phones top to bottom when it saw that slide and it is actually how we ended up today. >> so interesting. >> try to keep it in place. thank you very much, scott. they're not for tech companies any more. so-called nap pods have come to the cal campus. >> this sounds like a great idea for everybody. just installed four areas that they're calling rest zones and nat includes a nap pod like this one at the student center. comfy chairs around campus so people can rest in between classes just in time for mid-terms if you don't oversleep them. >> and sometimes like where we live is really far from campus and it's really hard for us to take naps.

peninsula, it is 50 at 42 degree. let's drop in on the east bay now where we see it's 47 degrees in hayward and fremont and sunol at 57 degrees while brentwood at 47 degrees to start this day. a lot of sunshine and clear and cool conditions and high clouds moving in filtering the sunshine, but still a very nice temperature at lunchtime. and 60s in san francisco and upper 60s for this afternoon. and the peninsula 73 degrees now. these will be the temperatures as you drive home. in the east bay at 73 degrees and top down and the windows wide open with the sunglasses on. it will be one of those days. we're in the upper 70s for tomorrow in the south bay now we may be setting some new records here because just keep in mind this is the end of february and we shouldn't be this warm. we should be in about the mid-60s. at 68 degrees friday in san francisco. more clouds moving in and that will bring our temperatures down just koppel of degrees.

we still do have high pressure controlling our weather. it's actually been, excuse me, blocking any cold fronts from moving in. will see the rain continue to fizzle out as it approaches the coast. for today and then again on friday or maybe a couple sprinkles late and then again on sunday we will have a slight of some rain. we're going to keep it in the forecast. just trying to keep the hope alive. we need a lot of that rain to move through, but it looks like most of that rain just dries up before approaching the coast. on saturday, bright, beautiful sunny weather. temperatures in the mid-60 and then on sunday we keep more of those same temperatures just a little bit warmer and partly to mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of some showers. i'll be keeping an eye on that. now, let's get an update on what is happening across the bay area. a look at the commute, here's mike. >> keeping the rain hopes alive. we're all keeping those hopes alive. over here i found flash lights and southbound 880 and no slowing and no problems. no incidents reported past the coliseum.

around the bay and bottom of your screen north 880 right around industrial. a fender bender pulled to the shoulder and bay bridge metering lights and slowing down the east shore freeway. 24 off of walnut creek interchange and in towards the caldecott. making it over towards the dumbarton and 101 from palo alto and volume of traffic holding up very well. southbound with the taillights where you lose a lane you'll slow a little bit and the south bay we have that built for silicon valley. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. happening right now, news out of arizona at least four are dead and another in critical condition after a shooting inside of a home in glendale. that home was also set on fire, but police shoot and killed the suspect. he is believed to be a son who shot his parents and his sister.

welcome back. we're going to get one final check of today's top stories before we send you off to "today" show in just a few minutes. let's get right to bob redel live at the scene of breaking news we have been following since 4:30 this morning. good morning to you, laura and sam. here in oakland the fire department is honing in on the cause of the three alarm fire that you can see destroyed the oakland cambodian buddhist temple here on east tenth street. they believe it was lit candles.

100 to 1,000 candles that buddhist monks who live here left lit overnight as part of an annual celebration. that was one of the buddhist monks awoken by the fire last night inside his temple. he is one of 11 people slept inside before flames engulfed the structure. three went to the hospital one with a minor burn and the other two with minor injuries. the fire spread and severely damaged to a home next door where seven people were asleep inside. they got out okay and also severely damaged a house behind. no one was inside that structure. also destroyed three sheds and five cars. now, based on our research online. today is the annual buddhist holiday known as the butter lamp festival. at night leaders in that religion lit candles to represent the light of buddhism which may explain why so many
