forecast. happy friday, kari. >> cooler temperatures moving in, sam and laura. start out this morning seeing some clouds and a few of the light showers just off to the north and west of here. we will see that rain moving into the north bay while the rest of us sees increasing cloud cover and sprinkles later on today and now 52 degrees in the east bay, pieninsula and south bay and looking at a high of 70 degrees in the south bay while san francisco has a chance of rain and 62 degrees and i'll detail exactly what you can expect as you go out and about today. let let's see how it looks across the bay bridge with mike. >> traffic smooth across the bay and overnight road crews just off the berkeley curve there was a fender bender on market there. just want to make sure that everything is flowing smoothly through the area for the next few minutes. coming up in and towards santa clara and we'll talk about that more and see the overview and no real slowing. let's take the south bay. back to you.

>> you wouldn't know anything about it. >> i don't know anything about bankrupting. >> oh, yeah, a lot of sharp exchange last night and the equivalent of a political street fight. marco rubio, ted cruz boat taking their swings at donald trump. this was the most explosive night of the presidential race so far. all five of the republican presidential hopefuls squaring off in houston. >> so, these next five days are critical and as nbc bay area shows us, they certainly knew it. >> reporter: marco rubio threw out the first punch. the florida senator challenging donald trump on the topic of immigration. >> that you acknowledge that, for example, you're the only person on the stage that has been fined for hiring people to work on your projects illegally. >> reporter: senator ted cruz came out swinging, as well. >> i really find it amazing that donald believes he is the one that discovered the issue of illegal immigration.

>> reporter: the two men in the delegate count and the polls standing up to the frontrunner in the last face-to-face before the super tuesday vote. >> he hired workers from poland and had to pay a million dollars. >> reporter: trump, as he has throughout the campaign, fired back. >> when you say crazy zealous are you talking about you? >> give me a break. >> reporter: two others, but as usual, ben carson and john kasich were muted. >> let me just finish. because i don't get to talk that much. >> reporter: the questions touched on the hot button topics that have framed the race including health care, religious freedom and appointing a new supreme court justice. but the primary folks for the top three candidates seemed to be on each other. >> i watched him repeat himself five times. >> reporter: the bickering at times taking over this debate. the fire and intensity boiling over in the arena. super tuesday is looming and the stakes have never been higher. >> that's good tv to wake up to.

a disabled advocate on the peninsula accused one taxi cab company of hiking up prices for people in wheelchairs. the center for independence with individuals with disabilities filed a discrimination suit. the group claims it did test rides for fares with people in wheelchairs and those who are not in wheeltchairs. they say fares were more than three times as high for the exact same ride. now, nbc bay area spoke with an attorney for that company who says he hopes to meet with the

plaintiff. >> my client is very upset and they would like nothing more than to resolve this with the plaintiff and renew their commitment to the disability community. >> that lawsuit demands that sarah stop overcharging and establish a monitoring system to make sure that all customers are treated eke. at 4:40. a device some say should never have been put into women and now it's resulted in thousands of complaints. >> senior investigative reporter vicky nguyen shows us the device. it's called pelvic mesh or bladder sling. the fda approved to fix prolapse where your organs shift out of place and fix incontinence in women without surgery.

let's get a look outside to get you started on this friday morning. it is very nice and clear looking at the bay bridge. we had a couple of spots with low clouds and some fog, but expect a chance of a few spotty, slight sprinkles later on this evening, but as for now, it looks pretty good. and taking a look at the satellite radar. we can see the approach of the next system that will knock back the heat. we have to see for the past couple of days. cooler temperatures moving in along with these clouds but for some of us clouds be all you see today. and now as you head out, it is 45 degrees in the east bay and the peninsula at 53 degrees and the north bay now at 48 degrees and as we get a closer look at the south bay, it's 49 in morgan hill, downtown 48 degrees in santa clara and at 50 degrees. hour by hour in san francisco, a lot of clouds today. not as much sunshine and temperatures staying in the upper 50s throughout the morning. and then as we go into the afternoon, the sun starts to peek out a bit and highs in the

lower 60s. with the approach of the system, we will have a high surf advisory in effect with swells up to 14 feet and long period waves meaning there will be up to 18 to 19 seconds between those waves. it gives those waves plenty of time to drag you back out into the ocean. so, be aware of that. and we will start to see some scattered rain moving in by about 6:00 in santa rosa. san francisco, seeing a slight chance of rain later tonight and then the rest of the bay area just seeing some clouds, but overall, a mostly dry day. heading into the weekend, we will have highs reaching the low 70s. in the tri-valley on tomorrow and then sunday another slight chance of rain and that one also looks like it pretty much dries up and a more significant chance of rain next week. another look at the forecast coming up. let's head to the tri-valley now with mike. >> show our camera to show folks westbound 580 moving well and this express lane has been doing well all week and now we'll see if this continues through next

and spending and consumer sentiment and a second read on fourth quarter gop which is likely tashow the economy slowed more than previously thought. the dow rising 212 points to 16697. meanwhile, ubs will pay $33 million to settle a lawsuit claiming it sold toxic mortgages to credit unions before the financial crisis that later failed. provided documents and the national credit union association has now recovered nearly $2.5 billion from banks through lawsuits stemming from the financial crisis. and republic airways which flies shorter routes for united, delta has filed for bankruptcy. it had to ground maybes because of pilot shortages. it offers 1,000 flights in the u.s. and bahamas will continue operating while in bankruptcy. sam and laura, back to you.

>> many people who haven't heard of the company will have an impact, you mentioned american and delta. the largest container ship ever to dock in the u.s. is going to be leaving in just a few hours from now. say good-bye just when we were saying hello. benjamin franklin mega ship heading to its next stop, seattle, before heading to asia. our crew was there as it aarri e aarrived at the port of oakland. made its maiden voyage on new year's eve. that whole idea of requiring permits for bonfires is now officially up in smoke. that's according to "the chronicle" which reports the golden gate national recreation area is extinguishing the idea. the plan calls for a new $35 permit. critics argue it will undermine spontaneous bonfires and not to mention the legal question. in another win for beach burners the park service agreed to create more space to areas

allowing bonfires. s'more. >> no one would be against that. adding color to crosswalks to improve student safety. >> three fourth grade girls wanted to make crossing nearby streets safer after a fellow student was hit last year. they came up with this plan. students simply grab a bright orange flag from a bin and hold it in the air as they cross in front of cars and then they place it back in another bin on the other side of the street for the next student to use. >> if you can't see somebody, how do you know they are there? the flag is such a bright color and you can actually see it. >> look at that. making a big difference. all five crosswalks around the school now have more than 20 flags thanks to donations. the girls will be honored by the campbell city council next month for their idea. good for them. >> worked really well in other parts of san jose, as well. majestic and now missing in action. the search is on for a bald eagle on the peninsula. how it slipped away from its

head into the weekend. take advantage of all there is to do here and a slight chance of rain today and again on sunday and that shouldn't ruin your outdoor plans. heading to monterey, upper 60s to lower 70s in santa cruz at the boardwalk and 71 degrees and 68 degrees and a few more clouds heading into sunday. over the next couple of days, we only have some slight rain chances and many weather systems staying to the north of us and looks like we won't get our next significant chance of rain until maybe next thursday. we will see more of this dry weather, but then hopefully after this we start to see more of those storms starting to roll in. i'll keep an eye on that and let's see what's happening now as you head across the south bay with mike. >> first we'll start with a live shault of s shot of san jose. 4:54 in the morning. we'll look at the map and we have such great speeds over the bay. overnight closure and same thing we had yesterday that off ramp

is closed just for another half hour through the area and meanwhile north of there, a nice, easy drive. a smooth flow of traffic over here. as you head over towards the bay bridge with no metering lights not a major commute spot, but this is the report on chp and talking about a small car fire. a smoldering car and we'll watch this. of course, we're in the hill there's and watch out in the area. back to you. >> mike, thank you. right now the search for ma missing bald eagle continuing this morning. new members say that sequoia there flew away when they took her out for a flight demonstration on monday. they say that she was in hot pursuit of a red tail hawk. now, not the first time that she's done this, but it is the longest time that she's not returned. sequoia is partially paralyzed and missing part of her foot, that is the result of being shot out of the sky. daylight savings time doesn't begin for another two weeks but one bay area lawmaker would rather get rid of it altogether. will talk today about his

proposal to end california's daylight-saving time. he says it wreaks havoc on people's body clocks and elderly have a particularly hard time with it. calls for california remaining on standard time over the entire year. as long as i get my extra hour in there somewhere, i'm good. >> we need that. three members of one oakland family right now getting special recognition for their dedication to boosting the lives of young people. >> students at oakland's clairmont middle school last night honored the doubly family. they have coached student athletics in oakland for a combined, get this, 92 years. every sport from football to basketball to track to volleyball. the school is honoring them as part of blast history month. fanta fantastic. >> maybe a stadium name might be nice down the road, too. coming up in court today and preparing to be charged with murder. but the man accused in the death of a san jose mother is facing new accusations.
