you see the fog in the north bay in san francisco and mostly clear sky is in the upper 50s and high of 73 degrees in san francisco, 67 degrees. the rain moves in late this evening for parts of the bay area. i'll detail that in a few minutes. let's get an update on the morning commute and major problem for the south bay. >> that's right. major problem in the south bay. all lanes currently closed jammed up from wolf road and use stevens creek to jump back on. it's a counter-commute. they're trying to get safely signaturesed there and the rest of your south bay technicypical pattern to the nimitz and we'll talk about the fog. back to you. >> thank you. in the meantime, we're getting

back to breaking news following a tsunami warning now in effect for christmas island after a powerful quake off the coast of indonesia, the 7.8 magnitude quake hit more than an hour ago, initially a .2, then 7.9 and now 7.8. more than 400 miles off the coast of indonesia. no damage reported yet but there is a history in that part of the world. a tsunami of great severity back in 2004 that claimed the lives of 230,000 people in more than a dozen countries. what a super tuesday! >> i am a unifier. once we get all of this finished, i will go after one person. that's hillary clinton. >> from super tuesday to results wednesday, both hillary clinton

welcome back. we are looking at a live scene. in the last minute, we got word of two lanes of southbound at 280 after a crash here. you see the debris they have to clean up, working very quickly at lawrence expressway and san jose. half your freeway is currently blocked. we'll give you the update. i'm tracking. a search for wreckage of malaysia airlines flight mh370. an object that could be from it has been found off africa and suggesting it could have come from the doomed jet which van h vanished almost exactly two years ago. the debris was found in the same corner of the indian ocean where the only confirmed debris was found last july. a developing story, a train

carrying hazardous materials derailed near ripley, north carolina. more than a dozen car des railed and one of the cars is still leaking ethanol. hazmat its is on the scene and homeowners within 1,000 feet received vehiclevacuation order. others are told to shelter in place. so far, three cases are confirmed? >> reporter: correct. they have confirmed three people carrying and became sick with the norovirus and 29 more on campus exhibiting noro-like symptoms. yesterday, the campus released this flyer to students and staff about what is going on. so far, they have found no link between all those cases in terms

of it's not like they all lived in the same dorm or ate at the same cafeteria or ate at the same event. campus is asking if you are sick, stay home and don't want you to be preparing any food, asking regardless whether you have symptoms, wash your hands before you eat. if you're not familiar with the symptoms of norovirus, you can become sick, vomiting an diarrhea in a few days and only takes a few droplets to become sick. >> not just on cruise ships anymore. saying it was at fault between the collision of a car and bus. >> following up on the topic, you are a little upset here. >> i am upset. i don't get to carry car crashes on my beat or never. there had been a collision between a google robot car and

testified before congress explaining both sides of the story to open an iphone used in the san bernardino shooting by a terrorist. two bits of information came out during the fbi director's testimony. he say there's other phones they want to open if apple makes a tool they want to make. it's entirely counter to what was said in the past, that they just wanted to open one iphone. >> they made one mistake when they reset his i cloud shortly after the shooting. if they had not they may have been able to use the automatic back feature to see what's inside. this is going all the way to the supreme court if congress doesn't take it up fast.

team. >> a superior forecast from kari. we're waiting for rain and snow. >> we are. a gorgeous sunrise in san jose. take look at that. just beautiful. a great way to look at the work week. tracking the rain, it's been a while since we had a good so soaker, to the west of us and will take a while to work its way to the bay area, with sho r showers approaching shortly before midnight. in san francisco, we will have rain moving in around 12:00, one 1:00 in the morning it pounds on the roof and moves into the rest of the bay area. and by this time tomorrow morning we will have wet weather coming down. after today, there is nothing but rain in the forecast the

next several days and highs lower 60s and 70s and especially near the coast of santa rosa of 66 degrees. after today, we will see that system moving in and several more behind that. with this one, doesn't bring much rain but scattered showers late thursday and friday and saturday could be heavy downp r downpours along with wind gusts. now, looks like they could be 30-40, 50 miles an hour and could cause damage with heavy rain moving over to heavy snow by the end of the weekend. by looking at that now with rainfall totals possible within the next several days, we could have anywhere from 2 to 3 1/2 inches of rain and the sierra will begin friday.

thursday some rain and friday, it switches over to snow. we still have a pretty good amount of snowfall, especially at the summit. we do still need some work here. the statewide average, based on yesterday's surveys, are at 83%. last year at this time, just 17%. heading into the next several days, we have potential of at least a couple of feet of snow, maybe even more, as we see this active weather pattern contin continuing into march. we'll keep tabs on that and mike is keeping an eye on the south bay. what's happening now? >> we have all lanes currently closed as they prepare to do the sweeper through the area to get 100 feet of debris reported. see this ambulance leaving with the tow truck there? this crash sounded dramatic. for 100 feet along the roadway. we hear minor injuries and this has a major impact. i will get there in to look like i'm helping.

they will clear this hopefully during this traffic break as well. south bay 280 approaching lawrence expressway. full closure just temporarily. if you're able to get south of saratoga, you're fine southbound and there is a spectator issue. keep that in mind. no big surprises for 680 or 880 southbound in fremont. fog registers for the north bay. tough to see with our cameras. the toll plaza gives you a look as they start to show slowing. we'll get back with more news right after this quick break. ==laura/cu==

the u supre court hrs arguments .. in what many are at 6:26 today, the supreme court is hearing arguments on one of the most significant cases in years that has groups gathered in washington. and a texas law restricts abortion in the name of healthcare and might cause clinics to shut down. similar states have laws in the books. it is an eight judge supreme court with the death of judge antonin scalia. the cruise ship arrived a couple hours ago in new jersey. it was just a couple months ago the voyage was cut short with the outbreak of norovirus and possibility of severe weather
