i'm bob redell and take you live to the scene of a shooting in livermore where we believe one person was shot and killed. that story coming up. a disturbing case out of the tri-valley a babysitter accused of abusing a 13-month-old boy. the popular site she advertised her services on. "today in the bay" starts right now. it is thursday morning, we're happy you're here with us. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. you are wondering to put on this morning looking live at the bay bridge looking calm right now. but the calm before the storm. four separate systems will move through the bay area starting today. >> meteorologist kari hall tracking the radar for us. give us a timeline of when we can expect most of that rain. >> most of the rain won't come until this weekend and we're starting out with spotty, light showers you're seeing this morning. very hit and miss and just enough to make the roads wet

before you head out this morning. grab the umbrella, we will see that as we go through the next ser several hours. hit or miss rain and in the north bay now, 55 degrees with light showers. temperatures very mild and we'll only reach into the mid-60s this afternoon with some spotty rain and some cloudy skies through the evening. i'll detail what to expect this weekend as the weather system really ramps up. that is coming up in a few minutes. let's get a look at some of the shaky cameras over the bridge with mike. >> looking from emoryville and better news as far as the view goes. shaking a bit, just starting to move as the wind getting a little more active and the wind is getting more active through the area. a smooth drive over from the toll plaza and look over a little bit south the san mateo bridge where the rain did travel through and we saw actual rain on the camera as we were watching and damp roadways where it's green. anywhere from the san mateo bridge and the peninsula. just a note. back over to you. >> you can track the rain 24/7

because we know you have to leave the house at some point. check out the interactive radaron our nbc bay area app and download it now before the real storms start rolling in. now to breaking news in livermore where gunfire broke out overnight right near the police station. >> bob redell live at the scene and, bob, we know there was a shooting and we know someone is dead, but what else? >> well, good morning to you, kris and sam. liv livermore police are not telling us but that all of their officer os are okay. we are waiting for a coroner to arrive here. we're looking down at pacific avenue. if you're not familiar with this part of livermore those are apartments and on the right side the back side of the civic center and incidentally the police department itself. the shooting happened around 3:00 this morning at the end of that street in the middle of the street where you saw the squad cars. this did initially come down as

an officer-involved shooting. we do believe one person was shot and killed. as i mentioned that the coroner is on the way. what is not clear whether the police shot this person or if this person shot himself. we do expect a sergeant or lieutenant to update us soon on the circumstances surrounding this shooting. again, a lot of police activity. one officer telling us this morning that they are expecting a lot of the police department to be showing up here more officers will be showing up here soon as the shift changes. again, i just bring that up to give you a sense of how serious the livermore police department is taking this shooting and the magnitude of what happened here. bob redelll "today in the bay." now to more breaking news and a building destroyed and two people sent to the hospital all of it after a driver was speeding off the roadway, flew off the interstate and slammed into a building. >> he was flying on 680 at first. it all happened off of boulevard circle in walnut creek.

crews are still pulling, well, they did, successfully pull the car out earlier this morning at 4:25. stephanie chuang joining us live at the scene with what we know thus far. good morning, steph. >> good morning, sam and kris. took three trucks to get the car out of the building after it flew off othe interchange through some bushes and trees and parking lot and wedging itself upside down where crews are working. down there actually the bottom floor of this office building. it is usually a yoga studio. the bmw was going more than 100 miles per hour and the door still lodged inside there. firefighters and first responders rushed to get one of the people out. one of the people loaded on to a stretcher into an ambulance. the driver male and the passenger female. also a concern of structural

integrity. for first responders to go in they cut off the doors and got those two people out who suffered major injuries. this morning we spoke with the owner of the building who was woken up by that call in the middle of the night and said it was lucky this did not happen hours later. >> during the daytime there would have been cared parked in this area and people in the building, fortunately, none of that was occurring. >> here's the video of the bmw on the tow truck completely smashed. you can't even tell what is the front or the back until you study it. no pursuit of the bmw on the highway on the crash so it is unclear what led up to this. police got the call around 11:50 last night. crews will shore up the building and put in temporary beams. three units have been red tagged. no power, no gas. this is an office building to architects, hair dressers, of course that yoga studio. no one will be coming here

today. live here in walnut creek, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." >> stay up to date on both of those breaking news stories on air and online, you can download our free nbc bay area, app or head to our website for the latest information. under arrest for alleged child abuse. police say a babysitter was arrested for allegedly abusing a 13-month-old livermore boy she was caring for. >> this is moriah gonzales who was on care.com. their investigation began back in february. further details are not being released but police say the case is sensitive in nature and they are looking to see if there are more victims. that investigation is still ongoing this morning. at 5:06. an alleged hate crime has an entire east bay community on edge right now. this happened in el cerito. last tuesday night a couple woke to find flames underneath their car. a message with a racist slur was also found on the front lawn of

their house. police are now asking any neighbors with surveillance cameras to come forward. >> the things that we're looking for is to see if we can track how the suspect got to the scene of the crime. the more people that have footage, even if their footage doesn't show anything, it's still good for us to know that maybe a vehicle or veteran didn't pass by their house. >> police made a special appearance at a city meeting last night to update the community on their investigation. so far, though, no arrests have been made. back to your microclimate forecast. as we look live at san jose a little dry for now. but wet weather is moving in. >> let's go to meteorologist kari hall for a look at the radar. kari, how much rain are we expecting to get as you calculate those totals? >> today it won't be much. we're going to see spotty, light rain pretty much off and on throughout the morning and a batch of rain that moved through fremont and hayward and now we're tracking some rain moving through san francisco and also south city. so, as we go into the next few minutes, we'll see this rain

dropping some sprinkles, but not a heavy downpour by any stretch of the imagination. we'll see this all throughout the morning, once again, with breezy winds. tomorrow we'll also have some times of showers and mainly right rain, once again. but a stronger storm system will arrive on saturday and especially during the evening that could bring in some heavy rain and some strong winds. i'll talk more about this and what to expect over the next several days with more weather systems moving in. that's coming up in a few minutes but let's head to the tri-valley now with mike. >> kari, we saw the rain travel through this camera shot for a few seconds. really just about 30 seconds of any activity and then damp roadways right now. we'll see that build as we look at your map and you saw the live camera. no slowing at the dublin interchange and out of the altamont over towards greenville. green highlighted here on the hayward area and over on the peninsula down over towards the south bay where that rain has traveled over, again. light rain now moving into the san francisco area. wet roads coming off of that bay

reaction. he has been tweeting about this all night calling it a desperate move by a failed candidate who called for endorsement four years ago. in advance of tonight's debate with trump, cruz, rubio and kasich. dr. ben carson announced he will not be at the debate tonight. people are wondering if that is the beginning of the end of his campaign and a big conservative speech coming up tonight here in washington where he may be making an announcement. nothing official yet. but his campaign manager has said that after that speech he doesn't have any public events planned. so, as cruz and rubio try to overtake trump as mitt romney gives him harsh criticism of trump and trump is giving it right back this morning and we're also watching dr. carson to see where his campaign might be going from here. >> i'm not sure that they know at this point because, you know, that message that they sent out yesterday was no way forward but we'll stick around. very odd wording there.

and the rain is very hit and miss and light. we'll see that throughout the morning. as you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, the chance of rain pretty much every day for the next several days and it will be not a total washout but we will have kinds of rains like this where we see the showers and not everyone is seeing it but we will still have spotty rain coming down and the need to have umbrellas close by. tracking some of the rain as it continues to move to san francisco and the peninsula and across the bay over towards oak lpd and that is what we will see throughout the morning. here's the 9:00 hour and that rain starts to work into am peninsula and east bay and approaching the south bay. by 11:00, we have coverage of light rain. into this evening we see it tapering off before the next round moves off and and temperatures reaching the mid up toer 60s all across the board and not a wide range in these

temperatures here today and it will be getting cooler over the next few days as we get cold air dropping in from the north. looking at tomorrow. here we are. 3:00 in the afternoon and it will be scattered showers moving into the north bay. it gets heavier as we get into the evening and this may affect your friday night plans. into saturday, we'll still have some spotty rain. here's the morning hours and then it gets heavier as we go through the day. the strongest of the series of storm systems will be on saturday evening into early sunday where we may have the potential of some gusty winds and, also, some flooding. there may be some street flooding and also debris and mudslide, especially if you have those drains blocked. you want to go ahead and clear those because we will not only have that heavy rain saturday, but, once again, for the next several days and temperatures will be coming down and be in the mid-60s for tomorrow and saturday. only in the 50s for many spots on sunday. let's head to the east bay now with mike. >> kari, look over towards our oakland camera and kind of

at this point, there's no evide9 =convo= the zika virus has hit home. >> at this point there is no local transmission of zika virus in california or the bay area. >> now, napa county has confirmed infirst case, which is a pregnant woman who recently returned from central america. that is where she is believed to have contracted zika. he is no longer exhibiting any symptoms and they don't think the virus is spreading. most commonly transmitted through mosquitos and in central and south america. the health scare now in the south bay. an archbishop wres ler diagnosed as herpes. >> he believed he contacted the virus during a wrestling match and now trying to get the state championships postponed. they are hoping south bay schools will establish better protocols to stop the spread of infectious diseases.

sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. feeling the first signs of rain. straight to your microclimate forecast. live look out of san francisco as the first of four storms making its way into the bay area. >> meteorologist kari hall is watching that radar and quite a show this morning, kari. >> light sprinkles moving through the bay area as you look at that radar and seeing from half moon bay and stretching over towards the east bay. it's not everywhere in the bay area as you head out this morning. just grab the umbrella. signs of light rain throughout the morning and early afternoon and highs today only reaching the low to mid-60s with a lot of clouds as we go into this evening. of course, this is the first of many we have been talking about. the wet weather moving in for the weekend. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll show you the curves and it's just starting to build, in fact. no problems for the north bay. we'll move down towards the bay bridge where there are no problems and a lot more cars.

is the latest? >> well, good morning to you, sam and kris. i just spoke with the livermore fire department who tells us that put them on standby for was described as an active shooter situation down there at the end of pacific avenue and this was around 3:00 this morning. if you're not familiar with this area on your left side. you have apartments and on the right side the back entrance of liverpolice department and civic center and ten minutes later and ten minutes into this police told to stand down that they were not needed any more. the understanding being that the subject was dead. livermore police won't tell us much right now except to tell us that no officers were hurt. that there was a shooting and that a coroner is on the way. what's not clear is whether police shot this person or if this person shot himself. reporting live here in livermore, bob redelll "today in the bay." another breaking story we have been following since 4:30 this morning. it does not look like something

you believe unless you see it. chaotic scene in walnut creek where a car going 140 miles per hour down a roadway slams into a building. >> all happened off boulevard circle in walnut creek and crews trying to shore up the building right now because it is structural unsafe because of that impact. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live at the scene with what we know so far. even with that car gone, it's shocking that that building has not tipped over. >> i understand that there is a metal beam that is still there. but that is what crews are working on right now to put more metal beams in. the car flew 400, 500 feet off the highway just before midnight. over bushes and a fence and lodged upside down in this office building. the bottom floor there. the bmw going more than 100 miles per hour through this wall landing 50 feet inside. firefighters and first responders rushed to get the people out of that bmw and at least one person we saw involved

in the crash getting loaded on to a stretcher into an ambulance. the sheriff office is investigating what happened here and the chp says it was not involved with any sort of chase of the bw when it got reports of the crash before hid night. the damage was so bad, it delayed the ability to rescue the two people trapped inside. >> we had to secure the building to make the building safe and cut both doors off while the vehicle was upside down and deal with twos that had major injuries. >> now, here's the video of the bmw on the tow truck. you can see a better, clear view of completely smashed it is. it is unclear what led up to this. we do know the two people involved the male driver and female passenger suffered major injuries with one reportedly suffering a broken neck. that building usually holds yogas and it usually starts at 10:00 in the morning. as for now, crews are working on this building and the structural

>> the main objective here is to develop a timeline of events leading up to, you know, leading up to the incident. >> police are now tracking the couple's final moments before shellie's death. they are checking the couple's computer, phones and credit card statement. 5:36. the man accused of killing his girlfriend on valentine's day expected to enter a plea later this morning. police arrested esmid pedraza after they found the body of stacey aguilar and she disappeared arattending a house party in hayward. his accomplice perez is also going to be in court. a warning now for ford truck owners. we know there are a lot of you. are seeing an increase in thefts in martinez and concord and in pleasant hill. they say the main models being

targeted are the work trucks. the f-250 and the f-350 and officers say thieves are breaking the ignition lock to start the vehicle. police are now say figure you have one of these trucks or one of those vans, use an anti-theft device. if you see anything suspicious, even if you don't own one of those vehicles, call 911. >> heavy duty security. at 5:37 right now. lighting things up in the name of diversity and tolerance. it's not exactly abbey road but it is a special crossing in san jose. in front of the community center. administrators asked the city for a rainbow sidewalk and say they are thrill would the result. the mayor led that procession to put in the rainbow stripe crosswalk. four words that the bay area hasn't heard much this winter, spare the air alert. now the bay area news group says we can thank el nino for that. regional air district leaders

and they say air turbulence, and stronger winds hoping to disperse most of the smoke that would typically settle in the atmosphere. higher rainfall totals also helped. the bay area called one winter spare the air alert that ended on monday. during the last period last year you might remember there was 23 alerts, 23 times you could not light the fire. happening today students at one school will get life lesson os from someone who almost died in a beating. >> brian stow who survived being beat nn to a coma. it left stow with permanent injuries but battled back in his long recovery and today he's scheduled to speak to ninth and tenth graders in san mateo. talking about the potential life-long impact from bullies and bullying. back now to your microclimate forecast and the wet start so far. a sprinkled, scattered wet start here on this thursday. a live look from san jose.

a little dry in the area of san jose right now, but wet weather is moving in else where. >> let's go to meteorologist kari hall and the radar looks really impressive, kari. but this is nothing compared to what we're going to get. >> just a precursor for several storms moving into the weekend and the rain is showing some light, spotty sprinkles as of now. a look at the camera over the golden gate bridge and so far we haven't seen any rain here and that is the case for much of the bay area. very hit or miss. as we go through the day, breezy winds. into the day tomorrow, times of some showers and mainly light and starts out during the morning and tapers off during the evening and then we'll have another storm system moving in on saturday. this will be the one to be watched because it could bring in some very heavy rain along with some strong winds and a policy for a few thunderstorms, as well. we'll be keeping an eye on that but we've also had a little bit of rain over the san mateo bridge. how is the traffic looking, mike? >> traffic flows very well. look over towards the hayward side camera. the damp roadways and from time

t next replican predential debate is tonig decision 2016. what exactly is going on here? the next republican debate, presidential debate is tonight in michigan. one candidate is he in the race or out of the race? we know that. >> dr. ben carson is the first post super tuesday casualty. he says he's not ready to quit because there's no sign forward. but the signs are there that he's going to withdraw at some point. the campaign confirms that he will not be on stage tonight in detroit, though it's his home town. the other contenders, though, are hoping to gain carson supporters and put the brakes on donald trump. >> everyone get together so we can keep this frontrunner from winning and winning. >> next primaries in louisiana and kansas and nebraska. a new round of hostility

from north korea. hours after new sanctions from the united nations. the communist country fired several short range projectiles off the eastern coast today. several hours earlier, the u.n. slap new sanctions on north korea for its recent nuclear tests andt launches. south korea says it has not determined exactly what type of projectiles north korea had fired. a developing story now that seems to shed new light on the world's biggest airplane mystery, the disappearance of flight 370 two years ago. family members of the victims are now calling for a full search of an east african coast. australian officials now say that debris washed ashore mozambique and turned up in an area matching investigators' theories about where the plane may have ended up. boaters over the weekend found the tail section of the boeing

and the only such plane unaccounted for. it had 239 souls onboard. >> still such a mystery. we talked a lot about the tension between silicon vally and washington. >> what? >> how about this. the pentagon is expected to announce the partnership with silicon valley. >> scott mcgrew, the pentagon has offices here in sunnyvale, right? >> it made a lot of connections inship with some of the surrounding tech companies, most notably, google. ash carter announced eric schmidt there on the left asked to lead a new pentagon innovative. so, that announcement about schmidt and the board was made at the rsa security conference in san francisco. schmidt will then pick further members from silicon valley for the pentagon board. google does some defense work. its robots designed to help soldiers carry heavy loads into battle. we sometimes show you these

videos for fun but these are robots doing serious work. it is a bit peculiar for goog tool be so close with the pentagon. we're quite certain the founders never expected the company to be a defensor or for its chairman to be a top name at the pentagon. but companies evolve or devolve. sports authority has filed for bankruptcy and says it will close 140 stores. it likely will sell the remaining stores to an outside buyer. about a dozen sport authority stores in the bay area for now. we don't know if they're on the chopping block just yet. wall street looking forward to tomorrow. the latest jobs numbers from the labor department. 5:30 our time. the news has been very good lately. that's an important point. some politicians claim the economy is not doing well and they're generally wrong. that said wages continue to be a struggle. a new report says there's big growth in low-wage jobs in the

facebook quizzes. cybersecurity experts are calling them click based. in some case hackers might be using them to get your personal information. they'll use quizzes to disguise malicious links. they can even trick you into downloading malware. >> the more they know about you, the more ways they can trick you into doing something like clicking on a link, if you should not get one. >> i probably shouldn't take the quizzes any more. i mean, my computer phone might already be in damage of that. >> experts say that many hackers are looking for ways just to get into your bank account. they suggest staying away from quizzes and polls that ask to sign in or give your e-mail address. so, that, of course, is the big warning there. you don't need to answer any quizes to figure out what the weather forecast is going to be. >> but, we'll get to that in one second. >> we talk about things, we talked about sports authority

closing and baseball cards. they could be worth something. this next story can only be call grand slam. >> apparently it almost didn't happen. take a look at what we're talking about. seven identical baseball cards, part of what many consider to be the most rare series of cards ever printed. >> only 15 cards were known and in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and the anonymous family that discovered those cards. found them in a beat up paper bag inside the run down home of a deceased relative. lord knows how long they've been there for. experts authenticated the find yesterday. those cards in total to be worth more than $1 million. >> yeah. this is the smoking gun. imagine any of our players. >> the one player said, i don't like my cards being associated with tobacco because kids are going to collect these.

rain timeline and we will start to see that moving in a little bit more. rain streaming in from west to east and then as we go into this afternoon, it breaks up and becomes a lot more spotty and mostly cloudy skies into this evening. temperatures will top out in the low to mid-60s today. we're bringing it down now that we do have a lot more cloud cover in the forecast and we will also have these cool temperatures continuing into the weekend. for tomorrow, we'll still have some spotty rain off and on and then it gets heavier as we go into friday night. so, that may affect your friday night plans. pretty much rain off and on with the heaviest of the rain moving in late saturday night and possibly some damaging winds and storms as we head into saturday night and early sunday. we'll be talking more about that, but let's get an update on the morning commute now from mike. >> kari, i get frustrated. we worry about visibility issues and not a problem right now. i just saw someone backing up right here at the hov lane at the toll plaza. if you get in the wrong lane

edge. this happened in el cerito. police say last tuesday night a couple awoke to find flames coming under their car. a message with racist slurs also found on the front lawn. police are now asking any of the neighbors who might have surveillance cameras to come forward. >> one of the things we're looking for is to see if we can track how the suspect gut the scene of the crime. so, the more people that have footage, even if their footage doesn't show anything, it's still good for us to know that maybe a vehicle didn't pass by their house. >> police made a special appearance at the el cerito meeting to update the community on their investigation. so far no one is under arrest. and, now, to an investigative unit exclusive. the b.a.r.t. extension to san jose looks smooth but now we're learning about an underground mistake. >> this has to do with piping. vicky nguyen joining us with what she has uncovered.

>> reviewed construction plans with two engineering experts. we took what we uncovered to the vta. the project manager admitted crews installed the wrong pipes. it happened in san jose, one of six stations along the 16-mile project to connect b.a.r.t. from the east bay to the south bay. the original plans called for b pvc piping. inspectors had about two weeks to catch the mistake, but they didn't. now, 1,400 feet is buried under ground and the mistake led to a 70-day work stoppage. during time they found the cast iron pipes will perform as well and last as long as pvc but experts we spoke with aren't so sure. they say it's superior during earthquakes and doesn't corrode when exposed to certain types of and electricity. some worry it will be costly to
