conditions with kari. >> you do need to allow some extra time to get to where you're going this morning with visibility very low and the fog is thick this morning. let's take a look at all our microclimates you can barely see anything on any of those cameras it has been pretty dense everywhere except for the tri-valley where we do have some little bit better improvement in that visibility this morning looking at highs today in the mid to low 70s. let's check in with mike to see how it looks as you cross the bridge. >> we're trying to see the bridge. wires crossing our views. you can see for a pretty good distance and that fog a major factor all around. this happens to be the san mateo bridge coming down to foster city. highlighted orange there pretty much all around the water you do have that. fog will be an issue and chp issued overnight fog advisories for all your bridges. the san mateo bridge did not get a fog advisory, but i will say be careful out there. the carquinez and benicia bridge and you have a source that is

out there, i'll hand it over to you. >> bob redell in the thick of the fog this morning. pretty soupy conditions might be the word of the day, bob. >> well, it is patchy fog, good morning to you, laura. northbound 101 approaching moffett field there on the right where the red lights are and we're starting to see some of the fog come in. we were just in san jose where it was bad. i can tell you coming in this morning from the east bay you see it on the sunol grade which given the fact that it is a valley and once we get further north along 101 especially past the dumbarton bridge you'll see foggy conditions that could affect your drive into work. you want to remember, obviously, slow down and if you are driving in fog, do not use your bright headlights because that will create a white wall which flashes back in your eyes and makes it very difficult to use you want to use your fog lights if you have them, or your

regular lights and watch the driving distance between you and the car in front of you. fairly good driving conditions right now. we got probably a quarter mile visibility on the fog and we do expect it to get worse as we head northbound here on 1 o01. reporting live in mountainview, bob redell, "today in the bay." we are following breaking news in san jose where a chase ended with a car crashing into a home. it happened on park avenue not far from meridian. a deputy tried to stop a driver who ran a red light and the suspect crash under to the home and reportedly ran away. deputies and police still lacking for that driver right now. another concern, the crash actually caused a gas leak. fire crews came to the scene and ended up capping that leak. stephanie chuang headed to the scene right now to gather more information and she'll join us for a live update in our next half hour. a busy overnight, laura. still developing, two minors

arrested after robbing a south bay liquor store with a gun. a third suspect still on the run. it started in mountain view just before 11:00 last night at the licker and food mart on california street. officers say the suspects took off in a white suv. they tried to pull the car over on highway 101, but the driver refused to pull over. the suv eventually led officers through city streets in menlo park before one of the suspects jumped out of the car and ran off into the creek. police caught and arrested the other two people. happening today, we may be getting our first look at evidence against three correctional deputies charged with killing an inmate at the santa clara county jail. the prosecution and defense are expected to present their case during a preliminary hearing this morning. the prosecution is hoping they have enough evidence to go to trial. matthew farri all pleaded guilty

. problems reported inside santa clara county jails for month. our investigation found alleged abuse, including reports of inmates being locked in solitary confinement for long periods of time. you can see the investigation for yourself at nbcbayarea.com. you couldn't tell as much during bob's live shot a second ago, but some of the cameras right now, look at that, fog. kari hall joining us now and it's really affecting visibility, kari. >> it will make the drive a lot harder this morning. i was just driving and almost getting lost on the normal route i take every day. now the visibility in napa and oakland is down to a quarter of a mile. very low visibility there. also in san carlos is down to about three quarters of a mile in san jose about a mile. all clears out this afternoon and warm temperatures reaching the mid to upper 70s today. much warmer than yesterday.

and we will be up to 74 degrees today in oakland. i'll talk more about this and our next chance of rain coming up. how is it looking else where, mike? >> kari, we talked about the stopping distance and the visibility is okay at stopping distance and there's the north bay. i do want to take you out to the roadway and show you what cameras are live in south san jose and bob drove through the area. you can see enough for the stopping distance but you can't see the signs all the time and that will be disorienting. we will end with a shot of oakland. look towards the oakland camera and right underneath the building here. you can't see up as far as high street but, again, just driving on the deck, slow it down a bit. back to you guys. >> very limited visibility. coming up next, we investigate. >> i had this gun so i was given 25 to life. the time is way more than you would even get for the crime itself. >> 'cause the punishment fit the crime? we go inside of san quentin and

off as they continue their search for that suspect. we're going to keep you updated on all the information we get in as this multi-jurisdictional search continues this morning. now to an investigative unit exclusive. you probably heard of california's three strikes law carrying a mandatory 25 years to life in prison sentence for many offenders who get a third felony conviction. >> just one of the enhancements in the criminal code. but a senior investigative reporter stephen stock shows us the reality is not that simple. stephen? >> good morning, guys. we analyzed years worth of data and we also talk to experts on both sides of this issue and we talk to many who say that sentence enhancements in california just don't work to reduce violent crime. some say enhancements work actually in the reverse serving as an injustice. while specific data is hard to come by, our investigative unit did find numbers that are available from california's

as you're headed out the door this morning, there is widespread fog throughout the bay area and certainly slow down the commute. >> you should slow down. >> i looked out the window and i saw the fog this morning and i thought, i better go ahead and get moving and get out the door early. you should do the same. allow extra time to get to where you're going and as we start out this morning, here's a live look

at san jose and you can barely see anything. some of the streets are even worse. just keep that in mind as you get ready this morning. just move it along a little bit faster. the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, we will have several chances of rain this week, looking good, too. we'll talk about that in a second. as you head out now, temperatures are in the low to mid-50s and we do have some 40s in livermore, as well as parts of the north bay. in san jose, we start out this morning at 52 degrees at 7:00. still some clouds and i don't think the fog will lift until about 9:00, maybe 10:00 in some spots. we will have bright sunshine, once it clears. and temperatures warming up into the mid-70s today. looking at the futurecast. there will be some rain nearby, but it won't start to move into the north bay until late tomorrow evening and that round kind of fizzles out while spreading some clouds farther to the south. there will be another system moving in right behind that that will bring in some rain late wednesday night into early thursday morning. and we may have some more heading into the weekend.

so, temperatures over the next few days will still be very warm. into the low to mid-70s and it will feel like spring time. in san francisco up to 71 degrees and 70 on wednesday and we keep those temperatures for most of the bay area for the next few days. into the rest of the week, this is what our rain potential looks like. once again, as we go into wednesday night and thursday, there will be some rain moving in. this one not looking all that impressive, but we'll keep an eye on it. heading into the weekend, if you're starting to make plans, it looks like a soggy one. it starts out saturday morning with some rain and it rains pretty much throughout the day on sunday. so, i know it's only monday, but we're all looking ahead to the weekend. let's see how the fog may impact your commute this morning with mike. >> kari, we are getting that break in the tri-valley as you had mentioned before. one of our clearer areas and sometimes our only foggy area. look how nice this view is and

the dow is tracking for its first positive month in the past three. look for data today on manufacturing and pending home sales. on friday the dow fell 57 points to 16640. the nasdaq edged up eight. meanwhile, disney is watching seasonal prices and people will now pay more on peak days between 119, $124 and disney has grappled with how to manage crowds but stop selling tickets because too many people were in the parks. mark your calendar, apple is expected to unveil a new smaller iphone on march 21st. the device reportedly has a four inch screen and a faster chip. apple is also expected to show off a new ipad pro, bands for the apple watch and new support for apple pay. sam and laura, back over to you. >> more modeled after the 5. >> good things come in little

we were talking about the fact, i don't want to say complaining, talking about the fact that the weather is very nice, but very similar every day. >> you wake up to a lot of fog this morning. how long will it stick around? >> stick around for the next several hours. as you drive through from san jose to palo alto it's all clear and then run right back into it, again. we're also not seeing much fog around the tri-valley where you see the dark shades of gray and that's where visibility is the lowest. it starts to roll back as we head towards the 9:00 and 10:00 hour and all clear as we go into this afternoon looking at san francisco. clouds throughout the morning and then sunshine later on today with quickly warming temperatures and hitting the low 70s this afternoon. i'll show you the rest of the week and what to expect. that's coming up. let's see how it looks this morning as you head out now palo alto. >> looking towards palo alto. disorienting. the fog is not enough to cause an issue. you can still see for half a

mile on most of your drives and that's a good stopping distance and makes the signs tough to see and tougher to figure out where you are. this is right by where you can see that sign over there. let's look at your map and the orange highlighting all around the map, that's where you'll have the densest fog around the area and as we go around the water, you see right along the water's edge. 101 and 880 and your bridges will be a factor this morning. the richmond san rafael getting a pock et of fog and report of major front end damage to a car and we don't know if fog will be a factor there. if you're traveling over to or from i-80. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. the man accused of shooting a police officer on the first day of the job she died saturday night when she and other officers responded to a coomestic disturbance call. two other officers were critically hurt. the suspect, army staff sergeant robby hamilton is accused of

shooting and killing his wife shortly before officers arrived at the home. >> we have three confirmed hits. >> have just want to be clear, do we have officers involved in a shooting? >> we have three officers that have been shot. >> she was sworn in last friday. she was just 28 years old. 4:56 right now. and follow oup thup this mornin. cleared u.s. citizenship of any errors or oversights when tsarnaev was given citizenship back in 2013. tsarnaev who denied any link to terrorism passed a citizenship test just three months before the attack. dzhokhar was sentenced to death last may for his role in the
